[Q] Gotta make my mind up, which rom should I take?? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Alright, so I'm wondering: Which 4.2 rom should I install on the Nexus 7? Thanks!!
UPDATE - Delete this thread, please.

Seat God not another one of these pointless threads. Look through the forum and you'll note that this has been asked and answered multiple times by the thread being summarily locked. Do you also ask others what your favorite food should be?
There is no best rom. Go to the dev forums, read, read some more, and then test drive the ones that pique your interest. Only you can answer the rom question for yourself.

Alright. Delete the thread, then.

ill just close it..
Look op, you didn't commit a mortal sin, but really, as said; there is no best rom. The best ROM is the one that fits YOUR needs, has the look/feel you want, and works best with your apps. Go do some searching, and look for some that fits your needs, and then try a few. In the process, you will learn more about your device too.

Universal development section.

We have a development section for every carrier, how about one for any carrier.
In my vision this would currently contain all the efforts of trying to make this possible, and in the future, all universal roms(which we will hopefully have).
Also I feel that this would promote development of a way to do this.
For those who make separate threads in every carrier section because they care enough to do so, wouldn't actually have to do so. What a great way to say thanks!!! (and give them more time to develop the rom instead of posting multiple threads.

Bad idea man. IDK how familiar you are to flashing roms and mods, but it sounds like you know that you can't flash a Sprint rom on an AT&T device (Etc etc). That's great and all, but for everyone that knows how to flash the right rom, there are 20 people who have no idea that a bad flash will brick their phone, and those people would be looking at an "all USA carriers" forum picking the coolest looking rom, not even paying attention to warnings.
Heck, take a look at all the "Omg, I bricked my phone flashing an international rom. Halp me!" threads. There's already a problem, and you have to go to a completely section of the forums to find those. Putting them one click away is just asking for hundreds of whiny "I borked my phone" threads. At least until a one mod fits all method is made standard.
So, no. I don't think it's a good idea. In a perfect world, it would be amazing, development from all carriers would get the same attention, and everyone would be happy. However, we've gotta cater to the lowest common denominator right now. Sorry guy.
I take it neither of you read the forums or xda front-page much?

Just sayin, lol.
fine, ill suggest this poll again when there is a way to have universal roms.
Nice to see my article having an impact lol
Frankly, for now, the best way is to keep them separate. ROM devs can always release them in each forum if they want to make ROMs for all 4 carriers (there can't be that many differences).
Even if a universal ROM method was released, I would still vote to keep them separate. ROMs are, by far, the most popular development in the forums, but you've still got kernels, mods, scripts, etc that won't have universal compatibility. Better to keep em separate as to not confuse people (because we all know someone is gonna release something without specifying which version it's for and someone is gonna flash it) and cause problems.
Maybe if there was a way to make everything universal, maybe. As it stands, I'd rather see a ROM dev simply have to copy/paste his ROM thread across 4 sections rather than have to see [T-Mobile][Sprint][AT&T][Verizon] at the beginning of every thread.
My 2 cents
Why don’t we give this a try?

ROM Comparison thread request

Hey I was wondering if anyone out there was bored/interested enough in making a thread with comparisons of all the ROMs in them I just ordered mine today and I'm noticing that few of the ROMs actually have a "features included" section, so I would love for someone to make one for those of us looking to compare them while waiting for our phone or without having to try them all I know people will say "just try them all" but even just a general impressions thread would be very helpful to a lot of people

why is that???
because you can basically read what each rom is about, you can flash and try, Only you can decide if a rom is good or not.
I've tried a lot of high rated roms and i've hated it. Same goes with kernels. Don't make about thread asking which is the best. Best for what? Performance or battery life? How much will you use the phone etc.
It's really a flash and try. There is no good or bad.

we r not asking for the best, we just wanna know the differences,, thats it.....differences in features and look...thnx
I understand the whole flash and try thing, and if I could I probably would at least try a few But yeah this isn't a "which rom is best" but rather a "what makes this ROM unique"
It's just a simple request if anyone has the time/interest in doing so, I don't want to go onto the ROM pages asking people there what it's all about
I'd like one too! Back when I had my one s I'd always went straight for cyanogen just for pure android..now that it already comes with the phone I'm just wondering if I'm missing anything if I'm not rooting and installing a new rom..
Most ROM threads have a features section or a changelog section detailing what is different or modified. Also, there is a thread that compiles a link to all the available ROMs by category (whether they are CM based or AOSP based, etc).
I recommend going to that thread and then navigating to your ROM of interest to read its description. I highly doubt anyone is willingly to compiles a comparison thread for you because ROMs are constantly changing. If you look at some of the threads, they have no updates and releases every day. By the time someone posts the comparison thread, it will probably be already outdated.
In short, your best option is to read to narrow your choices, then actually try out the options you have on hand.

[Q] First steps with a new Nexus 7

So, finally my nexus 7 will be delivered on Tuesday. I'm neither new to android, nor to the world of nexus (Nexus S), but I don't have any experience with this piece of hardware. My first step will be rooting it, but are there any must-do things? Like on Nexus S Voodoo, NStools, etc. I know, there is no voodoo sound for nexus 7 (sigh...). I consider myself a poweruser, flashing, adb won't frighten me, so pretty much every customization is interesting for me which can give me even better user experience.
Thanks, and I'm very excited to be part of the n7 community!

Spend some time reading and searching, start with the stickies. Post to an existing related thread rather than start a new one for the same thing. :good:
Might I suggest a ROM? I have had my N7 since July 20 and this is the best I have found.
It has KingBeatZ and flash built in.
Enjoy your new device.

I'm using Nova since its beta version, wouldn't use anything else.
When I read 'pimp my rom', i thought you were joking, never even heard of it, but most definitely will try on my Nexus S before the n7 arrives.

Seems interesting, I'm sure that stock ROM won't stay for long, first to try will be this!

I don't understand why does it annoy You. I was looking for some advice to have a nice and easy start with the n7, wasn't posting stupid things to the development section. I thought general section is a good place for it, to spare me few hours of reading, if anyone cares to answer at all. I already got some nice suggestion how to start, and thank you for that.
If this thread hurts anyone in any way, let it closed or moved by a moderator.
Not one nexus s general threads were opened only to say farewell, when they sell their phones to get an other one, i don't see how is my thread any worse than those.
Look at using wugfresh toolkit 1.6.2, its well explained, can view it on YouTube. That will root, unlock and install a great very easy to use recovery image twrp. just a matter of flashing roms/kernels from recovery, easy peasy. Don't forget to take nandroid backups, titaniuim backup for apps backups is the best by far.
Take a look at the following to greatly enhance sound (which is dodgy with stock)

Right there is the problem. No one is paid to be here and no one is here to "spare you a few hours of reading." This is a self-service forum, not a help desk. Drop the entitlement attitude and do your own work. Most everything you need to know is in here, and if it isn't THEN ask. Is that too hard to understand? It's not whether the thread "hurts anyone in any way," it's about not clogging the forum with threads that can be answered by you doing a little work on your own. You said you weren't a noob, so you should know that this is how XDA operates.

I will stop here, and won't answer to that, or it'll never end.
Some did actually help, others shouldn't waste their time answering me. I was politely asking for suggestions, because it's worked that way on nexus s threads. Someone had a question, others answered, even if it was about rooting or flashing, which has been covered million times. If there was a thread about the same problem, we posted the link to there, he got help, moderators closed the thread. I searched and didn't find the right thread to ask my Q, so I opened one. I didn't mean any trouble, and also some people actually answered. I was excited to get my n7, and wanted to know more about it, now I'm discouraged.

