I want to make an Xperia Play 2 - Xperia Play General

xp2 is on hold.

i'd better go with the new HTC one as a base, because of the stereo front speakers and the better hardware

This sounds like a really cool & Fun thing to do, but even if anything were to go ahead and happen sony would shut it down as "Xperia Play Gamepad - Slideout" is patented...
So their would have to be some other mechanic other than a slide out!
But if this really happens, We would all be the ones LAUGHING in Sonys Face about THE COMMUNITY Creating a V2 of their successor!, They dont want to make a v2 because of the "PS Vita" Sales, I mean that thing was TERRIBLE!
So if this does conntinue on, im glad to contribute on the software side!,

but using galaxy s3 as base means that he cant do it
he should use xperia z as base so he can port sony framework to it and get all xperia play games work on that with jb

Beat me too it.
I was also beginning to do research of my own to begin on my own build (I was waiting till It was finished to post) also I agree with pedyvirus that the xperia z would be a better base.
QUESTIONS?
What specs are you hoping to have? (minimum)
What major changes are you hoping to integrate into your xperia?
Lastly wouldn't the slide out keyboard be fine as long as you don't try to make money off of it?
GOOD LUCK AND PLEASE KEEP US UPDATED

You could even try and make a phone case which could also be a gamepad

Personally I like the gamepad being part of the phone this way there are no connection errors, no need for Bluetooth, or compatibility issues. That's what makes the xperia play so amazing, its there when you need it with no hassle. If we were to have a gamepad case we would just be another smartphone.
ALTHOUGH if you are interested in game cases the best I've seen at the moment is Bladepad. It is only for iphone at the moment but it will be coming to android by the end of this year or beginning of next. Just go to Bladepad.com to check it out.

i'll by your xperia play 2

Wow this is amazing. Maybe tegra 4 base and massive amount of ram. 5inches or more display. For controls if slide out is patended use on side (psp like) and clampshell (3ds like).
Im considering getting nvdia shield once released, but with this, with phone function i think this will be much better.

Hi guys,
an update:
looks like there is only one guy who is interested in making this device a reality. I won't say, but he's "pretty" well known in the mod scene.
I am still looking for people who are good at electronics
If you feel you have the talent, email me and I will support you

I'll definitely buy an Xperia Play successor, but I'm not that good in micro-scale Electronics. I really hope the best for this project.

I do hope for the best of this project. My suggestions are for the minimum spec it can run PSP games smoothly on PPSSPP. Has its own Game Keyboard, but still affordable

Unless he obtains the rights to use the hardware and goes through all the other legal issues, I dont see this available for sale. Maybe donate 'x amount' and receive a free phone but still, the undertaking of this project is likely the most ambitious on all of xda. I wish him luck but I won't be holding my breath.

I'm still breathing, bit I love to dream too!

I really like Thea idea of this.
I think the specs shouldn't be too
powerful(snapdragon 800 etc ).
They minimum I'd like to see is dual core clocked at 1.5hgz
I don't know why but I prefer dual then quad core and gpu of
Snapdragon 300.
But I don't really know alot on develoing phones but I would love
get my hands on xperia play 2 even if it had a dear price

I'd buy it
13mp camera 1080p
vita analogs
Nice clicky buttons like the old play maybe two separate pads that slide out to the side?
Exmor r
Bravia
1.7Ghz
Kickass snapdragon
2gb ram
To some up make it a ridiculously kickass phone.

is there actually an android version of the bladepad? cuz it is exactly what i had in mind 1 or 2 years ago when i saw the play the very first time and immediately knew the pad had to be portable over to another device as the hardware evolves faster than a successor would be created.

Not yet there should be one by the end of the year though but the problem is there's so many android devices it would be hard to support so they're probably only going to support certain popular phones or else theyll make a general one for certain sizes that clips on the back

Questions for everyone.
Just for fun lets have hear some opinions on xperia play 2.
Q#1
What are your 3 must haves for an xperia play 2?
Mine are #1 Physical analog sticks. I don't care if they are psp nubs, ps vita type analog, or real playstation analog sticks.
#2 Awesome sound quality (loud and clear) xperia play did this great and I hope they continue with this.
#3 An amazing screen I'm talking about HD to the extreme with the quality of games being so high now we need something to back that up.
Q#2
What design would you like Clamshell, slider, or candybar.
I would prefer a clamshell design with 2 screens one on the inside and one on the outside. This to me would be the best way to incorporate the analog sticks and massive speakers. also it would cool if it paused what you were doing on your first screen so when you were done gaming you can go back to what you were doing as soon as you close it. I like the xperia for the fact that you can hide the controls and hopefully the xperia play 2 will also have this business on the outside gaming on the inside.
Q#3
lastly, this is random but what color/material would you like?
If it was a color option it would be red all the way.
But if there was an metal one like the htc one that would be so awesome

