I have been in the habit since my S2 LTE i727 of clearing out my background apps. With the S4, I hold down the home button which will show all current apps, click on the icon at the right (three lines with an X). This will kill the apps you last run and should help.

This usually doesn't kill the background process. I had issues when I first got the phone with Google services hogging battery. Used Gsam battery to figure out what is running and then you can disable whatever you don't need. But first you have to figure out what exactly is using the battery.
I thought I read somewhere that if your SD card is bad and you are playing media off of it, it was causing something to stay awake and eat battery. Though, I could have just imagined that???

I read about the SD card issue as well. I had issues initially with Google Maps eating battery, not as bad as some have reported but still it bothered me. Media Services running was a bit of a pain as well. Then I read someone mentioned that a factory reset should be done, so then I backup what little I had and did the reset. Now, the phone is much better than before along with me doing the home button, removing apps thing .. battery easily goes for 2.5 days (data usage via LTE and wifi on when needed and gaming / music) I also turn on airplane mode at night. My SD card is a 16gb Class 10 Sandisk which previously used on my S2 LTE i727 from Rogers which I formatted prior to using on the S4.
Hope my little tid bit helps

Mediaserver is a biotch. If you have a bad Media file on your card the phone looks for a way to decode whatever .ext (extension) the media file has and will continue to do so until it finds the correct decoder. When you have a bad file mediaserver continues to loop over and over until you get rid of that file. Best bet is to back up all your stuff onto your pc and format the card. Then re-load the card and this should rid of your mediaserver drain.

[Q] help with battery hungry games!?!

I am in need of help in dealing with games that keep eating battery life after the game is closed. I have downloaded different kinds of app killers and i do not see them on the list but under battery options i see every game i have played since i had the tablet on. Is there a better option or am i doomed to turning my nook on/off after every game i play?
I am new to all of this and may be off base here. But in all of my mind melting reading here I picked up Nook Tweaks off the market for free and from what I have read maybe some of those settings might help you.
Check this out http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1104039 Maybe this will help. I am still experimenting and learning.

That's a good program for overclocking and boosting audio, sadly not what i need atm
I was having the same problem. I downloaded an app called 1 click cleaner. after its up and running I simply go into the app and click the cache clear button. after that it will pull up any aps or games that I ran. I can click them one at a time and force stop the app first then if i want I can also clean any cache associated with that app. It stops any apps continuing to run and draining my battery?
Some apps shut down properly if you use the back arrow to quit rather than just pressing the home button. Look for a quit button in those games.
I've had Opera stay running in the background if I didn't back out.

I tried this app today and it clears cache but does not bring up anything else even though on the battery use list there are games still running even when i hit the back button to close games. I have had nothing but battery issues ever since i rooted this NC ; / What is even more frustrating is i read on these forums how people are getting 2 days use out of the battery even with moderate use and if i do anything i lose 20-30% of my battery. There must be a way to get this set up right but i feel like only those in the know want to keep their secrets.
From what I've found, the battery usage screen on cm7 is not only applications that are running but also lists apps that have been running but are now closed. If the app doesn't show up in a task killer (I use ES Task Manager) it's not running. Certain games are high demand on the system and will drain the battery more quickly than reading apps (like aldiko) The last tip I have is to turn the screen brightness down. The screen is the biggest battery killer. Also, turn off wifi when you're not using it.
These are what I do and end up getting 2 days of moderate (low gaming high reading) use.

That sounds awfully high. What Rom and version # are you using? Also, what CPU governor and/or overclock settings? It sounds like something is wrong.
That said, I have had "rogue" apps that keeping restarting and usually just end up removing them because they weren't worth the trouble. Personally, I also use GoLauncher and in the applications menu it has a nifty screen to conveniently show the currently-running apps with a button to close them.
I am running cm7.1 and my governor is on conservative. I do not have it overclocked, its at stock 300/800.
Anyone able to help?

[solution] fix your battery on wls8

hey,
many of us have faced an issue with the battery after flashing the official JB
well this may not be a sol " cuz i don't know what happend!"
so what i did was
1. flashing LPF 4.0.3 wipe data before flashing , not after.
2. flashing the ls8 and the lpx modem at the same time no data wipe
thats it
I'll try this
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
From the screenshot I see that you have a big problem with reception signal, which, most likely, causes many wakelocks. Change the modem with one from your country. And whats the solution btw?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
I don't get this too. Your screenshot is full of wakelocks, and the only reason your battery isn't empty yet is because your screen wasn't on all the time...

