Hi, I just recently bought a Nexus 10, and this is my first android device so I am new to everything. I am interested in rooting my device, and would like some information about it. How do I install this "CyanogenMod" I keep hearing about? I used the Nexus Root Toolkit to root my device already, do I need to do anything else? Is there some stuff you recommend doing now that I am rooted? Help would be appreciated, thanks!

Well, its always good to see new users interested in rooting. To be honest rooting your device really opens up the world of android and the capabilities that people love about android. So you've already used the toolkit to root? And you've got CWM or TWRP installed?

Many would suggest that you get to know how the stock Android device works and behaves. You want to get acquainted with the true Android flavor before you get in to the good stuff.
I would say play around and enjoy your Nexus 10 how Google intended (Especially if this is your first Android!), and if you aren't 100% satisfied go ahead and root it.
Regardless, if you are intent on rooting you should check out the sticky in the Nexus 10 General section which has all the info laid out for you on how to root (and do many other things!) here:

Hello everyone, three days ago I bought a N7 and i find it really awsome! despite that I miss the features I have with my rooted galaxy s (backup, ad-remove..). I searched on the forums and found different answers but wanted some opinions. Which is the best/safest way to root the N7? I do not intend to flash an alternative ROM as I always did with my phone since stock one is perfect, but maybe an alternative kernel..do you think it is worth to change kernel?which one would you suggest?
Thank you for your help!
Look for wugfresh in the android dev section... works beautifully
Definately use a ToolKit as they are so simple, cuts out all of the issues you may experience and you are literally rooted before you can blink.
I USED THIS ONE
Gotta say an amazing little toolkit and had absolutely no problems what so ever, and whats more all the drivers etc that are needed, are included in the ToolKit
Hope this helps.
Better use the Nexus 7 toolkit, I found it to be the easiest way to unlock the bootloader and root my Nexus 7. I can't comment on kernel as of now, coz I just purchased the Nexus 7 and want to keep it stock with root.
Another vote for the toolkit. I used it last week to root mine and it couldn't have been easier.
The best and safest why is FASTBOOT

Wtf! No toolkits...
This is a nexus device... the easiest phone to root manually PERIOD.
Using a toolkit only becomes useful after you know what your doing.

Hello all,
I'm very new to the XDA fourms, and would like to thank everyone for having and keeping such a supportive community for Android based products
I would like to start off saying I just recently purchased a Nexus 4 and I would really like to root it, i'm a complete noob too rooting and have a few questions. I did read http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1995688 and the how too Youtube video. questions below
1. I did see that i can keep the custom rom and just unlock and root my device, but will this allow me to change my cpu speed and such to conserve battery or would i need to install a different kernal and rom?
2. After rooting and unlocking my device and keeping stock rom will i still be able to get OTA updates without reverting back to factory state? or would i have to revert back to factory state DL the OTA update and re-root again?
3. I know that nexus 4 tool kit says Root Stock Jelly Bean builds (upto 4.2.1 JOP40D), can i use this for 4.2.2 or is their a updated Tool kit for 4.2.2? and if their is can someone please provide a link i tried searching for it and couldn't find anything, and preferably from Mr. mskip
I know these questions have probably been asked a million times and i apologies in advance for that. (noob problems )
Also advice and opinions are always extremely welcome :good:

1. CPU control is a function of the kernel. You can keep the stock kernel, but I'd recommend a custom one. More features and capabilities.
2. I may be mistaken, but I believe your OTA will function as long as you are on the stock ROM and kernel with the factory files in place and the stock recovery. That's a lot to sacrifice for an update, especially when they'll be readily available here.
3. Don't use a toolkit. Use the rooting sticky to learn how to do it right.
thank you

Yes, that thread has a lot of great info you should read up on if you are new to all of this.
Here is also a great thread if you just want to root the stock ROM. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2018179

Because when one uses a toolkit nothing is learned. If they ever run into a problem they won't know how to fix it. It also makes it more difficult for others to help because they don't understand the terminology.
I wrote more about this last January. That thread is linked in my signature "Dangers of toolkits and one click root methods."

I wouldnt worry about updates.
Devs upload there ROMs with new android updates quickly.
Itll be much easier just to flash custom UPDATED ROMs than ota updates in my opinion.
Franco kernel would be a great start for you as well.
Amazing kernel.

I'm excited to say that I have finally invested in a tablet and decided to go with the Nexus 7 that I bought for a GREAT price! I am curious about rooting and s-off etc. I was curious if there was any information that I needed to be aware of in regards to not being able to root or s-off with updates. I would really like to have a smooth experience with accomplishing root on my Nexus but I know there could be some bumps in the road . Any information or links to threads etc. are much appreciated, I haven't unboxed yet just due to the fact that I want to make sure I can root it without it auto updating something.
Thanks In Advance
Very easy to root using nexus root toolkit
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2389107
Just be sure the toolkit updates itself to latest version.
You need to first "unlock the bootloader". I would recommend to do that in the beginning because it will wipe your device.
Personally i had best experience with stock kitkat 4.4.4 rooted and all unneccessary software disabled. I dont like volume adjustment on lollipop 5.0.2 but i always update to latest version just for fun.
Congratulations for your new tablet, it is a great device!
Thanks for the link and the info, any recommendations on roms/kernals? I'm new to the Nexus series so I am not familiar with any of the development/developers.
IMHO the best thing with Nexus is you'll always get the latest official rom. I have only used stock but feel free to experiment.
On my phone with 4.4.4 I use stock with xposed framework. Some great modules there. However i read that xposed is not yet ready for 5.0.2.

