I am using windows 7, micro SD, micro USB- USB cable, TWRP 2.1.3 and Acer Iconia A500 WiFi only....

STEPS i used :
1) Download a ROM of your choice

I used ACER a500 Slim 01-14-2013 (KTMDave7.zip) <-- for some reason didnt work for me in RECOVERY mode
used Acer_A500_7.014.14_041.203.01_COM_GEN1_1333444737199_8ec8b991_decrypted <-- X didnt work also DUNNO WHY or it maybe just me ???
used Lightspeed_4.8 <-- SUCCESS
2) Put the *.zip on a microSD card of your choice.
PS: usually there is no problem using your FAT ( if your micro SD CAN'T read, try another micro SD )
on my case the 1st micro SD can be read in computer, but acer iconia A500 won't read
3) Insert in your a500's microSD slot (It takes up to 32GB. My 2GB is FAT32 formatted)
4) Start up TWRP ( by holding VOL DOWN + POWER BUTTON )
PS : ENTER the recovery mode
5) WIPE Dalvik cache, wipe Cache, Wipe System
6) in "Mount Menu" Choose UNmount SYSTEM, UNmount DATA
7) back to HOME menu, choose "Install"
8) Browse to "/sdc/" <-- That's the EXTERNAL micro SDCARD folder
9) Select your zip file
10) REBOOT
11) WAIT
DONE!
apparently: Acer Iconia used almost of its update, and flashing ROM using EXTERNAL micro SDCARD

I'm failing to understand. Get rid of TWRP? Get Acer Recovery Installer, replace with stock or ClockworkMod. Its on the Play Market.
Warning: I've yet to find a CWM w/ Touch for the a500

i have no boot rom. my cwm is replaced "accidentally" with twrp by aCer recovery installer.
Only. Suggestion I have is to install a rom via microsd and replace twrp with cwm with that tool. Or use adb tools.

If you're using the TWRP that my a500 has, here's what you do.
1) DOwnload a ROM of your choice (I like pjsports's 4.2.1, found in the next door a500 forum)
2) Put the *.zip on a microSD card of your choice.
3) Insert in your a500's microSD slot (It takes up to 32GB. My 8GB is FAT32 formatted, and TWRP will read it).
4) Start up TWRP
5) Go to "Mount" and check "Mount external SD" (and "System" just to be sure?)
6) Go back to main menu
7) Install
8) Browse to "/sdc/"
9) Select your zip file
10) Be sure to wipe your cache and dalvik I wiped my system folder too to be sure.

I am unsure, then. Is there an error message?

Couple of things
I'd yr ext HDD is formatted as NTFS its never gonna work. If its fat32 mount as USB storage
Flashing an Asus ROM wasn't a good move either.
You're probably best to use a flash drive and use an update zip to flash. Check the root guide in my SIG for the 3.1 full update zip.
If that doesn't work youll need to recover your tab via an EUU...its all in the guide

Acer recovery installer only works for HC roms unless you have the v8 boot loader already.
Cwm 1.7.3 is a stable touch recovery

However, once I reboot, nothing appears to have changed. My kernel version still remains the same. Am I doing something wrong? Is there a step I am missing?

Is your Xoom rooted?
What version of CWM recovery did you install?
You can certainly install the Tiamat Katana kernel or the Tiamat Manta Ray Rom (which also contains the kernel) but you may need some additional steps, depending on your current situation.
I am having the exact same issue, except im on 3.1 and tiamat 1.44
Everything appears to install fine, but when i boot into the system I do not see that the kernel has changed....
Do you really need an external microSDHC card to make this work? I thought the latest CWM let you install from the internal media?

You really need a micro sdcard, and you need CWM recovery 3.2.0.0 R4c version.
Can the SDCARD have other data on it or just the ZIP file?

I have the same question. I returned my 2 week old SGT10.1 for a Xoom yesterday, and I miss being able to flash roms from internal media.
I have CWM 4.0, it LOOKS just like the SGT version: is there a reason why I shouldn't try to flash Tiamet Manta Ray from the internal storage? Surely someone has tried...

It can have other data on it. Just make sure you have enough room for the zip file and a nandroid backup if you plan to make one.

I had the same problem but I think I figured it out. I had been trying to flash the overclocked version. As a shot in the dark I downloaded the stock Tiamat kernel and tried the process again. BINGO! ! I was then able to overclock to 1.7 using setCPU.
Okay, I found part of the problem...
Turns out, the Xoom is mounting its internal storage at /mnt/sdcard and the actual external SD Card to /mnt/external1. From the CWM recovery, I can't seem to navigate to /mnt/external1. What should I do?