Actual Video of psp phone

Im sorry if this is the wrong thread to put this on well here is a video www.youtube.com/watch?v=oFVTQ2cd3kY&feature=player_embedded#at=63
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
either the video is fake, or gingerbread isn't as revamped as people think. the phone is apparently running 2.3, yet i don't see any differences from 2.2 other than that little white thing.
The screen looks too small to be a decent gaming device, plus when you get those people who keep calling till you pick up interrupting your game....fail.
I highly doubt this is Sony's flagship PlayStation phone device. Anyone who grew up with PSone, ps2, psp or even PS3 knows otherwise. Sony hasn't announced it and I hope to god they never do given this shoddy imitation of a real gaming device...
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
It does sort of look like a PSP go...
And the black notification bar with green accents .... I'm not sure j like the green accents and it appeared that when he was in the app the colors were more like the defaults. Not sure if that last sentence made sense ...
Either way, PSP phone seems very real and this seems like very much it.
SWYPED from my SUPASONIC
As long as It doesn't have a screen any smaller than 4 inches, this is the one phone that could make you trade in the evo! Theres a bunch of key features the guy in the video didn't point out like the shoulder buttons on the top of the phone or the dual optical track-pads in the center of the slide out area.
Did anyone happen to notice that, in the video, they never showed the "controller" part of the phone being used? That makes me wonder if it is real or not..
If it is a new PSP phone, it is missing a lot of buttons. that almost looks like a controller from 20 years ago (no analog stick and missing a few other buttons.) It wouldn't be a big thing if it was nintendo, but Sony always touts their gaming as more hardcore than that controller would indicate.
That being said, I am definitely interested in seeing where this goes if it is real.
It's not missing any buttons, the analog sticks is that metal part. Most likely a touch screen analog controller.
As far as incoming calls go, I'm pretty sure they have some kind of pausing mechanizim that gets deployed when a call comes in.
I would think that Sony would have some type of launcher to launch PSP or Android. Sooner or later the Source Code for the PSP app will be leaked and ported

and when dat happens, u can now play PSP games as .isos like u do with a modded psp now a days.
even with apk being stolen/released, it would be pointless. Im pretty sure the hardware in that device is well above any hardware that is out at the moment. Would cause major lag on the device if it used the gpu/cpu that are on phones like evo/epic/etc..

Then and Now

This is my opinion about Xperia Play's rise from it's announcement until now.
Then:
Xperia Play was at the time of it's announcement the long-expected "PlayStation Phone", the phone that could also play PSP games. Unfortunately, it wasn't like that, so most of the people who were excited about this phone had lost all their interest. Only a few remained interested in this phone at it's beginning and so it is that XPlay's popularity has been so low on the first three months. At that time it was seen as:
- A phone with the last Android version that time - 2.3.2
- It had just a few optimised games, already known by others
- It had only a PSX game
- A thick phone with a bad design
- It was almost as expensive as iPhone (between $750 and $800)
Now:
Although no one could imagine a phone that was already labeled as a dissapointment could be 10 times better after some months, it changed a lot. At this point I would say to others that you can't even compare XPlay with Vita, because it's far much better. More and more people are becoming interested again and it's popularity is rasing to the top. It was the work of SE company and developers that brought up this phone's popularity and awesomeness. XPlay now has or will have:
- Android 4.0 (upcoming)
- Ability to fully play PC games with OnLive
- Lots of software changes made by SE through updates (like the 720p filming)
- Lots of mods which made our lifes easier made by devs D)
- Ability to play PSX titles through PSXPeria and FPse
- Ability to play PSP and PSX original games through PlayStation Pocket (upcoming)
- Over 200 optimised games
- Some games were for a period of time XPlay only
- The price went down a lot (now it's between $380 and $420)
Also Merry Christmas everyone!
This is true... however I always had faith in the phone getting better.
There were just so many people who were impatient and wanted to throw their toys on release day and have a cry and then sell the phone... Obviously weren't real gamers to begin with.

