This is quite interesting re the SD slot (or lack of) question.

Interesting articles. I agree though- I definitely won't be spending the extra money on the 32gb version of the 10.1 because I don't think I'll need it! All my music will be on the cloud, and I will probably stream most of my video watching... I think 16 gb is totally sufficient for my needs. It doesn't bother me in the least that it doesn't come with an SD-card.
The "cloud" is probably nice for the Google engineers with a terabit network, and unlimited data usage, but for me, I'd rather not have a middle-man between me and my data.
This goes especially for stingy middle-men like all the Cell phone carriers and their low bandwidth caps and expensive data plans. Even landline isps are instituting bandwidth caps, so there really isn't a better alternative to a 32gb sd card.

Agreed. Unless Google want's to become an ISP and give bandwidth away for for free, what they think is cool is irrelevent to my reality. I'm already juggling downloads to stay within my 250GB monthly cap by comcast (not to mention what AT&T would do if I started downloading that much content on my mobile plan, assuming their network could even provide it at a reliable, consistent speed). Why would I want to push content through that already constrained and costly pipe, when I can copy it to memory almost instantly from my home network? The answer is: I don't, but THEY want me to. They want us all ot get hooked on cloud storage, because that's just yet one more revenue stream they can create to channel money from our pockets into theirs. That's what business is all about: creating new and better ways to acquire revenue.
I am curious, for what are you planning to use your tab so that 16gb is not enough? I have galaxy tab 7, with 16gb and microSD card, and I am not using totaly more than 5gb, and I have it for 6 months.
Only thing that cross my mind is watching movies while on the trip

There's a good one right there. Of course, with Tegra 2 not being that great for high profile movies, that limits it somewhat. An SD card also makes it easy to quickly move a decent amount of media from one device to another (phone, tablet, etc.) to be able to continue using it on whichever device is most appropriate for where you are.

Primary usage for me would be music files held LOCALLY on the device. Very little in way of movies and photos for me.
The cloud option might work well for me for the more obscure music I don not currently sync over to my phone and do not get a lot of plays. I do want core of my library locally stored for air travel and non-wifi situations.
I have 32GB on my pone today (pretty much same content I would also want on my tablet). I think I could live with a 32GB constraint for a long time.
My use is to make the tablet as my media hub so 32GB is a must.
I would love to use spotify, but when i have cabinets full of CD's and 50GB of music as i use very high bitrate or lossless tracks, streaming seems kind of wasting my money for service like spotify(i would personally actually have something like pandora that's free to a point to find new music over here at Europe).
I wont be streaming anything to my device, but i will be streaming from my device to TV and speaker system.
That is if i can find something as good as airplay from Android side.

32GB is nothing when you want to use the tab as a media player... Even at 720p encodes, thats about 4GB per movie... 64GB or more is needed for any selection
That's all good and dandy when I'm in my house with Verizon FIOS, but when I'm out, it isn't practicle. Not to mention, when I'm home... I'll be using my tv, the desktop or one of my laptops with bigger monitors.
Oh Google... stop being so Apple.

I wonder if that's why native SD card support in Honeycomb 3.* has yet to surface but "we are working on it, until you tweaky tech ppl forget about it and then we can push media control (aka cloud storage aka new hype for just storing media remotely)"
For eventual control in the long run, that way they can be more compliant in the future with record companies for better license control....aka apple! Then those artist can also promote android like they have been doing apple

I have a lot of paid apps from when my Droid was the Android love of my life ($50+ easily). I always did like apps that made my Droid as much of a mini computer as possible, so now those same types of apps I bought back then are even better for getting the most out of my Xoom. They include PhoneMyPC, PrinterShare, DroidScannerPro, & DocumentsToGo.
Since I got my Xoom I've purchased some games, but also AndCAD, which is a fantastic basic AutoCAD-like app that allows me to work on fairly complex part design on the go. It's 25 bucks, the most I've ever spent on an app, but it helped land a $2800 job within one week of buying it.
Good apps are what make Android really outshine other mobile OSes by showing off it's versatility.
I have spent over $50, though I am not sure how much in total. I have had an Android phone since the developer G1 so I have accumulated a lot of cruft.
ADWLauncher EX
Documents To Go
Newsrob
Copilot Live (the initial, more expensive, release)
Copilot Premium (the cheaper, updated app)
A couple of different RDC apps (Pocket Cloud, Xtralogic, and one other that I no longer use)
iDisplay (big let down, but not worth the effort of a refund)
Rom Manager Premium
A dozen or so random games/utilities not worth listing individually (such as sodoku premium, robo defense, SU File Manager, greed, etc...)
Side note, is there any way to permanently remove a paid application from your list? There are a couple I know I will never use again such as greed and scan2pdf. I would just as soon remove those (and some other free apps) from my apps list so it is not so cumbersome to look through.
Too long to even list lol. Been buying apps since the Google g1 phone lol

easy $50+ considering i switched from iphone when my contract came close... at first i bought a few apps that were good and useful to me on my iphone but as not all were ported to android it led me to find other apps and franky some awesome ones at that.. TrackChecker is one as i buy alot from online i can track anything anywhere right on me phone, tab and till it gets to my door
the rest it seems have been listed by other members
I tallied up my apps and I've spent at least $150 on apps in just under 2 years (since the original Motorola Droid). That's less than $10/month, which seems kinda low. I feel the need to go buy a bunch of paid apps now...
Sent from my Xoom using Tapatalk
Not sure. Between $75-$100, I'd guess since I got my Xoom.
Of course, I've been using Android since the day the G1 was released, so I'm sure the grand total is somewhere between $100-$150. It would probably be higher if Google had allowed devs to sell from day one... something that still bums me out. I had built some really popular apps back in the day, and if I could have charged even $.99....
All,
I am from India and seriously considering buying KF.
Only issue is that I am doubtful as to how much of the device's capability would I be able to utilize being outside US.
Also, Would I be able to purchase apps through KF?
What about books and magazines?
Would love to hear from people outside US who have bought KF.
Thanks!
You should adjust your title to ask about whether you should buy it as you live outside the US.
Your thread is right next to another thread with the EXACT same title and about something completely different.
Thanks a lot for the suggestion. Edited the title. Hoping to get a better response this time

Using a Kindle outside of the US is not a problem if you are happy to do a little work.
It is possible to buy apps and watch moves via Amazon prime using a vpn.
It is also relatively easy to side load apps from other sources by literally searching for the apk file and then download and install them directly to the Kindle.
Again it is not too difficult to root the device and install a different launcher and the full Android Market, you will lose the ability to stream from Amazon prime but to be honest you won’t be losing much.
Ive gone through all the above and am now running the CM7 Rom which again completely changes the device to a fully unlocked working Android tablet which is not pad for 200 dollars.
The only downside I have found is nothing to do with geological location, for me a tablet this size is just too small.

What he said. It's still a great device to use outside the U.S. If you don't plan on messing with it (rooting, installing another launcher or CM7/9) and want to keep it on stock like its meant to be used, then don't buy it.
i'm using kindle fire on europe (portugal), and with the stock rom.
I can watch movies on prime, listen to music, buy books, install apps (free on amazon store and sideloaded the other ones).
So i will keep stock room, cause i can do everything.

Same here from germany, it works fine!
well am also in India and just ordered mine. will get it in 10 days. I already have amazon account with fake US address and some 200 apps collected by me. Also I plan to root it and use some other launcher and maybe install cm7 too. I have no intention of watching videos on Amazon prime and only want to use to read a few ebooks, play games and movie which I can load on the storage. At the price and for the quality it serves this purpose great in my opinion. Depending on your needs this might vary.
you can do that with the stock room.
i mean, install apps (the free ones at amazon app store) or install from unknown sources. or sideload them.
kindle fire outside us
I am living in germany. Yes, small money for a great tablet once its rooted and you side loaded whatever you are interested it. Without routing it, its a crippled and restricted amazon content using device only.
But rooting it its really easy, if you are able to read and understand a little bit.
I now can watch movies, listen music, read colored ebooks or any pdf file and play games like nova2 or other stuff. the tablet runs smooth and imho its the best bang for the buck available on the market.
I am not interested in amazon content a lot, but i can buy books or videos there if i really want to or use the amazon services while being temporarily "unrooted".
I didnt made it possible to view streamed videos and using the cloud, but to be honest, i dont like the idea to put personal data on a public server or show people what i like to read and view, i am happy to be private. I am using my pc as a streaming server or just download some videos into the storage every now and then. Its good enough for 5-6 videos plus a ****load of books and music.
But look around.. there is so much other content availabe on the internet, you will not get bored in 10 years, so who really needs amazon?
I really prefer to sideload anything via wifi or usb cable which works great and isnt that difficult. I have a lot of fun and for sure I saved a lot of money not buying an expensive high end tablet.
The kindle fire just dont have gps, vibrator, camera, microfon and bluetooth. If you really want that dont buy the kindle fire.
I personally have a small mobile phone just for that so i dont need to use a tablet as a phone and i also have a highend digital camera so wtf why i need a camera on my tablet ? (google for wifi tethering, works great). They are not good anyway even on the most expensive tablets on the market compared to a real one.
But i am pretty sure someone will find a solution for that somehow.
I have it and I love it. I live in Bosnia and have no problems with it. Great little thing for a good price.

But it isnt possible sideload without root?
I cant still play all the movies, music, etc i want with a unrooted kindle fire. And i really enjoy the curated amazon app store. If i need any other app i just download it on fire and install. or sideload.
So if i just want to play movies, listen music, read books watch docs, why i need to root my kindle?
@therethere. You do not need root to sideload. I upload my apks to dropbox and then download to Kindle. The only reason I might decide to root is to change lockscreen and perhaps use a different launcher.
I'd really love a thread in this forum with everything you need to know to run your Kindle Fire outside US without rooting

Not necessary to root.
Use a usb cable to sideload android apps. Most apps work.
Usa account and credit card(sample) for free Amazon apps.
Vpn for streaming.
Go launcher makes Fire a "real"Android.
I couldn't be happier with mine. In barely a month since release, it's now overclockable, CM7 running near perfectly, and a touch recovery coming tonight.
Since I got mine at release, my grandparents are buying three as gifts, my Dad might get one and I'm getting one for my Mom for Christmas.
Kindle Fire is easily one of the best value tablets out there. It's freakin awesome.
it shouldn't matter if your in India or anywhere. get one.

There aren't really a lot of steps:
-Just enable install from unknown sources in the Kindle settings
-Install a file manager from the browser: search for and download the .apk of any known android file manager
-Copy the desired apps via USB
-Install via file manager
What you can do with the Kindle outside the USA without rooting is:
-Browse the web
-Buy and read Kindle books
-Copy via USB and read documents (.DOC and PDF)
-Everything else that allows the apps installed by yourself
I just love my kindle(/s), even I'm not able to use unblock-us properly to see Prime videos.
I don't care about gps, camera or 3g (even with it, I'd never make another contract, tethering is enough for me). All things I already have on the phone.
I just miss bluetooth, because I'd like to use a keyboard with this device and that's the only way to plug one, so far.
- Reading pdf (for simple books I usually use the other kindle);
- Newspapers;
- RSS, web browsing;
- Listen some music, radio or watching some TVs when I'm cooking, shaving or taking a shower;
- And yes, play some games sometimes (Tetris is freaking me out );
All stuff I was already able to do with the phone, but way more enjoyable on a tablet, without concern about battery life, on a big and beautiful screen, and better speakers.
And finally, I love the fact I don't need to carry it in a bag or a nerdy cover. Just my freaking pocket.
Hey everyone,
So I'm taking online classes for web design and new media, and it deals a lot with online reading, video watching and I have to do my assignments on my Macbook pro.
I was thinking of getting a tablet that will allow me to read my text books easier and watch my instructor videos while I work on my laptop. I know it only has 8GB's of storage, but I would only load in one week's worth of video at at time that can equal up to about 100+MB total (or use my Mac as a media server and just stream it).
I don't think a 10" tablet is the way to go for me, because I want something a bit more portable and obviously low cost with a quality build. So I came across the Fire and did my research, I feel like I'm sold on it and I come here to get your opinions on it too.
I've had an iPad before, it's cool, heavy and large.
How's the email experience?
Does the browser support flash and how is the browsing experience?
Can I download the Dolphin Browser on this? Or is the default browser better then Dolphin?
I appreciate your thoughts and opinions.
From what you describe, the Fire should be a good fit for your requirements. It supports flash, the native email app is adequate,
And it will run Dolphin browser.
Sent from my Kindle Fire using Tapatalk
The dolphin browser doesn't show up on the stock market. I bought the Kindle because I can mess around with flashing custom ROMs. If that's not your thing I'd suggest looking at the Blackberry Playbook. More storage and better stock experience I believe. There is supposed to be an update this month to add an email client. Not sure if there's a different one in their market.
Well I got the KF not too long ago (maybe 2 weeks) but I think its a solid device. Email is fine on it, but i'm sure if you don't like it, you could side load others. The device has flash in the browser and you can side load just about any browser as long as you have the APK. The default is okay. I prefer either dolphin or opera though.
Well the devices specs say it has 8GBs but you will only be about to use about 5. It sets different storage for different things. 1gb for applications 5gbs for sd storage. You can put your media on the amazon cloud though and stream it.
You could go for the New Nook. I believe it has 16 Gigs internal with an SD card slot. as well as a gig of RAM. I'm not too sure on its stock performance, but there's a forum for it on this site, so i'm sure it can be rooted.
In my personal experiences with the KF, I have had no problem with it and I really love the screen. The glare can be a downside, but if you plan on using services from amazon go ahead and get it. If not, you could always root+recov and run cm7.

Thank you all for your comments! And yes, I do have an amazon credit account and regular account, so that's definitely something to add to the pro's. What the Amazon app store doesn't have I get at 1Mobile Market and getjar. 1Mobile seems to get the updates more regulary then getJar though. They have Dolphin HD which works better then stock IMO, along with drop box, and box. Which is 5gb free each with those. Box had a free 50gb promo awhile back which i was able to get in on. Not sure if they are still doing it though. I run stock and they all loaded easily through the 1Mobile app. I also got the facebook and twitter apps from there as well and have no complaints so far.

I'd like to know why people are moaning about there being "only" 10.7GB available space on the 16GB model. Samsung are one of only a few companies to still give us MicroSD card slots to expand memory. We can put ALL our music, ALL our videos, ALL our photos and SOME of our apps onto MicroSD so stop complaining! There's not many manufacturers that let you do that these days.

dude no permission to install on ext-card since android4.0 ICS (it s not for KK)
and it has ~10GB.
on demo units thr was something about unpacked 5 and mwc and ... so first of all we saw report about 8GB internal by mistake
then new reports shows it has 10GB
source
Yeah those demo units were set up for the event so had less available space. The retail units will have 10GB+.
As for permissions, the S4 on 4.3 allows app to sd. I assume it will be the same for 4.4 on the S4 otherwise all the links will become broken. Samsung implement the feature since Google stopped doing so.
I have a Mega 6.3 on 4.2.2 and that has app to sd.
Sent from my GT-I9205 using xda app-developers app
I believe the developer has to code there app specifically to allow for the APP Data to be moved to the SD Card, the actual APP has to stay on internal memory. At least thats how I understand it is supposed to work.
The main thing is that pictures/videos/music can go on the SD card as in reality that is what takes up the majority of the space on my device. The rest of the internal memory can be used for games and apps, 10gb is enough for 3-4 of those large games like San Andreas. If you need to keep more than 3-4 of those games on your device at a time, you should invest in the 32gb model or invest in a 32GB Nexus 7.
Sent from my SGH-I337M using Tapatalk
Kitkat uses memory/storage differently.10gb is plenty if you dont play any good games.
A lot of the best games are 1-3gb in size, and moving the app and game data to the micro sd card may not be possible with this version of kitkat? need clarification is this can be done, although not all games use the memory card.
If the 32gb model is readily available then this is the way to go.
Good Luck with that! Until we see a retail version NO ONE knows what a retail version will have available space wise. The fact that you SAW 8.56gb AVAILABLE at MWC means that is what you should expect. Especially with Samsung, they aren't known for removing stuff, but for adding stuff.
That's why the Note 3 is still the way to go. 3gb ram and 32gb is the smallest configuration.
OK I've Googled it and actually seen what Google are up to That is really bad. They want to get rid of external storage because "people are confused with it". How thick are some people?? If they're confused, don't use it. I love having the choice of using something or not using something. Google gets more and more like Apple each day, forcing things on people.
There is no way I'm updating my Mega 6.3 to KitKat as I have lots of apps on the SD card at the minute.
We'll be able to still store videos, music and photos on the SD card presumably? Will photos and videos taken with a phone running KitKat be able to save them directly to SD card, or will we be forced to use "The Cloud"?

Good Luck with that! Until we see a retail version NO ONE knows what a retail version will have available space wise. The fact that you SAW 8.56gb AVAILABLE at MWC means that is what you should expect. Especially with Samsung, they aren't known for removing stuff, but for adding stuff.
That's why the Note 3 is still the way to go. 3gb ram and 32gb is the smallest configuration.

The MWC unit showed only 8.56 GB because some demo videos, apps, etc has been stored in the internal memory for demo purposes and occupied about 2.33 GB of internal space. Out of the box you will get 10.7 GB in the retail version and the MWC device also had the same.

It literally had a MWC 2014 folder with 2GB of data lol. Check Sammobile.