I suggest the elementalx kernel. And if you want a (improved) stock experience go for Cleanrom.
From what I remember from my HTC Wildfire days, S-OFF = Unlocking the bootloader.
If I'm wrong, can someone explain the difference
Thanks.

Can you confirm something. When did you get your Nexus 7 and from where. There have been problems with recently released Nexus 7 tabs from Groupon, Frys, and Best Buy that have made things difficult to do things like flash. There was a revision in google/asus latest batch that makes mounting any partitions/memory difficult.

Here are some threads that have been following the follow of new Nexus 7 tabs out in the wild.
Unlock is no problem, Wugs can get you there but not root. you need cf-auto root to achieve that.

Just out of curiosity, and to just make sure we are all on the same page. You got the 2013 (2nd gen) Nexus 7, correct? Being this is your first Nexus Device, and tablet if you weren't aware there is a Nexus 7 2012, and 2013.
Probably a dumb question, but don't want to link you to all these things and have you brick your Nexus because it was the wrong gen. Enjoy, thing is awesome.

I have been running CleanROM since I have been able to flash. Smooth, snappy and very stable I highly recommend the ROM to those that have not flashed it yet.

I got my Nexus 7 close to two weeks ago from Wal-Mart for an AWESOME price. They had it on sale for $125 and I had to grab it, there was no way I was going to pass up on that deal. I have only flashed CleanROM on my N7 so far and I haven't had any issues. Thanks for the links!

Thanks for the info. I'm still doing a bunch of reading trying to learn as much as I can being this is my first tablet. This device can do so much I'm trying not to get ahead of myself. If I wanted to flash a new rom/kernal what should I wipe in TWRP and in what order? Thanks in advance.

Its been a month... So I assume you are sorted but in case you aren't... To ensure cleanest install, wipe data and cache through twrp then flash new ROM. This will delete your data so back it up first if there is anything you want on it.
If ROM is from same family.... You can try dirty flashing ( ie not wiping data ) but it may end in boot loop or force closes in apps... I always just wipe as it ensures clean install to give you best experience with the ROM.
Enjoy

About roms.
Either stock/CM. I am using cm12.1 latest build on android 5.1.1 with elementalX kernel. Very smooth.
Remember:TWRP>>>>>>>CWM
Every ROM is good that I've flashed. Only had this about a week but loving it.
My phone is a lg and is a pos when it comes to **** not working with aosp
Plan on buying nothing but nexus from now on,feels weird having everything working, and working well. In a weird kinda way....
Hi all
I know you probably get this a lot but could really do with some help.
Basically my wife has a nexus 7 2012 and it's become unusable now since lollypop. I have tried factory reset etc but it's still so slow. I have decided I'd like to delve into the rooting game and see if this will solve the problem.
I have a nexus 7 2013 so if I am honest if I brick it then I won't be devastated because she can always use mine so decided to bite the bullet and try.
I am not expecting a walk through guide but is there any good way to try and start this? I am quite techy but I know nothing about rooting let alone where to start.
I kind of understand roms and I want a basic one that will make her nexus workable again.
Any help on how I go about starting this whole rooting would be appointed.
Thanks all
Chris
Are you on 5.1.1? If not get that update fixed my 2012 & 2013 right up! If not, search for "nexus root tool kit". That's what I use without a hitch! But try the update first, it may just do the trick.
? Here there be Whales ?
Thanks and yea I'm on 5.1.1 I'll search that thanks
Once I root the device how do you put roms on? And what roms are the best?

An easy way to root is by using the nexus root toolkit by wugfresh, a good rom to try is chroma also mkernel works well with the stock rom. Make sure you make a backup before you start flashing anything .
How do you back up?

Hi, I'm Nick and I own a Nexus 6P and I have been researching a lot when it comes to rooting a device. Now I just don't know what to do. Should I root my device now or wait for Nougat to come and then root and maybe (if they update to Nougat) install a custom ROM like Pure Nexus or Paranoid Android?
What do you suggest?
By the way I'm a beginner when it comes to rooting and/or installing custom ROMs.
I'm open to any opinions or suggestions.
Thanks.
are you crazy asking that on xda? xD but yeah unlocking/rooting the nexus is great with the nexus root toolkit (easy program to use) so i say go for it as if you dont like it you can always flash the factory image and lock it like it was when you got it
My opinion if you just got your phone go ahead and unlock your bootloader now. That's because it will wipe all of your personal data and you don't want to have a lot of work into your phone just to start over. That doesn't mean you have to root. That's a personal preference. I say use your phone for a while and if you find need to root it then root it it's a rather easy process once you get going
Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk
the only real question is, what do you need root for?
if you dont need to do anything special that requires root, then there is no need to root. On the other hand, if you want to do something that requires root, obviously go ahead and root it.
As suggested above, unlock the bootloader as soon as you can, leave it that way. There is no harm in doing so, and it will save you time/effort later on.

You're better off unlocking your bootloader now. It will completely wipe your device so backup your important data first.
