So, finally my nexus 7 will be delivered on Tuesday. I'm neither new to android, nor to the world of nexus (Nexus S), but I don't have any experience with this piece of hardware. My first step will be rooting it, but are there any must-do things? Like on Nexus S Voodoo, NStools, etc. I know, there is no voodoo sound for nexus 7 (sigh...). I consider myself a poweruser, flashing, adb won't frighten me, so pretty much every customization is interesting for me which can give me even better user experience.
Thanks, and I'm very excited to be part of the n7 community!

Spend some time reading and searching, start with the stickies. Post to an existing related thread rather than start a new one for the same thing. :good:
Might I suggest a ROM? I have had my N7 since July 20 and this is the best I have found.
It has KingBeatZ and flash built in.
Enjoy your new device.

I'm using Nova since its beta version, wouldn't use anything else.
When I read 'pimp my rom', i thought you were joking, never even heard of it, but most definitely will try on my Nexus S before the n7 arrives.

Seems interesting, I'm sure that stock ROM won't stay for long, first to try will be this!

I don't understand why does it annoy You. I was looking for some advice to have a nice and easy start with the n7, wasn't posting stupid things to the development section. I thought general section is a good place for it, to spare me few hours of reading, if anyone cares to answer at all. I already got some nice suggestion how to start, and thank you for that.
If this thread hurts anyone in any way, let it closed or moved by a moderator.
Not one nexus s general threads were opened only to say farewell, when they sell their phones to get an other one, i don't see how is my thread any worse than those.
Look at using wugfresh toolkit 1.6.2, its well explained, can view it on YouTube. That will root, unlock and install a great very easy to use recovery image twrp. just a matter of flashing roms/kernels from recovery, easy peasy. Don't forget to take nandroid backups, titaniuim backup for apps backups is the best by far.
Take a look at the following to greatly enhance sound (which is dodgy with stock)

Right there is the problem. No one is paid to be here and no one is here to "spare you a few hours of reading." This is a self-service forum, not a help desk. Drop the entitlement attitude and do your own work. Most everything you need to know is in here, and if it isn't THEN ask. Is that too hard to understand? It's not whether the thread "hurts anyone in any way," it's about not clogging the forum with threads that can be answered by you doing a little work on your own. You said you weren't a noob, so you should know that this is how XDA operates.

I will stop here, and won't answer to that, or it'll never end.
Some did actually help, others shouldn't waste their time answering me. I was politely asking for suggestions, because it's worked that way on nexus s threads. Someone had a question, others answered, even if it was about rooting or flashing, which has been covered million times. If there was a thread about the same problem, we posted the link to there, he got help, moderators closed the thread. I searched and didn't find the right thread to ask my Q, so I opened one. I didn't mean any trouble, and also some people actually answered. I was excited to get my n7, and wanted to know more about it, now I'm discouraged.

My Nexus One will be here tomorrow, and I am wondering what the Pro's and Con's of rooting are.
I've rooted before. I had a G1, but I bricked it, accidentally. Won't stop me from rooting the Nexus, but just give me some reasons why.
I obviously know about cooked roms, etc. I've read about the Desire rom with Sense UI, is it worth it?
Just want your input.
The "search" function of the forums is a great feature. I've seen several threads about this very subject already.
Its definitely worth it! I enjoyed the phone stock, but when i rooted and went with cyanogen 5053. I couldnt happier. I thought the phone was fast already, but with the ROM, its a step above!
And plus some apps from the market are only for rooted phones. SetCPU (underclocking app) is one of them, and has helped me out with battery life. moderate use, i got about 18 hours yesterday with still 35% left on the battery.