I found out that the new "google now" ate ALOT of battery in my case.
Try disabling this.
for the screen on! i was oppening the secreen or receiving calls
yesterday i stayed upto 6 hrs after the screen shot was taken, wifi connected and it last till 7%
for my modem, the area where i live having problems with connection, all the modems kh3 and lb7 did the same, at least this modem catched the gps here

Sure, but first post what apps you're running in background -- maybe it's not media, but something else like Google Now, location service (maps)? How does your phone "sleep"? Does it wake up?
Anyway, media fix that seem to resolve my problems (no more media scanner in task manager)

hmm, im having a hard time understanding whats going on there, but i do switch my cam to sd card as location storage.
regarding your question, i tend to kill tasks always after i finish using my phone, in fact i clear the ram.
this is what im having right now, considering that i slept 8 hours of these 18 there, it's way too much, oh and yeah, i have the extended battery kit (official one), one more reason to moan.
This is the best battery performance I have ever had from my sgs2 (using siyah kernel and the scripts from the neat rom and siyah optimisation thread

Just as a precaution, copy cache folder from SD internal to SD external and delete everything in SD internal DCIM folder. Something else is draining your battery. That 18 hours is too little IMO

/storage/sdcard0/DCIM only contains Photo and Video folders, both empty. im using the stock file manager, i guess what u've asked me for may be hidden. However, there is a "/storage/extSdCard/DCIM/Camera/cache"
It is hidden in mine, but if you see the one on excard than you should see one in internal card. You have to look for wakelocks -- install BetterBatteryStats. I don't know any other method. That app will basically tell you anything.
Give this a read. It will get you started on how to find what's causing the wakes

[Q] Indexing Service Killing Battery

I have a SM-900V that is running a rooted stock version of MJ7. I removed most of the bloatware, but I noticed that my battery drains much faster than before.
Below is a screenshot of my battery usage by app. I see that the index service is using more battery than ever.
Can I uninstall this application? What are the advantages/disadvantages of doing this? What can I do to change the indexing settings?
Thank you all for your help

I noticed the exact same thing was happening on my Verizon Note 3 last week sometime as well. Usually when I'm at work all day, I leave work around 4 and my battery is still 90-95% full, but all of a sudden one day after work, my dang battery was showing like 45-55% !! I was like WTF??? So I did the same thing as you and checked the battery stats and found the exact same thing, "IndexService," was EATING MY BATTERY ALIVE! It was practically dropping percentages in front of my eyes..
I did a lot of research on xda and all over the web and there's a TON of info about it. LOTS and LOTS of people have experienced this problem besides just us, so I didn't feel NEARRRLLLYYY as bad lol. The general consensus from others experiencing this is that it has to do with the "IndexService" scanning the files on the phone and "getting hung up" on a corrupted/bad .pdf file(s), thus stuck in some sort of loop of trying to scan/analyze the culprit .pdf file(s), thus eating your battery alive. From what I've read, there's not really any way to really determine what the specific file(s) is/are, so most people have just removed the last few .pdf files that they've downloaded/transferred to their phones. I guess your options for that route are either deleting the last few(or all new ones) .pdf files, sending them to cloud storage, transferring them over to another form of media storage(different sd card, pc hard drive, cloud, etc.), formatting the external SD card(if that's where the file(s) are located), or removal and replacing with a different card altogether. After you remove whatever is the cause, just try to avoid downloading any .pdf files at all.
I, on the other hand, didn't feel like getting rid of any files, so I just used the donation version of the "Greenify" app and greenified "IndexService" as well as "S-Finder"( "S-Finder" is a Samsung search app that's a co-conspirator involved in all of this mess!! ). By using "Greenify," it seemed to solve my problem almost immediately, as over the next few hours after "Greenifying" those two, it was almost like instant gratification! I haven't tried using TiBackup to freeze them, but I'm pretty certain that I read of that also being an option. I don't see why it wouldn't work just the same, if not better than the methods I just discussed.
Good luck and I hope this helps a little bit!! :good:

Thanks. I did just load a bunch of PDFs onto my phone. I'll remove them and see if it helps. I'll move them to the cloud, as you suggested.
Any other tips?
Removing all of the PDF files and putting them into the cloud vastly improved my battery life back to what I was used to! Thanks for the tip!
I'll have to try Greenify.
I noticed this same thing, but not after putting PDFs on my phone, it happened after using S-Note.
Hopefully this works, kinda bad to have a Note 3 and not really be able to use my S-Pen to take notes on it because the indexing goes mad whenever I do, especially now that I have 4.4 and the other major selling point of this phone has been gimped.

