As the title says, when I do a search using ok google now, I no longer get voice results back.
Asking what time is it or do I need an umbrella only returns text search results.
Any idea?
My phone is completely stock, the only thing I have done is unlocked the bootloader.

Isn't there a setting for touchless control that sets when you want a voice reply
Sent on my Moto X
If there is, I don't know.
I unlocked my dev ed on Monday and it did a factory wipe. I just tried touchless controls for the first time since then and I'm not getting any voice responses.

That's the default settings, it only replies when speech is appropriate I.e. reading emails, text messages but I do remember seeing the settings somewhere that gives you the ability of changing this. I don't use touchless control, actually i removed it completely

Try this:
Go into Google Now.
Tap the 3 dot menu and tap settings.
Find the Voice Section and go into that
Make sure your language is English(US) (Not sure if others work, I haven't tried)
Make sure speech output is set to always on

I have tried that, I even downloaded the offline voice recognition.
I've reset/uninstalled updates on google play services and google search, didn't work.
Just did a factory reset and still not working. I'm not sure what it is. I'm going to have to call Motorola, all I did was unlock the bootloader but I didn't root or do anything extra to it.
@flashallthetime I am using appropriate questions. If you ask the time it should say the time out loud, and if you ask if you need an umbrella it should tell you the weather. As of now it googles "need an umbrella" and displays results.
EDIT: AAAAAaaaaaaaaaand of course it is now just magically working. Thanks everyone for your help. It didn't work after the factory reset and now it just magically does...

Sounds like it didn't know your location, it doesn't like to answer any weather, location or time based questions if it doesn't know where you are.

I know this has been discussed with other devices, but as far as I can see, no one yet has brought this for the S4, I can't tell you if it worked before I de-bloated it on Monday, but now that I needed the S Voice it opens but once you give the command it gives the sound that says that it gets the command, but then the Screen goes black for up to 10 seconds and then it pops up the error saying that S Voice stopped working.
Like I said I never used it before, so I don't really know if after the command I give it suppose to say something back to me confirming it and then does the magic, so I have doubts if what is really failing is S Voice or the Speech App, I already cleared all data and cache for S Voice, Google Text To Speech and Samsung Text to Speech, but nothing works.
Anybody with the same issue or know how to fix this? Thanks.

I had the same exact issue... Possibly because you removed ChatOn and ChatOnV.... Its required in one of the voice command menus which probably blew it up.
Only way is to download Kies and do a Kies restore. Thats how I got it back working.
Lag Reduction Guide in General section will tell you how its done.
Thanks for the info, I was guessing that Chat on was the issue... however, for me reset to factory is not an option as of now, I really don't use the S Voice, I was just testing it, and if in order to get this back to work, I need to reset and set again all my apps and settings in general, I better not do it. I even prefer just to uninstall S Voice for now until I'm force to do a reset.
Thanks anyway.
Truthfully, for my restore and initialization through keys, my apps were still there after I restored.
Not sure if this will be your case but you can try it.
Thanks, after reading your experience I got the courage to do it myself and for my surprise, there were all my apps and settings, and there I have S Voice back. Thanks a lot.
I just read a news article saying that the new Google search update is supposed to allow us to use the "ok Google" hotword from any screen, including the lock screen. I downloaded the apk, but can't get it to do anything different on my Verizon s5. Has anyone else gotten this to work? Does it require the phones to not be rooted, maybe?
It doesn't work for us yet. I did all the steps as well but unless it is pushed for your device it's a no go
I thought it was supposed to work with all phones. Too bad, I would have liked the lock screen functionality.
According to AP, it's being rolled out by account. So we wait.
http://www.androidpolice.com/2014/06/25/apk-download-google-search-v3-5-14-brings-ok-google-hotword-detection-to-any-screen/
I guess I missed that part. Why offer a download link to the new apk if none of the new features will work anyway?