But the phone was marketed to them. Sony didn't really try to push it for gamers only. look at the advertising, Kristen Schaal playing two roles, the slogan "Everything you need and the one thing you want"... None of that is designed to appeal to hardcore teen gamers, but to a more adult audience.
To be honest I wasn't disappointed with the phone when it came out, I was just stoked I could beat the first level of Super Mario 3 without wanting to throw my phone in anger.
But like a fine wine it got better with age.
$380? Its going at around €200 in the EU. Got mine for €160 unlocked myself.
Also the phone has flaws, and networks seem to be dropping it. Not worth €500 IMO. Worth €160? Id happily pay €240 for it tbh

Far as I'm concerned, it is perfect.
I've always wanted a device that's truly all-in-one. I'm talking about something that navigates, plays music, plays movies, sorts/views pictures, checks my e-mail for all my accounts, can stream all sorts of media to and from the device, takes care of all my office needs, records video in HD, allows video chat, social networking, group chats, provides a prime web browsing experience, allows me to check my bank balance, lets me take notes, record lectures, does all the phone basics, allows true voice control, lets me quickly jot down notes, allows easy access to the file system, AND plays games with a sense of tactility, responsiveness and precision... without any kind of ridiculous external controller that must be separately charged, assembled and/or paired.
No other phone or game device does that. None.
This does all that... with smooth operation in everything from games to day-to-day menus, great battery life, various UIs that are so infinite in possibility that I switch them roughly every week, simplicity, enough ability to customize so that the device works itself around me (and not the other way around - hear that Apple iOS?) and a level of consistent competence that makes me wonder if there's any point in a phone stronger than this.
I started off very critical, and this thing has passed at everything I've thrown at it with flying colors. There is absolutely nothing else on the market that does this as well as the Xperia PLAY does. Other solutions bring physical controls to smartphone gaming, but they ALWAYS have **** support outside of emulators... not a single one has over non-emulated 200 games, and not a single one operates without all that pairing nonsense.
I could complain about the 400MB of memory, but with the ADB trick I've hit 183 installs and still haven't taken up enough memory to make it say I'm running out of space. I could complain that it's not a dual-core, but the only people that'd really complain about that are the entry-level G4TV-watching tech-newbies who don't know how a good GPU/RAM can change the tides when processor strength initially looks small... with games like Dead Space running so smoothly, seems like tossing in a stronger processor would be detrimental to the battery life before it actually does anything useful.
So yeah... I'm satisfied
I actually agree. It gained its hype although no one really noticed it during its launch. But since the price has gone down to £160 im sure it's going to get alot of attraction now

TBH if it was marketed to teen gamers there would have been no way in hell I would have bought it.
I am an old school gamer and wanted a good mobile for work and for gaming.
The only 2 things I wish the device had was 12mp Camera and an HDMI port. But will be definitely be buying the X Play 2... But now that Sony has taken over the mobile division it is more likely to be an actual "PlayStation phone".
i do agree , i think we all agree

Someone needs to make a portable device that allows you to insert a SIM and bluetooth out to other devices supporting UART profile[for general GSM commands, SMS, whatnot] & Audio profile(? for voice talk/call).
Bundle with an app to parse these and wuala, you got yourself a generic telephone-bluetooth thingy that pairs with any device(that supports the proper bluetooth profiles) [come to think of it, almost little to no device support these profiles hmm no wonder this kind of device dont exists in the marke *runs for cover*]

Regarding its TV connecting feature, it seem alternatively you can just connect your PC or Game Console to the TV and use a bluetooth/wireless gamepad. It said it has the feature like OnLive, but you need to have an nVidia video card (which mean also a running PC), and even if it can stream the game over 3G/4G network and use it outside your home, would the latency be better than OnLive? I think yes actually. But really I don't see a compelling reason to get this unless you want Tegra exclusive games, since you can just use a highend Android phone or tablet and a bluetooth gamepad, which can still be more pocket-able than this device: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1703567677/icontrolpad-2-the-open-source-controller

Is 2013 the year for Android home gaming consoles or something? First the OUYA now this? I respect the fact they're trying to give people more variety over tradition game consoles. But I mean... are Android games REALLY that good? I mean if your on the go, you pull out your phone and play MC3 or whatever, when your home wouldn't you much rather play xbox or something? Or even connect your phone via HDMI (excluding XP obviously) to your TV? I just don't think android games are THAT good to have home consoles dedicated to them.
If they made a smaller version that incorporates a phone then I'd definitely be interested.

