[Q] Google Now Hotword Detection Not Working - RESOLVED - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

It used to be that when I opened Google Now, the search bar would say "Say 'Google' to Search". But now that option has gone away. I checked my settings and hotword detection is on, so it should be working. I have tried just saying "google" but that didn't work. I tried reverting back to an older verion of the google searchapp, but that didn't solve the problem. I'm running CM10.1 Jan 25 Nightly. It was working a week ago when I was still running CM10.1, so it may just be that something about the newer versions of CM10.1 aren't working. I've tried reinstalling the app from the play store, but that didn't fix it either, and I'm out of ideas.

Yes, if I press the mic button, it picks up everything I say just fine.

What was done to fix this? I am having the same issue.

The issue for me was using the voice notify app. I contacted the developer and this is what I got
"I was able to reproduce the issue and have narrowed
it down to the Accessibility feedback type for VN being set to 'spoken'. With
that, it's kind of obvious that Google Now is designed not to listen for
"Google" when an accessibility service might be speaking.
I tried to work around it by setting the feedback type to generic and only
setting it to spoken while VN speaks, but it prevented VN from speaking at all.
That said, I don't believe there is anything I can do. Probably for the best
since it's usually not a good idea to circumvent design."
So if you're not using voice notify, i'm guessing it's some other accessibility app that's screwing it up. It's very annoying.

I think the hotword also only works if your language is set to English (US). My phone is set to English (UK) and "Google" doesn't work.

on my Nexus 7 the hotword detection has never worked and I cannot figure it out.

Not working for me currently, not sure why.

Set the language to english US. After setting this, for me it's working

I already have that setting.

Not using CM right this second, but I had this problem today. One of the keyboard/input options was "Google voice typing". When I turned that OFF, Hotword detection started working again. Just an idea.

I'm on 4.2.2 CM10.1 on S2 (i9100).
It worked like a charm, but few days back I've noticed, that despite the fact that I have the feature turned on, I am using US English, my voice recognition works perfect, it doesn't work.

Android settings

Re-check it.

I had this issue as well.
In order to make it work again:
1. Turn on Google voice typing in the keyboard setting
2. go to Google Now setting and then Voice
3. Set the language to English... and choose english (US)
You should be getting hotword recognition now.

I had this same issue and this is what I did to fix it:
In Google Now go to
Settings>Voice>Download offline speech recognition>under ALL tab select English (US)
Enjoy your Hotword detection once again! :good:

No problem. Now tell Google to do a barrel roll.

I've tried everything that's mentioned in this thread but Google Now still doesn't work by saying 'Google' I have to keep pressing the mic. Any other solution?

How-To: Fix No Pics and Fix Voice Reply on Google Now

Google Now: NO Voice reply or Picture showing up work around.
This is for anyone who cannot get a voice to reply for anything in Google Now (that includes weather), and also for people who cant get a picture for Google Now cards. The reason for why voice does not work is because the languages are mixed in settings. I used to have Google Now as English Canada, but voice as English US. Unfortunately, I cannot use English Canada, so I had to set them all to English US.
This is how I did it:
1. Go into System settings > Language and Input
2. Make sure Language is set to English (US)
3. Make sure Google voice typing is checked and set to Automatic
4. Click on Voice Search underneath SPEECH. Make sure Language is set to English (US) and Speech Output is set to always speak
5. Go into Text-to-speech output. Click on the Google Text-to.. settings icon. Language should be set to English US.
6. Test voice by going into Google Now and asking it the weather. It should reply! Note: For weather, the voice always replies, which is why you should test weather.
7. Click Thanks if this helped
Picture not showing up for cards: This is pretty easy.
1. Go into Google Now
2. Click on Settings>Privacy and Accounts> and check off "Search on google.com"
3. Test it by asking a question that has a picture. For example: "How tall is Kobe Bryant?" The picture should now show up.
4. Click Thanks if this helped
Any questions, just Private Message me. ^.^ or post in the thread.
PS. This workaround worked for me, on CM10 v8 Alpha Preview by FE with the Gapps from OP and Devil 1.0.4 Test3 JB kernel. Also, for pictures, one other user reported that he did not get the "search on google.com" option. Please test it out and tell me if it works, THANK YOU! Also, click thanks if I helped ;D
Feedback please? Does it work? Yes, no? Click "Thanks" if it helped?
tested it, still no pic shown
Thats strange. It works 100% for me on any ROM. If I go into Google Now > Settings > Privacy and accounts > Check "Search on google.com" (bottom blurb says "Using www.google.com instead of your local domain (www.google.ca), the picture shows up perfectly. If I uncheck that, no picture shows up. Im sorry if im unable to help, but thats how I managed to get it working. I really dont know why its not working for you, sorry. :/
Mine doesn't have the option to search Google etc in privacy, however I am able to get pics.
Followed steps and speak back feature works great!

