Custom ROM N4 vs other devices - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I have a question about the custom roms made for the nexus 4 compared to other devices.
Does custom roms for the N4 have 'less' bugs/driver problems compared to other devices? (because manufactures keep them closed, while Google doesn't?).
With other words: making custom roms for the N4 is relativity easy and have minor issues compared to other devices?
I always had HTC, but there are always problems with roms, by the time they get solved, it's already time to buy a new devices. At this point I'm thinking of buying the N4

Bro, unlike HTC or any other OEM, Nexus is open. So making a ROM would be easier. Yes it would have less bugs.

I'm using Xylon stable version and its literally bug free, came from a S2 which had so many issues which would NEVER be fixed, its like a night and day experience

New rom?

I am curious if the nexus 4 will ever see the likes of MIUI or Sense roms or something? Is that is a possibility? I like variety. I came from a G2 so I am used to having several different kinds of roms like this. I know that phone is old and it took me awhile to upgrade. Lol. Just curious.

Miui is impossible right now. The latest miui rom is 4.1.2 based and our firmwares are 4.2 based
Until miui team doesnt update their rom (miui5) to android 4.2 we are out.
Sense porting is incredibly difficult, since has practically nothing to do with aosp, touchwiz, etc...
Enviado desde mi Nexus 4 usando Tapatalk 2
That's barely variety. Almost all ROMs there are cm based and cooked, the rest is leaked, outdated or mashed up, the number of actual/original contemporary ROMs is either zero or very small. I've got an s2, too and I've been in that scene long enough. Nexus is like day and night compared to a legacy ROM scene. The number of ROMs may appear smaller, but that's still the source of pretty much all the features you were enjoying, exception being miui and OEM skins.
What will happen eventually i guess, is that people will start theming roms to look like sense and other ui's.
My first Nexus and i do find rom scene a bit boring compared to OEMs. Although, I'm thoroughly enjoying stability of Nexus custom roms, and since my flashing addiction has gone downhill, I'm ok.
That's the great thing about the nexus being a developers device. If you want it then by all mean make it. Sense will never make it to a none HTC device fully due to needing the HTC framework and lib files which can't be ported. Same with touchwiz. As for MIUI don't even get me started with that lol.

No alot of traffic? Roms?

I'm patiently waiting for my 8.0 to arrive. While doing this I've skimmed through the forums and such gleeming information. The 8.0 has been out since April / May and it seems compared to the other Note products that I've owned (all three of them) the ROM development and general traffic seems to be on the light side.
Not criticizing.
Is this because the devs are waiting for a source to drop? Is this because the majority feel that Samsung has made a solid product (hardware and software) that there is little to adjust or complain about the product (which is a good thing) Or the last not so good scenario that thus is not a very popular device because of odd size, design, price point, economy, cheaper alternatives, waiting for something better?
I don't want to do the usual "Dude, thus place is Dead! Why?" Lol.
I'm interested in what others who have been here longer feel about this.
Thanks.

I just got my note 8.0 (international version n5100) few days ago. Although you are right there isn't much development going on. The problem is that most of the developers are in USA. The US version of the Note 8.0 (at&t) and the Canadian version have yet to have root. So that is why you don't see much activity around here. Once the At&t version can be modified. I would expect more developers to show up.
Best buy and such is just selling the WiFi version anyways sent they?
I guess that brings me to another question from what I've noticed: are people buying this mainly as a 3g device to use as a phablet? AFAIK mine will just be a WiFi only.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using Tapatalk 2
Yes Best Buy is most likely selling the wifi version unless they made you sign a contract that is a safe bet.
There are a bunch of Note 8.0 which makes me believe we will most likely need another sub forum once the North American Note 8.0 have a development scene. Since they have slightly different hardware. earpiece removed etc.
Since the At&t model only have data no phone or SMS. Most people have either the LTE model or the wifi model. Only the wifi model has a development scene.
Custom roms would be nice for some fun but I'm very happy with stock rooted. It's a solid device.
Sent from my GT-N7100
I'm all for custom roms....But, I like the stock rom very much. I chose the 5100 because it offers everything in one package. If I need to make a phone call, no problem. Send a text, I'm covered, plus wifi. Would loved to have had LTE but with T-Mobile 3G+ I don't feel rained on!! And yes I live in a refarmed area. For me, living in the U.S., the 5100 3G is the best option. In other countries that were offered LTE (voice+data) that would be the way to go.
The reason I go with Samsung in general is because I don't want to have to flash anything custom. Over the 5 years or so of owning Android, I've been through a lot of devices, and I can't begin to imagine how much time I've wasted flashing, restoring, backing up, etc, etc. There are more important things to life than customizing your gadgets. In short, I don't care whether this place is dead, active, or whether there is a single custom ROM or kernel out there for this device. Samsung provides a solid device that performs well, and they are about as up to date with updates as can be reasonably expected. I have no complaints.
Just as an aside, I've flashed many custom ROMs and kernels to my previous Galaxy S3. All of them made my performance and battery life far worse than stock, and most of them had serious issues with their themes.
That's maybe because you made poor choices on your Rom selections. It's definitely true there are nightmare roms out there.

