Broken Digitizer - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello guys im new to the forum i've just registered
Today i've dropped my Google Nexus 7 from maybe 40 santimeters .My tablet fell on one of its edges ,my screen was cracked not pretty bad
i can use it but actually the bottom side of the screen is cracked major and my screen isnt working around the crack.
So when i saw how much money i need to give for the digitizer with LCD display i was shocked.I cant believe how stupid this is if u crack the digitizer u need to buy whole new screen.Well i think to buy digitizer from tablet 10.1 inc and to cut off the the glass equals to the shape of my Nexus and to use the cables from my cracked digitizer to connect the new one.
Do you think this is possible or to sell it for parts ?
Sry for my bad English its not my native but i hope you help me

The digitiser for a 10" tablet is bigger than a 7" screen so you can't cut one down to fit. Look on ebay to see prices for broken Nexus 7's

You could check places like eBay or Craigslist for a cheap Nexus 7 8GB version. So you can remove the screen from it and place it on yours. If that is out of the question cause of the price it will cost.
You could easily buy a OTG cable and use a mouse on your nexus 7. You can pickup one on Amazon or Ebay for couple dollars. As long you can see what you are clicking on.

[Q] Nexus 7 Screen cracked! Questions.

Okay so it's been less than a f***ing week and I've managed to crack my Nexus 7 32GB 3G. Hell yeah. Fell on a bathroom ceramic tile from 4 foot high and the corner bit chipped off. The entire touch screen works though, it's just the corner bit cracked.
SO ANYWAYS! I have a few questions for those smart guys out there that know about displays.
First of all, I've found out from the internet, that because the LCD and the Digitiser are glued together, I'd need to buy them together. Otherwise known as a Nexus 7 Display Assembly.
Few questions:
1) If I buy a display assembly from ebay for example, will it be of less quality than ASUS's original screen, or will it probably just be a part from ASUS anyways?
2) If I do buy this display assembly, will it still have the same number of Pixels as the original screen?
3) Will it have the same brightness, same touch responsiveness, same all that **** as the original screen?
If not, I may consider just repairing directly from ASUS, so...
4) How much does it cost in pounds(£) to repair the N7 Screen all in, taking into account my shipping fees from the UK?
Seriously need someone who has any experience of this whatsoever
I'm considering if I should repair this with the 3rd party screen and sell it privately if it's not the same quality, then buy a brand new one for myself. What's your guys thoughts on this? I really need some of your expert advice
I JUST replaced the screen on my nexus. I bought the display assembly from powerbookmedic.com, and the tools I needed from iFixit.com. All in all, it cost me around $200 in the States. The repair process was pretty easy, and the screen looks and functions exactly the same as the original screen. My only suggestion would be to make sure you have some good adhesive. I have a little screen lift now because the adhesive lost its traction when I took the cracked screen off the upper casing. Good luck!

Huh? Adhesive? We have to add adhesive? I thought adhesive was only to the digitiser + the lcd screen? I thought that it already comes assembled when you buy the part, because apparently you have to buy it together? If it isn't used for digitiser/lcd screen, then what did you use adhesive for?
The digitizer is indeed fused to the glass, but the silver ring you see around your screen is also fixed to the glass with adhesive, and that part doesn't come with the LCD/digitizer assembly.
The screen affixed itself to this upper casing on mine okay, but I do have about a millimeter or so of screen lift now which I didn't have before.

The best way to attach the new display is to use very thin two sided tape. you cut it in 1/8 inch strips. Apple it all the way around the bezel. then with a sharp knife run it along the inside bezel. Pay close attention to the thin bezel area on the left side ({where screen lift occurs) To be sure you do have it perfect in that area.. Ithe screen face down on cloth . Push the bezel onto the sticky tape (with film removed of course.. Turn device over and put back together.. LEAVING OUT THE TWO CENTER SCREWS or leave then very loose on the left side.(if you have a newer model of nexus these screws will be gone anyway). I have done many phone /tablet screens . If you can get it apart and back together you can replace the screen assembly..
No real need to send it to someone else nexus is easy to dissemble reassemble
Good Luck... Buy a full working 8 gb from ebay for 150.00 might be your best best....
Any clue How to detach the broken glass\digitazer\lcd from this aluminiun bezel?
I recently broke my screen as well. I saw on ebay only 2 options. First option is a screen only for about $50 which doesn't look like it will do anything for me. You the second option is a digitizer for around $300. $300 clearly exceeds the cost of a brand new device so that wouldn't make any sense at all. Even $200 doesn't make sense as I can buy a 8gb device for that and swap screens. I have the 16gb model. Does anyone have any cheaper sources for screen/digitizer that make economic sense?
Thanks,
Dan