I suspect that it's your version of CWM Recovery that's to blame. If you have Version 4.0.0.x you have the wrong version...it doesn't see your external card and you can't flash. If this is the case, you must download and install the Tiamat 3.2.0.0. R4c version, available in the Development section.

I was able to flash without seeing the external flash card. I booted up my Xoom,
connected the USB cable from my laptop which automounts the internal storage which is what is found at the /mnt/sdcard mount point. I copied the stock CPU .zip file to the base directory. Disconnected, rebooted into recovery. Once there I chose "Install zip from sdcard". Then chose "choose zip from sdcard". Then scrolled down to the bottom of the directory listing where I found my zip file and chose that zip file. Then I chose "Yes" to install and it finished from there. FYI I am running CWM v4.0.0.4

It's your choice, but the developers recommend flashing from and backing up to an external sdcard. If you do a nandroid backup with your current recovery version where will the backup be stored? At mnt/sdcard, your internal storage. What if you can't boot one day and have to end up wiping all of your user data before you could restore? If you backup to the external sdcard, that wouldn't be affected by a wipe. Anyway, I guess if you don't have/can't afford an sdcard it's a way to flash from recovery, but I think that version is more for phones which have only one sdcard--external--and only have a tiny amount of internal storage.

Those are just mountpoints, they have no bearing on how they present the contents.
CWM and Tiamat just have different mountpoints to the same device, the contents are the same.
If you put a file in /mnt/external1 you will see it in CWM under /mnt/sdcard, exactly the same.

you would have to look for an icon pack for the battery pictures. usually comes in a zip that you just flash in CWM. dont know if you have already but make sure you hit the thanks button for okantomi! do it now!

You should never fist your Nook.
Seriously, you have to provide info on your setup. CM7 version, CWR version, SD or eMMC install, etc.....
Without knowing what you were initially trying to fix or what materials you have on hand, I would say make an up-to-date CWM card:

hey thanx did this but dose not format any of them but loaded the zip file and it took it but stuck on n and tried the 8 fails boots and it always fails to restore

I was interested in upgrading to the stable 7.1 release. I am currently using the 7.1 RC on my nook color. I read this on the cyanogen mod website:
"Upgrading from any previous CM-7 release or nightly build should be smooth and no wipe should be required."
Does this mean I can flash the rom over top of the current RC without having to wipe any of my data or apps? This would be great as I have customized my nook quite a bit since getting it. I don't mind if I lose settings or things of that nature, but it would be great if I could keep my home screen and such. Anyways, just wondering. Thanks.
Your assumption is correct, all you need to do (well advised) is wipe your cache, and yes, it will take a while to boot the 1st time... Just did it tonight myself
You just need to wipe dalvik cache when updating.

Just drop the new ROM .zip onto the root of the card and boot up.

I'm also running off the SD card. Is there a way to copy the .zip into the boot partition of the SD card from the Nook itself, or do I need to remove it and do it from a computer? I'm using File Expert and don't see a /boot folder.

Use your PC and a card reader.....
I know I can use a card reader, but I was just curious if it is possible to do it without removing the card or connecting the Nook to a computer.
I downloaded the .zip onto my nook, I just don't see where to copy the file.

you can use adb (adb wireless works very well)
on a windows machine you can use windows explorer to get to the folder with your zip file in it...
open a command window (start/run cmd)
if adb wireless... adb connect IP address
adb shell busybox mkdir /sdcard/boot
adb shell busybox mount /dev/block/mmcblk1p1 /sdcar/boot
adb push (zip file... can drag from windows explorer) /sdcard/boot
you will then have the zip file on the boot partition of the sdcard and can boot to uSD recovery for updating.

Upgraded to CM7.1.0 stable from CM7.1.0RC on uSD card
I upgraded to CM7.1.0 stable from CM7.1.0RC using ROM Manager on uSD card. One issue I noticed is the stable version run slower. The RC version had Quadrant scores between 2500 to 3060. Now the Quadrant scores are between 1800 and 2600. I only wiped Davlik cache. All app data and settings remained the same. I activated the emmc as SD for extra storage and OS swapped 5.9gb to internal emmc. I am using a Kinston 8 gb class 10 with Speed Booster cache set to 2048 (original setting on sd was 1024). Anyone else experiencing a slower OS after updating to CM7.1.0 stable?

I suggest, next time, you should open a new thread, providing a basic system info along with question.
For now, "wipe dalvik cache" simply by entering CwM Recovery (ClockworkMode Recovery) then go to Advanced, you'll see Dalvik there, select it, perform wipe.
Note: this only for running CM7 from eMMC, not booting from uSD.