They may have only realized that after the article was written and the .apk was offered. There may be other subtle things that have been improved, speed for example. I think one of the comments mention that the acknowledgement "ding" is different.

Other things do seem to be subtle and to work, just not the 'OK,Google' detection from any screen. When you go in to set it up, you have to say that phrase three times so it recognizes your voice. However, it never registers so you have to back out of that screen.
Any update on this? I just received the Google search update and it doesn't allow the ok Google voice command on any the screens. I still have to open the app to use the voice setting

I got it today too. This always happens to me, I download an .apk from Android Police and usually a short time later Google Play will tell me I have an update for the same version number. So, my thought is that nothing has really changed and we are still waiting for Google as they roll the function out by account as mentioned in the article.
Thanks for the reply. Bummer
I don't know if I was late seeing this, but the search from any screen feature is available in my Google search settings now.
No root, no need to download or install anything.
This work for other devices as well as the Note 4. This enables the Google now "Ok Google" Feature where you can active Google now while the screen is off. This is something like the Moto X feature.
How To:
1) Open Google Now
2) Go to Google Now Settings
3) Click on "Voice"
4) Enable "Audio History"
5) Click "Ok Google Detection"
6)Click "Always on" and follow the remaining directions.
You Can also watch this How To Video if you want:
If you device is unsupported or it just wont work, then there is an app called "Open Mic+ for Google Now" which does this for you.
This also works on the Lg G3, Nexus 5, and Galaxy S5, from what I know. Please feel free to try other devices and let me know if they work as well.
Mod Edit: closed as a duplicate.

works with text and calling. You have to allow Google to store and access your contacts in order to do it.
Does anyone have any idea as to whether or not you'll be able to change the trigger words to something else? "Okay, google" feels kind of clumsy haha.

anyone try s-voice with the screen off? or am i one of the only ones that still likes s-voice? on the note 3 it was beautiful, before google's screen off voice recognition came about. on the s4 it's worthless. hoping they might revamp it, but hey, who knows.

closest i could get was a hot british chick. but i'm sure that with root we could probably load the voice synthesis data in place of the stock one. (for the hot british chick, open google now, go to settings, then voice, then choose the different version of english.)
Seems like a cool feature that I'll probably try.. but does anyone else feel creeped out by Google listening to you all the time?

Yes I do find it creepy. I also found that Google Now doesn't search what I want, maybe that's just me.
It seems I get best results by simple opening Google search and entering one or two words on my topic of interest.
I also do not like that Now is trying to decide what I like or what I would think relevant. Again that's just me.
I turned it off completely. Each to his own!

For some reason, I can't get it to recognize anything except "ok google". Tried ok jarvis, and many others. Any trick to getting a different command to work?
I've never really figured out if people think that actual people are "listening" to what we say or "reading" our texts and email.
Nobody is. It's all code. . It's not stored and read by others later, it's not information used by human beings. It's simply information used as variables for function calls in the code. The audio the mic picks up is fed into a stack of information blocks in a first in last out method. Each sample in the stack is analyzed, not by words spoken but by the signal analysis of the detected noises. All of the noises are converted to a spectrum via Fourier analysis and then any pattern that matches the expected pattern will trigger the interrupt condition needed to turn the phone on. "Okay jarvis" has a frequency domain spectrum very similar to "okay google", thats why it works too. Any noise the mic picks up that does not match the expected pattern of noises are simply lost.
A similar process is used for email and text parsing. I know this stuff can seem scary and dubious but it's really just basic computing. Everything is converted to 1s and 0s. It's easy to let our imaginations run wild when we don't understand how something works. Imagine turning on a lighter or using a flashlight a few thousand years ago. Those things would be magical, and most likely destroyed on the spot along with the "demon" that had them.

I have moto voice enabled and it works wonderfully as long as the phone is unlocked, but if I check the Google commands over lock screen button, things don't work properly.
If I ask it to check the weather or something like that, it works fine, but if I ask it to make a reminder, it will go through all the steps then when I tell it to save and it will confirm that it's saving... But it never actually saves the reminder. If i actually click the save button it will then save it, but that defeats the whole purpose of it being hands free. This is on stock Feb. security update. It's always done this. Anybody else have this problem or know how to fix it? Moto voice is enabled in accessibility if that matters.

Have had this issue for some time now, really irritating. I encounter this most occasions when attempting to set a timer and alarm.
Another issue I keep getting is that when the device is locked, the first command will be be carried out, but a 2nd command will return a failed sound - as if the command was not recognized, even though it was. I then have to unlock the device to continue making commands.
Anyone else had this issue?

I have Moto Voice on and OK Google off.
Moto Voice still works for all the listed commands "call X", "post to Facebok", "play on Youtube", "take a photo", "take a selfie". (both with screen on and off)
However it seems that Google commands have stopped working. I used to say "create event" and then I could dictate a calendar event, "set an alarm", "navigate me/drive to..."
All these commands seem they are not working anymore. Moreover, it seems that it can't listen to me or show a previous search.
It's a mess. It's like I just can use only the commands from the Moto Voice list.
Can anyone confirm that the previous commands work for them?

Yeah that's the problem I have. The Google commands have never worked for me through moto voice. BUT if I tell it to do something like "check the weather", it'll do that. It's almost like the Google or moto app needs some kind of storage or access permission to actually ~save~ reminders, events, alarms, etc. I don't know why it does this but I have a hard time believing that we are the only ones having this problem. Creating reminders without having to unlock the phone or use "ok Google" was one of the reasons I liked this phone to begin with and it doesn't even work.

It was with great horror that I discovered that Google is now forcing the effin' Google Assistant down our throats. Home long press now launches this abomination of an app. Quickly figured out how to disable the crapware, but nowong press of home does nothing. So Google, of you are reading this....
I DON'T WANT TO BE TALKING TO MY PHONE ALL THE TIME, I HAVE A LIFE AND PEOPLE TO TALK TO.
Is there a way to recover the old functionality? I want long press to launch the old style Google app. If no, what is the version of the last update that does not include this POS software? I had not updated for a while and now this...
Apologies for fuming, it is just so freaking invasive on Google's part to ot even ask if I want to opt in.
PS setting ro.opa.eligible_device=false does NOT do the trick. Grrrr, this is getting more annoying by the minute

Unfortunately editing the build.prop does not seem to do the trick for me. I have to wonder how long before Google screws up that workaround.
I am curious, is there ANYONE out there who wants to ALWAYS talk to their phone and have the phone talk to them. Say you are in the middle of a meeting and want to quickly check on something. What is Google thinking? Or am I missing something?

You can still type in searches using the Google search bar without talking. I prefer Google Assistant to the old functionality but I guess everyone uses their phone differently. Most people likely consider GA an enhancement rather than an intrusion like you do. Many people were unhappy that it was only offered officially on the Pixel but you can't please everybody.
All you have to do is turn GA off within settings.

Sadly this is not true. When you disable it in settings and long press home it pops up and says, Google Assistant is currently disabled, would you like to enable it? Options for yes or no. Yes pops up with assistant and no just disabled the window with no further actions. It doesn't revert to the old now on tap functionality.
i want to delete Google Assistant permanently, any clue ?
I'm surprised this thread doesn't have more attention. Before I had assistant I was trying to get it early on my device but now I am trying to go back to now on tap just because of the ease of use and time it takes to get to google.
The best workaround I found was this SwipeUp utility app. You can press and hold either your home button or fingerprint scanner to open straight to the Google app instead of the popup assistant (which is basically a blank screen until you say something or press on the keyboard symbol to type a search) it works really well.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.AdrianCampos.swipeuputility
No solution's to this yet? This is absurd.
@tolol @applePhx in this thread someone recommends deleting the Google Home App folder from /system using twrp to get completely rid of Google Assistant. Haven't tested it though