Mostly with voice recognition. But thank you for the contribution!
bro, its working now, finally figured it out where those stuff is located, its working like charm now, but without cards.
I think you may need to use them a bit more. I always get cards. And I think it also depends what you ask it Weather should always have a card. (99% sure)

Hmm, I know this sounds stupid, but is your volume at max? It didnt work for me once because my volume was down lol. Major fail on my part.
Also, could you tell me your settings on Voice in Google Now settings?
It should be Language: Default - English(US), Speech Output: Always Speak. (The other two are block offensive words and Hotword detection which are both checked, but they shouldnt make a difference either way)
Other settings to be aware of are:
-Make sure profiles is off (some profiles might have silent activated)
-Settings>Language and Input>Language, English (US)
Unfortunately, Im not on the same rom as you are right now, (Im on RemICS - JB) so we have some different settings in the Language and Input part, but I'll make a backup and flash PA 360 and try to make google now voice stop working to see what settings are stopping yours. I apologize for this thread of not being much help to you. If you manage to get it working before I can find which settings are messing it up, then kudos to you, and please share your new findings so I can update the thread. Really, I dont know why half the community has it working and the other half doesnt.

Google voice broke after root?

Hey all
just got a Google nexus 7 UK and have really enjoyed using it. I have been using Google voice quite a bit but decided to unlock and root it the other day. After reinstalling Swype Google voice no longer responds when I say "Google",I have to push the Mic icon.
I'm not sure wether it was Swype that caused this, the unlock our root,I did search for a solution but found nothing. Google voice is still selected as an input method on keyboards/input as well as Swype.
I have uninstalled Swype reinstalled It. Had voice as my only input ran out of ideas.currently on 4.1.1. Didn't know where to place this thread as I'm not sure where the fault lies
Thanks in advance

Touchless Control on the Moto G.

Here's a new feature on the Moto G, which works like Touchless control. Google added this on all Android devices.
How to activate:
1) Open the Google Now app
2) Tap the mic. and say "Okay Google everywhere"
3) Now go to the menu button (3 dots at the bottom) and tap it.
4) Go to "Voice"
5) You'll see "Okay Google Detection".
6) Check the first 2
7) Done!
Now, on any screen, say "Ok Google". It also works when screen is off, but only while charging.
Yeah it's not actually as useful as you might think and your a little late to the party.

Thank you OP! Some of us are new to Android and appreciate the tip
Another tip for enabling this feature: (**Root Required**)
Firstly install UnleashTheGoogle.apk.
Once installed, grant it root permissions, and kill the Google Search app in the settings (Force close). Then you should see some options in the Google Now settings. The IDs to change in the "Config Flags" menu are 199 and 202. Change them to ON. Also, check that the 223 is ON too.

hi,
ok it seems its some bug ?
This is wat i did,
on device.. settings/accessibilities /Services... turn off all "Services apps that is enabled.
eg. i had under Services.. Pushbullet, Greenify, Enhanced Sms. & Caller id etc. etc enabled. I had to turn them all off. Working 100%
Good luck
I found that the settings of text-to-speech options affects the talking calculator.
I just changed the language from English to any other language, then the calculator spoke the other language.
So, if the text-to-speech is turned off, the calculator will be quite. But no idea how to turn this off...