It seems pretty pointless to me why you posted that in response to my comment about the chinese website because
a) It was a chinese website... I just needed some help because of the language lol
b) It seems we're only interested in the screen which is what was being suggested... not the a full device like you said lol
c) Your price is $179... his price for the screen was ~$120... so even if I was to harnass only the screen in your one... I'm still at a loss.. lol
Thanks for the try though!
Actually $179 for an entire new (refurbished) nexus 7 with 16gb more storage than mine is a very tempting option. I may choose to do that vs spending almost the same to import a screen from China, have to go through the hassle of installing it myself and hopefully do it properly and have it look clean and factory. If I did that then I could still hang on to my broken one in hopes that in 6 months or so the screen prices might drop to a more reasonable price.

[Q] Nexus 7 3G screen replacement

Hello everyone,
I seem to have come across an issue that no one on the Internet has run into (I've searched Google for days trying to find someone who had the same experience as me). What happened: I cracked the screen of my brand new Nexus 7 3G tablet. What I did: I phoned the official Asus service/repair place, and asked about how much it would cost to repair it. They replied that it would cost 242 euros for the repair (VAT tax included). Considering that this is almost as much as a new tablet, I thought I'd try to repair it myself using parts, however I couldn't find any site selling the screen assembly for the 3G variant.
What I ended up doing: I got a cheap 8GB Nexus 7 and tried to take the screen assembly from it and use it on my own tablet. The shocking conclusion: It's not compatible. The screws that fix the assembly to the rest of the device are placed in different spots, and the shape of the assembly itself is incompatible. I could have tried to pry the screen off of the assembly and glue it to the 3G's one, but that goes way beyond my skill and knowledge and honestly I didn't want to risk ruining a second device.
Searching Google and a variety of other sites has yielded no answers, and I can't find a screen assembly made for the 3G variant anywhere (there are sites like eBay that list screen assemblies for Nexus 7, but my suspicion is that they are for the WiFi variant only and thus, incompatible.
So I've come to ask this: Is there anywhere I can find a screen assembly for the 3G variant? There seems to be absolutely no information on the Internet regarding this. What else can I do besides paying the obscene amount of money the service is asking for the fix? Honestly I'd rather just throw the tablet away than be ripped off like this.
TL;DR version: Is there any place I can get a screen replacement for the 3G variant of the Nexus 7?
Thank you in advance and sorry for the wall of text.
Take the back cover and logic board from the 3g and put it in the 8gb

I've tried to do that but I ran into the same problem, where the screws on the board differ between the 2 devices, and the frame is different too, so I couldn't fit the board from the 3g device into the wifi one

so did anyone ever find a source for 3g displays? i would like to not have to separate the screen from the frame, but all i can find is the display/digitizer assembly, or display/digitizer with the frame for wifi nexii, which are lacking the 3g antenna and do not have the correct screw threads.
Unfortunately, I gave up searching after running into dead ends for a few weeks. Now my Nexus is tucked away in a drawer, doomed to be abandoned for the foreseeable future. If someone else has had any luck, please post here your experiences.
Thanks.

I have a Nex 7 3G with a broken screen. Replaced it with a regular digitizer for N7 wifi and it works fine. Don't know about the antenna since I don't use the sim card anyway. But that's one way to salvage the tab. Removing the bezel on the N7 8gb is not that hard. Heat it up around the edge with a heatgun at 500 degrees for 30 seconds and just peel it off the digitizer or wedge a guitar pick in between and slice it off the touchscreen. You can use a hairdryer instead for a bit longer.

And how would one put the new digitizer assembly in the frame? Would a special glue be needed, or something?

