hey,
uhm i use apps2sd+ in nexusHD2 gingerbread rom and apps are being succesfully installed in my ext4 partition.
but why is internal storage decreasing, when its not being installed in there. i read somewhere to just reboot and it'll jump back. well it does only a few mb, but its definatly decreasing... almost as much as my ext4 storage lol.
my ext4 is 1gb big, and my prognosis is that internal storage will be full after installing 300-400 mb on ext4... whats the benefit of apps2sd+ then?
i have about 50 mb on ext4 (i flashed yesterday) and internal storage decreased about 30 mb lol
i hope you guys understand what i mean

I moved dalvik-cache on my Nexus one, and I have class 4 SD, I don't notice any difference.
And I have TMOUS HD2, so I didn't do any App2sd, I'm not sure it has the same affect as on Nexus one.

according to j disk benchmark my write performance is 5,88MB/s, so this should be class 4, too right?
edit: i have slower values for nand storage test
Looking for number on your SD, if you don't see any number, it's likely class 2.
Have you checked out /dev/block/mmcblk0p12 on your device?
It's a ~500MB partition, that just seems to be reserved for GameHub (it's not mounted by default, it's just THERE... mine happens to have some hidden ngmoco content on it).
I feel we could make better use of this, thoughts? I wonder if we'd get a good boost by formatting it as swap for example?
Fellow devs, share your thoughts...
P
Do we really need swap on a phone with 1 GB of RAM?
No, not necessarily, that's my point... it's silly to be wasting nearly half a gig tho...

Oh yes, that is a brilliant idea!
There are issues with /data conflicts between ROMs, but assuming the ROMs aren't too wildly different, it could work!
Another option would be to use it for dalvik-cache to save space on /data?
P
Having a play with the swap option just for fun!
Code:
# free
total used free shared buffers
Mem: 853048 512220 340828 0 19616
Swap: 524284 0 524284
Total: 1377332 512220 865112

I'm away for a week from tomorrow, but when I get back I might rustle up a 'Dual ROM switcher'...
P
Mr O'Brian on fire as usual.
How much work would be involved in modifying CWM to boot from either partition? Is that even possible?
That'd be cool!
You can make a multi boot script just editing some of the boot scripts - no actual need to modify CWM

My vote goes to using it for dalvik-cache and increase data by 500MB
Or we could use it to add an extra 500mb of space available for the user in the internal SD.They are on the same memory chip, right?Reformatting both and merging them sounds about right.
That's if we don't find something better.
As for the second rom thing,I have an idea. What if we use that space as a secondary /system,and split a 1-2gb of space from the internal SD to use as /data for the second rom? That way, only the boot scripts would need modifying, unless I am missing something that I shouldn't be missing.
I believe ODIN has that function to repartition. would it be right to say that as long as the custom rom to be flashed would actually mount/recognize the partitions properly then the phone should boot as per normal with the new sizes then just soft/hardlink the folder ?
just thinking out loud.
Brilliant ideas, if it works we can have a dual boot with HTC Sense n Meego... until a new mobile OS joins in

Dual boot seems like a nice option to do.....maybe running cm7 and stock simultaneosly.....dalviks-cache is a good idea too, but as it is now, its more than enouh for me....that one would depend on users data usage. Swap memory, yeah 1 gb for android is more than enough. Maybe we could initially use it for storage of cwm backups (which shouldnt be to hard to do), then move on to dual booting or whatever is decided.
Why didnt I see that partition before?...**facepalm**

I personally would use the block 12 for general file storage, and as a place for tweaks to be processed (sorta like a scratch filesystem in photoshop and adobe software). I use /cache for it right now, but you never know when it might come in handy...