What intrigues me is how you configure the controls? have its own mapping system too??
As I see console games perfect.
But for uses such as messages and calls I doubt,
It depends on the point of view,
But as I said, as a console, would be perfect.

Again, pointless to compare this to Xplay.
This is one big bulky controller with integrated screen.
Xperia Play is essentialy phone and has very convenient desing when it comes to gamepad, you can "hide" it if you want.
And again, Sony didnt say "we wont be making Xperia Play 2"
The anwser was something along the lines "we currently are not making Xperia Play" which rather means they were not working on new model, not that they ditched the whole idea.
I already argued in one of the threads that Sony WILL make new Play. They have everything they need right now or under development like new, mature hardware/technology (reason #1 N-GAGE and N-GAGE2 failed), Software which is not all supported by one model (#2 why N-GAGE failed) and a position to get enough regonizion for their device.
Playstation Mobile is still under development so I guess we can start waiting for XP2 after they get PSM fully geared and proper hardware (for that time) ready. Give it year or two.

Anybody else feel like they have a dead phone?

Just like the title says guys, does anybody else feel like this thing in my hand died a long time ago? And to have a physical controller built in isn't enough to keep me on board maybe for alot of the simple minded folks out there but this xplay literally died once something better came my way. Opinions? I know there are haters out there so bring it!

