They look awesome
Hopefully more integration between Sony devices comes with it as well. Pairing a DS3 with this would be sweet considering it's supposed to be "PlayStation Certified".
the foldable one looks awesome. The demo of playing games on it looked really smooth too.
Way too much bezel for my liking..
Cool, another way for sony to give up our personal information.... Hurray.....

Recently I've been addicted to rainbow 6 multiplayer on my xperia play. I've noticed that I have a much easier time aiming and headshots then other players... Chances are they are gaming on a regular touchsphone, scrambling to aim at me but die before they can shoot.
At a record of 1887 to 817 deaths, it's safe to say because of the keypad advantage, I am better then other players. How are you guys coping with fps??? I was never good at fps but I get records like 100-26 with 42 kills being headshots

I would also like to add that I am extremely happy with this phone, for the simple fact that it's for gamers.. Casual or not the gamepad really enriches the experience... It's sad that sony releases this when they are struggling and don't promote or back it properly... If it was samsung that released it, I'm sure it will dominate the entire cellphone gaming market

Ya they definitely released it at the wrong time, or atleast should of worked more on the release games...but i think its a fantastic phone, the gamepad is beautiful, playing first person shooters against any touch screen players does put you a step ahead, i personal like nova 2 never really enjoyed the modern combat, felt really awkward to play. Probably the best part of the phone is being able to play ANY emulator on your phone at perfect speed with a proper gamepad, doesnt get much better than that! Personally loving the playstation emulator and snes! - Kes

Im very disapointed in the way gameloft have applied the right touch pad, all they have done is use it to emulate screen swipes, i dont understand why they cannot use it to emulate an analogue stick like they do with the left one! Like on battle bears

Faster? I don't find that. If the guy is behind you then you have to swipe a lot of times. By then you are as good as dead.

Swipe look is rubbish. It's the one and only thing that ruins fps's enjoyability on the Xperia Play for me at the moment.
Unfortunately Gameloft is only FPS option at the moment. Just like the Ipad 2. They make all these grand promises of great games like Infinity blade yet there hasn’t been any games like it since.
Edit: Has anyone tried Modern Warfare 2?
You guys are screwed the new PSP is on its way and it stole all marketing from the play. Actually the play had a great buzz as far as the web goes but that's as far as it went.

You are right but I did buy the phone for more. I was hoping for PSP games like God Of War. If it doesn't get any more support I may switch back to my 3GS and give this one to my daughter to play games on.
Finally got around to playing Rainbow 6 (great that it was free!).
Seems like top fun online.
Went in blind, straight into multiplayer not know controls etc and managed 11 kills and 12 deaths on the Play. That might not seem good, but it's good for me in an FPS.
Also turned the horrid music off, made it feel a bit like Counterstrike...how good would that be on Android btw?
Can see myself playing Rainbow 6 a lot now.

The PSVita and the XPlay are two entirely different devices. The Xplay replaces your phone, ergo you have it on you at all time. It's not a gaming beast like the PSVita, but the battery lasts all day, you can do all your phone stuff on it, and when you are in the mood for games there are a myriad of choices and they all play awesome because you have physical buttons rather than just a touch screen.
The PSVita is great for places where you actually plan to bring it. Like flights, ferry rides, etc

I only bought the phone for emulators originally. I didnt even care about the playstation store. All i wanted to do was play some snes/megadrive/mame games on my telephone. You can not play these games on touchscreen only. Totally uncontrollable.
Didnt even know gameloft were porting to the xperia play. Got alot more than i bargained for. Some (Most?) Gameloft games are very awesome.
Being able to play mobile phone games and even browse the internet with the control pad is way better and more fun than any touch screen only on the market atm.

You Serious? My 3GS with it's tiny screen is gathering dust.
The Play has had much better support than I thought it would, just GameLoft games have been keeping me busy. Its only been out two months give it time.
Was looking for something that went underneath the Sofa and couldn't be asked to find a torch so used the Rear 'LED' Flash light, much to the amazement of others as they thought it was incredibly brighter compared to their iCraps.

AW: What Do Other People Think Of Your Play?