First thing that came to mind after reading Paul's post. Good thinking Batman!
Turns out that everytime I try to download an app, say around 12MB, the download fails handing me a big fat error saying there is insufficient space. Bull****. I have lots of space (like 800MB) left of A2SD storage and the internal is around 90MB left, and A2SD fully works. I have had this error before but I do not know how I solved it.
I also know all the basic methods of trying to get this to work, but they all fail.
I have tried wiping market data
I have tried wiping market cache
I have tried deleting market updates
I have tried wiping cache and dalvik cache
I have tried reflashing the ROM
I have tried reinstalling the A2SD script and tried moving dalvik back to internal
I have tried searching Google for answers, but came up with nothing I haven't tried already.
I have tried a combination of ALL the above and ALL options together.
I dunno what's wrong but I simply can't get it to work.
i would probably use "df" to see which partition it is writing when downloading and whether it is 100% full ?
I had the same problem with Evervolv ICS p8 while having 14MB free space in /system partition. I moved a few apps to /data partition giving /system a total of 20MB free space, and bingo: I could install apps again

I use the ICS hboot scheme, i.e. 220 mb system, 16 mb cache and 200 mb data. I never bothered flashing another hboot as I may switch to ICS at any time, plus someone once told me that 96 mb cache (as per stock) is way too much and that 16 is more than enough. I have around 14 mb available cache and I clean it from time to time.
Also note that this problem started when I flashed MIUI. Worked perfectly to download large apps with GB/CM7/ICS/CM9.
CM7 redirects space onto data when cache too small. I don't think MIUI does that. Try at least 30mb and see.
I have both hboots in tools and only takes a minute to switch them

If the only solution is to switch hboot, then I'm going to reconsider flashing CM7, CM9 or some other build as I want to keep the hboot flashing to a minimum.

It's not that I'm that afraid of flashing hboot, it's just that I don't want to wear out the nand and I don't think it's worth switching hboot if I'm going to flash ICS anytime soon. I only run MIUI temporarily. ICS rocks
That is what i took it to mean--nand wearout--but by the time that happens for us non devs, we will all be on quadcores that make us coffee--

Anyways, not being able to download any big apps really isn't a huge concern seeing as I've downloaded relatively small apps thus far. i remember downloading Firefox while running ICS a "long" time ago.
Ones like Angry Birds may be an issue too--
Yeah, I wouldn't worry. I have flashed hundreds of times and coming up on two years. But, like i said, if you keep each hboot in tools, 30 seconds and your done--

It looks like I misunderstand the Fire's memory partitioning..
When I look at the partitioning my Fire running CM9 nightly's from Hashcode, I see its got 528mb for System ROM (281 free), 1.17Gb Internal (975 mb free) and 5.36Gb for the SDcard partition. I thought that layout was standard. That's more than 5Gb for the SDCard though, right ?
Adding that up I get only about 7Gb accounted for, so I am for sure missing something. Recovery partition for TWRP maybe ?
I got these numbers from Titanium Backup Pro, so maybe its not telling me stuff I don't need to know about.
You are saying you can increase the SDCard partition from 5.36Gb to 6Gb by reducing the size of the Internal partition ?
If so, would that limit the number and size of the programs you could install on your Fire, but give you more room for music and stuff ?
Thanks,
Glenn

It wouldn't limits the number of programs, but you'd probably have to push them to the SD card for storage (some apps already do that though). But yeah, it'd give you more space for media too.

I have Android in NAND and I was running out of memory. So I made an partition on my SD. So that apps automaticly are going to install on my SD. That partition was 2GB. I use a ton of apps and within a week the partition was full. So how can I make that partition bigger WITHOUT losing any data?
Do a full cwm backup (titanium backup too, just in case)and also backup the fat partition of the SD card, reformat to desired size, then in cwm choose backup/restore, advanced - restore sd-ext, then restore your fat partition stuff too(important that bit, because there's android stuff on the fat partition too)
you can potentially just do a full restore from cwm rather than a selective sd-ext restore, but id try the selective restore first.

Most of the scripts have to be flashed right before instalation of the rom.
So flash a script in a rom with all the apps already installed is not a good idea.
