Please help but beware I am a totally noob so you may have to explain things like you would to a five year old.
I rooted my Nook Color (firmware 1.4.3) with instructions from a Youtube video. (CyanogenMod 7) It allows us to boot to CyanogenMod with the sd card OR by removing the sd card it boots normally into the Nook Color.
It worked great for me but I lent the Nook to my sister and when she connected it to her pc (Windows 7) it indicated that it could not find the driver software for the nook - there is now a "yellow !" in her device manager so we uninstalled that and rebooted with the Nook plugged in and turned on but it still indicated that it was unsuccessful. The two drives do appear in my computer (F & G) however if we click on either one of them it says to insert a disk.
We have tried booting without the sdcard in it - tried different ports on the pc (in fact she has another pc running Windows 7 & it does the same thing) - we also tried a different cable. Nothing has helped so far.
Please help. Thank you in advance.

I am assuming you want to connect to the PC to transfer some files back and forth rather than to connect ADB. If you don't know what ADB is, that means you were not wanting that.
To fix the issue, boot to CM7 and go to settings, applications, development and uncheck Android debugging. Then connect the cable to the PC (I always have to do it twice), and a screen on the nook will pop up saying "USB connected" with a "turn on USB connection" button. Touch that button and a confirmation box pops up. Click OK. You should now see the drives on the PC and they should work. If that first screen does not pop up after plugging in twice, open the notification area from the bottom of the screen and a notification that says "USB connected" should be there. Touch that and the pop up will open.
The issue was the debugging choice which is an advanced feature you probably did not want and Windows was looking for a driver to make it work.

You are spot on - i have no idea what "ADB" is and just want to be able to transfer files from the pc to the Nook Color. We will try as you suggest and let you know how it goes - THANK YOU for helping!
This worked PERFECTLY!!!!! Thank you leapinlar for your 'easy to understand' directions and providing us with the answer so quickly. We just couldn't be happier! Many many thanks!

Hope the title makes sense!
When I first plugged my HD into my lappy via USB, it (lappy) detected a new device (good).
"RSIND" or something similar I think...
Anyway, it then prompted me to install the drivers for it (a little strange I thought, but not unheard of) - but failed.
I hit 'cancel' thinking I would sort it out later
ActivSync is all working nicely.
Now though, when I plug the HD in, the lappy doesn't detect new hardware, and even forcing an 'add new device' via CP, it fails to detect the HD.
Irrespective of if I choose Activesync or Data device on the HD.
any ideas please?
Lappy is running XP, fully up to date on patches etc
you will need to go into device manager on your pc and delete the device (with it disconnected) As it didn't install properly, i'm guessing you will see an "unknown device" in the list.
Make sure you have an internet connection and plug the device in and let it install the drivers.
I had a similar problem, wouldn't be detected as an external drive! Had to factory reset with the SD card inserted.
The initial setup was without the SD card inserted....
I bougt Nook Color this week and messed it up very first day.I rooted it and installe CM7.1.WhenI try to connect to Windows7 pc ,the computer immediately crashes.
2.When I try to use nook it boots in CM7 ok but I keep gettig message "android.process.acore stopped unexpectedly try again_ Force close"every 2-3 seconds and can not get rid of it.I reinstalled CM 7 several times with no effect.I accidently deleted fctory recovery partition and can not go back to original state.I am left with display of bothersome message showing again and again.
Please suggest any answers .
If you are having that many problems already I would start from scratch. If you are able to flash the stock image in CWM but if you cant use this thread. You nook does boot but the thread shows you how to restore it to stock without CWM.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=949699
once you can boot into your nook successfully I would check if your nook has the new partitions vs the old ones. Did the box it came in have a blue dot sticker on it?
This post has the steps for the newer and older partitions. Make sure you have the latest versions of everything, would be my advice.
Some people get that error when Gmail is syncing. You might try to turn off Gmail autosyncing to see if the error persists.
Nook Color does boot alright in CM7 but the annoying message I mentioned keeps coming on every 2-3 seconds.
Try flashing the current nightly. Its pretty stable for me
some problems resolved
Thanks everybody,I tried everyting you people suggested and did not resolve anything and I was almost ready to throw it in trash since I had wiped B&N factoryrecovery partition by mistake and could not go back. Then I wiped out CM7 and installed Honeycomb V2 version Now everything is working .That disgusting message is gone.My pc was crashing because I was connecting Nook to USB3 port.I connected to USB2 port and it does not crash but Nook is not recognised by pc.Windows 7 tries to install drivers for Nook but fails as it can not find drivers.Any suggestions please.