[Q] Overheating problems on my Galaxy S4.

Overheating on my Galaxy S4.
I have a Galaxy S4 for about a year, I have this problem almost since I bought it, but it appears and reappears, so I let it go.
My Galaxy S4, using WhatsApp Music and the CPU temperature rises to just using these programs 45-50ºC
Using only the poweramp the instrument reaches 65c for no reason.
Using browser is hopeless, the device rises to 50-70 degrees and finally restarts or shuts down.
When I bought the unit in the first week I realized that he was heating a lot, but did not reach this temperature (50-70) normally.
I read in various forums that the normal temperature of the Galaxy S4 units were 35-56c
Recently, I downloaded a few albums of music and some pictures on my phone that day he shot and started this strange behavior, and following the same steps bellow, the problem still persists.
I already own a Galaxy Note and I have witnessed the bug "AndroidMediaScanner".
I did all the steps (exeto formatting the MicroSD, I recently formatted to exFAT SD) Until I checked the status of the reading process of media using the Android ADB, there was nothing abnormal ..
Even without the memory card, few files in SD (just applications) the problem still appears.
What do you think? It may be a hardware problem that requires replacement?
It may be the battery?
It may be the ROM • (when the OmegaROM use a series of modules Xposed)
Recently reinstalled the ROM and the problem still persists.
I read in a blog that the DS Battery Saver could be giving conflict with the manager's native battery used in the Galaxy S4, I uninstalled the program, yet the problem persists warming.
Connected to the USB temperature suddenly increases to 65c without any reason or use.
What recommend?
Sorry for the English. I used Google translator.
Maybe i attach prints.
My initial thought would be to get a new battery. Becaus it jumps so drastically when you start charging it. You could also check your battery connections. Make sure they are free from dust and corrosion.

You have to find the "service" that is turning in background....
If you mind it is the AndroidMediaScanner, I can say from experience ( it was killing my battery in less than 5 hours)
I stopped this issue (flaw) by cleaning one by one my Music folders and deleting those empty or having no music file in it ( that sometime comes when you clean a directory from the music player interface) .
then my phone turning back to normal temperature state.

I said in the text that has nothing wrong with MediaScanner Android. I used the Android Debug Bridge to verify this and it appears to be normal.
The application showed 10% CPU usage when the unit was starting.
I used OS Monitor app (it shows up the processes of the Linux kernel and user) in order to find some buggy process that was doing it.
I removed 4GB of external memory file and checked the Android Debug Bridge MediaScanner if the process had been stuck at some file storage.
There was no error in both stores.
I witnessed this primary failure of the Android system twice on my old Galaxy Note.

Battery usage: should my phone show so much "Awake" time?

I know there are people constantly asking about battery life, but I have a very specific battery question that I can't find an answer for.
Please see the attached picture.
Should the "Awake" bar be like that? I haven't been using Samsung phones for a few years, but my old phone (an LG) didn't have that kind of awake time. At least I don't think it did. I swear that my old phone would enter deep sleep and this cause the awake bar to break up
On my Note 4, I have the exact same apps as I had on my old phone (I just got this phone last weekend too), except for the ATT bloatware, which I can't get rid of due to no root. However, the bloatware is disabled.
I only keep WiFi on (even when not connected). I tried disabling it, but it doesn't affect the Awake time. I don't use location and don't have any rogue apps. I also have Unified Daemon disabled.
Edit: Oh and I have to 910A variant. I'm posting here instead of the ATT variant's forum because I'm hoping to get a wider range of answers. I'll post in the ATT forum if needed though.
EDIT2: OK, I just removed my SD card due to a hunch. Sure enough, as soon as I did this, my phone began to sleep correctly! I'm now attempting to reformat the card via the Android system... after I back up my music and pictures of course.
This is the same card that I had in my old phone. Right when I got my Note 4, I just switched this card over to it without doing anything to it.

I reformatted my external SD card through the phone and then copied all my music and photos back to it. Now the phone is spending almost all of its time in sleep. SO problem solved :good:
I think the Indexer got stuck running all the time.
