Can the gorilla glass panels be replaced? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello guys, I've got my Nexus 4 like a week ago, and it is just beautiful, and I like to use it with no case/bumper, so far I've taken care of it and it hadn't scratched or anything but yesterday I almost drop it, and I was wondering if it gets cracked, can I get a front or back gorilla glass panel to replace it? If not I'm gonna have to buy a case, but if I can I will keep using it naked and just replace it when it cracks, thanks

it can be replaced but the glass panels cost around 150 to 170 dollars. Thats like half the phone price.

Best to have lg replace the glass if it breaks. Costs the same as to do if yourself and takes about 9 days total depending what country you have to send it to.

The front screen is going to be the most expensive. The digitizer and LCD are fused together.

Am I the first to drop my nexus?

Damn what a night. So I went did a trade for this nexus with a guy. The nexus was sitting on the box on the trunk of my car while we were switching Sims next thing I see is it sliding off the box hits the ground and bounces. My heart dropped. About 5 dings on the bezel. The screen and back survived. So I got the Google play bumper and its good as new. Sucks Cuz I like the phone naked

No. Look at the glass threads. Tons of people dropped theirs and shattered glass before you.

Yes, you're the first person in the world to drop the nexus 4. Congrats!
No just the first top admit it. Other people say magic made theirs break.

I got my phone last night and I already dropped it today from about chest high while taking of my sweat shirt. No broken glass or anything from a hard wood floor. I think it really depends on how it lands. Oy really seems fairly durable to me.
If you average up all the thousands of sold I am sure the ones with broken glass are a very nonsignificant percentage..

Just broke my glass back -___- . I dropped into power switch made of aluminum and made several back cracks. Well, at least it wasn't the front.
ouch, i need protection! i still haven't taken off that original screen protector! i know if i drop mine the back glass is gonna crack

Scratched screen

Can I do anything to fix it? It's only a small scratch but it's quite annoying. Brasso? Toothpaste?
So much for Gorilla Glass!
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
Sadly no, and brasso and toothpaste doesn't even work effectively on a cell phone screen. Should have got a screen protector
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
Yep get a protector, I don't know how I scratched my screen as I treated my N4 like my precious... Yet my G300 with the original Gorilla Glass is still scratch free! GG2 is just not as good.
just get an eraser and erase it or buy a new one

I can't tell if you're serious or just trollin.......
You can't get the scratch out. but as far as screen protectors go, I'd recommend Best Skins Ever. I've had mine on for awhile and they work great, Minimal orange peel effect and they feel really smooth. You have to be really careful during install though, so if you don't have a steady hand, get someone else to help.
Cheers for the somewhat depressing comments. Have now bought a skin. Bolting horses and locking stables spring to mind!
What is the point in gorilla glass? My Sammy Galaxy S lasted much longer!
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
That is the thing... My galaxy Ace screen only had 2 scratches (from when i dropped it on a rock ), but my N4 screen got scratched over 1 week of usage? That is weird.
Get Amzer shatterproof, they hammered the hell out of the screen and it didn't crack. It is 30$ though, I got a ZAGG but it peels up at the edges so I might get amzer

No screen protector here and have been using since late November. Not a scratch on it.. Keep it clean, keep your hands clean and be careful and it will be fine.

To be honest i am kind of angry. I had to take off my screen protector, and because you can only buy it online in Poland,I had to wait 1 whole week before applying a new one. Now I never left it on front glass, and I had a case, but the front screen is still pretty scratched... and it was just 6 days!
I don't know if this is gorilla glass or not, but it sucks.

Dust front facing camera

Hello,
This is only my first week and found dust under the glass of the front facing camera. I got the phone from T-Mobile and I am doing the installment payments. Will T-Mobile replace my phone without any fees?

I had dust under my old g300 and took it back and got new 1. Admittedly that was in UK but there shouldn't be dust under the screen at all. Get it sorted as it will continually bug you for the remainder of your contract.
Ya id return it. Dust under the screen of a week old phone is completely unacceptable.
I'd suggest you take it back immediately for a new one. Be sure to bring your receipt and head straight for the customer service counter.
The dust is under the glass of the front facing camera. The display screen itself is dust free, looks awesome. Anybody with the same issue?

I'm concerned T-Mobile will try to charge me a deductible in a week old phone.
Edit: looks like I have 14 days for a full refund.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
I'm wondering if dust really got in there or was the dust there from manufacturing itself.

Manufacturing I would guess. As it's only 1 week old, unless it was a refurb? Even so dust shouldn't be getting in.
Alright guys, got a new Nexus 4 from T-Mobile. This one has no dust.

Cracked digitizer

So today I flipped open my case and my digitizer was cracked on my less than 2 week old N7. Won't let me unlock or anything. I have not dropped or otherwise damaged it. Has this happend to anyone else? Manufacturing defect? I also noticed last night that on black screens there were some red splotches. I'm just afraid if I try to get it replaced they will say physical damage have a nice day.

I believe it and no have not heard of this happening. If it was a drop, there would be a clear dent or shatter marking on that line before it splits into two. Just talk to google or where-ever you bought it from and try to keep calm. When glass breaks, it shatters and not produce hairline breaks like that.
get it replaced for free.

yup either that or a crack form pressure like sitting on it or having it in the back pocket and forgetting about it.
that's not a defect. it just doesn't crack on its own.

The tablet had slipped down the back of the sofa between the seat cushion and the back of the sofa. I sat down and it must have squished it. The cushions are super soft and I'm still not 100% sure it happened.

ahaha, nice!!
is Asus charging you to repair that device?
The nexus 7 has a very weak glass.
Mine got hairline crack from twisting.
Most drop test videos show it breaks on the first drop.
I have replaced first unit, waiting until local repair guy can get parts from his usual source to get first one fixed. May try contacting google/Asus about a repair but have not done that yet.

N2 glass screen protector on a N3

I ordered some note 2 glass screen protectors cause I thought I would have the n2 for quite some time but I came across a deal I couldn't pass up on Craigslist for a note 3. So I put the n2 glass screen protector on the n3. It fit pretty decent for being for a N2. It would fit even better if I wouldn't have put it on crooked lol. The glass screen protectors were 10 dollars shipped on eBay.

Thats actually a good idea. I just got my Note 3 yesterday and my screen protectors are not coming in until Monday. In the meantime I was afraid of something happening. I am going to throw my spare Note 2 screen protector on it for now.
The phone has gorilla glass 3, I have yet to scratch an old pos HTC thunderbolt or skyrocket. Money better spent on a square trade warranty.
Currently I put iSmooth Note 2 screen protector as temporary.
MIME will come tomorrow.

I tried using a screen protector but it was really hard to move the S-Pen across the screen. It wasn't smooth. It was like moving it across a rubber surface.

That sucks, but general use won't damage a screen, that takes some serious abuse.
Body guards makes a good glass protector, worth the $.

Sand and glass don't mix, a possible bur on keys, I've already jammed a aluminum flashlight into my pocket with the phone against the screen, no sharp edges, it did no damage. If you wear a ring with exposed stones, that too can damage. In and out of a clean pocket will do nothing, unlike the older phones.
I'd never let my fiance use a phone without a screen protector, she'd damage it in a day, depends how conscious you are of the screen.
Still cheaper to get a square trade at this point, 99 and then 100 deductible, replacing the screen is very difficult on this phone, you are more likely to break more in the process, plus it is still more $ than the warranty. Best of luck.

I had this exact problem when I initially installed my screen protector. It was extremely tough to use the S-Pen and felt extremely rubbery. The next day, I tried the S-Pen again and it was absolutely smooth and normal.
I think that there was something left on the screen protector after I initially removed the thin plastic film that they stick to it for shipping.