I had similar experience - last week - and learned I just wasn't familiar with the device..
On bottom of Nook Screen - there is a task bar of sorts with a little USB icon that pops up on the NC when plugged into PC (WIN 7 here). Drag the window open from bottom - select option to copy / transfer files to your computer - and then turn on USB storage and your device should show up on pC as MyNOOKcolor - and SD card.
After you're done transferring files, eject both drives individually from your PC ( I do SD card eject 1st - and MyNOOKcolor 2nd ) - and it should close your USB storage on your device and you should be good to go..
Hi guys,
I got me a Defy and wanted to flash CM7/CM9. I got a few problems:
1. What did I do until now?
I rooted with Super one click, es it didn't work with the pushing and exploting the rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin (after exploiting, if the Defy did it properly, it used to exit from shell and the phone remained offline, so no more action could be performed with adb).
Also, ClockworkMod Recovery is installed.
I used this and another push/chmod approach: Cyanogenmod Wiki /Motorola_Defy:_Full_Update_Guide
2. Problem A)
When putting the CM Update zips on the SD card and booting, it will say it can't mount the SD Card.
I mixed some things up and tried to make the SD card mountable again with this approach (last paragraph): Cyanogenmod.com /index.php?title=Motorola_Defy:_Full_Update_Guide&oldid=13776#Problems_with_Android_2.1
By typing too fast i added two incorret entries (shouldn't be a problem).
Somewhere than I read, installing CM7 is only possible with Android 2.2. My Phone says the following:
- System version: Blur_Version.2.51.1.MB525.Retail.en.DE
- Firmware version: 2.1-update1
- Kernel version 2.6.29
3. Problem B)
So I thougth, next approach should be updating to Froyo. Sadly, Motorola Software Update doesn't recognize my phone, wheter with drivers from first link above nor with the drivers that come with the Update center (frankly, I haven't tried first link driver only but Software Update only and both togheter).
Several wipes and factory resets didn't help.
Any thoughts how I could fix this and get me a CM7? Best would be without loosing garantee (I mean sticking with an official software version as downgrade possibility). Should I have updated without ClockworkMod installed? Could return the phone and get me a new one if necessary.
Thanks for your help.
Edit: Is it possible that Motorola Update doesn't work with Win7 64Bit at all?
1st of all you MUST have froyo kernel (but certainly not eclair) before you can install Cm7 properly!
2nd it seems that your SD Card could be corrupted. It's important to eject your device from Windows PC properly before unplugging it. Otherwise you can corrupt your sdcard and/or internal memory.
Here is how you fix both your SD Card and internal FAT32 memory.
1) Plug in the device to the PC.
2) In Android turn on USB
3) The removable drives will show up in Windows.
4) Do one drive at a time. Right click on the removable drive and select Properties.
5) In this screen click the tools tab. Under error checking click the check now button
6) On this screen click the box "Automatically fix errors" and click start.
7) When it finishes it will either tell you if fixed problem or not.
8) If it did fix problems then you will find on the removable drive a folder called FOUND.000, FOUND.001, etc. You can delete those as they are broken files that got corrupt and you probably can’t do anything with them anyway!
9) Now eject the drives properly and you done.
Hope that helps.
Aw, men! I used not to eject any devices from my computer
I will try repairing and the the Software Update Center again.
If not, anybody knows which SBF file from sbf.droid-developers.org/umts_jordan/list.php is the one I would get after updating? I really don't get this list at all.
Thanks.
Ok I checked the sd card and there were no problems. So I switched to "Portal and tools" to check the Defy itself. The the first time Motohelper popped up and said something like:
"Starting the software not possible. In order to start Motorola Phone Portal you have to shut down all Motorola PC software and your phone has to be in one of the following modes: PC Mode, PC Tools or Portal Tools [not readable].
Open USB connection on your device and select either PC Model, PC Tools or Portal Tools"
This message keeps poping up if USB Debugging keeps enabled. Once I disable it and select Portal and tools again no pop up happens but no software (at least visible) starts. Should there pop up something? Start Motorola Phone Portal at device plug in is enabled. Or is this a normal behaviour at all?
Thanks.
Check out device manager in your windows if you have any question marks after connecting your defy to it properly (usb debugging and phone portal on). Maybe you do need some extra drivers on this one.
Well, now i got tired of this and I flashed a SBF with Froyo. Now I`ll trie flashing CM again.
Thanks anyway!
Apologies if this is already posted somewhere. just point me to the link and I'll take a look, but everything I have tried so far has failed.
I have been trying to get adb working on my NookColor under Windows 7. I am running a rooted 1.4.2 stock image. I installed the sdk by following the guide at http://nookdevs.com/NookColor_USB_ADB, but when I get to step III.3.1, the device does not show up where the guide tells me it should. I gget a myNOOKcolor device under Portable Devices instead. I tried following the same procedure for this device, but when I get to step III.3.2.3, I get an error message saying "The folder you specified doesn't contain a compatible software driver for your device. If the folder contains a driver, make sure it is designed to work with Windows for x64-based systems."
I was able to follow the same procedure to install the driver for my MyTouch 4g. It looks to me like the problem s that Windows identifies my Nook as a portable storage device, rather than an unidentified device type, like my MyTouch was. I've tried uninstalling the driver, but it just reinstalls itself when I unplug and plug the device back in.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I looked at your workaround and it did not help. There is no nook entry under "Other Devices" in the device manager. the only entry for my nook is the "myNOOKcolor" under portable devices. When I right click on that and go to details, there is no device id listed.
Is there any chance that I may need to revert to 1.4.1 in order for this to work?

