AOSP Questions

Bear with me guys......haven't posted much on here, more of a lurker.
I have been following the AOSP Rom for the Fascinate for the last two weeks and now with the MMS working I would love to give it a shot. I have a couple of questions before I get started.
I am currently running ComRom 2.1 with the PBJ-50 Kernel. No themes or anything like that.
1. Is it safe to just do a data wipe and factory reset then just install the Rom over top of what I have?
2. Is there a Kernel and a Modem with the ROM?
3. Anything special I need to know if I decide to go back to another Rom (from what I have read just ODIN back to stock and Rom away)?
Sorry if these have been answered already.....I searched and did not find my answers. Thank you for your time.

1. I couldn't answer this with certainty as I haven't flashed it myself and haven't yet dug through the CM7 thread in development to put together correct steps
2. yes there is, but you can flash a custom kernel like OTB or the gingerbread leaks' (ec09) modem as I've seen these work though not for everyone
3. as far as I know all you need to do to go back is just odin back to eclair/froyo with the 2.2 atlas pit file and proceed from there
don't have any experience with CM7 other than what I've read so someone who's done it could probably shed more light on this

I just flashed cm7 today...
1. Data wipe, cache and factory reset should be enough. You need to download and install the 7/04 build, let it boot up and reboot back into recovery and then install the 7/13 build and then the gapps. There is also a modified cwm that you can flash to your phone that's been edited for cm7 not everyone uses it but I did and it works perfectly.
2. There is a kernel included but alot of people have better audio quality with one of the otb kernels.
There isn't a modem. But it seems like most of the newer modems are fine so your current one with comrom is probably good.
3. To do back to stock youll have to use a full odin package. But you probably won't want to anyway.

Not sure how important it is, but I would wipe cache and dalvik as well. I used ED04 modem for a while, and switched to EC09 modem after everyone seemed to recommend it for the MTD roms. TBH, I havent noticed much difference between the 2 radios, they both worked well for me. As far as flashing back to a TW rom, check the sticky in the dev section:

I am already running the EC09 modem. Have been for about a week or so. I watched as others have had good luck with it so I made the jump. I probably will stick with the EC09 as it seems to work fine with AOSP MIUI Rom that I want to try. I tried the EC09 on my wife's fascinate and it ran like crap.....kind of funny how two different build dates run to differently.

How to install CM9 -- brick proof -- guaranteed :)

Galaxy Note N7000.
Was running stock ICS-ROM Samsung.
Always wanted to install and use a custom ROM but was always afraid of BRICKS..
But yesterday ended up being sucessfully running CM9.
Steps I undertook were as follows:
1. Installed Samsung Kies.
2. Check for update from Samsung Kies and updated Kies.
3. Connected my phone to Kies and checked if Kies detected the phone properly.
After sucess, exit Kies.
4. Downloaded PC Odin from this link

5. Download pre rooted GingerBread ROM
SGN_XX_OXA_KJ1_FACTORYFS.zip (thx dr.ketan)

7. Reboot Note in download mode
vol. down+home+power buttons
8. Connect Download mode note to PC
9. PC odin ID:COM turns yellow:
(ALL THE BEST NOW)
10. In PC ODIN
Auto Reboot and F.Reset Time ---> Ticked
Others --> Unticked
10. Click PDA and select the SGN_XX_OXA_KJ1_FACTORYFS.zip you had downloaded.
Click start.
Wait for 10minutes.
Your phone will restart.
11. WOW..!!! now ur on a GB Rom
And its a safe kernel
Now you can play around
Plus already rooted
12. Now to get this GB Rom working
go to recovery mode (vol up + home + power)
clean dalvik cache and wipe data and factory reset
13. Time to install CM9
14. Download
CM9 latest nightly:

15. Copy these 2 files in the internal SD card anywhere (do not rename)
16. Reboot into recovery mode:
vol up + home + power
17. Flash the 2 files from where you saved them:
"install zip from sd card" option in recovery mode
now flash cm9 file
then flash gapps file
18. DO A DATA WIPE / FACTORY RESET
19. Reboot
And wow..
Enter the world of custom ROMS
[[[to switch to another ROM, follow steps 1 to 17, and after that flash the ROM of your choice]]]

Steps 6 and 9

So i have galaxy note gt n700 purchased in germany and brickbug app said that i have dangeros ...something something.... I mean i have mmc bug which will make my phone in paperpress if i mess up. Question is: does step by step guide is safe for my mmc bug? Can i safely follow it and not ruin my phone, because i think i have a bad warranty.