It's a little like trying to write the boot sector on a Windows system after you've booted. Too much potential damage can result from accessing the boot partition while you're running the system.

This sounds like you are running CM7 off of SD... you DO NOT use CWM for SD installs.
If you are not running off of SD... then I'd make sure you have the current version of CWM (3.2.0.1) and try mounting the SD from the menu's before trying anything else.

Assuming you have a good flashable CwMR 3.2.01 uSD.
Plug it into the NC, when powering up, it should be automatically booted into CwM Recovery. From there, do the Backup.
No need to mount SD card. In fact, don't know why you would do that?

1- How do I know if I have a good flashable CwMR 3.2.01 uSD?
I have the one that comes with the CM7 updated to 3.2.0.1.
2- I went on ROM Manager ->Backup Current ROM but still, when I am in the recovery mode and I click on
backup and restore -> backup
I get the message Can't mount /sdcard
I have also tried to turn on the nook and enter into the recovery mode by pressing the n key but still, I get Can't mount /sdcard when I try to backup my ROM.
What do I do wrong?
P.S. In case my CwMR is not good, how do I remove it?

Now, if you did install ROM into eMMC yourself, then I assume you know how to create a flashable CwMR uSD and it is good.
Assuming the flashable uSD is fresh and good.
1. Insert the uSD into NC. Power it up. It will boot into recovery AUTOMATICALLY.
2. From the CwMR menu, using volume up/down button to to Advanced, then Backup. Let it run until finishes. Theoretically, the entire backup .zip file should be around 100MB.
3. Remove the uSD off NC.
4. The backup .zip file should probably be in the "clockworkmod" folder under ROOT. Transfer it to PC or other space to save.
That's it.
There is absolutely no need dealing with "mount SD" or "ext3" or "ext4"

I want to root my HD nook today, if anyone can guide me to the appropriate ROM/Image/GAAPS/anything else I need will be appreciated.
I want to install the Hybrid version on my nook - my software version is 2.0.6.
I am planning to follow the instructions from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=37578234 (Diogenes5 post). He provides links to which roms but don't know which ones to download.
Any other assistance will be greatly appreciated.

You want CM10.1 by bokbokan. They are the only ones that work on his Hybrid. And get the latest.

Leapinlar - This is the bokbokan thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2063968
Bokbokan has three sections to his post - CWM bootable image, CM10.1 CWM flashable rom, and CM10 CWM flashable ROM - so which sections files do I need? Also any recommendation for instructions using Windows?

CM10.1 CWM flashable ROM. And use the Diogenes instructions you quoted earlier.

Leapinlar - question - I did instructions 1-3 and the nook recognizes the SD in step 3. How do I get the rom on the SD per step 4? Can I connect the nook to the PC via the USB cable?
Additionally - what does Optional: 8) Install one of leapinlar's fixes from this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...2097731&page=4
enable the tablet to do and where do I get the files and instructions if I wanted to enable this as well.

You can either use stock to download the CM10.1 zip directly to the internal SD or connect the USB cable with stock booted and use the cable to copy the file from your PC to the internal SD.
Once the file is on the internal SD, you can boot to the SD again and use the "install zip from SD/choose zip from internal memory" option.
And my files are attached to the post he quoted (my HD+ Hybrid thread linked in my signature) and instructions are there to. I have a section there devoted to the HD Hybrid.

I am really sorry to be so dense about this. I copied the ROM and the GAAPS to the Internal SD, I didn't put it inside any particular folder. Now when I boot the nook back up, choosing install zip from SD/Internal memory - it asks choose which zip to apply - i do not see the ROM zip and the GAAPS zip.
Did I need to extract the Flashable ROM zip and copy those files to the internal SD or the copying the entire folder is fine?
What am I missing....

I don't remember exactly how bokbokan did his CWM internal memory. You may have to look in a folder named /media.
And keep the zips intact.

I'll attempt to describe this to you as easy as possible, and hopefully you should have your Nook ready in minutes. It doesn't take too much effort or time; mainly waiting for install requires time, other than that it's a quick process. It's not difficult either; the more you believe it is difficult, the more it will be.
I'll start from the beginning; and you go can go from there.
1. Download the latest ROM for your Nook HD (this is a hummingbird variation) from: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2063968
The latest version is, as of today (CTRL + F in your browser, then paste the first line of the following quote to find it easily):

2. Now you need to download the latest ClockWorkMod Recovery for your Nook (to install the ROM). Once you download it, you must also download the latest update file. Download CWM & the Update from: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2097731

