[solution] fix your battery on wls8 - Galaxy S II General

hey,
many of us have faced an issue with the battery after flashing the official JB
well this may not be a sol " cuz i don't know what happend!"
so what i did was
1. flashing LPF 4.0.3 wipe data before flashing , not after.
2. flashing the ls8 and the lpx modem at the same time no data wipe
thats it

I'll try this

From the screenshot I see that you have a big problem with reception signal, which, most likely, causes many wakelocks. Change the modem with one from your country. And whats the solution btw?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium

I don't get this too. Your screenshot is full of wakelocks, and the only reason your battery isn't empty yet is because your screen wasn't on all the time...

I found out that the new "google now" ate ALOT of battery in my case.
Try disabling this.

for the screen on! i was oppening the secreen or receiving calls
yesterday i stayed upto 6 hrs after the screen shot was taken, wifi connected and it last till 7%
for my modem, the area where i live having problems with connection, all the modems kh3 and lb7 did the same, at least this modem catched the gps here

Sure, but first post what apps you're running in background -- maybe it's not media, but something else like Google Now, location service (maps)? How does your phone "sleep"? Does it wake up?
Anyway, media fix that seem to resolve my problems (no more media scanner in task manager)

hmm, im having a hard time understanding whats going on there, but i do switch my cam to sd card as location storage.
regarding your question, i tend to kill tasks always after i finish using my phone, in fact i clear the ram.
this is what im having right now, considering that i slept 8 hours of these 18 there, it's way too much, oh and yeah, i have the extended battery kit (official one), one more reason to moan.

This is the best battery performance I have ever had from my sgs2 (using siyah kernel and the scripts from the neat rom and siyah optimisation thread

Just as a precaution, copy cache folder from SD internal to SD external and delete everything in SD internal DCIM folder. Something else is draining your battery. That 18 hours is too little IMO

/storage/sdcard0/DCIM only contains Photo and Video folders, both empty. im using the stock file manager, i guess what u've asked me for may be hidden. However, there is a "/storage/extSdCard/DCIM/Camera/cache"

It is hidden in mine, but if you see the one on excard than you should see one in internal card. You have to look for wakelocks -- install BetterBatteryStats. I don't know any other method. That app will basically tell you anything.
Give this a read. It will get you started on how to find what's causing the wakes

Mediaserver + SD card = 100% CPU (HELP!!)

Ok this is driving me off the wall. The process called "mediaserver" is using 100% of my CPU time even while the screen is off. It forces my phone to go to max clock the whole time.
When I unmount my sd card (which has music, files, etc) it goes back to 0% instantly and the CPU clocks down to normal. The SECOND I remount it, BAM it goes back to using 100% of my CPU. The battery drain is incredible.
I have googled the issue and there are several single post threads with no response or solution.
Can someone please help me?
whats is your rom and kernel? is it an app? if it is, uninstall it.

It was happening on virtuous and ultimatedroid. And from the above post we can see that it is happening on CM too. It is not app related. Ending everything using a task manager and/or restarting the phone doesn't fix. I did a complete wipe of data/chache/davik before flashing roms.
Simply put, if your sd card has media on it (music, pics, etc), mediaserver will go nuts.
Hoping the awesome people at x-da can help us out!
I just got the 32 GB SD card yesterday and the same thing started happening to me today. I did a factory reset, different roms, back to normal and it still is happening. My verizon extended battery lasted about 5 hours today...and it was unusually hot as well. Does this happen to others on smaller SD cards?
I had this problem a while back. Turns out it was a corrupt movie file. Something vlc played fine, but the media scanning app hated and drained my battery every 3 hours for two days until I figured it out.
Remove all media from your sd card, pics, movies, music and see what happens. Add it back slowly. If that is the problem.
Another potential issue is a corrupt sd card. You can try reformatting it or scanning it for bad sectors, but my guess is that its a bad file.

Mediaserver is an app not part of the OS so just uninstall it. It hasn't been updated for Froyo anyway judging from whats on the market.

Update - i did factory reset . still it didnt help.
should i take to service center .
Thanks
Does the tab feels warm? which is the highest battery usage app?
I used to have a issue whereby the media scanner service gone in an infinite loop scanning for songs in my device..
Have to hardreset to solve it. Normally my overnight drain is 5%, that is with wifi/bluetooth/gps/notification/background sync all on.
My issue was with Exchange. It was draining 30-40% of the battery overnight. After removing my exchange account I lose ~5%
no i am not using wifi all the time .
At night ts on standby wifi off, everything else is off.
even if i put in airplane mode still it drains .
but using the tab ,battery does not drain.
should i go to service center ??

