Samsung send Cyanogen a Galaxy SII

A developer for Cyanogen, atin, has been sent a Galaxy SII by Samsung to help him port Cyanogen to it!
A step in the right direction. More details here:-

See, this is one reason I still think Samsung have mostly the right approach.
1) It's not hard to root a Samsung Android device.
2) They do not prevent custom ROMs being created
3) They encourage a popular alternative firmware
My only gripes have been centered around firmware releases (too slow though not helped by operators slowing the upgrade process), and battery life overall. But then the same can be said about most Android devices, so.. not so much of a Samsung gripe I guess
My fault for getting too excited.
Its a win win situation. If Samsung supports this scene, many peolple buy their products. Not only the SGS2 but maybe in near future too.
Not the bad way HTC entered for a short time. Maybe its too late for them.
Why should i go back to HTC when i am happy with Samsung?
Just my 2 cents

[Ics 4.0] Samsung plans to Offer ICS 4.0 for Galaxy S & Tab after Huge Demand !!

After one of the biggest online revolt against Korean Giant Samsung Electronics by its consumers after announcing straightaway that it won’t be coming out with ICS Android 4.0 for its 1st Generation Galaxy S and Galaxy Tab line up, now it seems like Samsung had to bow down to the reaction of its customers. Samsung today announced that it will be going to review its decision for not rolling out ICS for Galaxy S and Galaxy Tab which clearly suggests that Samsung Electronics will soon be going to unveil the ICS Android 4.0 version.
This decision comes after so many forums reported that when unofficial ICS Android 4.0 builds are taking rounds for its 1st generation line up of Samsung Galaxy Tab and Galaxy S then why can’t Samsung can optimize for the same. Some of the leading forums also kicked off an online petition request which was supported by users in a huge number and in turn has really shaken Samsung and is now forced to review its decision.
just hope that this “Review” will soon be converted into a speedy roll out of ICS Android 4.0 for its 1st generation Galaxy devices which includes Galaxy Tab and Galaxy S. Do, share with us your reaction and thoughts on this as it will further help us and to you as we will be passing this feedback to Samsung.

Yeah Bow to the power of internet ^^
I already felt like a dupe buying SGS I 3 months before the SGS II (exact same price)...
Refund us and give us all a SGS II
The power of the internet! Truly amazing!

Guess we need to push harder then.
i just read that too
the reason samsung gives out is a lie. they just want to shrug off their responsibility
if ram is the main problem then what fate will come to the newly released galaxy s plus, and galaxy w, and galaxy Y. they all have 512 or less mb. HORRIBLE SUPPORT is the main problem here. look at SONY ERICSSON and learn samsung!
My next phone will be a Google phone.
Nexus rulz!
LOL extra bloat above bloat instead of AOSP when you give the performance excuse?
You can't be serious.

Don't see why they should learn from Sony Ericsson. They are not faster than samsung updating their phones. Samsung has 2.3.6 for most of their phones while SE has 2.3.4.
Never really saw the reason to release the Galaxy S Plus. Atleast, here in Sweden it costs more than the S2. That's Samsungs main problem. All these models that are the same as the others. They have Gio, Ace, Mini, Galaxy Y? They are mainly the same phones. If they would instead only release two of them, like the Ace and the Mini, they would have time to upgrade all the phones. WAKE UP, SAMSUNG!!!

It's just Sony now fyi.
I usually don't join in these discussions; however your statement is untrue.
My wife's SE X10 flagship smartphone from 2010 is NOT getting an update to ICS.
How do you explain that? This phone was released with android 1.6 and would not get an update to gingerbread at first, also the phone was uncapable of multitouch and would not get an update... I doubt many would agree with you that SE update policy was great back then.

I think your best bet for updates is to go with the Nexus phones.
get back to the topic guys,.. we need to do something,..
Ontopic; Samsung might also consider to release drivers for the hardware for coming android versions... although a vanilla android 4 from samsung would be nice.
How much flashmemory does ICS with touchwiz need and how much does the SGS have?
I know 2 things
1. i9000 can run ICS unoffically
2. can run Modern Combat 3 smoothly
So Samsung - don't be lazy, it will hurt your business! i had i5700 spika that wasn't updated, i9000 that wont be updated - i will not make this mistake for the 3rd time...
People at Samsung mobile are so stupid they think that we will buy S2 when we don't get ICS on S1
Samsung U can't force us!