No way man. I've always had the same issues with custom ROMs over the years. Stock has been the best since ICS hit. Most custom ROMs except the ones that are modified stock have issues.

Well I agree with that. As far as Samsung goes it is true that you're better off staying on something touchwiz based. This is true. All the CM and aosp stuff is plagued with problems. You're right about that. I actually like touch wiz ROMs especially for the note 2. Looks like the same with note 8. Once you lose the spen features you kinda lose the whole point of havin a Samsung device with spen. You're right
Sent from my SGH-T889 using Tapatalk 2
Personally I just care about root because it opens up a lot of useful apps. Otherwise I haven't had issues with stock ROMs.
Sent from my GT-N5110 using Tapatalk 2
I wish more no pc root options were available. Tried framaroot so I could install a few apps and small mods but haven't had any luck. I think stock rooted with small mods is best for the note. I had a transformer TF300T that I highly moded to get it to run at the speeds I now have on the note 8.0.
I think over time and with 4.2.2 or 4.3 the note 8.0 should see more in the development area.
Sent from my Note 8.0 N5110 16GB
Rooting is always the first step for me and although custom roms are a handy shortcut there are many Xposed modules to help you to customise your device yourself.
Galaxy Note 8.0 Build JDQ39.N5120XXCMG7 / Baseband N5120XXBMD9 on Telstra LTE
Thanks for opening this thread! The lack of custom Roms was one of the first things I recognised after buying the Note 8. I came over from a NExus 7 (2012) and as was stated here before, modding just took a lot of time from me. First it was fun to try out CM, AOKP Paranoidandroid etc. and these guys really have some good features. But I never kept a ROM longer than a few weeks because they were all horrible slow - still better than stock though. In the end I realized that it was the device itself that kept getting slower due to hardware issues and the custom ROMs just eased the problem because of the wipe I did every time. My phone is a HTC Evo 3d that also needs a lot of attention due to (in my opinion) horrible stock ROM.
Now after reading this thread and thinking about my experiences with the Note so far I have to admit I'm pretty happy with it. I Also don't care that it is still on 4.1 because 4.2 on the Nexus was just a pain with all the bugs and extra features were rare and useless for me. with 4.3 it seems to be the exact same story. So for now it's okay. Especially since I installed my favorite launcher after trying out TouchWIz
I just hope to see a good Android 5 ROM someday with S-Pen functions and so on, but that story isn't written yet

So what are the differences between the n5100 and the i467?
telephony capability
LTE radio
ear speaker
ability to act as wifi hotspot
Anything other differences?
I like touchwiz. But I want cyanogenmod. I used cm on my s3 for more than a year.
I hope cm will be available for n5100 soon.

its a fantastic device, man...my wife has a 10.1, and its nothing like this tablet; you can one hand this guy, much smoother, and I am running CM 10.2 on it now, and its fast and smooth...great for taking everywhere, and, its more "phone like" than any other tablet...not tons of developement, but there are a couple of nice TW roms, both 4.1.2 and 4.2, plus now with cm 10.1 and 10.2, there is something for everyone!

Does the Spen work with the CM roms?
Steve

will G2 get custom 4.4 based roms?

right now I'm still torn between G2 and Nexus 5, while G2 clearly has a rather superior hardware I've been spoiled with the look from pure 4.4 experience also unfortunately the Nexus isn't available yet on my country.
but from what I've seen there is no 4.4 based rom for G2 too, the question is, will it happen? specifically though I really want the kitkat version of Paranoid Android, will it come to G2? or is it actually more sure will come faster to Nexus 5?
It will eventually. But no manufacturers will gets it as fast nexus devices. If on time updates and rom is your main concern then your choice is limited.
-LG G2
I'm torn about this too, interested in the G2's battery life but only if I can get AOSP very smoothly and with no fuss. I wonder how stable CM11 nightlies will be for the first few months.

yeah, gsmarena battery test on nexus 5 kill my enthusiasm with it, however if it still a looong way for G2 to get 4.4 based rom then I'll just get nexus.
I know that everyone says that Nexus devices get updates the soonest, and while that's completely true and valid, to me it doesn't feel that way. I usually wait for CM or AOKP to put out stable builds before I upgrade, and by then they've built for every device and my neighbor's cat. Heck, it's been two weeks since 4.4 came out, and so far the Nexus 5 and the Nexus 7 officially have it, while in the mod community, CM11 is already out for other devices in a useable form. So, certainly official support for Nexus devices is quickest, but practically all the devices in the mod community get updates pretty quick.
That being said, the Nexus 4 has no official 4.4, but we on LG G2 are going to get CM11 very soon.
is this phone really get the support for at least 2 years from LG or they will just leave G2 behind with only one/ two update provided like what they did on their flagship phone in the past like LG Optimus 2x
I'm pretty sure we'll get a working PA 4.0 (KitKat 4.4) pretty soon. Houston already has his version of PA 3.99 up and running for us and he was just made a member of the PA Team the other day. It's just a matter of time, guys, be patient. . Houston kicks ass, too!

Problem for Canadians is there's almost no support at all for D803s. Huge drawback of so many variants of G2.

It's so true. I'm disheartened by the lack of availability for the d803, however don't posses the skills to do something about it. I've started down the long road of trying to learn for myself so I'm not just one of those people that sit idly by and complain... but like I said it's a long road and it feels like I'll probably own a G4 by the time if figure out how to bring ROMs over to the G2 lol
I was obsessing over getting the nexus 5 for as long as it was leaked it was coming out. Once it was confirmed it wasn't coming to Verizon I thought I would settle for the G2. Let me tell you that now I have had it for 2 weeks and tried every ROM out there so far. I can happily say I didn't settle at all. Great phone. Came from gnex. Roms are coming out. Not at nexus speed but they are out there. Waiting for pa 4.0 but I am rocking a ROM from the droid Razer forum not xda called vallidus by GZ ROMs. Lots of functions. Everything you could want. Build is 4.3.1 base. Absolutely stable.

Seeing how they are so similar again, like N4 and LGOG were, I would buy the G2 for its added battery size alone. Also, Houston has the Canadian version and is currently hard at work on PA 4.0. Just be patient.:thumbup:

will it work on the international version of G2?
Hosers, eh?
Well, my take is that the Nexus is so similar to the G2 that we can't help but get lots of dev support (ie, so many of us who didn't want to wait for the Nexus and/or changed our minds at the last minute the same way a Chevy dealer puts a Corvette in the showroom to sell you a Malibu). We might not see as much as the G4 or the One, but Chrysler still sells a ton of cars even though they are not Ford or GM. I came from a Skyrocket which was just different enough from the S2 not to use the same roms, but close enough that it still has (unofficial) CM/PA/AOKP/PacMan support plus half a dozen hobbyist roms two years out.
Will we get "Official LG" Android 4.5 six minutes after the Nexus? No. Will I be stripping the factory rom and bloat off my phone the instant I get home from vacay (and off this stupid mac) and NEVER looking back? Absolutely.
And to the 803 guys and gals, I make no claims to be an expert by any means, but from the little reading I have done so far, the main difference between the models seems to be in the bootloader not the rom, so if that's the case you're bound to have someone up there willing to compile CM or whathaveyou for the 803... it just might not be "official."

*off topic* CM and PAC are both official for the rocket, so is Carbon and Slim Bean. That community is awesome and I still find myself visiting it daily. Team chopsticks already have a pretty stable alpha 2 version of cm11 up for the ol' 727 and, you're right, there are a ton of hobbyists in that community that have brought just about every rom you could want.
I'm just worried about getting myself into a situation where AOSP ROMs aren't working out or have problems. What's the main diff between T-Mobile (D801), AT&T (D800), and international (D802)? Does international work on US LTE? Does the Loki patch and CM 10.2 absolutely work on the T-Mobile version?
People.. Quit worrying it will happen

Greetings[emoji4][emoji4], its not turning into a nexus 5 UNTIL you can flash custom Roms that are compatible with your G2 aswell as being compatible with the Nexus 5 already, when I was rooted, I flashed Cyanogenmod 11/Paranoid Android/Mahdi Rom,etc, and I saw my phone as a Nexus 5 or even better, but yes you can flash Custom Roms that are compatible with the Nexus 5 for your G2.[emoji6][emoji6]

Thats not correct. If you flash CM11 or PA on G2 it will be the same and it will look same as that ROM on Nexus 5 (since they have similar hardware). But you cant flash .zip file of Nexus 5 ROM on G2 because you will probably brick your phone.

I'm well aware that CM11 and PA can use Google Now Launcher, and I'm aware that Paranoid Android is based on Cyanogenmod, and that their both AOSP based Roms, because I've tested both of these Custom Roms, I wasn't telling him to flash a zip file of the Nexus 5 Rom, because it will(not probably) brick his phone, because the Nexus 5 runs different(not by much) hardware compared to the G2.
What I quoted in my last post stating "its not turning into a nexus 5 UNTIL you can flash custom Roms that are compatible with your G2 aswell as being compatible with the Nexus 5." i was stating that he can flash a Custom Rom that makes your G2 look and act like you would have a Nexus 5, not that he can flash a Nexus 5 Rom, I just want you to understand my last statement towards his question and this one aswell.

EDIT: I know how to be a begginer (although I had Android devices for 3 years so far), G2 seems like kinda specific device. Loki bootloader, especially after nexus device is something completly strange, then thoose black and white lines... I had to spend few hours to read all stickies to understand some things.

While not a total noob, I'm still learning. I've rooted several android devices.. HTC evo shift, 3d, sensation, nexus 7, 2x nexus 4 and B&N Nook HD+. Currently have a Nexus 4. I'm considering getting the G2 since it is very close in specs to the Nexus 5 but can be bought for about $100 less. Hence, my question. I realize that once you put a custom ROM on any device, it will look just like others' with that ROM but I was originally curious about being able to use Nexus 5 ROMs with the G2 since the specs are almost identical. My fear is that developer support for this device will wane, where support is constant with Nexus devices.
Thanks again for the help.

I personally don't think developer support for the LG G2 will wane, there's still developer support for the Galaxy S3, I'm guessing since the Nexus Line is aimed more for developers(seeing the Nexus Line is really Developer Based Phones), is why its so popular (besides the fact of it running pure stock android, and not having any custom android skins on top of it, and receiving updates quicker than any other non-nexus device) and it's support won't wither anytime soon, because they're so many developers out there that most likely have a nexus device and are testing apps and Roms on, I'm guessing.[emoji4][emoji4][emoji4]

Question on Custom Roms

Always wanted a Nexus but availability issues has stopped me. The 6P will be the first Nexus to launch locally and I really want to get it. However, I've heard ParanoidAndroid(fav. custom rom) is no longer in the scene and are working with OnePlus now. What other customs roms are still operating other than Cyanogen? Which would be recommended for Nexus devices? I know PA was more or less exclusively on Nexus/OnePlus devices.

Nice, why didn't I think of that. I suppose CM is the most popular rom for N6?
Cm would be popular but most ROMs are going to layers instead of cm theme engine as it's native in marshmallow on nexus ... So a lot of ROMs like slim and pure nexus are very popular
6.0 also has native multi task
Pa still has builds but not much going on there as a lot of their big things never got merged

I made my purchase the first day in which preorders became available, it'll arrive by October 27-28. Marshmallow will be coming out this week, so I'll be working on Marshmallow when I have the time, Nexus 6 (2014) should start receiving builds and once the 6P arrives (I selected 1 day shipping), I'll start working on making the ROM compatible with N6P which shouldn't be too difficult.
Hope to see you there

Hope to see you there

The 6P will be the first Nexus we will be getting locally but I don't think it will be as fast as the US. I suspect builds will already be out before I get it. Looking forward!:good:
@sacredsoul the roms and development will be endless for 3 to 4 years maybe for the huawei 6p. Endless!
Questions about warranty: Will we lose our warranty status when we root it or flash roms? - SG member here too, waiting for Huawei Singapore to release it

Slim to none....i think they don't even have a phone officially running lollipop ....it never got to n6 because their phones were running kitkat and n6 never had a build of kitkat ...don't hold your breath for it anytime soon

Rom affect camera functionality Google intended?
I'm new to rooting, does installing a new ROM affect the camera functionality and quality the way google have wanted it from a nexus phone?

No, and its app is available on Google Play. Welcome to XDA!
Definitely looking forward to getting back to using custom roms after being unable to with my last 2 phones having a locked bootloader (so they were limited).
Really disappointed Android Pay won't work with Custom Roms, but holding out hope someone will find a workaround.
Chroma and BeansTown(purenexus) ROM would probably be the best top two for customization and stability. And it looks like Chroma ROM will be coming for N6P =]
