Google voice broke after root? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey all
just got a Google nexus 7 UK and have really enjoyed using it. I have been using Google voice quite a bit but decided to unlock and root it the other day. After reinstalling Swype Google voice no longer responds when I say "Google",I have to push the Mic icon.
I'm not sure wether it was Swype that caused this, the unlock our root,I did search for a solution but found nothing. Google voice is still selected as an input method on keyboards/input as well as Swype.
I have uninstalled Swype reinstalled It. Had voice as my only input ran out of ideas.currently on 4.1.1. Didn't know where to place this thread as I'm not sure where the fault lies
Thanks in advance

Hmm got it working. It was because it was in English UK rather than English US
Thanks and sorry for time wasting

Problems with Google Now since 4.1.2 Update.

As the title states I have been having problems with Google now since the update to 4.1.2. I'm am running unrooted life stock Jelly Bean and the issue I am having seems to be Google now hanging up while attempting to answer a question. The questions that start with a "Who is" seems to cause it the most trouble. Once I ask the question it will ding to show it accepted the question but then it will just spin looking for an answers without ever answering the question. This issue could also likely be attributed to the October 29 voice search update Google pushed through the place store.
I never had this issue until I upgraded, so I am asking the community of experts here.
Have you encountered this issue?
If you have how did you fix it?
Than you guys for reading and sorry for the post length.

Hey, I'm having the same problem - I have also tried reverting the app back, reinstalling the update, factory wipe of the nexus 7 and wiped cache etc. No luck here I HAVE found that if you ask (by voice) something like "how tall was Napoleon Bonaparte" it works perfectly and very quickly. Also, while web search does not work 99 percent of the time (I find it does after a reboot for one go then stops working) image search through Google search works perfectly.
This only happens with Google search, not chrome.
Let me know if you find a solution.

I am having the same issue. First search works stops working after that.
When did it start for each of you? I may not have noticed it as I haven't used Google search much lately....

It seems the microphone isn't working for me at all most of the time unless I reboot. I'm on stock rooted. Its definitely hosed up.
Go here and add your bug reports or logs: http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=39172&thanks=39172&ts=1351764881
Having search problems here also.
Basically, hasn't worked for me since day 1 after purchasing the 32GB version this past Tuesday & installing 4.1.2 JB.
Same symptoms - whether type or voice search using the search box at top of the screens: hangs on web search & other search with link tabs at bottom giving no results.
Image searches do produce results though...odd.
Changing search options to Google.com from Google.co.UK fixed it for me.

Can you explain how?
Yes, changin search option to google.com solved the problem for me.
This could be done in main settings-google (accounts)-search option...
I've got the same problem. Makes no difference if I am on Google UK or Google. Com. Bah.

Sorry, I don't seem to have that option in Settings > Accounts > Google > Search. Could you be more clear on the steps to get to the option you refer to?
There it is at settings>google>search>search on google.com... check this option.
It is also at Google app settings in Privacy & accounts
Im on stock 4.1.2
Looks like they are aware of it: per Kousha N.

I just did it, and for some strange reason it WORKS...i've done at least 5 searches, vague ones, and it searched the web. THANKS!!!
EDIT: But NOW, it won't do the voiceback like "What is 3 times 3" it should come back with "The answer is 9" now it just does a web search...
EDIT2: Ok I rebooted device after checking and UNCHECKING the option, and it works TOTALLY now. I am a happy camper ^_^
Thanks guys for all the responses, I am glad I am not alone in this. It seems like it's getting better but the voice search is still not performing the way it used to. If I try to search for info on say Micheal Jordan, it doesnt read back his information like it used to. I don't get the card anymore either I just get the google search. I hope they find a fix for this soon.

[Q] Google Now Hotword Detection Not Working - RESOLVED

It used to be that when I opened Google Now, the search bar would say "Say 'Google' to Search". But now that option has gone away. I checked my settings and hotword detection is on, so it should be working. I have tried just saying "google" but that didn't work. I tried reverting back to an older verion of the google searchapp, but that didn't solve the problem. I'm running CM10.1 Jan 25 Nightly. It was working a week ago when I was still running CM10.1, so it may just be that something about the newer versions of CM10.1 aren't working. I've tried reinstalling the app from the play store, but that didn't fix it either, and I'm out of ideas.

The issue for me was using the voice notify app. I contacted the developer and this is what I got
"I was able to reproduce the issue and have narrowed
it down to the Accessibility feedback type for VN being set to 'spoken'. With
that, it's kind of obvious that Google Now is designed not to listen for
"Google" when an accessibility service might be speaking.
I tried to work around it by setting the feedback type to generic and only
setting it to spoken while VN speaks, but it prevented VN from speaking at all.
That said, I don't believe there is anything I can do. Probably for the best
since it's usually not a good idea to circumvent design."
So if you're not using voice notify, i'm guessing it's some other accessibility app that's screwing it up. It's very annoying.
I think the hotword also only works if your language is set to English (US). My phone is set to English (UK) and "Google" doesn't work.
on my Nexus 7 the hotword detection has never worked and I cannot figure it out.
Not working for me currently, not sure why.

I already have that setting.
Not using CM right this second, but I had this problem today. One of the keyboard/input options was "Google voice typing". When I turned that OFF, Hotword detection started working again. Just an idea.
I'm on 4.2.2 CM10.1 on S2 (i9100).
It worked like a charm, but few days back I've noticed, that despite the fact that I have the feature turned on, I am using US English, my voice recognition works perfect, it doesn't work.

I had this issue as well.
In order to make it work again:
1. Turn on Google voice typing in the keyboard setting
2. go to Google Now setting and then Voice
3. Set the language to English... and choose english (US)
You should be getting hotword recognition now.
I had this same issue and this is what I did to fix it:
In Google Now go to
Settings>Voice>Download offline speech recognition>under ALL tab select English (US)
Enjoy your Hotword detection once again! :good:

I've tried everything that's mentioned in this thread but Google Now still doesn't work by saying 'Google' I have to keep pressing the mic. Any other solution?

Touchless controls stopped talking back

As the title says, when I do a search using ok google now, I no longer get voice results back.
Asking what time is it or do I need an umbrella only returns text search results.
Any idea?
My phone is completely stock, the only thing I have done is unlocked the bootloader.

That's the default settings, it only replies when speech is appropriate I.e. reading emails, text messages but I do remember seeing the settings somewhere that gives you the ability of changing this. I don't use touchless control, actually i removed it completely

Try this:
Go into Google Now.
Tap the 3 dot menu and tap settings.
Find the Voice Section and go into that
Make sure your language is English(US) (Not sure if others work, I haven't tried)
Make sure speech output is set to always on

I have tried that, I even downloaded the offline voice recognition.
I've reset/uninstalled updates on google play services and google search, didn't work.
Just did a factory reset and still not working. I'm not sure what it is. I'm going to have to call Motorola, all I did was unlock the bootloader but I didn't root or do anything extra to it.
@flashallthetime I am using appropriate questions. If you ask the time it should say the time out loud, and if you ask if you need an umbrella it should tell you the weather. As of now it googles "need an umbrella" and displays results.
EDIT: AAAAAaaaaaaaaaand of course it is now just magically working. Thanks everyone for your help. It didn't work after the factory reset and now it just magically does...

Sounds like it didn't know your location, it doesn't like to answer any weather, location or time based questions if it doesn't know where you are.

hi,
ok it seems its some bug ?
This is wat i did,
on device.. settings/accessibilities /Services... turn off all "Services apps that is enabled.
eg. i had under Services.. Pushbullet, Greenify, Enhanced Sms. & Caller id etc. etc enabled. I had to turn them all off. Working 100%
Good luck
I found that the settings of text-to-speech options affects the talking calculator.
I just changed the language from English to any other language, then the calculator spoke the other language.
So, if the text-to-speech is turned off, the calculator will be quite. But no idea how to turn this off...

hi,
it is logical that if caculator "speaks" numbers etc. it is using a text to speech voice option. eg On my device Note 4 or my Note 3 or other, i have Samsung voice, Google voice or SVOX installed. If i disable it a lot of my apps won't work. This is not what is causing problem. (If you search around xda threads you will find thread where this solution was posted, unfortunately i did not save link at time) Try option in my post above and you will most likely see it works, but you have to turn off all apps listed in services.( The text to voice is mere a tool)
good luck

I have this as well
It is so stupid I will have to try these fixes later
Unfortunately I cannot disable everything in the services menu as I have a pebble watch and it needs it.
I guess I'll have to get a different calculator app.

OMG
i've been crazy lurking around for the possible solution of this stupid voice text on my calculator as well.
I had made a thread regarding this and people from here has no idea about the solution for this problem.
i went to the settings, manage apps, all and deleted google text to speech and disabale samsung text to speech.
thats the time it will stop working. BUT, once you close all your recent used apps the voice message will go back again! WTF!
after how many centuries of searching for a solution, finally!!!! the horrible voice is gone when pressing the
stock calculator. downloaded dodol launcher and used it for 3 days and uninstalled it!
voila!

Hello...
Maybe I have a workaround. Go in Google play. Since your Google app updated itself, you have auto update apps in settings... Open Google app in "my apps and games" , click on the 3 dot menu on the top right corner and deselect "auto update" (see screenshot attached)
After that, you can go in: settings > apps > Google app >
Here you can tap on disable. Click "disable app" and on the second prompt "ok". It will reinitialize the app to the factory version.
Finally, you can go on https://apkmirror.com : http://www.apkmirror.com/?post_type=app_release&searchtype=apk&s=Google+app
And download an older Google app version of your choice. You need to enable "unknown source" in settings > security to be able to install it... :good:
Good luck...