Re: Anybody weeks feel like they have a dead phone?
It make plenty sense buddy I've just grown up and gotten tired of the slow laggy unresponsive way behind the times that is the xperia play. Maybe you should wake up also. And to the people who are hoping, wishing, dying for an xperia play 2, you really need to give your head a shake and snap out of that dream your locked into cause it won't happen
Sent from the scary door....
Exactly the opposite for me... but then again my experience with the Xperia Play hasn't really left a lot to be desired.
First of all, there's a bit of irony here that kinda makes me grin... and it's that you're a huge part of the reason I've been getting nothing but flawless performance out of my Xperia Play. Do you remember being the creator of this topic? All since you posted that, I've been using, re-using and referring people to that particular ROM because it gave me level of consistent smooth function that can be described as nothing less than 'perfect'. Sure it's not Ice Cream Sandwich, Jelly Bean or whichever bundle of already-existing abilities that people decide to call new for whichever fad update people go wild over... but since these android updates are generally repackaged abilities that any owner of >2.1 Android can get, there's not much reason for me to sacrifice the polished stability of my GB build for anything else. Don't need to upgrade to ICS/JB for notification toggles, because we can already get something that includes far more customization than anything ICS/JB's stock options offer (LINK). Don't need JB's Project Butter because the performance was already silky smooth... we can the look of ICS/JB (LINK), we can get the data monitoring/data management of ICS/JB (LINK), the camera (LINK) and gallery (LINK) of ICS/JB, and even the power management (LINK)... all without ICS/JB.
The idea that this phone *died* because of slow-ness, lag or unresponsiveness always sounds odd to me because my Xperia Play hasn't really ever been slow or unresponsive. Like you though, I was always open to the idea of something better... which is why I reached out to more powerful phones like the Atrix, Evo 3D and Galaxy S3 - thinking that a paired PS3 controller or MOGA would give me a superior experience. Know what happened? The Atrix pretty much self-destructed, the Evo 3D's gaming worth ended up being a trainwreck with loads of games sacrificed the moment it was upgraded to ICS and the situation for GS3 gaming ended up being a frustrating mess. First off, having to pair the MOGA to it alone turns what should be quick and seamless into a chore - and that holds true regardless of whether we go through the MOGA App itself or the "alleged" universal IME. If the quotation didn't make it clear, there's a lot about the universal IME I dislike.
On paper, that should be the clear-cut killer app that totally makes the Xperia Play obsolete... yet it does everything but. It'll make the MOGA ideal for emulators, but by far and large - the appeal of the Xperia Play has been that it's so good at present-generation gaming that it doesn't need to piggyback yester-decade's antiquated games. Not only is the universal IME a ***** to set up, but there's so much sacrificed when trying to pretend the MOGA+uIME replaces Xperia Play. The lack of a d-pad automatically compromises it's practicality for many games where analog locomotion feels weird, and if we want the MOGA Controller that does have a d-pad, we'd be sacrificing portability even more than the existing MOGA (which is easily the bulk of two Xperia Plays even before a phone is put into it)... but for the sake of getting into just how horribly off it is to say MOGA > Xperia Play, let's pretend it isn't automatically on a lower level because of it's cumbersomeness.
Just as an example, let's cite Eternal Legacy. Eternal Legacy is natively a touch-only game that got a special edition for Xperia Play that makes it completely optimized... and by complete; I mean the physical gamepad can be used to manipulate the entire game from menu navigation, map navigation and combat. While it would seem like an RPG should be okay for a touch-screen, having physical controls is still much more precise and much faster way to perform multi-menu operations... so a gamepad is definitely the superior option. First of all, finding a working version of the damn game for the GS3 is annoying in itself... and since it was only truly prime with Xperia Play's gamepad, we have to resort to the only half-ass usable MOGA+uIME+GameKeyboard (or JC6) combination which requires tons of setup, and outputs an experience that's only half-workable (it really only works for field navigation... nothing else). We can plug any phone of any specs into that equation and get the same result, and plug many different games into that equation to also find games in high masses that are only half-playable.
If you see where this is going, you see that I just stepped up to the most well-known of the "steroid phones" and actually ended up making sacrifices... and for what? Fluidity? My Xperia Play experience has already been smooth... and on a stock ROM. We could revive the note that I'm a heavy supporter of GameKeyboard (which also delivers the same sense of half-playability to native touch games)... but Xperia Play's already got over 450 Android titles stacked under it's belt with the count still growing... so it's not only the most heavily supported physical gaming solution, but it's software support is very much so alive... and as the person who's taken on the tooth-gritting (often overwhelming) task of databasing Xperia Play's software releases, I can say from a very strong stance that it's support hasn't faltered.
From here, we could cite the Xperia Play's low internal memory... and to that I'd note how that's become a non-issue with MiniTool Partition and Link2SD. With that combination, I've amassed over 340 installs and I still have 85.4% of my phone storage free.
From here, we could note that Xperia Play's only rocking half a gig of RAM and a single-core processor with it's only real saving grace being an (outdated) Adreno GPU... yet we can have our minds blown as we see beefier phones like the Atrix struggling to run N.O.V.A. 3 as well as the Xperia Play does.
Of course there's stronger phones out there, but I've already got the prime for gaming. MOGA's doing quite well in it's own right and I love to see it getting out of the "only good for emulating old-ass games" category that so many other BT controllers tend to quickly fall into... but it doesn't compare to or replace the Xperia Play at all.
Another thing worth mentioning is just how far it's evolved. Look at any of the old reviews for Xperia Play, and we find that a lot of the original complaints aren't even valid anymore. It records in HD now, the prior complaints of auto-dimming have been handled, and while everyone loved to complain about the lack of integration into Sony's official gaming ecosystem - look at how quiet they've become now that it's been resolved.
Honestly, what puzzles me is exactly what one would be doing to get their Xperia Play to a point of being sluggish, slow or unresponsive. When people see my videos, I'm consistently bombarded with questions about what magic tweaks/kernels/whatnot I used to get my Xperia Play so smooth... and the answer's always the same... nothing. It's a simple stock ROM that I debloated through Root Explorer, paired with a carefully-chosen launcher that's optimal for fluidity and battery life... and it's been VERY smooth, fast and responsive.
Xperia Play's definitely not in the limelight, nor is it burning up the media... and from that it's easy to perceive that the Xperia Play's dead, but for anyone in the know... it's software support and fanbase are still stronger than any other physical gaming medium in the entire world of smartphones. This is why all my stronger phones have been sold or given away so that I can go back to my Xperia Play. No point in having a dual/quad core with as much memory as a desktop computer when my phone's already eating up any software I throw at it with ease.

It's the best gaming phone and multiple-use device by far.
I've recently upgraded to an HTC One X for my daily use phone because it's faster for everyday tasks, but I keep my Xperia Play close by at all times, switching sims if necessary, because it's just so good for gaming.
Re: Anybody weeks feel like they have a dead phone?
I would Luke to add to TL's comment that I too have had the chance to play with (for about 2 days each) a GS3 and an HTC one x and yes they are sweet devices in their own right. But when push came to shove I bought a unlocked xperia play r800at. And have absolutely no regrets. Especially now that I am on or will be in three weeks a GSM phone, all these choices of roms. I've had a pre opus phone two years ago where I used a gamepad overlay for the phone hardware keyboard and sold it on a heartbeat to buy the Verizon xperia play. There too.... no regrets, except thy it's CDMA. But that's a other story. All in all I feel the play is the best multipurpose phone/gaming device out there. Yes its hardware is dated but that hasn't stopped of from still getting game dev love. And lets not even talk about the thousands of roms for emulators. Especially if you have the emus that have been modded to show up in the game launcher.
On a side note. TL what launcher you use on your phone ? I use an older version of go launcher before it became memory hungry. And my phone is super smooth and fast.