Download both these from the link on step two (above; in this paragraph).
3. You optionally can install Gapps too; which I would recommend to access all of Google Services, including the Play Store. So download it from here: http://goo.im/gapps/gapps-jb-20121212-signed.zip
4. Let's get started! First, if you have a Windows machine, download WinDiskReader32 (click). This is to burn the CWM .img to your SD card. Now plug in your SD card into your PC. Extract the CWM files, it was downloaded in step 2. You should have a single file with the extension .img. Load up WinDiskImager, select the CWM file, and also select the drive which your SD card is inserted into. Make sure you do not overwrite any other drive (i.e. C drive), as you will wipe out your whole PC OS. Then hit the "Write" button on WinDiskImager. Your SD card will now have CWM installed (and your SD will be partitioned. This is fine, and you should only see around ~160MB on your SD card; again this is perfectly normal).
5. After burning CWM to your SD card, extract the update file (also downloaded in step two) directly into your SD card. So basically, extract the update file into your SD card, and it will ask if you want to overwrite any existing files, confirm this.
6. Connect your Nook to your PC, whilst on the stock B&N ROM and in MTP mode (if you don't know what MTP is, most likely you haven't changed it, so your can ignore it). Once plugged in. Transfer the ROM file you downloaded in step 1, and Gapps which you downloaded in step 3 to your Nook's "Internal Storage". Transfer the ROM & Gapps (DO NOT EXTRACT THESE FILES, JUST COPY THEM TO YOUR SD CARD) to your Nook HD's internal storage via PC. Once fully transferred, move onto the next step.
7. Turn your Nook off. Eject your SD card from your PC. Place the SD card into your Nook. Turn on your device. At this point, your Nook will constantly restart as it sets up your SD card (don't touch it at this point, let it do it's thing). After a while, you should be booted into CWM. This is when the process of setting up the SD card has been complete.
8. In CWM, select "install .zip from SD card", then select "install .zip from internal sd card". Locate and install the ROM. This may take some time. Once complete, locate and install the Gapps file.
9. This isn't mentioned in the original setup, or anywhere else, but I would recommend that you fix the permission of your Nook HD now, as a fresh install before you proceed to use it. Go to this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2233688 and start from Section 5 on the link, once done, return to this thread, then move onto the next step here.
10. Optionally (if you don't want to install, skip to step 11), now you can install a patch by leapinlar. For example, if you boot into CyanogenMod, you cannot use your internal storage. You can only use your SD card. However, if you would like to use your internal storage when in CyanogenMod, install this fix by leapinlar:

From: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=38153094#post38153094 If you install this fix, your internal storage will be used instead of your SD card (this is a bonus for those who are using 2GB SD cards, since they're limited on storage). After this fix, all your apps and everything will treat the internal storage as it's default native storage space.
11. Go to the root menu on ClockWorkMod Recovery, and select "reboot system now". Your tablet will now reboot into CyanogenMod perfectly.

It is in Media - so I installed the ROM but my fat fingers clicked something else before I can wipe cache etc. I still need to install GAAPS and your files.
How do I get back to the menu structure that enables me to clear cashe and install from internal sd?

Power Button: To go up one menu, for example if you go into "Advanced", to return to the original menu, you simple press the power key.
Volume Up/Down: These two keys are for navigation purposes, allowing you to scroll up or down the menu respectively. Use these keys to highlight your option.
Home/'n' Button: This is to select the current option, for example, if you're currently hovered over "Reboot system now", and press the 'n' key, your tablet would reboot.
Use the power button.

It installed CM, but I didn't Wipe cache and dalvik and then install GAAPS and then wipe cache and dalvik etc.
My Nook boots up into CM but now I want to get back into the menu that will enable me to wipe cache and install GAAPS etc.

You mean once you have left CWM and booted to CM10, how do you get back to CWM recovery? Reboot and hold the n key. A boot menu will pop up. Follow the directions there to get to CWM recovery.

Since you wiped it after installing Gapps, there's no need to do it again; as it won't make a difference. But if you want to, simply boot into recovery.
On a Nook HD, to boot into the recovery. Turn off your Nook, and using the boot menu select CWM. Or, if you prefer, follow the guide here from Step 3 to 5: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2233688

What is hanging at 99%? Stock? You should not be booting to stock, you should be booting to SD and selecting CWM recovery in the boot menu.

Use the boot menu to get to stock. To get to CM10 from rooted stock, install an app from Play Store named Quick Boot by Sirius Applications. You can use that to tell it to reboot. If you do not have stock rooted, you must power off and back on.

I downloaded the app - when I go into bootloader from the app, the nook reboots and hangs at 99%.
I do believe I rooted the nook and installed CM10 because I was able to go to play store and download the app.