You see! He tried recommending you the best and most stable 3 roms of all from his opinion, yet you liked NONE of them. Your "preferences" are different from everyone else's. He likes sense, you don't. He didn't have crashes on tytung's ics, you did. He thinks Sense is fancy and wonderful, you think it's slow and buggy.
It was your fault for making this thread in the first place. That's why the "best rom", "most stable", "fastest rom" ... etc threads are despised and hated.

OH WAIT, YOU CAN'T ANSWER BECAUSE IT'S AN OPINION BASED QUESTION!
Seriously, I'm getting really tired of these best ROM threads. There is no correct answer, and yet you people still create them. All that happens is that they're closed by a mod or they turn into 10 post spam threads where new users open old threads to post questions in the dev forums. If you just wanted the ROM most people use then why not look at the thread view count and post count?
To quote PG101 (I think) 'coming to XDA and asking for the best ROM is like going into a bar full of drunks and asking what's the best drink'.
I wouldn't have posted this if you had admitted in post #6 that you're wrong through Marvlesz and Kameirus's pure logic, but you've somehow tried to justify posting an idiotic question which is quite annoying.

Isnt this an Android Q&A forum. Why is everyone so neurotic about these "best rom" threads? There is a avalanche of information on xda...This i agree...however its very easy to get completely blindsighted by the sheer volume of threads and the "best rom, most stable" etc, are usually shot down very soon after the question is asked.
If one cant offer any guidence or if one gets frustrated by these threads then why click on the thread and why take time to respond negitively instead of just skimming past and ignoring the thread?
I get that it becomes tiresome for seasoned members here to see these threads but please can we not just assume that the posters are just being "Lazy". Its also worth note that is increasingly difficult for new users to post here for fear of upsetting others with their (mostly well intentioned) ill thought out questions..
XDA is such a great source of knowledge and resource and i agree one needs to take the time to read, read and read some more sometimes though we can get lost and sometime are just asking to be pointed in a direction that has benefited others. Ie' a rom thread where the reading will begin b4 flashing
Flashing for the 1st time can be tricky as their is a lot to take in and one can be nervous of the procedure, and if too many of us take it apon ouselves to be the forum police then the the prospect becomes slightly less appealing.
Sorry i dont mean to offend anyone by sounding off but i too am new to much of the flashing roms, and also am guilty of comming to these threads in the hope of finding a majority of agreement on a particular rom. I do understand that it is subjective and one does not fit all. However it can give confidence to new flashees if experienced users can offer recomendations which have been offered here above, which i personally an very greatfull for.
Sometimes we are but sheep and will follow where led.

I do get it. But it doesnt mean it doesnt frustrate me to see the responses in these threads just as it frustrates those who are rattled by the thread even existing who feel the need to jump on and respond.
If it bugs you... you can leave it alone and move on OR you can let the OP know your frustration by refusing to answer the question and telling them to get off XDA. But surely its easier to ignore it?
It honest feels that the forum has become quite arrogant at times especially where "newbs" are concerned. And it can feel at times slightly Elitist (those that Can vs those who need help) with a disregard to anyone who doesnt know where to begin.
One post i read earlier told a FM to "get off the android forum and dont come back" for asking a similar question... How is this helping and how is it got to the point where there are many 'thanks' thumbsup to this sort of response.
I doubt that OP would be back in a hurry but i guess if it stops them asking 'stupid' questions....Theres a pattern forming where some members here who have flashed successfully a few times then become part of this club that pretends to be irritated by 'best rom' threads and i assume it makes them feel superior by responding with negative feedback to ones who genuine are looking for just a point in the right direction. Why not just 'Not Respond' at all??
Its like pack mentality sometimes and thankfully it is a minority of members who are rattled and on the whole XDA is immensely helpful to newcomers who will learn the hard way to never ask "that" question :banghead:

We are members of this community, thus we have to do our best to make it better. We do this by telling people who post such threads about how wrong it is and the correct way of finding "the" rom. But it got out of hand, you can check that for yourself. Every other week, there is a thread asking the exact same thing, i.e "best rom, fastest, stable". Whereas it should be common sense that there is no best in subjective things as Nigel summed it.
Now the problem is that many people think xda is a support site. Here is a quote from a senior member that I couldn't agree more with:

While it is true that you can find help on xda, that doesn't mean it is given on a silver platter. If you can't bother to help yourself, we can't bother to help you. Furthermore, finding a question that a 2-click search could've provided a more-than-satisfactory answer or finding a post that is almost the same as a two-rows-below post is rather very irritating.

That's impossible, if you're asking "what's the best rom", there is no way you're looking for a point in the right direction. Because basically there is no right direction. Some people even try to justify their stupid posts with even more stupid posts.
The HD2 has been out for about 4 years now. NO matter what your problem is, it has a 99% probability it has been asked AND answered before MULTIPLE times. Now if people can't bother to follow the very first rule of the forum rules, they don't deserve to be helped.
When they first registered on xda, they agreed to abide by the terms, rules and conditions. Now if you agree to abide by something and then break that thing, you take full responsibility and deserve everything you get for that breaking.

A common misconception, this is a development forum (hence XDA developers ). Other than this I don't really have anything to add to Marvlesz's post tbh. You have to understand that when I posted that there had been literally three similar threads in a row. When you're posting a thread search results for the same or similar title even come up, so there wasn't any excuse for this thread to have been created. There's a subtle line between not knowing and not trying, and this is the latter.
It's problem to me too... I have 1.5 gb roms on my SD and no one fully work for me =(
Ok so i am aware that my earlier post was ott on my part and can only apologize. Must have been posting through some red mist I admit i jumped in without thinking and was unduely judgemental. Sorry bout that Everyone here esp devs are doing such amazing work for our gadgets to perform at their peaks and i am immensely appreciative of that. I agree with the above that this is first a "Development" forum and can be misconceived by some (myself included ) as somewhere where the answers are uniform and one in the same. However i see this is not the case and opinions to questions such as "whats the best, fastest most stable" etc, are so diverse and if everyone were to give an opinion then i guess these threads would also just get messy and lengthy with NO satifactory conclusion.
Sorry Guys...Really Didnt mean to offend. However i can see how my wording may have done so :banghead:

Hi,
Thanks, I would do the same thing
Arrgh, these threads... at least 2 or 3 a day
@ qpqpqp , do you know the search function
Thanks for the reply but I'm actually hoping for a more direct reply. None of those threads provide an answer. This isn't one of those "What is the best ROM thread?" I'm actually looking for the community input on widely used ROMs. Its an simple objective question that can't be solved by search.

You just repeated yourself.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2046303
That's exactly what all the other dozens of threads asking the exact same question are looking for.
That thread got a total of 15 votes among 10 options and it started in december. It doesn't say a lot.

heres a direct answer for your question.. the most popular roms for the nexus 4 are stock and aosp.
but i suggest that you try out a bunch of different roms, find what you and your device likes, and what fills YOUR needs. after you find yourself the perfect rom, youll want to repeat the process. but this time youll want to find the perfect kernel for your device, the kernel that you and your device likes the best.

how hard is it to open the forum and look at the numbers. you see right away which are frequented and which are not. thats why xda shows em, no? :highfive:
My favorite personally, would have to be Paranoid Android. I've been using it ever since I got my Nexus rooted, and plan on still using PA in the future. Although it doesn't offer as much customization as other ROM's, i don't mind it at all. One of my favorite features about this ROM is pie. It's an alternative to the Nav bar and is way better IMO. In the end, it's user preference. Some don't like PA, and would rather use other ROM's like CM10, or Xylon, but it's all on personal taste. Just try them all out until you find your favorite.

That's just what I was thinking. There are view counts and post counts for a reason.
CM or PA
stop being flipping lazy and so some searching .... smh
What ever ROM you like. Just because a particular Rom is the most "popular" doesn't mean YOU will like it. Try the ones that interest you and decide.