How many games don't run fluidly on the XPLAY? From what I have installed, none!! TDKR used to lag a bit, but now my phone runs at 1.8ghz it is smooth as silk!!
I have seen a lot of posts recently with people lambasting the XP saying something like their 10.1" tablet + PS3 dualshock is miles better etc, but these people seem to be missing the point of the XP. Portability!!
For example. If I go shopping with the missus, guaranteed she will go into a clothes shop, where she will spend at least an hour. Before I got my XP, I would be bored within 20 mins, get grumpy, start moaning about my feet, then she would get grumpy and we wouldnt talk for the rest of the day.
Now I have the XP, I merely find a seat, bust out Asphalt, Most Wanted, Mini Motor Racing or one of the other great games I have and wait for her to finish. I'm happy, shes happy, we have a good night!!
My point is that it isnt practical to carry a tablet and PS3 controller everywhere with you, and it would look pretty weird sitting in a shop using that combination anyway!! The phone is always there and always ready.
To each their own...
It all come's down to personal preference. I prefer Android gaming on my Galaxy Nexus or Kyros tablet with a Dualshock 3 and the Sixaxis app, but that doesn't mean i don't like my R800x or that the phone has some sort of "problem" or considered "DEAD". In fact I never had a problem with my R800x and it run's like a champ. There's ton's of great game's that are xp optimized, plenty of custom ROM's, and some awesome theme's. My son love's it and use's it all the time.

TLR owned the OP sooooo bad.
I agree to every word he says.
+1 to you TLR.
/==(CyberScopes)==\
I don't think anyone can just knock the OP's post. Without some level of manual software installation or modding, the Play is not flawless. I can vouch for this and it's actually the reason my brother got rid of it once his contract expired. You shouldn't have to modify or custom install anything for your device to run smooth. Sure, stock GB is good, but it is not perfect or flawless like some are claiming. The PLAY is a fun and enjoyable gaming device, but its performance is not superb, it's tolerable. I do not think TLR's or some of these other guys' opinions are applicable to 100% Pure stock Xperia PLAY. One thing that pissed me off when I was pure stock was the internal memory running out. Come on guys and/or gals, stop practicing fanboyism and call a spade a spade.
In regards to the OP saying they're looking for something better. If you still wanna give Sony a second chance, check out the Xperia Z. It's between that and the yet to be announced Galaxy S4 for me. Both have pretty high price tags though if you're buying them unlocked.
Well said TLR and ozzmanj1
Without repeating the flawless statements they have already made , :good: to you guys, right on point!
Is the Xperia Play dead? Do XPlay owners need to grow up and move on? No and No, Im 26 and just got an R800at , ditching Verizon and went to Tmobile. I never found my Play to be slow , sluggish or un responsive. Im running a rooted stock debloated rom with holo launcher and I couldn't be happier, it does everything I need and then some (still to this day) and if were ever in discussion about "you have to root and debloat the XPLay to use it" I honestly root and debloat every android device I own, my entire family uses Droid branded androids and I rooted/debloated all of those as well. Rooted = Liberated !
The developer community here is strong, their are some great minds working on stuff for this device still. Cheers to all of them !
I just also built my 20yr old sister an XPlay and she loves it, she took it over the SG3 for the pure gaming factor (smart choice, especially since SG4 is in the works you would be a fool to buy a SG3 now, and of course I built it for her for free) and I even built one for my 7yr old nephew one, I of course removed and possibilities to make phone calls or text and its not in service, he is just gaming away on it. Hands down, the Xperia Play is a great device and I for one and damn happily to own / use it.
Re: Anybody weeks feel like they have a dead phone?
Whilst I'm not disagreeing with you (the xperia play is not a great phone in stock form, too much bloatware, Sony's stupid habit of low storage on every phone etc) I have to say that it does come into its own when modded, even just rooted. The thing is that most phones feel redundant after 6 months or so now and it seems to be a trend. Apple know it, which is why they release an iPhone every 6 month's. The difference is that some people with buy the new, others will mod the old and make it new again. When I had my iPhone 3g years back it was made redundant early on but after jailbreaking it did multitasking, background wallpapers, folders, everything apple said it couldn't!
The thing is that this is xda developers and the main use for this forum is modifying their phones so if someone criticises then it is obvious that other people will tell them to mod.
Talking of criticism, I have been on this forum for years modding various phones, but have never seen so many people criticising a single handset as they do the XP. It's such a shame as for me it is what I have wanted for so long, something that my N-Gage years ago never managed!!

