Getting back to stock rom? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I kept flashing different roms, but it is time to return to our ol' trust worthy stock version of 4.2.
The question is, how do I do that? I'm not as new, but it's not really my profession either.
Any suggestions?

Or you can just flash Stock ROM with root.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2010887

Google has deleted the factory images from the developer site...
here is the FACTORY IMAGE LINK where someone downloaded it when it was already there
https://docs.google.com/uc?export=download&confirm=no_antivirus&id=0B_zuNWpIf1ujNlFDVnZ3dzg2WEU
and here is the TUTORIAL to get back to factory settings...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2010312
you will have to wait till someone upload an odex stock rom.... others you see named stock rom are deodexed and are not factory images.

Noob Questions

Hi there,
I've had the galaxy s2 for about 24 hours and am very impressed with it.
I've rooted the device and had over clocked to 1.54ghz was getting scores of 4,000 plus on quadrant.
I wanted to look at some custom ROMS, so have installed the villain release. However, I think I've done something wrong somewhere, as the phone feels slower and the quadrant scores are 50% of what they were as stock (i'm sure this is down to me and not the ROM, not meaning to cast doubt on an awesome piece of work)
I'd like to return the phone completely to stock, so I wiped the user data in recovery mode and tried to reinstall the stock firmware, but the device is now stuck in a loop?
Any advice on how I can get my device back to stock?
Thanks for your time.
Buckley.
You need the read the VillianRom thread on the development section. It explains how to return to stock properly there.

Yep. It's fairly simple. Did you install XWKE7 CF-Root kernel though? You should do that after installing.
To revert to stock,
turn off phone
hold volume up, home, power to enter recovery. Wipe data partition
Hold power to turn off phone
Open ODIN and enter download mode, flash stock ROM
should work fine
Whoops no I didn't the root kernel...
I know i'm just embarrassing myself now, but do you have a link to the file?
I followed the steps you mentioned to take the handset back to stock..
Gathered I should have been installing this...
I9100BUKE1_I9100BUKE1_I9100VODKE2.TAR?
That's when it started looping..
Looks like I have a lot of reading up to do ha..
Thanks for the quick replies..
I have installed the kernel as suggested.
Sorry to be pain but can anyone supply a link to a stock rom, i'm on vodaphone uk?
I have searched and can't find one, thanks..

Just use an unbranded one from intratech's thread.
For CF-Root kernel, just go to the dev forum and search "CF-Root" and get the XWKE7 one
and Pulser has a sticky for this

[Q] Tried to downgrade to MF9 after upgrading to MJA.

So... I did the stupid thing. I attempted to go back to my old MF9 backup through TWRP after upgrading to MJA, and now my wifi won't even turn on. I've been trying to figure this out for a few hours now, trying various fixes. I've tried to use ODIN to flash back to complete stock, but that just destroys my phone until I flash a recovery through ODIN. Everything I've seen on the forums so far has made it seem as though there is no hope since Samsung added in Knox.
I'm sorry if this has been resolved elsewhere, but I've literally been searching the General. Q&A, Android Development, Original Android Development, and Developer forums for several hours today with no luck. Can someone please help me with this? I just want my phone to be fully functional again...
EDIT:
Here's the deal; my main problem was with Wifi not working. The Stock MF9 Kernel was not working, but the 4.2.2 TW Kernel found here finally did.
did you try this?

Yes. Nothing changed when I did that. I suppose that I should call out that I am currently on MF9.

i just gave up on trying to do a restore. I actually used Titanium to get as much information from my old backup as possible then just rolled with it. I know that probably isn't what you wanted to hear but that what worked for me.. hope that helps
I have read that the WiFi issue may be a Kernel issue.. Did you try a different TouchWiz kernel and see if it worked out?

This is actually what I was trying to do, sadly. Titanium was backing up my info to the phone storage rather than the SD card, and I had to do a data wipe to get to MJA, so I lost them. I figured I could restore to my MF9 backup to redo them, and that's when the trouble started.
I finally got it working. I had to try several different kernels until one finally worked. Now about flashing a new ROM...

What kernel did you use and how did you install it? I'm having a similar issue and can't find a fix.

Scott, check my first post. I edited it with a link to the page with the kernel I used. Make sure that you choose the correct kernel for your Android version. The MF9 and MJA designators have nothing to do with which kernel you need, so make sure to check in your "aboout phone" section to find out what android version you're running. Using the 4.3 kernel on 4.2.2 will cause a bootloop, which is easily fixed by flashing the correct kernel.

Just purchased a Nexus 7 on swappa.com...

The previous owner said he had unlocked and rooted it. Not sure what version it's on... But could I take an ota update successfully? I don't care if I lose root. I bought this for my son to play with.
Thanks

Check to see if there's custom recovery installed. You should flash a factory image and wipe it clean to be 100% sure it'll take an OTA.

Yes he said he had clockwork on it but I prefer twrp which I'll probably flash..
That's if I decide to just throw a sick based rom on it instead.
Can you recommend a good stock based rom that would continue to be updated?

Hmm... Well, I dunno if Team Android makes any more ROMs but those are as close to stock as you can get. Perhaps going simple CyanogenMod or Carbon would be great alternatives if you cannot flash to stock (although there may not be anymore OTAs it's super stable). I don't think the little one will care too much about customizing the UI.

True. I just want something stable so any apps or movie players (MXplayer) run without an issue.
Always seems like cm had so many bugs, even the so called "stable or snapshots".
I saw that SlimKat had a few stable builds. I love that on my 2013 N7 and my G2. Super stable

That I'm not sure of. If the /system partition was changed at all, the md5 would come out invalid and it would send you into a bootloop. You'd also need stock recovery but you can flash an OTA through custom recovery as a .zip. I seriously recommend flashing a stock image if you expect to take an OTA because you really don't know what the original owner had done...

[Q] Help with Durn updates!

my Computer crashed on me a few weeks back and I lost pretty much all my files. Thankfully my personal files were all backed up, but none of my phone modification files survived. I meant to post here to ask for links and such, but couldn't remember what exactly I had. Then an update hits my phone. Never ever had luck updating a rooted phone. Always just ended up ignoring the icon until I got a new one. Well now there's TWO updates that I've fallen behind on......Better figure it out. So. Please. Help.
Info on phone:
Sprint L720T on MK5 Rooted stock rom.
My Question(s)
How to either un-root to get the updates OTA,
OR
How to flash updated stock roms
I've used odin, obviously, to flash the rooted stock. Pretty sure I used cf's autoroot. I just need a Link to Odin and a brief run down of what I'm trying to do. I may fire back a question or two.
I saw a post on flashing what I believe was a stock 4.3 and then up to 4.4.2. Well that's awesome, but I've TWO updates. Is 4.4.2 the newest? And why am I seeing numbers for jellybean, when I typically see things like "NAE" or "MK5".
And why is it sooo easy to root a bloody phone, but a nightmare to UNROOT said phone? Would think that "click, click....and bam. back to normal". Unfortunately, either I'm looking at the wrong things or I really do have to track down stock files for my specific model to re-flash with odin, then accept OTA, then re-root....?
If so, that SEEMS simple enough, but finding stock for my SPECIFIC model is....frustrating. So please, kind folks, help me out with some direct links to what I need?
Pretty sure answers to the question posted above exist on XDA
Use odin to flash L720TVPUAMK5_L720TSPTAMK5_L720TVPUAMK5_HOME.tar.md5
Use the stock recovery to factory reset.
Phone is now unrooted.
.
This^^ there are tutorials and videos on YouTube that show how to use Odin. All you do is place the tar on the PDA section.

What do you mean by it just stays open. Do you mean it never boots? Like a bootloop? If so, search 7.0 ROMs bootloop, you'll find the solution, tons of threads on the help and q&a here. But if you don't mean what I just explained then could you clarify?
Sorry for not being clear, i dont think it is bootloop. It boots into the rom no issues and i can use it normally and doesn't restart till a few minutes no matter what rom i flash.

If I were you I would flash back to stock and make sure you you don't have a hardware problem, If nothing else it's a chance to start over. I haven't gone to custom roms for these reasons, mine is my daily driver to and I can't afford to get caught without it.

No worries. Yeah I don't know what the issue could be, could be a ROM issue, it's weird though, but like the poster above me, it could be hardware failure and flashing stock would be a good way to find out.
I would love to go back to stock but how? All the tutorials are very hard for me to follow can you guide me to an easy one or tell me how?

I agree that they are a little hard to follow, I looked at them myself and it looks like the quickest way would be to go back to 6.0 and upgrade back to 7. But someone else could correct me on that.
For future reference, it's best to always twrp backup your stock rom before doing any kind of major changes especially custom roms. That way you can always fall back to original if something goes wrong.

I would go back to stock 6.0, if he hasn't upgraded to 7.0, I'll do some digging, find good guides, and post them here in a bit @Philo0o!

Alright if you wanna go the custom ROM route, don't update to stock 7.0, not many custom ROMs work with it's new firmware. I'll get you a guide to go back to stock 6.0 then!
Edit: Alright @Philo0o, here's a good page with all the firmware links for your phone, and the commands to flash the firmware are there for you. Let me know if you have any questions about that.
Also, when your ROMs aren't working, what are you doing to try again? what I mean is you could try a full data format in twrp. Not just a wipe of data, system, etc.. A full format isn't quite like going back to stock, but it may help if there are leftovers somewhere causing issues if that makes sense.
so if you wanna try a full format, backup your internal storage to a computer, or to an sd card, and then format, and then you will have a clean slate, move what you need back over to your phone and voila!
Ill look through that tutorial, and whenever i flash a rom i do a full a wipe