With CM9, you have to be sure to have usb debugging turned on before the device will show up. That guide was written for an earlier version of the stock software. Is there anything like that in your stock software? Do you have to install nook tools to get at the setting? It's been a long time since I played with stock and the software has changed.
Edit: There is an alternate script listed in that referenced page you listed. Did you try that?

I have trtied all the troubleshooting steps in that page, if that's what you mean. Nothing has worked for me so far. I have tried disabling automount and usb debugging, to no avail.
I guess I should ask a new question. If I create a bootable CM7/CM9 sd card, will I be able to copy apk's to /system/app on my nook? That is really the only reason I need adb to work, so I can install non market apps.

Yes, but with difficulty. But you don't really want to install to /system, you want to install to /data (on emmc, which is the difficulty doing it from SD). You can use terminal emulator in CM7 to copy the files to emmc /data/apps. You first have to mount emmc /data. If you want to try that, I can help you.

Well something else actually occurred to me. Will I be able to copy apps to my sdcard (not the CM7 bootable, just a regular sd card), then copy them to /data/app using root explorer? If I can do that, there there's really no problem, I'll just have to deal with the fact that adb doesn't work.
If I can't do that, then yes, please help me do it using a bootable sd

I am using CM10 on my nook color after spending 8+ hours yesterday finally being able to get back to where I started. I can again see my nook and the card but it is now showing up under portable devices. I used to have them listed as drives. this is fine as I have access to the card after I click on the nook in File explorer. I would like it the previous set-up just because Calibre has my card and device flipped and its easy to confuse me. I learned that if I can label my nook f and the card g Calibre will think the first letter is the main drive.
My original reason for this post: I can not find where to disable the automount in CM10 can you tell me where you disabled it? and if anyone can wave their magic wand and get me back to where I can name my nook and card THANKS:fingers-crossed:

You need to activate USB Mass Storage in CM10. It uses MTP by default. Go to settings, storage, menu, USB computer connection and check off Mass Storage rather than MTP. Then they show up as drive letters instead of under portable devices. You may also have to activate in the notification area.
And I think in Windows you can control what the drive letters are. Go to manage computer and select disk management and you can change the drive letters.

THANK YOU, so very much it has been driving me crazy. I knew where that was to change it to mass storage but I just never guessed to hit menu. After I read your post I saw the tiny 3 dots in top right. I really should just wear my glasses
and Yes I have changed the letters in the past as you have noted. However it seems a mute point Calibre just released a new version that lets me correct that problem. However it's nice to have the mass storage issue fixed.
Thanks again
While my original NC is running quite well with the CM10 nightlies, I have lost my ability to use the USB cable as my file transfer source since leaving CM 7.2.
I now do all of my files transfers directly to the SD card by removing it and accessing it directly via my computer.
I get the following when the cable is connected: "USB device not recognized".
I have tried both Media Device and Mass Storage settings to no avail.
This was not an issue with CM 7.2.
Seems to be the only real issue I am experiencing since I was able, with forum help, to redo my inadvertently updated NetFlicks.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

First, don't call the ROM JZ054K, it is CM10. You confuse folks. The problem probably is you have USB debugging enabled. Go to settings, developer options and uncheck Android debugging.

Followed your suggestion and unchecked Android Debugging. Rebooted and then hooked up the USB/Recharge cable. Still have same result with the "USB device not recognized" being displayed by Win7/64 with both Media Device or Mass Storage being selected.
Any other paths to explore on this?
Utilized my ROM nomenclature based on "About tablet: Bulid Number" and will switch to CM10 if that is a confusing issue.

The device id and vendor id are different in the CM10 from CM7, you would need to edit the android_winusb.inf file to include them.

Are you sure it is still unchecked? Did you go back and look after rebooting. You should not have to reboot to turn it off. That device not recognized issue is it is looking for ADB drivers because the debugging box is checked.

The only thing I can think of is to go device manager in Windows and uninstall any devices in portable devices, android phone and under USB controllers, any mass storage devices. Then unplug and replug it back in, assuring debugging is still of. You should now get messages that things are installing, hopefully automatically.

I'm having the same issue, was using the Dec 2 and now 3 nightly. when I get time tonight I will roll back to Dec 1 since I know it was working there. Win7/Win8 here fyi
Unsuccessful
Tried: "...and under USB controllers, any mass storage devices." This actually allowed WE to show "Nook Color" but when I clicked on it, there was nothing there. The unit did temporarily display a USB connection at that time also.
Again, this was not an issue under CM7.2.
Thanks for your ongoing assist!
Update: Okay tried every conceivable way of deleting some or all of USB drivers under DM and reinstalling. Even went into BIOS and turned down USB 3.0 to 2.0!
Again erratically got the Andoid USB screen temporarily a couple of times but could not maintain it.
Definitely getting a Windows "Code 43" error indicator.

If you are getting windows errors installing drivers you may want to look at this post. It is for the HD+ and trying to get ADB working, but there is some interesting stuff there about unsigned windows drivers that may apply to you.

Any idea as to why the issue exists with CM10 and not CM7.2?

Went there (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=34954992) ...did that. Did not work at first, but it did work (somewhat) after I went back in and deleted the three drivers. I was then able to connect and utlilize WE to probe and adjust both emmc and sdcard. Calibre recognized that it was connected but I could not transfer anything directly from it to the NC.
Thanks for all of the help with this. Since I am probably around eight weeks from purchasing my HD+, I will just use the SD card to manually transfer files.
Interesting issue nonetheless!

Had same problem, I went to settings - storage - then the menu box top right (three dots) then choose USB computer connections..