Well a lot of people like the gamepad. When you mention games like GTA, some peoples interest increases. Through all the tweaks and various great work of the developers on here, my phone runs quite smooth and handles well meaning it isn't really trashed for being old and outdated. It does lag or slow down sometimes but i guess that's to be expected. Some just call it a "PSP phone"

One time someone was even thinking that it can run every game from PSP, not tech guy tho
Some people are whining about outdated hardware, but when I ask them what can their phone do which mine can't they can't really say and they always play games which don't even need sd data
Other people say that not many games are optimised for it, I ask for example and then after they hear that almost every example is optimised they shut up
Other people agree with me that it's the best phone for gaming.
My Best Friends are bit jealous of 4 different roms of any choice (gb, ics, jb) but they don't play as hard as I do on phone even though they agree that it is a good phone.
Overall opinion is poor but after I slide the game pad people realise what it is and mostly they change their opinion to good/very good.
Sent from my R800i using xda premium
Everyone that asks me what phone do I have, after I open the slider, they realize that no matter what phone they have, just looks like a toy (with expensive/unnecessary gadgets to accomplish what the integrated gamepad of the XPlay does) in front of my Xperia Play.
In my country/area there are a generalized gaming culture, so that's the cause of this reaction.
Yeah, never missing that person that thinks it can run PSP games (although thanks to PPSSPP maybe in the future, at least struggling), the form factor deceives anyone

- Oh, an arc or something?

My sis thinks its cool and she almost bought one for herself but went with Neo instead (because she didnt want to have the same phone as I did)
Yeah, surprisingly many people get excited when they see GTA 3 on it, few people wanted to go even more indepth than games and appearance (like specs)
Also before I had bought my XPlay, some cellphone store worker was interested about XPlay when we asked did they have any (they only had Arc), he said its a shame they are not selling it because he would have loved to try it out or even buy it. This was way after XPlay's retail release, like 6 months afterwards so he was genuinely interested about it.

Unless you really need the money, I would keep the phone. It's really a one of a kind.
I remember the first time I took my PLAY out of the box.. it was so beautiful, I simply couldn't put it down. Whenever I pick this phone up again and just look at it, I still get that feeling of how special it is. I own quite a few 'nice' phones, but none of them give me that sensation of awesomeness that the Xperia Play does. That's why I will never part with it.

Really? Because all the recent notable Play Store releases from Modern Combat 4, Aralon, Scaresoul, ME: Infiltrator, Dark Knight Rises, NOVA 3, Dead Trigger, Repulze all the way up to Bladeslinger runs like a dream on Xperia Play, and there's been topics dedicated to Xperia Play running current-gen games with extraordinary performance.
What'd YOU do to your Xperia Play to get current games running at 10FPS?
I got a stock ROM without as much as Chainfire, and Xperia Play handles 'em like they were made for it.
Hello everyone,
I came here to ask people some advices...
I want to change my Samsung Galaxy S III for an Xperia Play as the only games i play are basically PS1 and GBA games.
I got some questions about it.
Is the Xperia Play laggy on FPSe or ePSXe ?
How is the feel of the physical gamepad, and what about the joysticks ?
Are there some batteries fitting the Xperia Play having more charge power (mAh) than the original ?
Is it easy to root and install a custom rom on it ?
Thanks in advance for the advices.
Fpse is running at full speed at 95% games ( that i play), ff7-ff9, tomb raidet,spyro... Only game that is slower is CollinMcrea rally 2
Flashing and rooting is easy with flashtool, just remember that kernel and recovery are on same partition and they are always flashed together ( as 1 file).
And important: you can't flash custom kernel if your bootloader is locked. It can be unlock, easy way on SE site, but not on all models. If you can choose, look for R800i model.
As for gamepad/touchpad, it is little smaller than psx controller, and if you don't have big ( or long) fingers, you'll be fine