Probably 1GB of RAM like the SGS II. Touchwiz in its current incarnation for the SGS II is a memory hog, and probably would not work on the SGS with ICS if they tried.
They would most likely need more than one branch of Touchwiz to bring it to other devices, and this is probably the reason why it won't be released for the SGS and devices with less than 1GB of RAM.
I don't think its not possible, I think Samsung just does not want to spend dev hours on older devices in which they won't see a return in investment. (and of course, you won't be going out to buy a new device)
Like it or not, Apple has changed consumer expectations for updates. I understand its much easier to do such a thing with a limited amount of devices, but in the eyes of the average consumer, that is not their problem.
Don'r exite guys, it is just a rumour confirmed by GSMA!!

I think this was a final decision. CM9 is coming.. so there is no problem.^^

Samsung has no plans to deliver ‘Value Pack’ for Galaxy S smartphones

Rumours that have suggested Samsung is working on delivering an Android ‘Value Pack’ update for Galaxy S smartphones have been dealt a blow after The Next Web was informed that there are no plans for its release.
At the end of December, Samsung explained that memory issues on the Galaxy range stopped the company from delivering an update for its older smartphones. The TouchWiz interface and Samsung Widgets were said to be unreliable on the ageing handset, helping Samsung make the decision not to update the Galaxy S.
Just a day later, it was reported that Samsung was reconsidering its decision not release an Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0) update for the Galaxy S and Galaxy Tab, and was apparently readying a “Value Pack” that could deliver new features without a full rollout of the new Android software.
However, a Samsung spokesperson has said that the company will not offer the update due to the hardware specifications of the older Galaxy devices, in that they are limited to and fully optimised for the Gingerbread experience.
The news will frustrate Galaxy S owners that had gotten their hopes up following recent reports, with many still on a two-year contract, they were hoping to see new features on the device. That said, Samsung has begun to roll out Ice Cream Sandwich updates for the Galaxy S II and is working to deliver upgrades for the Galaxy Note and its newer Galaxy Tab models.

I wonder why after 4 hours nobody has answered yet.
Well, actually everything is said in other threads.
But to sum up, every other manufacturer would do the same.
So hopefully something will change in half a year when i sign a new phone contract.
I am not sure it will be a Samsung again, but after this time, the Galaxy Nexus could be a little bit too old :/
Another useless complain thread... Please check the sticked thread on this and close this one

The galaxy nexus will never be to old. Haha it just came out and Android will update for at least 2 more years. Look how many updates the nexus one got and use that info to predict how many the GS will get.

never is kinda exaggerated
since i'm getting a new phone in October 2012 it will be old^^ (for the development's sake)
true ... )))

So long great community and so long Galaxy S1

Hi guys,
I really don't know how to put this but... I got myself a Galaxy S3 and I'm waiting for it to arrive now. This has been by far the best community I've been in. The Samsung Galaxy S1 is a LEGEND but mine is starting to give me some screen flickering problems and I decided to move on to the next awesome phone. I was waiting for the Nexus 4 BUT the picture quality from the camera is just bad, no external storage solution, glass on the back makes me think twice and I didn't really manage to get it since it sold in 7 minutes here in Spain. Because of the poor customer support Google offered on their launch, I've decided to give them poor support too by not getting their phone just to return the favour. Also, when I saw that Nexus S is not recieving 4.2 update (wich it can PERFECTLY handle) I was like yeah... sure Google, I thaught you were the best but you're just like every other manufacturer. My best choice was a new unlocked Galaxy S3 and in Spain there's a promotion that you get a Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 with your Galaxy S3 unit (AWESOME). The phone costed me 450€ brand new and unlocked from http://www.pccomponentes.com . One thing is sure, Galaxy S3 will get Android 5 or whatever Android version is after 4.2 while the Galaxy Nexus will recieve updates (has far less specs), I believe that the S3 will also. My contract ends next year in December so I have plenty of time to gather carreer points and get the Galaxy S5 for free or whatever awesome phone will come out in 2014.
I'm gonna sell this S1 legend to my ex-girlfriend since she's in love with it. I currently have CyanogenMod 10 STABLE with everything stock. It ROCKS, this phone has never been that fast.
Last of all, I'd just like to thank EVERYONE in this community for making this possible, for making such awesome roms and kernels. I really enjoyed flashing with you guys, you guys are the best! Special thanks to pawitp and stratosk who made my phone FLY for this time long.
Your friendly community member,

Easier said than done my friend. Updates should still rollout to us next year.. not sure about the Note but.. asking for source for one device and saying .. and we want source for THIS device too! ..is probably not gonna work in our favor.

I mean if we will be together we can change something. I know s3 will take updates that must be but if we wont push for updates, source codes thay will make habit. Maybe in future for marketing strategy they wont give update only source codes i dont know.
I know only one thing thats not true. And thanks for your reply also friend. I want to change something :good:
