Hey, everyone. I browse XDA a lot but I've never really had a reason to post. I do now, however.
Basically what I'm trying to do is unlock and root my Nexus 7. I discovered Wug's Nexus Root Toolkit which seems to be the best way to go about the process. From all the hubbub about it, I figured it was going to be quick and painless. Lucky me, I was wrong lol. At least for me. All I needed was to get the ADB installed with the device so I could get started, then my adventure began.
You see, whenever I connect the device via USB with debugging mode on, my PC goes mad and the device automatically connects and disconnects itself in a rapid fashion. I cannot get it connected long enough to install the correct drivers for it, the usb driver found with the Android SDK, or whichever one's the Toolkit provides as well. If it's not in debugging mode, all is normal, and the Nexus 7 installs as a simple portable device (due to windows). However, I'm unable to update it's driver with the "android_winusb".
I am running Windows Vista Home Premium and looked up ways to disable the automatic driver installation, since Windows wants to install specific drivers, figuring that was the issue. The Local Group Policy Editor is not found in my versions of Vista, so I can't disable it that way. When I disable it in Hardware of Advanced System Settings, it simply just doesn't work.
My USB cables are fine, so it's not that. I've tried every drive method in the Toolkit, and have had mild success getting the ADB drive to install properly and have "Android device" appear in the Device Manager with the ADB listed. However for it to be listed, it must be in debugging and the problem remains, it wont stay connected long enough to do anything with it. Much less root, unlock, or backup...or anything for that matter. Then windows tries to install the unwanted drivers again...ugh.
The problem seems to be narrowed down to the debugging mode issue when connected. It's hopefully my only hurdle. Has anyone else had this issue, and if so, found a working solution? This has become very frustrating and not something I expected to endure at all. Having spent a few hours trying to solve this, I hope someone else out there can help me out from here. It'd be much appreciated!

I had that problem too, and it was solved by plugging the usb cable at the back of your pc.

Now that you mention it, I have heard of certain USB ports not liking certain things. What a simple solution. You know, lol...it'll probably work. Thanks so much for commenting. I'll edit this post if all is well.
I would have edited my previous message, but I'm afraid I still need help and needed to bump this up.
I plugged the USB cable into the back of my PC and all seemed well. I was able to painlessly get the ADB all set up without any interruptions. Needless to say, I was excited and ready to unlock and root and...not so fast. After a short bit, the disconnecting and reconnecting bull****, for the lack of a better word, began again. Windows ceaselessly wants to install the damn drivers as the MTP or Camera, regardless if it failed or succeeded. Because of this, the device manager loses the Android Device drop down and the ADB Composite interface along with it. It just doesn't exist and therefore, I can't proceed with the Nexus Root Toolkit.
This is insanity. Is there anything I haven't tried that could remedy this? It shouldn't be this nerve wracking just to root a device, I swear...lol.
Any chance you have access to another PC' maybe a family member? That way you can rule out your PC as the problem.

Well, I did plug it into my girlfriends laptop once to see if it would act up, and with USB debugging turned on, it did not. That may be my last resort, but ideally, I'd prefer to use my own PC for any business such as this, and it irritates me when there's an issue that shouldn't even be that I can't solve. I'm sure some out there can understand that feeling.
So at this point, I'm just looking for a possible solution on my end. If there isn't one, then I guess I'll have to submit and abduct her laptop...lol

There was a time when my aunt's galaxy tab 2 will act like this. What I did was turn off usb debugging first and let it install the drivers. Then I turned usb debugging on again and I didn't have the problem. It could also mean that the cable you got is faulty or somethin.

Well, if I connect it with debugging off, it installs as a typical portable device and when I try to update the drivers with the winusb drivers needed, it doesn't install properly. So far, it must be connected to where it creates the section in the device manager "Unknown Devices" and appears in its drop down list. I'm still tryin' guys. Thanks for the help so far!

Hmm, try this. Connect your device and use it as PTP not MTP. Then install your drivers.

Already attempted. It seemed to alleviate the connection issues for a little bit, but the drivers still wont install the right way.

Quite the coincidence we posted around the same time. But yeah, still giving me trouble. I will try to tackle it again tonight, but if I can't find a solution soon, I suppose I'll at least get the unlocking and rooting done on the laptop I spoke of, then for future stuff, try to get the ADB working on my PC.
You can do what i did and just download one of the toolkits to install the drivers.

Toolkits? You mean like Wug's? I am using his Nexus Toolkit, or trying to rather. The issue lies within getting the Nexus 7 to stay connected correctly as an "Unknown Device" in Device Manager, in which to properly install the drivers to get Windows to identify it as an "Android Device" and have the ADB recognized successfully.

I actually enjoy Vista. It had a rough start, but still. I don't think it's Vista because my gf's laptop runs it too, and when I tried connecting and doing everything with it, none of the connecting and disconnecting crap happened. I'm thinking there's a setting or something I'm overlooking on my own PC that's causing it in particular to do it.

I have windows 7 64 bit and it worked fine until out of nowhere my pc stopped recognizing my phone as a storage drive. i have tried multiple roms, and it makes no difference. The option to mount in the pull down curtain menu is no longer there, am i the only one who has had this problem?
If it turns out to be defective, is there any way to return the phone to stock, like with the ruu, that does not require a usb connection?

Unplug your phone from computer, enable USB debugging
uninstall HTC sync and HTC drivers from computer
Then Reinstall HTC Sync.
then plug in your phone once its done installing
Tried, thats a no-go. any other ideas?
Forgot to note that the htc sync option DOES appear in the pull down menu when usb is connected.

I am also having a problem with Windows 7. I deleted and reinstalled HTC sync and drivers and got "no driver found" for ADB. While it was installing it said it was unable to find a Windows Vista folder so that could be part of the problem
I dont think thats my problem, my computer doesnt see adb on the device manager list.. i have tried on a windows xp pc and it doesnt see my phone either, or ask me to install anything. so there is no way to RUU without usb?
uninstall any programs that may use adb usb... easy tether, pdanet, htc sync, the cdma workshop and htc diag drivers if you were trying to get msl using your own method, go to device manager and remove android usb devices, and then plug your phone back in. Also use a task killer to ensure none of the above programs are running on your phone, in case one got corrupted. if still no go let me know... I am running win 7 64 bit so can help compare, etc. if need be.
Well part of the problem is that android usb devices does not even show up in the device manager. should i still try to uninstall adb from my pc?
okay, under programs and features in control panel, uninstall htc driver and htc sync, restart computer and redownload and install htc sync from their website, and try that.
I tried those steps, still didnt work.
after you reinstall sync and plug in your phone, what happens? does the driver installer pop up and install? what does it say?
does android usb devices show up under device manager? are you sure it's not your cable (just cause it charges and makes a sound on the comp like it's connecting doesn't mean the data lines are fully intact and working). nothing pops up when i plug in. and also nothing appears in device manager. htc sync does actually show up on my phone when i plug in though.
i dont think its the cable.. it looks ok on the outside.

Interesting, interesting. In device manager, you stated that ADB doesn't show up? Well, does anything pertaining to Android show up at all?
Nothing pertaining to android at all. I hope im not screwed, because then i would have paid 7 bucks a month extra for insurance for no reason.

I had a similiar problem. I use Windows 7 Pro 64bit.

That's exactly how I felt when I got it working. Well i'm glad it worked for you. Hopefully it works for the OP.
i followed thos steps to a T, and still no luck. That guide failed me at the step when you select your phone from devices and printers; my phone is not there at all. I also tried manually installing the drivers, and it says that method of install is not supported.
try this.... go to windows/system32/drivers folder. Find adroidusb.sys, back up this file and then delete, and try plugging in your phone and seeing if it reinstalls drivers then
I am very impressed with my Galaxy Tab 10.1, but I'm having a glaring problem: my PC won't detect it as a storage device. This is the one that came with 3.1 out of the box, and I assumed that it would connect to my PC and play perfectly with it. I guess I've been spoiled by how my HTC Evo always connected perfectly to my PC with no issues or no drivers for me to hunt down and install, because it didn't work.
Okay, no sweat, I just need to download the drivers and install them, right? I did just that as well. I connect the tablet to the PC (which runs Windows 7 64-bit), and the PC gives me notifications saying my device is ready to use, but I can't find it as a storage device at all under My Computer. I do find it in my "Devices and Printers" list, but it doesn't show up with the rest of my devices at the top (it shows up with unspecified devices or something at the bottom of the list with a generic-looking icon representing it).
Okay, I probably need to just uninstall the drivers and maybe reinstall them and try again, right? Did just that, no dice. The exact same thing happens. On the tablet, I also probably need to point out that the only thing I get is the "USB Debugging Detected" notification or whatever it says while Windows 7 doesn't pick it up.
So now I ask what everybody else did to get theirs recognized. And I already tried switching USB ports and checking for updates. No dice there, either.
Wow, I feel like an idiot after solving this problem, but just so I can spare anybody else who has the same issue the trouble of going through this, I'll post what the solution was for me.
Unplug the tablet and disable USB debugging on the tablet first, then plug it back in and it'll be picked up as a generic cell phone by My Computer. Hope this helps somebody in the future. Heh...
Honestly, I really didn't think that would solve the problem, and I did search beforehand and found nothing of the sort telling me that doing just that would have fixed the problem.
Let me start by stating that I have read through pages of various threads on here & haven't found an answer... Or at least I haven't found an answer in laymen's terms that I can understand. So, if/when offering help, please break it down for me a little. Thank you!!
I just purchased a Nexus 7. When I plug it in to my Windows 7 PC, nothing happens. It doesn't install any device drivers. It doesn't appear anywhere in my device manager. Nothing. After reading several posts, I downloaded drivers from Asus's site, but now I don't know how to install them. I came across this comment from "MrTrackZed" in another thread (one I can't yet post in):
"After you download the driver, unzip/extract its contents. Then you go to your device manager on your PC, and plug in your Nexus. You'll see it with a yellow exclamation point, right click it and select update driver. You can then select this driver manually. Also, if using Wug's root method, make sure you configure the fastboot driver as well. I don't have my PC with me, but I believe its step 6 in the driver install process. Its all very easy, sounds confusing, but its not. Good luck! "
I totally understand that, but what do I do if the device isn't even showing up in the device manager? I've plugged it in to 3 different computers (2 windows 7 & one Windows XP) and it does nothing on any of them. The device does show that it's charging, but nothing else. Please help. This is driving me nuts. Oh, and I've done all of this while having debugging on & off. Same results.

U may just have a bad device! I have seen posts similar to this and after a device exchange they have no problems.
The fact that It doesn't register on three different computers means that or a bad cable.

When you plugin your phone, on your phone, you need to click USB Storage, did you do that?
Another thing to try is to enable Debuging on your phone, and install drivers, to check if device manager can detect it.
We have a package contains the right drivers for your device, you may want to download and try it. We have Nexus 7 users works fine.

I did as you suggested & installed both the PC client & downloaded the app from google play. Still nothing... The device works perfectly except for this one issue. It's making me crazy!
can you run this command to debug? (open a command window on Windows)

It just occured to me that some USB cable is charging only, this morning, I got such a cable, there is no USB device showing up in device manager with that USB cable, once I switched to another data cable, it works.
You may want to change to another usb cable to test.
Problem Identified
Okay, so after much research, I think the problem has been identified. The one thing that I've found in common with all the threads that discuss this problem is that we've all, at one point or another, used a USB car charger to charge our N7. I've found that most cheap USB chargers only put out at about 1 amp. The N7 is trying to pull 2 amps. This is causing the USB cable to overheat & damage the USB connector on the N7. Unfortunately, once the damage is done, it's done. Fortunately for me, I purchased my N7 at a local retailer that had a 30 day return policy & they gave me a new N7. It works great & I've ordered a 2.1 amp USB car charger to prevent this from happening in the future.

Thank you for the reply, but I am using the OEM N7 USB cable. Plus, I used 3 other cables to no avail. See my previous comment though. I've identified the error.
Sorry for the bump, but are you saying that (under)charging at 1A essentially breaks the N7? Wow. You'd think it would break if you'd feed it 5A or so, not at less than 2!
I think I'm having the same issue now. I can charge, but no debugging for me since my computer doesn't even notice a USB device. Must have happened in my car once when I was trying to charge my phone and my N7 at the same time. (Since then I can't charge any phone at all in the car using that charger.) Let's see if I can find the warranty slip.
Im aware that one or two other threads have been created with this same general question but one thing they didnt ask is what to do if you cant fix it?
As the thread topic states my Nexus 7 will not connect to my PC via USB (It is not seen at all, its not a driver issue I've tried). It will not charge when turned on but it was charging when turned off last night. When I checked this morning it said I had a full battery but after turning the tablet on it said I only had 60% battery. All the started happening after I charged it with a battery pack at work the other day because I forgot my charger at home (some people have had similar problems after using car chargers). It will let me connect a flash drive to it via USB-OTG. I have tried 3 different cables on 2 different PCs (One running Windows 7 and the other running Windows 8). I really dont know where to go for help anymore as Ive spent the past 2-3 days googling like a mad man trying to find an answer and noone seems to have one.
I would love for someone to really help me out and get some steps that could fix this, however, if its not fixable how do I RMA it? I cant lock the bootloader and I cant flash a factory image.
You say it is not a driver issue, but your symptoms indicate it is. I would start over with the removal and re-installation of the proper drivers.

I've uninstalled them. Every time I go to manually install them the guides always say to find where the nexus is and my nexus never shows up. If it was drivers it would still charge when its on. So how can drivers cause the tablet not to charge from the ac adapter?
Try Wugfresh's program. I had issues w/o it.

Thats the toolkit I have installed. Its also the "guide" I am following when it comes to drivers. I tried to see if I could make the nexus connect to the pc while in fastboot and nothing happened then either. Everything he says to do involves the PC actually seeing the nexus :/
Ive changed it from mtp to ptp, toggled debugging, went to different back ups, flashed a new rom, etc etc. I really feel like Ive tried just about everything. Someone mentioned in one thread about some specific code in the nexus being wrong and possibly changing it could fix it but I do not know how I would go about doing that.
I also originally used the Wugfresh toolkit and had problems getting the drivers installed properly on Win7-64. Ultimately, I think I installed pda.net on my computer and on the N7 and was able to connect after that. Haven't had a problem connecting since. Re-read some of the Wugfresh posts about driver problems. You should be able to get it sorted out.

I sent you a PM but I really dont think this is an issue with drivers. I have been able to connect the N7 to my PC perfectly before the other day. Never a problem at all. Now I have uninstalled/reinstalled the drivers as best as I could (currently I have the samsung drivers because they are the only ones that will install without having to verify that the phone is connected via ADB and I had them left over from my Fiance's GNex so they have been here all along when the N7 was actually connecting).
The N7 is not connecting to the PC at all. It does not show up in device manager. You cannot make an ADB connection to it. It has already been rooted and it is running the latest version of Paranoid Android. On top of that the AC adapters will not charge the N7 while it is turned on. Its like the N7 turns away any usb connection other than a USB-OTG cable while it is on.
Also I really do appreciate the help. This has just been really frustrating for me.

Since yesterday, I have exactly same issue with my Nexus 7 3g.
Everything is working perfectly but computer doesn't see Nexus at all (nothig works Bootloader, ADB, MTP,PTP).
Charging is fine (looks like), USB HDDs, pendrives are working as before.
Reinstaling drivers, changing to PTP, switchin on/off USB debugging didn't help.
Checked : other Nexus connects to the computer without problems, so its not drivers issue.
I assume it happened after Nexus was connected to my car charger.
Does anybody have solution/fix for that ?
Unfortunately my Nexus comes from USA, can I RMA it in Europe ?
I feel badly for everyone having these issues. I feel very lucky I'm not having them. It sounds as if the microusb port may have been altered/damaged by certain kinds of connections, like the battery pack or car charger. I don't know why this would happen and my own car charger (Moto oem for my Bionic) has worked fine on the N7. I did pick up the usb cable attached to my pc one day and created a static shock to the connector. Since then, that bank of 4 usb ports will not show either my N7 or bionic, but my usb mouse, keyboard, and printer work with them. The other bank still works, as does the pci port expansion card and my front ports. If I do have a glitch with the pc connection, I restart both the computer and the N7 and then it works. Sorry I don't have a solution.
I also assumed a damaged/fried USB post on the Nexus 7. There are 2 data lines and 2 power lines in the charging socket I think. If the power lines are damaged, usb otg may still be working. Its also tying in with the use of a power pack.

Have you tried switching between MTP and PTP and seeing if that works? If I used the PTP setting for the USB it shows up, I can then move files onto the PICTURE folder and once there move to another folder while using the Nexus.

Wow or strange should be more of the reply. I have done this before but it never worked. Thanks for the help. For anyone else needing help here is what I did. First opened the Nexus Tool Kit, then Full Driver Installation Guide, launched USBDeview, then - In particular look for devices with Vendor ID - "18d1" or... "04e8" - Simply right click these devices, and select the option to: - "Uninstall Selected Devices", final step unplugged the device and plugged it back in and it worked. Also MTP enabled USB Debug unchecked. Thanks again...

Tried this and haven't had any luck so far. I'm going to try pdanet or samsung drivers again later today and post results.

Have exactly the same trouble. I'm with you guys. USB host works, no reaction in device manager. Did your nexus was unlocked? Rooted?

I'm experiencing similar issues with my Nexus 5. This is the only thead I can find that has a similar problem. My Nexus 5 worked on SlimKat, I flashed stock L Preview, now my device won't charge when it is powered into the OS. Bootloader works fine and charges when turned off. I upgraded to 5.0 which came out today (Yay!) and the problem persists.
Have any of you lads or ladies had any updates?

In my case it was a hardware trouble. Fixed by motherboard replacing in official service centre.
Want to start this by saying I'm pretty sure this is a pc issue rather than phone issue, I've had similar problems with every android I've owned. I installed drivers through the Nexus 4 toolkit and the tutorial by thesmokingandroid, my PC doesn't even acknowledge the phone. I get the beep when it connects and disconnects but the phone doesn't show up anywhere like my computer or device manager at all. Like I said my older phones would connect most of the time but almost always randomly disconnect/connect. I feel like it's likely a driver thing, never had problems with my iPhones or other things like mouse or keyboard. Is there a way other than a clean windows install to just clean my pc of any android related things like SDK or drivers? Also it's a custom built pc with 5 ports running win7, no ports will work. I added an in tower sd hub and feel like the problems might have started around then but I'm not sure on that. Any suggestions would be nice, not being able to connect my phone is an issue with no removable memory...
edit: Wanted to add that sometimes when I only have my mouse, keyboard, and Xbox controller connected I get those little connect/disconnect beeps at random and the bubble that says this device can perform faster. I'm pretty sure my ports are 2.0 too but I'm not sure how to check that.

I having the same problem. When I'm in fastboot mode my pc doesn't show my phone but when my phone is powered on it shows up on my pc. Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?
Anyone? I'm ready to try reinstalling Windows but would really like to know if there's something a less time consuming I could try first. I can't root or anything so I'm going to have to try something soon.
Same thing happens to me a couple days ago.
My laptop recognized the phones, but it showed nowhere in Device Manager. Adb could see my phone, but as soon as I went to bootloader, my laptop said An USB port is unrecognized
SOLUTION: I use Nexus Root Tool Kit and Google NExus 4 Tool Kit to REMOVE the nexus 4 driver, everything related to nexus 4 is removed. I only used these tools to uninstall the driver, not to install them.
Then I turned off the Windows 7's Automatic Update Driver by Window Update (or some similar names). This is important, because the driver that windows install autimatically doesn't covery the Bootloader Driver. I dont remember how exactly I turned the Automatical Diver Update off. Maybe when the popup "unrecognized USB" appear, I pressed it and there was an option to do that. Or you can search google.

Restart my computer after that. THen download driver from this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2010312 ONly the driver.
THen Install it from DEvice Manager by plugging my phone again.

In my case,there was no wpdmtp.inf file in windows/inf,hence device wasnt recognised.

Yeah, what causes so much trouble for me is the Windows-7-automatic-driver-installation. It helped me sometimes, but not with the NExus 4 :|