Noticed that u are very experienced contributor, so mybe u can answer on my question, does the step by step guide is safe for galaxt note with brickbug? I realy want to flash, but i want to do it if i am on the safe side

Yes, you can follow this guide safely. Actually, this is the best guide I've seen so far, I wish I had this one the moment I wanted to start messing around with my phone because I spent more than 48 hours total reading and reading and getting more confused each time.
So go ahead and do it.

And the last one, probably silly question, what CM9 rom is this? Will i have GB or ICS? And if thats GB where can i find safe ICS rom?

Before Galaxy Note, I used to rock HTC Wildfire and didn't wanted to mess around with custom roms because it was just low-end device. Third-party launchers did the job for me when it comes to customization.
When I bought Galaxy Note, I was looking forward to flashing Cyanogenmod or maybe something different (I like Paranoid Android rom and the hybrid mode). I was very disappointed to see that there is a brick bug.
Even though I'm a IT engineer and I have been using computers since Commodore 64, I don't have experience in flashing custom roms so this post is very useful if it's the best way to do it.
Do I have to flash different stock GB before rooting, because I have XXLA6 kernel (baseband: xxla4) and I believe that this version is not directly rootable? Correct me if i'm wrong?
What is the best way to return from custom rom (ie. CM9) to stock GB?
In fact, I've been reading for a good amount of time today but there is just too much information, so sorry for the noobish questions.

I installed rom before 2 days and had similar doubts.
Just want to share what problem I faced :
The mobile should be in ON state when rooting CF I was doing it in OFF download mode

CyanogenMod 9 is based on ICS, CM7 is based on Gingerbread. There wasn't a CM8 because Google never released the source code for Honeycomb.
And what you need is a safe kernel, because the kernel is what sends a erase command to a chip inside the phone and that's when you brick it (I think). That happens when you do a factory reset.
Now, what I always do when I want to change ROMS is to use AbbysNote 4.2 as a safe GB kernel so I can then flash the ROM/Kernel of my choice.

So let's say you want to go from CM9 to LiquidSmooth (or pretty much any other), which is the one I use now:
You go to CWM recovery, from there you flash AbyssNote.
Once the flashing is completed, you DO NOT exit CWM, instead you go to "Advanced" and then "Reboot to Recovery" so the phone will restart but it will go directly to CWM again, but now with AbyssNote installed.
AbyssNote has a TOUCH based recovery, so it is easier to use. Don't use the physical power and volume buttons to navigate.
From there you can safely do a factory reset, format cache, format Dalvik, flash a new ROM and Kernel.
AbyssNote will then disappear because it will be overwritten by the new Kernel of your choice. So every time I want to change to a new ROM, I repeat the steps above I haven't had any problems whatsoever.
I hope I'm right with my technicalities, but the procedures the OP and I describe are safe to try as long you follow the exact instructions, so before you try anything, read and re-read and you will be just fine.

Thanks for this great guide! I haven't gotten my Note yet as I just ordered it yesterday but I have been lurking around the forums already and trying to understand how flashing roms and kernels works around here. Like someone already said before some of the guides / threads are 'a little' confusing for newcomers. I was really confused with the brick bug that people were writing about. This thread clarified things a lot for me and I believe it will help many more Note-newbies!
So, new Note community member reporting to duty here! :highfive: It's gonna be pretty neat upgrade considering from what phone I come from. Well, the Huawei at least was great step stone to android world gotta admit. I just got somewhat bored with the not so great custom scene.

Believe me, I know about that thread.
One more question for you. Does flashing abyss kernel bring yellow triangle and raise binary counter? I've heard on one of Zedomax's channels on youtube that he recommends flashing this kernel whenever you need to move from one ROM to another.

Dont worry about AbyssNote, is safe in both respects. That's the one I always use to do anything that is flashing related.
If, for some reason, you start seeing that dreaded triangle at boot, you can use TriangleAway from Chainfire on Google Play.

I will stay on CM9 (and CM10 when it comes) as long as is stable to use it as a daily driver. I don't like the TW interface and I don't need all that S-Pen stuff and pressure sensitivity. Apps from the Play Store are enough for me (Papyrus for example) so there's no need to stay on stock rom.

Will flashing this India GB rom change my kernel to a more stable one?
And if I flash this India GB rom will it be able to update to ICS through Kies or OTA?
I'm not new to flashing as I used to rom my EVO a lot... I just haven't done it in about a year and this brickbug mess has me standoff-ish.

