i have a samsung galaxy y (gt 5360), and
its updated to android 4.1(not officially-using jellyblast 3.0.3 rom)
Then i rooted it and i was
messing around with the
awesome power of root. now im trying to get a
different rom, and when i go to
recovery mode, i cant flash zip files, it always gives an error message"can't mount /sdcard (No such file or directory)".
But when i reboot the system i can mount sd card and can browse all files in sd card.
Does anyone know how to fix
this recovery problem??? PLEASE HELP?!!
Send from my jelly 1.0.1 using xda app-developers app

Go to CWM >> mounts and storage>> mount everything. [sys, data, cache,sd ]
It should work now.
Btw, which kernel??

or you could just press thanks if it helped
If still not working...
If mounting your SD card or changing your SD card won't work, Try my Steps on flashing a new firmware:
1. Firstly, download/choose a firmware from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1465800
2. Once your download has finished, download Odin 1.85 from here: forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=581913
3. If you have installed Samsung Kies, stop it, also for adb sessions
4. Open Odin 1.85
5. Boot to download mode, make sure its shut down (Vol. Down + Home Button + Power Button)
6. When in download mode already, press Vol. Up button
7. Now, connect your phone to your pc, when Odin detects your phone you can now press the start button
8. Wait for installation to complete, it will reboot automatically,
9. When successfully booted, your done!
10. Enjoy! your newly fixed phone...
Above instructions are not fully detailed(COMPLETE), but it will work

Understand the problem correctly? I see your post and i knew you were just doing the 10 post thingy.
Good going but try to understand the prob and then help. Thank you!
And OP, there is no actual need of odin. Mount and try.
I feel your CWM is the problem. Flash stock kernel from Doky's thread and try again!

Try flashing stock kernel.
It should work.
Or else try to use a different SD.
First go with a different SD. Still if it doesn't mount, flash stock kernel and try. DONT TRY TO FLASH ANY OTHER KERNEL.
AND HAVE A BACKUP!

UPDATE: Applicable to any GT-i9100 4.1.2 firmwares
The most easiest way to root LS8 is to flash CWM-SuperSU-v0.97.zip through stock recovery
Advantage: NO YELLOW TRIANGLE
Steps:
1. Save file to external sd card
2. Shut down
3. Open stock recovery (press power + vol up + home button)
4. Install zip from external sd card
5. Select the file "CWM-SuperSU-v0.97.zip
Wait and reboot
For those who don't have external sd cards.. click this thread:

Flashing the latest siyah and philz kernel can also root this rom. To remove the yellow triangle. Use triangle away of chainfire

Just a note, for the above to work, you need an external SD, not internal from the phone.
Edit: I know you have mentioned it, but many people like me, tried to flash it from internal SD.

hi
i am pretty much newb at rooting and flashing.
i flashed the official jelly bean on my samsung s2, now i want to root it!
But i have a problem, i dont have sd card in my phone, so i have to flash using internal card.
In recovery i only have :
apply update from adb
apply update from external storage.
appy update from cache
When i chose "apply update from external storage" i get E:Failed to mount / sdccard ( No such file or directory )
I didnt tryed the two other options, as i dont have what they do/mean.

No option "install zip from external storage"
First time rooter here.
When I got to stock recovery (fresh install of official spanish JB firmware), the only options that I see are:
1. reboot system now
2. apply update from ADB
3. apply update from external storage
4. wipe data / factory reset
5. wipe cache partition
6. apply update from cache
Is option 3 the same as "install zip from external storage"?

Hi. Has anyone been succesful at flashing Siyah without wiping the device on LS8?
When I did I could not get pass the blinking Siyah logo. After two blinks, the phone would turn itself off... Any suggestions? Thanks.
hi i want to install cwm on xxls8, searched on google found something but link was down and no way to contact the dev. so do i have to downgrad in order to install cwm/custom roms?
Well, I could flash Siyah beta4. I guess there was some problem with the stable version...
EDIT: By the way, I flashed from internal SD card. At least in my device, when it says "external sd" in stock recovery it actually points to the internal SD.

All you need to do is flash Siyah v6 beta4 via ODIN. Not only will you have a better kernel then stock but you will also have root, custom recovery (cwm), cwm manager and SU to allow/disallow root apps.

If i'm correct, I think 1) actually replaces stock recovery with a different recovery (CWM), and flashes a modified (rooted) version of the stock kernel. 2) keeps the stock recovery and kernel and only purely roots your phone.
The advantage with 1) is that you can use CWM which has a lot more features such as backing up instead of the rather useless stock recovery.
Not sure about any cons.

Flash a stock rom...! Search on youtube on how to flash a stock rom.
Rom: Hyperion 8
Kernel: Savie's kernel
Theme: My own modification
odin fails the process
read here bro it helps solve your problem...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1465800
This may work if odin doesn't
Take yours sd card out your phone and put it in your pc (you will need a micro sd adapter and a pc with sd card slot or a usb sd card reader)
Download any custom rom from developers section - let's say evo-x3
Download hells fusion #50 kernel from dev section
Place both zips on sd card either via the card reader or another method if you can
Put sd card back in phone
Boot in Cwm (you will need a temporary Cwm if you don't have one)
Do a full data wipe reset (wipe data system and cache)
Mount everything (data system & cache)
Install zip from sd & choose hells fusion #50
Choose option 1 install stock rom
Restart back into recovery
Install zip & flash temporary cwm
In Cwm mount system
Install zip & select hells fusion
Choose option 2 install hells fusion
Restart back into Cwm (you will have permanent Cwm now)
Mount system
Install zip from sd & select evo-x3
Restart
With some luck everything should boot after a while (evo-x3 has no boot animation so wait at least 6mins on first boot)

Cwm will work if you have a temporary cwm
If you can get into stock recovery mode you can get cwm
Or if you have a kernel with a permanent Cwm you can go straight into it
Push volume up and home button - hold these buttons & push & hold power button
Phone will start in recovery mode either stock recovery or cwm depending on kernel
If it doesn't then it's a hard brick & you will need to search on how to resolve hard brick
First of all try not to move the cable while flashing....
Second if odin fails consistently it is possible either odin or the packages have gone currupt ...download a new one
flash pda first if work good flash all three pda modem and csc....
try and report....

A while ago, I installed Hyperion 7 in my SGY using CWM, I taught of installing another kernel name Merruk Kernel, so I googled it and found some instructions for installing Merruk, I followed the instructions given correctly, I rebooted my phone but it was stuck in Galaxy Y logo (not yet glowing). I tried restoring my previous back up using CWM but its says "Cant mount /data" that's why it cannot restore, I also tried using Odin and flashed the stock ROM but i'm stuck in the samsung glowing logo. Please help. (

I used a firmware for my country, Philippines. I already fix this problem by luckily mounted /data, /system, and /cache, lol. thanks btw.
Alternate guide...
Rom
1 Go to cwm
2 Mount system, data, cache
3 Flash hyperion 7 and wait for it to boot
4 make a backup of ur rom using cwm backup and restore
Kernel
1 in merruk's thread there should be an ext4 converter so flash it. The ext4 converter formats the system, data and cache.
2 restore the rom you backed up.
3 after restore, flash merruk's kernel the v2.5 the one with overclock feature.