Any kind of glue that works on plastic and glass is fine so long as it remains flexible after curing time. A strong double-sided tape is an alternative. Some people just preserve the original tape on the bezel. I personally found it to be too weak once used.
i ordered a screen from aliexpress. came relatively quick, including more than enough double-sided sticky stuff, three (!) screen protectors, screwdrivers, a plastic lever, guitar pick thingy. managed to break the new screen while putting it in the old frame cos i heated the frame a bit too much so it got warped at one corner...
Wrongly ordered wifi only version full display set

Hmmm. It might be caused by a difference in how the actual screen works for both models (wifi and 3g). But at the same time it can be an issue with one of your connectors (they are easily damaged even when you're careful), I had a problem with the LCD flex cable connector on my tablet when I first changed my screen. It looked very corrupted when I powered it on and was really worried about the screen itself. I bought a replacement cable from ebay and it turned out okay for me.
@kendong2 and all.
My nexus 7 2013 LTE's screen got cracked. I am getting the nexus 7 2012 led screen online. Shall I but it? Will it be compatible with nexus 2013 LTE?
It definitely won't be compatible. You should find a screen made for the 2013 LTE model.
nope.

which is hard to find. lte and wifi have different screen bevels, which is glued to the glass. in theory removable, in reality i have tried twice to seperate the two and failed both times...

that would be a good start.
the best way to replace broken glass on nexus 7 2012 3g is to buy digitizer with out lcd (i.e only touchscreen glass) you should order the correct one this can be done by noting the serial number of touchglass mine touch glass serial number is ME307TG and replacing it with broken glass

[Q] Digitizer replacement

So i was out in the garden and i dropped my Nexus!
The glass for the digitizer has cracked but the screen is ok and i can still use the tablet. It responds to my touch and the screen still looks ok so its just the outside glass that is cracked. I have tried to find somewhere to source a new digitizer from so i could fix the tablet myself, but i am coming up short all the time. I can find how to do open up the tablet and how to swap a new digitizer etc but no place to buy a digitizer.
Does anyone out there have any experience of buying a new digitizer and if so where and how much money is it?
I believe it is about $270 to have it fixed by samsung in the states, i have a friend i could send it to but im based in Ireland so if someone in the UK has any advice that would be great also!
Thanks for your help!
Seems to be extremely rare. Maybe they'll show up when the Note 10.1 2014 comes out?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
yea it looks like due to the rarity that you must send your device to samsung and let them handle it.
Its worth it so i guess il pay the $270
Thanks
Cracked my digitizer too, but it's in the corner and is not visible without looking at a real oblique angle. As it's just as accurate (tested with Quill and also Sketchbook Pro with narrow stylus), I'm not going to worry about it.
Wonder how many get broken and the owner never knows?

Price For Nexus 7 W/ Cracked Screen

I have a 2013 Nexus 7 with 16 GB of memory. A few weeks ago, I dropped the unit and cracked the screen; however, the crack is very small and doesn't affect the screen whatsoever. ( It's at the bottom left-hand corner.)
So, my question is this: How much could I sell it for? I've tried to compare prices using eBay, but most of the units with cracked screens have much worse cracks than on my unit.
I included pics below for reference.

A unit with cracked screen is bought only for the rest of the components (if somebody needs them) I don't think you expect somebody will use it as is ? How cracked the screen is irrelevant, you are lucky to get any thing for it (most will buy a unit with a working screen and something else dead as screen is the most likely part to break, and also probably the most expensive part to replace).

Most people buy cracked screen devices for other parts, or if the cost of the replacement screen + the used device is less than the cost of buying a new unit outright. Personally, I do not care if it is cracked a little or a lot; either way I'll be replacing the screen, so I will always choose the cracked screen listing that is cheapest, considering what else is damaged and would need replacing. Keep in mind that it's probably just easier for them to replace the LCD and the digitizer all at once so they don't have to fart around with separating them and what not.
Remember, when you're selling used items, they're usually worth a lot more to you than they will be worth to other people (like for example, my 2002 Ford Explorer is only valued at $3,000, but it's worth way more to me than that, so I will just keep it instead of trading it in).