If you are on GB already, you just have to root the ROM and flash CWM because the brick bug is present only on ICS kernels. 99% sure.
There are some GB Stock ROMs that you cannot root directly, so it depends.
OTA updates from Samsung to ICS I'm not sure, you should ask someone else. When I got my Note it already had ICS, so I never did an OTA update. I don't use Kies at all.
I was very weary at first too, but with the instructions above you will be fine.

I've followed the guide from OP and now I'm rockin' CM9! No problems at all.
My content on the internal memory was intact (apps data, games data, etc), it's all there and I've flashed Indian ROM and then CM9. Have I made a mistake or what?

I've always been happy with Checkrom. My previous ROM only lasted 4 hours, so when I saw V7 coming out I immediately flashed it.
After I succesfully flashed it I found out that the kitchenpro app didn't work and later I read that development was stopped. Not even swype which was part of the original samsung.
I now want to flash another ROM, but am afraid to follow the wrong procedure and brick it. It seems I can't even do a factory reset without the risk of bricking it.
I will never flash a checkrom product again.
Can I go into recovery and just flash wanamlite? Does it even work, as it's the standard recovery and not the full CWM?
No (extra) risk of bricking it?
I would appreciate a straightforward answer...

Look at the forum on www.checkrom.com. The instructions of flashing a kernel through Odin and a new rom are written in the V7-section.

Simply flash a safe kernel i.e. siyah kernel, reboot in to recovery and flash a rom(might want to do a full wipe beforehand) or restore a backup.

First off, wise decision...
With respect to getting out of this, you want to flash a 4.0.3 based ROM. Don't go for a 4.0.4 based one quite yet, regardless of recovery type, if you're after a quick and safe fix.
You want to flash Siyah Kernel first, and then flash the ROM from there.
Siyah Kernel can be flashed via ODIN (flash the TAR as a PDA file).
Then go about your procedure to flash as usual. As above I'll re-iterate, don't flash a 4.0.4 based ROM yet (LQ5 or LQM I believe), as these are not always 100% safe in all scenarios.
You're much better to stick away from these for now.
Again, I have no idea why "developers" are going about releasing ROMs which are based on these kernels, without clear and noticeable warnings about what people are getting into...
Oh well... Hope it goes well, just follow this and you'll be fine.

The last time I used Odin was when I bought my SG2. Since then I flashed all my different ROMs with CWM.
Although I'm glad I'm not using checkrom anymore and never will because of the way they stopped their development I do have to admit it had more than decent battery life (their 4.04 version).
I‘m currently on wanamlite and after 2 hours I'm already on 60% :-(
I used to have cyanogenmod 7 on my HTC HD2?
It might be an idea to try 9 or 10

Check out ParanoidAndroid. I'm getting about 30 hours off of the battery.

Very bad form closing the threads when quite a number of people had flashed the new checkrom with the promise of a fix. They could have at least fixed the kernal issue rather than just abandoning it. Very disappointed. Going to try to flash the kernal via ODIN if I can remember even how!

I'll start off by giving some background information. I ordered my Nexus 4 back in March and ran stock up until about July/June. Prior to the Nexus I had the HTC G2. I don't know how to root and and use custom ROMs and I have looked at the root guide for the Nexus but it's a huge barrage of information and some terms that I don't know what they are. However, this question doesn't involve rooting. I gave my Nexus 4 to a friend, who also has the Nexus, to root for me and use a custom ROM. In this process however, he did something that he told me to never do (I really don't know why..) and he ended up soft bricking my phone. He did that because my phone was stuck on the "Google" start up screen for over 40 minutes. Basically, he wiped the entire phone, I think. Due to some issues, we are no longer on speaking terms and he was the only person I knew who knows how to deal with rooting and custom ROMs.
Now I don't have the original back up of the stock. My question is, if I ever needed to send my phone back to Google for repairs or anything else, would I be able to somehow get the phone back to it's stock state?
Also, where could I find some resources that aren't a barrage of information? When I go to those threads like the Nexus rooting guide, it's just so much information and I get lost (I don't even quite know what a ROM is, my current interpretation is an operating system). Currently, I think I know how to update the ROM, I'm currently using Paranoid Android.
I apologize if this issue of mine can easily be solved with a search. I have googled this issue numerous times and I could not really find a solid answer.

Is the phone booting into PA? If not try holding the power button and the volume down at the same time. It should boot into recovery. If it does all you need to do is flash a rom "install a os".

Ohh yes, I should clarify. Currently the phone is working and I have it up to date on Paranoid Android. The only issue I had when updating Paranoid Android was that I could not use the kernel my friend had supplied me with (I think it was the Franco kernel). When I would flash the kernel, it would get stuck on the Google logo screen. I would have to get out of that by re-flashing Paranoid Android again and I've been unsuccessful in flashing any kernels. The main reason I wanted to root my phone was a custom kernel, to help with battery life.
My main question is that I wanted to know if I could ever get it back to stock (as to not void a warranty) if I were to ever need to for any reason.

which franco kernel, was it compatibke with your rom? i mean are you on android 4.3 and the kernel 4.2.2(or vice versa)? when you flashed the kernel, did you flash with the rom then boot up, or did you just flash the kernel alone? did you try redownloading the kernel, maybe a bad download? was it a jss kernel or a jwr kernel?

Yes you can.
Read the guides as slowly as you need to...stopping to research anything you don't understand...
Or just use those no brainer toolkits that teach you nothing.
And stick to stock until you know what's going on within your device when you do these things.

I'm not sure what version it was, I guess that might have been the issue. Would that have caused it to stay on the Google logo screen? I'll make sure to double check for that next time I try to do something.

Thank you for answering. Could you link a good starter thread for me? I was hesitant to use a custom ROM or even to root my phone. What compelled me to do it was the kernels extending battery life. Because I was so lost and felt overwhelmed, I had my friend help me but now we are no longer on talking terms so I'm lost.
Again, I wish to apologize, I know I should just look this up myself, but with the possibility of bricking/soft-bricking my phone, I want to get as much help as possible. Whatever small nudge, I will take.

If you flash a kernel and the phone won't boot, that kernel or version of the kernel isn't compatible with that rom or particular version of Android.

It's very simple to get it back to stock. You'd just need to find a copy of the stock Rom (which I can assure you is probably on this very website floating around somewhere) and flash it in recovery like you would any other Rom.

Also keep in mind, custom roms usually come with custom kernels. So you shouldn't even have to worry about kernel flashing. If you want to preserve battery you should focus more on under clocking and thermal throttling...

[Q] Help unrooting

I wanted to start a new thread since i havent had any luck finding an answer to my question. Basically i need to know how can i unroot my LG G2 LS980 from Sprint. I just want it back to stock. I have tried a few ways (threads in the forums) but after trying fro a few mins they dont seem to work. then when i go to the end of the thread it says these way no longer works. The last one i tried made me download firmware and use the LG Flash tool and change the megalock.dll but after checking all the settings and launching the tool it just sits at 0% forever. I even tried the turn off and put back on download mode again while not closing the tool and it still does the same.
my phone is still on stock recovery, running android 4.2.2 and software version LS980ZV8
I tried doing the OTA that pops up on my phone every other day but it fails to update halfway thru it. Now i want kitkat and i cant update it. I guess worse case i would like to flash a stock rom with kitkat (stock) and still keep it rooted but my issue is im still stuck on ZV8

Well you can easily unroot from inside supersu but if you have modified any part of the system/xposed/removed bloat you will not be able to update unless you flash back to stock

i tried that a few days ago and yes, i lose root access but i stil cant do the over the air updates so im still stuck on my current software version... i was thinking maybe i need to flash a stock firmware back on it and try it that way. Is there a way to unroot or reflash the stock firmware back on? I love this phone but when it comes to root/unroot stuff god i miss my S4

yeah doesnt doesnt work. i got all files all drivers... flashtool pops up i select the files as per instructions. hit the yellow arrow and it does nothing. sits there. I also did the turn off and back into download mode and it doesnt do anything.

have the same issue on the bottom it shows B80 rooted
ok found the culprit
forgot to change the com to 41 (windows)
after that it worked fine

So i need at-least 10 post so I can post in a development forum which kinda sucks. I'm not a total noob i don't need help with flashing anything. I have a legitimate question with a problem im having with a rom. Posting this 10 times in random forums to see if I get intermission to post in Development Forum.

that isn't going to work, you are supposed to make at least 10 helpful post in which you well obviously help someone

Honestly the only help I can give you since I'm using an AT&T version is this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lg693AYgoTo
I know it's for AT&T but for AT&T and Sprint you use the same method to flash. You just have to replace the .tot and .dll for your sprint phone, because the ones included are for the AT&T version. Other than that the steps are the same.
PS the Development forums are not for Q&A, it's for development and feedback (Like logcats and bug fixes, etc).

thanks man... yeah that did it.. .funny thing was that it was set on 41... i changed it to 45 then back to 41 and it worked right after! xD woot