This is exactly why I don't post alot.
@stuff: I rooted my n1 and flashed cyanogen 5053 and gotta say it's alot faster! If your the kind of guy that gets alot of apps and games like me there is another feature of rooted phones called apps2sd. Apps2sd allows you to set a partition size of your choosing on your sd card for use of storing installed apps and games. That way you are not limited to the internal phone memory. Also as h2opoloplyr_11 stated there are some apps that require your phone to be rooted. Thats all I can think of right now as I am new to android and the n1 but I'm sure there are more reasons and more reasons to come as devs get creative.

It has nothing to do with getting our post counts up and everything to do with having a clean, uncluttered and efficient forum. No one likes to see the same questions asked every few days. The point of a forum is for it to serve as a repository of information to help and educate future enthusiasts. This guy isn't special and somehow entitled to create another redundant thread instead of using the search function like the rest of us do.. Not to mention he said in his original post that he rooted his G1.

Welcome
Like all ....welcome the above posts have provided links, remember a couple of things, Go slow at first before changing up the phone... get used to the phone. Look at the apps here and on the android market
Look at the development section in the Vibrant forum and read alot of the posting and links about the custom ROMs. The people who made them are superior to the service provider developers.
Once you are comfortable with your background/reference education then, start modifying the phone. You are going to find this is SUCH a good phone to customize, and way user friendly than others I have used in the past. Good luck, and welcome
Welcome +1!
We're here to help as long as the question hasn't been posted 15x10^n times =) Reading is integral to learning more about your phone. Peek into the dev forum but don't post any questions in there unless directly related to a ROM you've flashed (and even then search the thread for your answer [there's a search thread button at the top of the page]).
There are many good people on the forum even when the get short tempered due to "failure to read" syndrome.
Congratulations on a wise purchase, your phone is only going to get better (we've got some great devs ).

Hi,
I saw one thread where someone mentioned that franco's kernel needs to be installed over stock kernel.
However, franco's thread doesn't mention that. So, can I simply install franco's kernel over the CM10.1 kernel?
Any steps or links would be appreciated.
Thanks
Yes you can install it over the cm10.1 kernel.
Yes, in Franco's OP, he states that his kernel is compatible with CM. You just need to flash it and it replaces the CM kernel. If you update CM to a new nightly, you'll need to flash the Franco kernel again.

How exactly is that supposed to be a troll? It's simply raising awareness that toolkits lead to no good. By telling people that toolkits aren't any good and they actually invest 10-25 minutes sitting down and reading a stickied post and following it step-by-step is well-worth it. It's even more important than a lecture in class that people will most likely fall asleep through or not pay attention especially if you plan on tinkering your phone with custom ROMs / kernels / recoveries.
It's a basic fundamental of flashing. Using a toolkit gets you from Point A to B. But what if you need to go back because you forgot something on the way? You ask a question. But if you were at Point A and read all the directions and did it step-by-step as you go to Point B. Well, you won't be so confused on how you got there! Guess it's true that technology is outsmarting us

Technology is great. It really is. But what's the point in doing something when you don't know the background behind it and how exactly it's done? It doesn't take a rocket scientist to install basic ADB environment and type some commands that you won't even have to remember. They're on the internet. There's a reason why someone posted that guide on how to do it. It's imperative and is stickied for a reason.
I'm a troll with 1200+ thanks. I must be doing a good job trolling the Q&A forums? You're a new member, Welcome to XDA. But if I am a troll, then you don't know the other side of it because there are a lot worse people than myself. Just use the search feature before asking things. Especially if it's in the FAQ of a OP post. as it does say,

Go do some searching, and look for some that fits your needs, and then try a few. In the process, you will learn more about your device too.