1) I've always thought Xperia Play had WAY too many of it's own great titles to mess around with antiquated things from the past, but it seems to do better with PSXperia than any offbrand emulators.
2) The sign of a great gamepad is something that's functional for platformers and fighting games, and the Xperia Play's is easily better than the Nyko Playpad's, Red Samurai's and Gametel's Controller. As for the touchpads, that will vary by how well the developer of question implements it. Most games do an okay job, a lot of games utilize it in an absolutely great fashion (Shadowgun, Dead Space, Modern Combat 4, NOVA 2, Sacred Odyssey, Age of Zombies, Air Attack HD, Dead Trigger) but every once in a blue moon you find a game where the developer just didn't know what they were doing.
3) Yep, check out THIS THREAD made by my guy ozzmanj1
4) It's actually one of the easiest phones in the world to root and customize. zergRush rooting is stupidly easy, and a lot of ROMs can be drag-and-drop flashed with FlashTool.
I have this posted on thevlink that TL added just as a word of caution when looking for batteries
" Prior to buying the 2600mha battery I purchased a 1950 battery from ebay, it had the same form factor as the stock battery and I had serious issues with my phone. Phone was glitchy. Found out the battery (1950mha) was not outputting a sustained output level, it was all over the place. It was also from Hong Kong. The reason why a then purchased the 2600 was because of the positive reviews for it. Needless to say that 2600 was the best purchase I have made all year."
If you want a bigger Mha battery don't look for them in the same size as stock. Those over mha batteries tend to be inconsistent and will get very hot as that cram for juice into the tighter space. It could possible ly damage your phone if not at least give you a shortend battery life all around. Just my two cents from my experiences. Ad actually this battery is about twice as thick as stock battery but it lasts for 2 1/2 to 3 days and I think its easier to hold the gamepad, but not like it was uncomfortable to begin with. Anyways I am shutting up now. Back to your normally scheduled thread topic.
Thanks TL.

Yes this phone is amazing on gaming but I'm afraid that its going to die soon as dev's are having a hard time getting android 4.2.2 running on the play which I would kill to have....so anyways if you plan on running a bunch of ROMs and longer dev support I would stick with the s3....I would love to have a s3 and would die for a s4 as I don't game much and the lack of storage really upsets me....anyways yea that's my thoughts

The SIII is an awesome phone, but how frustrating is playing Super Mario World or Zelda DX with a touchsceen ? ...
I made a 'DIY GameKlip' and got a PS3 controller, it's the best setup to Play emulator (Maybe with Note II for the screen), but i really don't see me bringing this around.
How hard would it be to create a All-In-One High capacity battery + Sliding Gamepad door for SIII ? Would it be possible to communicate via NFC and use the extended battery to power it up ?
That would be way to hard to make. Anyway, if there was an s3 with a gamepad, i would by it when it first comes out.

I don't believed the s3 has NFC does it??? Anyways I believed this question would best be asked in the s3 section...I would believed that it would be hard without making a really bulky and battery consuming device

xda got an awesome community, i'm pretty sure this is something that can be true one day.
Maybe i'm going to think this through and make a kickstarter project to make this become true.
Maybe i'll buy a S4 and make this for the S4, i was already planning to make a case/door with a microSD hub, plugging on adaptator on the phone and having 2 or 4 microSD slot on the door, all this would be bulky and not that cheap, but worthy.
Paper, pencil, Google, and let's start thinking.
You can get the Play for really cheap now, so I'd say keep the S3. The experience is completely different. The Xperia Play is old, and if you've used the S3, you WILL feel lag on the Xperia Play, unless you're completely impervious to lag/stuttering.

Xperia Play has an internal ps1 emulator made by sony (who clearly have ps1 sources- way past full speed) So if you were to uncap speed maybe it would get 200+ fps.
NDS Games are far, far away, even my s3 only gets them at half speed in peak speeds, don't expect the play to do better because 1 core that is just slightly above the strength of 1 s3 core but the s3 has 4 cores so only half power is used for nds emulation.

i'd better go with the new HTC one as a base, because of the stereo front speakers and the better hardware
This sounds like a really cool & Fun thing to do, but even if anything were to go ahead and happen sony would shut it down as "Xperia Play Gamepad - Slideout" is patented...
So their would have to be some other mechanic other than a slide out!
But if this really happens, We would all be the ones LAUGHING in Sonys Face about THE COMMUNITY Creating a V2 of their successor!, They dont want to make a v2 because of the "PS Vita" Sales, I mean that thing was TERRIBLE!
So if this does conntinue on, im glad to contribute on the software side!,
but using galaxy s3 as base means that he cant do it
he should use xperia z as base so he can port sony framework to it and get all xperia play games work on that with jb
Beat me too it.
I was also beginning to do research of my own to begin on my own build (I was waiting till It was finished to post) also I agree with pedyvirus that the xperia z would be a better base.
QUESTIONS?
What specs are you hoping to have? (minimum)
What major changes are you hoping to integrate into your xperia?
Lastly wouldn't the slide out keyboard be fine as long as you don't try to make money off of it?
GOOD LUCK AND PLEASE KEEP US UPDATED

Personally I like the gamepad being part of the phone this way there are no connection errors, no need for Bluetooth, or compatibility issues. That's what makes the xperia play so amazing, its there when you need it with no hassle. If we were to have a gamepad case we would just be another smartphone.
ALTHOUGH if you are interested in game cases the best I've seen at the moment is Bladepad. It is only for iphone at the moment but it will be coming to android by the end of this year or beginning of next. Just go to Bladepad.com to check it out.

Maybe donate 'x amount' and receive a free phone but still, the undertaking of this project is likely the most ambitious on all of xda. I wish him luck but I won't be holding my breath.

I'm still breathing, bit I love to dream too!
I really like Thea idea of this.
I think the specs shouldn't be too
powerful(snapdragon 800 etc ).
They minimum I'd like to see is dual core clocked at 1.5hgz
I don't know why but I prefer dual then quad core and gpu of
Snapdragon 300.
But I don't really know alot on develoing phones but I would love
get my hands on xperia play 2 even if it had a dear price
I'd buy it
13mp camera 1080p
vita analogs
Nice clicky buttons like the old play maybe two separate pads that slide out to the side?
Exmor r
Bravia
1.7Ghz
Kickass snapdragon
2gb ram
To some up make it a ridiculously kickass phone.

You could even try and make a phone case which could also be a gamepad
Just an idea

Personally I like the gamepad being part of the phone this way there are no connection errors, no need for Bluetooth, or compatibility issues. That's what makes the xperia play so amazing, its there when you need it with no hassle. If we were to have a gamepad case we would just be another smartphone.
ALTHOUGH if you are interested in game cases the best I've seen at the moment is Bladepad. It is only for iphone at the moment but it will be coming to android by the end of this year or beginning of next. Just go to Bladepad.com to check it out.

is there actually an android version of the bladepad? cuz it is exactly what i had in mind 1 or 2 years ago when i saw the play the very first time and immediately knew the pad had to be portable over to another device as the hardware evolves faster than a successor would be created.

Not yet there should be one by the end of the year though but the problem is there's so many android devices it would be hard to support so they're probably only going to support certain popular phones or else theyll make a general one for certain sizes that clips on the back

Questions for everyone.
Just for fun lets have hear some opinions on xperia play 2.
Q#1
What are your 3 must haves for an xperia play 2?
Mine are #1 Physical analog sticks. I don't care if they are psp nubs, ps vita type analog, or real playstation analog sticks.
#2 Awesome sound quality (loud and clear) xperia play did this great and I hope they continue with this.
#3 An amazing screen I'm talking about HD to the extreme with the quality of games being so high now we need something to back that up.
Q#2
What design would you like Clamshell, slider, or candybar.
I would prefer a clamshell design with 2 screens one on the inside and one on the outside. This to me would be the best way to incorporate the analog sticks and massive speakers. also it would cool if it paused what you were doing on your first screen so when you were done gaming you can go back to what you were doing as soon as you close it. I like the xperia for the fact that you can hide the controls and hopefully the xperia play 2 will also have this business on the outside gaming on the inside.
Q#3
lastly, this is random but what color/material would you like?
If it was a color option it would be red all the way.
But if there was an metal one like the htc one that would be so awesome