hi,
it is logical that if caculator "speaks" numbers etc. it is using a text to speech voice option. eg On my device Note 4 or my Note 3 or other, i have Samsung voice, Google voice or SVOX installed. If i disable it a lot of my apps won't work. This is not what is causing problem. (If you search around xda threads you will find thread where this solution was posted, unfortunately i did not save link at time) Try option in my post above and you will most likely see it works, but you have to turn off all apps listed in services.( The text to voice is mere a tool)
good luck

I had made a thread regarding this and people from here has no idea about the solution for this problem.
i went to the settings, manage apps, all and deleted google text to speech and disabale samsung text to speech.
thats the time it will stop working. BUT, once you close all your recent used apps the voice message will go back again! WTF!
after how many centuries of searching for a solution, finally!!!! the horrible voice is gone when pressing the

Voice recognition issue

Hi,
Voice recognition is not working any more on my OP5. For instance, if I want to speech an SMS text, I press the mike icon, the google speech box appears , but the sound is not registered. Same issue with google Assistant : "OK GOOGLE" not working any more and if I press the micro icon, a dot line appears but no result.
I checked the microphone by registring a file : it's working properly.
I have already tried an hard reset : no success.
My OP5 is not rooted and I am using the official ROM.
Thanks for your help

Thanks for your answer. Google was correctly settled as assist app. Still not working.
I mean if you're stock, completely wiped everything, and it still doesn't work, but Mic still records... that's weird. I assume other apps like Cortana work fine?

Hi,
I fully wiped the phone. I tried with a brand new email adress. No joy !
And cortana works fine
I downloaded the update (oxygen 4.5.13 android 7.1.1). Still no joy
When I go to activities log on my google account, I can find empty audio files for each time I tried a voice recognition (search mike icon)
You are right : it's weird !!!
Update Google app, then go check through all settings to be sure everything is switched on that you need. Will also need to retrain "ok Google". I had the same problem as you, and some other voice and typing issues.

Hi,
I noticed two interesting points :
. Every time I try to use Google voice recognition in an application (SMS for example), there is a short notice telling that the audio file will be registered in my google account
. When I check my activities on line in my google account, I can find short file of few seconds (with no voice) every time related to my voice recognition trials.

What sms app are you using? I have seen some sms apps show that notice, but the one I'm using right now doesn't ever show me that and it works fine.
I'm thinking you may have an issue with the sms app and/or the virtual keyboard app you're using. You may want to try another sms app and different keyboard, and check all the settings in those when you do. If it doesn't help you can always switch those apps back..

Thanks for your answer. In fact, same issue with the search app. The dot line remain still...and there is a recorded file in Google activities. I tried with différent keyboards (Google and SwiftKey). Same issue.
Well. Tonight I managed to use voice recognition with a jack headset (OK google or Google search).
So I think the issue is with the internal microphone impossible to trigger.

Is it under warranty? Hopefully you can get it swapped out. Good Luck

I just thought of something, before you try to send phone back. Take your phone out of case and turn it off. Take a can of compressed air and use the straw it comes with. Spray it in short bursts. Use it in the mic port and any other ports too. You might have gotten dust or lint in there. Then turn your phone back on and try speech recognition without the headphone plugged into the jack.

Thx, I will try. I experienced another way with Bluetooth headset. Impossible to trigger "ok google" with my voice. But after a manual trigger by pressing the icon, I can speak and voice recognition is ok.
So, to resume regarding "ok google" and general Google voice recognition :
. Internal mike : failure
. Wired headset : ok
. Bluetooth headset : no trigger, but voice recognised after.
And remember the microphone is ok for other purposes (phone, cortana, vocal message registering,...)
Seems to be a soft problem
I have the same issue. Google voice services won't register any sound. Is there any fix?