Well.. i recommend try hard resetting the device before returning it
When i first got the tab from M1, it ran into battery issues,
but mine is because of media scanner service
And when i connect to android debugger, it shows the media scanner trying to read my music files but failed, it goes in a infinite loop, making the tab heats up
Anyway my problem was solved when i hard reset to factory settings.
Plus i don link any of the samsung apps. (email, or social hubs)

I always thought 15% drainage overnight is normal when you were not charging it. as there are many bloatware running in the background.
Anyway, you could install and run Taskiller and you can see Galaxy Tab 7.7 has a lot of background services running.
Not all of those services are useful, like SocialHub, and they cannot be uninstalled, but you can still freeze it with Titanium Backup Pro (a paid app, need root). You could consider other options like force uninstall (with root as well), but it is risky and not recommended.
Nevertheless, plugging your tab to charger while sleeping is good idea as it prolongs the battery life. The smaller the depth of discharge, the longer the battery will last. Always avoid full-discharging.

Get Maximum Battery Out of Stock JellyBean ROM (plus fix Media draining much battery)

Personally have been experiencing HUGE challenges regarding battery life of JB. and i have searched and searched, complained and complained in many xda threads. But in the end, i think this method is the best I figured out and it works pretty well!
I discovered the main cause of battery drain on JB is the 'Media Scanner'. I dont know exactly what the issue is, but it DRAINS your battery! I thought it was a corrupt file in my phone that was causing Media scanner to get stuck and scan for loong periods instead of 2 - 3 minutes which it should take regularly. (btw media scanner is launched every time you restart your mobo or make changes to your media files as far as i know). I formatted both my Internal and External SDs but it still didnt help. Now use the following Steps below to solve these issues.
1. Download Media scanner ROOT.
This app - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.addz.mediascannerroot&hl=en
2. Download Media scanner also
This one - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.addz.mediascanner
3. Always set 'Power saving' option on phone on. I can assure you that you'll hardly notice the difference in performance when you turn on power saving.
Having said that, if you want more brightness, you can increase from toggle or just tick auto by the side of brightness level settings right there in your notification bar.
Also, if you need to game or use heavy app that require alot of system resources, just turn off power saving.(Because power saving slows down your processors Maximum state from 1200MHz or 1.2GHz to 800MHz.)
How to use the apps mentioned in numbers 1 and 2.
First one is to stop it (Media scanner) from ever scanning. So open that one with ROOT at the end of the name (Grant SU prompt), then hit disable media scanner button wait for it to work. Just one or two seconds.
Sometimes you might open your gallery and notice a file is missing or you might not see even a single picture or vid in it.
ONLY NOW! can you open the second app dat DOESN'T contain ROOT at the end of its name.
Just open it and then hit the back button to close. thats all!
What this does if to call the media scanner you disabled earlier with first app so it can scan your SD Cards and your gallery will display your files.
You can read the application descriptions on Play store for better understanding.
If you notice that these steps still doesn't help you with your battery drain issue, try disabling Motions and Animations in debugging options too. Both in settings. Then test battery again and see how good it works.
IMPORTANT: You also want to change PhilZ recovery Backup format from .dup to .tar as this might be the reason why Media scanner goes crazy. How to - Reboot into recovery, select Backup and restore, then select 'Choose backup format', then hit tar. Now delete all previous backups done in .dup format and then hit 'Free Unused backup Data' or go into phone, delete the folders of the backups done in .dup and then delete evreything in blobs folder. Now do a fresh Nandroid which will now be in .tar format. ( Always Have a Nandroid backup on your phone , it can come in handy! )
REMEMBER: What works for one person, might not exactly work for everyone. We don't have 100% same hardware. . So take it easy while throwing your shots at me. I just decided to share this.
I hope this helps some solve their battery issue.
Please hit thanks if this helps you.
Attached screenshots of my test from steps in first post.

Here are the details of the screenshots i attached to this post, just incase you can't go through all of them.

2. Battery at 95%
97% (5:58:26) deep sleep after 6h:07m:18s (total time on batt3)
Had major whatsapp activity in the backgroud (I always have )
3. Battery at 70% - 12:59pm
Screen time - 2h 4m 10s
4. Battery at 50% - 2:30pm
Screen time - 3h 17m 38s
5. Battery at 40% - 3:06pm
Screen time - 3h 53m 12s
6. Battery at 30% - 3:48pm
Screen time - 4h 33m 27s
7. Battery at 20% - 4:27pm
Screen time - 5h 12m 20s
8. Battery at 10% - 5:03pm
Screen time - 5h 48m 21s
9. Battery at 1% - 5:31pm
Screen time - 6h 15m 19s
Also to achieve this, i had all bloatware frozen (full list in my S2 Facebook group - Link in my signature)
Turned Off Sync, and motion (really dont know if this affected result since i guess you need to use the motion,
for it to use up your battery).
Anyways, having said all these, i had running in background, facebook messenger, whatsapp, email pushing hourly,
Instagram. Did some surfing using Opera mini from time to time, Watched Videos... and some other stuff i cant remember of course.
The fact that Power Saving does not slow down the phone like older builds is strange.
I don't even know if it works that well yet.
I mean, I used Power Saving on my friends S3 and the phone got really slow.

I don't know why you guys have this media scanner problem. My battery life with LSJ (NeatROM Lite) is the best I have ever seen on SGS2, (best screen-on time + call time, and it sleeps like a baby) and media scanner isn't showing in BBS, at least not frequently. Maybe you all are using .dup format for CWM backups? It's the default on Philz kernel (at least it was), but I changed that in recovery options to .tar.

Not sure what people are complaining about?
I've stripped alot, and i mean alot of APK's from the system folder. Had around 6 hours screen time, and around 1 day 3 hours uptime on first cycle.
No wakelocks, nothing. Best ROM i've used in a long time!
After disabling media scanner my music player and video player doesnt show any files.. and the ringtones are set to default samsung tones instead of what i hav set..

+1. What is the most important thing - disable Google Now, change dup to tar, delete backups created in dup (they are causing media scanners to go wild), disable motion, disable smart stay and that's it, more or less.

This usually doesn't kill the background process. I had issues when I first got the phone with Google services hogging battery. Used Gsam battery to figure out what is running and then you can disable whatever you don't need. But first you have to figure out what exactly is using the battery.
I thought I read somewhere that if your SD card is bad and you are playing media off of it, it was causing something to stay awake and eat battery. Though, I could have just imagined that???

I read about the SD card issue as well. I had issues initially with Google Maps eating battery, not as bad as some have reported but still it bothered me. Media Services running was a bit of a pain as well. Then I read someone mentioned that a factory reset should be done, so then I backup what little I had and did the reset. Now, the phone is much better than before along with me doing the home button, removing apps thing .. battery easily goes for 2.5 days (data usage via LTE and wifi on when needed and gaming / music) I also turn on airplane mode at night. My SD card is a 16gb Class 10 Sandisk which previously used on my S2 LTE i727 from Rogers which I formatted prior to using on the S4.
Hope my little tid bit helps
Mediaserver is a biotch. If you have a bad Media file on your card the phone looks for a way to decode whatever .ext (extension) the media file has and will continue to do so until it finds the correct decoder. When you have a bad file mediaserver continues to loop over and over until you get rid of that file. Best bet is to back up all your stuff onto your pc and format the card. Then re-load the card and this should rid of your mediaserver drain.

Battery draining on stock rom.

I bought this phone few days ago and after some using noticed that battery drains really fast with WiFi/Mobile data. I downloaded Greenify and hibernated all apps using network. I turned off Sync, NFC, Energy saving on, screen brightness really low, gps, bluetooth still it drains with 2-4h using WiFi or mobile data(3g).
Can anyone think of something that drains my battery so fast? Thanks for any help!

Sounds like you either have a process that's preventing your phone from going into deep sleep, or your battery is malfunctioning. Try checking your sleep states with an app like BetterBatteryStats and see if your device goes into sleep mode properly.
P.s. My device lasts ~2 days with medium usage, always connected to the internet with either 3g or WiFi,and I'm not even using Greenify or anything similar, so the battery life is generally pretty decent.

Check the partial wakelocks screen. You should be able to locate the app that's causing the problem there. Also, I've read somewhere that cleaning the cache (either through Storage Settings or recovery) helps.

Well, it looks like that AudioMix process is causing your problems. I did a google search and found this thread that might help you.
Some have reported that disabling touch and lock screen sounds fixed the issue, while others said that clearing the cache did it for them. I'm afraid you're going to have to experiment
Thanks for the help! I'll try to fix the issue then.

It didn't solve it. I'm still having the issue after factory resetting, flashing a new rom, and data resetting. So I noticed that below Audiomix theres written "1013". I googled it, and it should be media according to this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=442557 . This thing I'm having is such a headache.

Hmm. That process is obviously tied to something media related, but I can't tell what... A music player perhaps? Do you use any media streaming apps? I'm afraid I'm at my wit's end here... Wish someone else would lend a hand :/

I disabled apps like "Adapt Sound" and "SapaMonitor" and AudioMix went down to 1%.(I used media player to try if disabling these apps screws something up). Battery life seems a little bit better but hey, it could be better . Thanks for all the help again! That was really awful... Glad it's over
Happy to help