well, my first dissapointment was Gameloft games. Standard GL games like 9mm and shadow guardian run on low graphic while galaxy s get the normal version.
I still can't find in any way a good use for a phone with multi-cores, honestly. Faster with everyday use? Come on! As if you use your phone for cement mixing! The Xperia PLAY is just enough for my business and work needs. As for gaming, TOUCHSREEN GAMING SUCKS BALLS BIG TIME. Oh, get an external controller? Hell, no! I won't be lugging that around! I'd rather buy a gaming desktop rig with all that money spent on a high-end device and an external controller.

You are comparing a 2 years old phone, one with single core old CPU technology against a newer gen quadcore device with highend GPU and 5 times the amount of ram.

What Do Other People Think Of Your Play?

Was looking for something that went underneath the Sofa and couldn't be asked to find a torch so used the Rear 'LED' Flash light, much to the amazement of others as they thought it was incredibly brighter compared to their iCraps.
What other things have people said about your Play?

Well a lot of people like the gamepad. When you mention games like GTA, some peoples interest increases. Through all the tweaks and various great work of the developers on here, my phone runs quite smooth and handles well meaning it isn't really trashed for being old and outdated. It does lag or slow down sometimes but i guess that's to be expected. Some just call it a "PSP phone"

One time someone was even thinking that it can run every game from PSP, not tech guy tho
Some people are whining about outdated hardware, but when I ask them what can their phone do which mine can't they can't really say and they always play games which don't even need sd data
Other people say that not many games are optimised for it, I ask for example and then after they hear that almost every example is optimised they shut up
Other people agree with me that it's the best phone for gaming.
My Best Friends are bit jealous of 4 different roms of any choice (gb, ics, jb) but they don't play as hard as I do on phone even though they agree that it is a good phone.
Overall opinion is poor but after I slide the game pad people realise what it is and mostly they change their opinion to good/very good.

Everyone that asks me what phone do I have, after I open the slider, they realize that no matter what phone they have, just looks like a toy (with expensive/unnecessary gadgets to accomplish what the integrated gamepad of the XPlay does) in front of my Xperia Play.
In my country/area there are a generalized gaming culture, so that's the cause of this reaction.
Yeah, never missing that person that thinks it can run PSP games (although thanks to PPSSPP maybe in the future, at least struggling), the form factor deceives anyone

My sis thinks its cool and she almost bought one for herself but went with Neo instead (because she didnt want to have the same phone as I did)
Yeah, surprisingly many people get excited when they see GTA 3 on it, few people wanted to go even more indepth than games and appearance (like specs)
Also before I had bought my XPlay, some cellphone store worker was interested about XPlay when we asked did they have any (they only had Arc), he said its a shame they are not selling it because he would have loved to try it out or even buy it. This was way after XPlay's retail release, like 6 months afterwards so he was genuinely interested about it.

Unless you really need the money, I would keep the phone. It's really a one of a kind.
I remember the first time I took my PLAY out of the box.. it was so beautiful, I simply couldn't put it down. Whenever I pick this phone up again and just look at it, I still get that feeling of how special it is. I own quite a few 'nice' phones, but none of them give me that sensation of awesomeness that the Xperia Play does. That's why I will never part with it.

Really? Because all the recent notable Play Store releases from Modern Combat 4, Aralon, Scaresoul, ME: Infiltrator, Dark Knight Rises, NOVA 3, Dead Trigger, Repulze all the way up to Bladeslinger runs like a dream on Xperia Play, and there's been topics dedicated to Xperia Play running current-gen games with extraordinary performance.
What'd YOU do to your Xperia Play to get current games running at 10FPS?
I got a stock ROM without as much as Chainfire, and Xperia Play handles 'em like they were made for it.