I know there are various this and that posts but only one was similar to my below solution. No RIFF box required!
My phone was stuck in boot loop for last 2-3 months. Only way I have managed to get the BEST and MOST COMPLETE CWM flashed was with SEMAPHORE cwm!
Idea was simple at the end!
WE NEED TO get phone on stock firmware BUT somehow to make the internal SD operational again!
Steps!
ONLY PREREQ: BE ABLE TO ENTER "DOWNLOAD" MODE! and have the drivers installed on your pc for your phone to be recognized.
* You can have an empty external SD card in the slot. No harm but better to remove the SIM card if any.
- Use ODIN (i ve used Odin3 v1.83) to flash SEMAPHORE (Semaphore_ICS_1.3.0s.tar ). No PIT file, No partitioning! Simply put the tar to PDA field and flash!
- Reboot into SEMAPHORE CWM and go to section with /data partition! YES! Select size 2GB and SWAP the max 256MB when asked! Exit and restart!
- Enter DOWNLOAD mode again and now flash (you need to find the stock EU region free firmware I9000XXJVU_I9000OXAJVU_OXA.zip which is actually split in 3 tar and not just one!)
- ODIN 1.83 will automatically enable Re-Partition & Auto Reboot & F. Reset Time when you flash 3 files! Leave ALL enabled! Everything else just leave as is and apply below!
You need PIT file 512 for the PIT field!
Then:
i . PDA: CODE_I9000XXJVU_CL851880_REV03_user_low_ship.tar.md5
i i . PHONE: MODEM_I9000XXJVU_REV_00_CL1092175.tar.md5
i i i . CSC: GT-I9000-CSC-MULTI-OXAJVU.tar.md5
FLASH above and your phone should come start up normally to STOCK XXJVY firmware!
Once you up and running and looking forward to flash you most wanted custom ROM please always follow below procedure that I KNOW is mentioned over and over again!
1. ENABLE USB Debugging! (for CM 10.1 users its hidden in MODEL # in about section of settings (press 7 times)
2. ALLOW apps from unknown sources for installing ROM Manager etc
3. Root the phone by flushing with ODIN the CF-Root-XX_OXA_JVU_2.3.6-v4.3-CWM3RFS.tar in PDA field! - Simple but effective you will be rooted and CWM!
4. Copy your new ROM zip to the external SD.
5. Enter CWM. IMPORTANT: a. Wipe/Factory reset! b. Wipe Cache c. Enter Advanced and WIPE Dalvik Cache! (ALWAYS DO THE 3 steps prior flashing new firm)
6. Now you can select your ROM zip from file on ext sd card and flush it. * If you have custom rom like CM 10.1 and you want the Gapps now its the time to do it just after ROM flash finished! - You need to select correct GAPP based on the custom rom you will apply. ICS with ICS GAPPS, JB with JB GAPPS
THE BEST/STABLE/FAST/NET OK/CAM OK etc firmware with great boot i highly recommend is ICS_4.0.3_MR1-RC4.2_I9000.zip . Try it on your GT-i9000 after above procedure and I think you will be the happiest man! Extremely FAST and GREAT Battery handling!
PS I tried latest CM 10.1 but not as fast as above! Not needed in my opinion on the GT-i9000!
Thats all folks!
First, this should be useful for noobs but maybe in the Q&A section?

Havent tried i9003 as i dont have the exact model in hand but you can follow the steps and basically replace the files with the correct ones for your i9003. Again I repeat you will need for each model its own files and process... If you would like me to repair yours you can pm me and see if this would be possible.
bump i9000 boot loop

You choose a custom rom you read and understand the rom and its instructions then flash .
Many roms have how to videos .
Basics
Download the Rom
Enter Recovery Mode
Do a Full Wipe
Install The Rom

First step should be install a custom recovery. For example TWRP. You can't install with stock recovery.

Then read, read and install it.

Find a rom i development forums here and look for instructions there.
Steps....
-1. I am not responsible for any damage caused. This is how I learned and what I taught my friends using Sammy.
0. Backup all your data to SD card or PC.
1. go to https://twrp.me/Devices/ and search your device model and download the latest .tar file (something like 4.4.tar)
2. search download and install Kies in your PC, this is for getting all Samsung drivers.
3. search download and extract "odin 3.0.9" in a folder in your pc.
4. press Volume Down + Home + Power and get into Download mode (you'll have to press Volume Up if it asks to continue)
5. Now phone will show "Downloading", Run "Odin.exe" from odin folder and Connect your phone to PC via USB cable.
6. Odin will detect your phone in blue color in first slot, select the downloaded .tar file in Odin and click start
7. do not disconnect the phone as it will restart.
8. after restarting, remove phone. then shutdown.. press Volume Up + Home + power and get into recovery. (TWRP) (click Reboot System and use as normal)
9. Download your favorite (flashable zip of) ROM, click Wipe (select all in TWRP, will erase all data)
10. After successful wipe, click install, select ROM zip from SD card and follow onscreen instructions.
11. After install, go to Wipe or Advanced Wipe and "Clear Dalvik Cache"
12. Reboot System. Enjoy