I bet 90% (or more) of all "Help me!" type posts can be resolved with those few threads. Maybe another 5% need to be directed to another thread or two, and only the last 5% or so actually require more information than what has already been posted. If people would follow the XDA rules, search, and read what is easily available, most of them wouldn't have problems in the first place...much less need to make posts about them time after time. This forum has evolved nicely and people have taken their time to put together guides, solve problems, and create helpful posts. It is a slap in the face of those people when others don't take the time to read the information they made available. I see it all of the time, people saying, "but this is Q&A, I should be allowed to ask questions yadayadayada...). For some reason, to them, Q&A means I don't need to search, read, or learn, I can just ask a question that has been asked 20 times already (usually still on the first page) and people must flock to me with easy answers on silver platters! Of course, that is assuming they even put the question in the Q&A forum to start with. For some reason, they think they are above the rules or they are so special the rules don't apply to them. Q&A (according to XDA) exists to help AFTER someone has already searched and read on their own...not as a substitute for doing so. And saying, "but I searched", when it is obvious that no searching or very little searching was done only makes them a liar as well.
At most, people should only need to be directed to this information (existing threads). If they choose to ignore this help or if they think they are too important to take the time needed to read and learn...too bad. Fortunately, most accept the help and take advantage of the information, others, well I guess they just need to sit around, all butt-hurt, with their bricks.
And to those that get butt-hurt...No, I'm not a Mod and I'm not affiliated with XDA, I just follow the rules that I agreed to when I signed up...just like everyone else is supposed to. DO you?
...and this isn't necessarily directed at the OP, I just happened to say it in this thread.
This is not unique to XDA. People on all forums ask before trying to find the answer. It doesn't matter how much good info is posted, most users want to be spoon fed instead of trying to learn on their own.
Even with power of Google, we see people post " how do I ....." On forums first, when the same query on google will give instant answers.
I can't explain it, but we are all witness to it.

Does not excuse it in the slightest. Anyways I'm happy for the OP choosing the S4 but this is getting quite repetitive and needs to stop :/

+1 to all
A lot of members like Axman have invested many hours in writing great "noob" threads. Very well done and easy to understand. What I never get is why folks invest a lot of money in this phone, and others, and don't want to spend time educating themselves on how to root it and flash roms.

Where have you been? Haven't seen you around in awhile.
Agreed though, getting old. Same issue, different name.

Life, and AOKP has been keeping me quite content but yea long time no see, glad to see familiar faces
Decided I should drop by more to help with these QA threads hahaha
To the OP now, don't think we hate you or anything, it's just you put like NO EFFORT into researching. The QA forum is here to help issues beyond just getting started.

I started those guides thinking that everyone would be talking about flashing roms, whats cool, whats not, and so on, made them so anyone new could even understand, I must have forgotten that people just want to get a phone and start rooting and such, without reading because his buddy said it was cool to root and flash roms, even told him, here go to this site and get roms, and flash them. Then the process starts, a continuous posts of I can't , and it won't questions.
What gets me, you know they are not searching, because the post right above theirs has their problem right in the thread title. Saw one of those yesterday somewhere.
Ka dumb a$s, duh!

Btw .. OP, I am going to apologize for semi hi-jacking your thread. It was wrong. Sorry sir. Seriously.
I think by now the OP has read your Guide, plus others and is now running and enjoying a custom rom--

This! Also I got very intimidated by all the people screaming at me. I did a bunch of research before I asked the question and was still confused hence the question I'm not an xda idiot but the s4 was already very big in modding when I joined whereas the infuse and vivid had just started to get cwm and root when I got them so I grew with the romers I apologize for looking so nooby since reading the first post I now have a auto Loki cwm and root access and am running the Google edition ROM thank you all for the suggestions and links

Glad you got it--
Don't feel bad sometimes we need to vent--nothing personal
I came here in early May from the One S and close to 3.5 years of flashing HTC devices with the advantage of unlocked bootloaders thru fastboot. But, still felt like a noob here--still do--
Odin/Kies/Loki were all new. Esp loki. I have spent hundreds of hours reading probably a couple thousand posts. Still learning. It does take a lot of effort to figure this out for some of us--like me.
But, a good investment as one needs to not only know how but why--to not lose a pricey phone--
Welcome to the S4--Unbelievable Phone--:good:
