Turns out that everytime I try to download an app, say around 12MB, the download fails handing me a big fat error saying there is insufficient space. Bull****. I have lots of space (like 800MB) left of A2SD storage and the internal is around 90MB left, and A2SD fully works. I have had this error before but I do not know how I solved it.
I also know all the basic methods of trying to get this to work, but they all fail.
I have tried wiping market data
I have tried wiping market cache
I have tried deleting market updates
I have tried wiping cache and dalvik cache
I have tried reflashing the ROM
I have tried reinstalling the A2SD script and tried moving dalvik back to internal
I have tried searching Google for answers, but came up with nothing I haven't tried already.
I have tried a combination of ALL the above and ALL options together.
I dunno what's wrong but I simply can't get it to work.
i would probably use "df" to see which partition it is writing when downloading and whether it is 100% full ?
I had the same problem with Evervolv ICS p8 while having 14MB free space in /system partition. I moved a few apps to /data partition giving /system a total of 20MB free space, and bingo: I could install apps again

I use the ICS hboot scheme, i.e. 220 mb system, 16 mb cache and 200 mb data. I never bothered flashing another hboot as I may switch to ICS at any time, plus someone once told me that 96 mb cache (as per stock) is way too much and that 16 is more than enough. I have around 14 mb available cache and I clean it from time to time.
Also note that this problem started when I flashed MIUI. Worked perfectly to download large apps with GB/CM7/ICS/CM9.
CM7 redirects space onto data when cache too small. I don't think MIUI does that. Try at least 30mb and see.
I have both hboots in tools and only takes a minute to switch them

If the only solution is to switch hboot, then I'm going to reconsider flashing CM7, CM9 or some other build as I want to keep the hboot flashing to a minimum.

It's not that I'm that afraid of flashing hboot, it's just that I don't want to wear out the nand and I don't think it's worth switching hboot if I'm going to flash ICS anytime soon. I only run MIUI temporarily. ICS rocks
That is what i took it to mean--nand wearout--but by the time that happens for us non devs, we will all be on quadcores that make us coffee--

yeah, I guess I'm worrying for nothing
Anyways, not being able to download any big apps really isn't a huge concern seeing as I've downloaded relatively small apps thus far. i remember downloading Firefox while running ICS a "long" time ago.
Ones like Angry Birds may be an issue too--
Yeah, I wouldn't worry. I have flashed hundreds of times and coming up on two years. But, like i said, if you keep each hboot in tools, 30 seconds and your done--

I am in a frustrating battle trying to keep space free on my phone. I am to the point of deleting apps I really would not want to if I had the space available. So my question is, do any of the ROMS offer more app install space?
And FWIW, I have done apps2sd, cleared all the caches I can clear, and everything else people suggest to do. Thanks for any help!
Not an answer to your question but out of curiosity what apps are you using on a daily basis? I find that my "core" apps that I need plus an extra app here and there all install usually leave me with about 30MB free space. of course at this point i'm not using a lot and I don't have many games installed(just monopoly). I'm using cyanogenmod 6.1

When you say you have done app2sd, so you mean stock Froyo or app2ext?
If you are having this issue with app2ext, then you need to make a larger ext part.
You can also move your Dalvik-Cache to /cache or /sdcard, but only if you have ext part for the /sdcard move to work.
You need to change the partition table (by flashing a custom HBOOT) to get more space on /data, and as far as I know, no-one has done it.
Use good old Apps2EXT aka Apps2SD+ aka DarkTremor's Apps2SD. Read the Wiki to find the link, or just go to Development section and look there. Partition your SD card, make 512MB or larger EXT data partition, and you're done for all the foreseeable future.
How could you avoid reading about it and read all the rest - escapes me.

Here are the top-10 space-hogging apps I have (and some of them are partially moved to /sdcard!):
Google Maps: 10.13 MB
Rock Player: 8.80 MB
SlingPlayer Mobile: 8.64 MB
Facebook: 7.40 MB
Adobe Flash Player: 7.09 MB
Twitter: 5.08 MB
Google Voice Search: 4.44 MB
Google Voice: 3.78 MB
Skyfire: 3.34 MB
Google Goggles: 2.60 MB
That's 61.3 MB in 10 apps alone...
I have 200MB in apps alone, not counting their data or Dalvik cache (together they come up to 380MB). It's not about having "core" apps and "rare" apps, it's about having the apps that I want to use. Some of them I use often, some of them I use rarely, but I don't have apps that I never use.
I am in a Similar situation, using DarkTremors Apps2sd. I havent done cache2sd because i am using a class 2 sd card, and have been advised against it.
I set up a 512mb partition, and have moved all my apps away from apps2fat, but max free space i get is about 32mb, after clearing the cache of both my browsers.
Check the size of your Dalvik cache, and do Dalvik2cache if it's under 80MB.
I have Class2 16GB SD card and I ran out of space on /cache, so I moved Dalvik to SD and didn't notice any performance hits.

I have about 32m free with Darktremors, which is actually less than if I move apps to SD using Titanium.
Might try moving dalkiv.

One way to get a bit of space back is to move the updated ROM apps to the /system/app partition, replacing the older versions and deleting the new versions out of /data/app. I've done that with Maps, Voice, Goggles, and YouTube. You should be able to do it with Twitter and Facebook as well--I don't use them and so just removed them from the ROM altogether. You can find details on doing this via a Google search, though I could post my procedure in this thread if anyone's interested.

Be VERY careful when moving your Dalvik-Cache to /cache. It's only 90MB and not used if you are running a custom ROM. The /cache partition is only there to stage OTA's from Google. If you are running custom recovery, it won't be used.
Anyway, I would HIGHLY suggest you get yourself a Class 6 Card or better and move it to SD. It will free up a TON more space and stretch out your love of your N1.

Yeah....I had space issues until I moved Dalvik to SD, freed over 80mb space. But if I remember right, I had some issues when doing this and had to wipe and do a fresh install, move dalvik and apps, then restore. Or maybe that was when I tried dalvik to cache.....which would explain why it was bad.

I've been doing it with an Orange San Francisco this morning, it's easy, just use busybox to cp the .apk files from /data/app to /system/app, the ones in /data/app were automatically removed by the OS.
Yeah, why the hell do you have so much of that those apps in /data/apps when you could just put them in /system/apps which is a different storage.
I could put Facebook there too but i only install about 7-10apps on my phone. Angry Birds being the biggest but that's on the SD card (Froyo A2SD). After all my apps i probably have 170MB free in the DATA. Granted i'm not installing 60apps like some people here but i'm sure if you put Facebook and Google Maps in the system (along with twitter and all that other stuff that come included in the GAPPS zip file) then you'd have more free space. After a clean install i usually have 196MB free to start from.

So you're not doing anything fancy, just copy the apk's? They are named exactly the same, etc?
I'm going to try this too.. Gonna visit the ole nandroid first though.
derp, wait, this doesn't even matter if you're using Apps2Ext right? Not going to save any space in /data in that case.
BTW, this isn't exactly pretty, but I was having some serious /data space issues since installing Dungeon Hunter.. 6.5m library in /data/data/*gameloft*/lib, so I mkdir /system/sd/gameloft and moved/symlinked the lib. Works great. I have a few other libs in /data/data that I could do, but for now this gets me back to 25M free.
Still fighting moving dalvik to SD but I imagine I'll be doing that eventually.
Have you checked out /dev/block/mmcblk0p12 on your device?
It's a ~500MB partition, that just seems to be reserved for GameHub (it's not mounted by default, it's just THERE... mine happens to have some hidden ngmoco content on it).
I feel we could make better use of this, thoughts? I wonder if we'd get a good boost by formatting it as swap for example?
Fellow devs, share your thoughts...

Do we really need swap on a phone with 1 GB of RAM?
No, not necessarily, that's my point... it's silly to be wasting nearly half a gig tho...

Oh yes, that is a brilliant idea!
There are issues with /data conflicts between ROMs, but assuming the ROMs aren't too wildly different, it could work!
Another option would be to use it for dalvik-cache to save space on /data?

Mr O'Brian on fire as usual.
How much work would be involved in modifying CWM to boot from either partition? Is that even possible?
That'd be cool!
You can make a multi boot script just editing some of the boot scripts - no actual need to modify CWM

My vote goes to using it for dalvik-cache and increase data by 500MB
Or we could use it to add an extra 500mb of space available for the user in the internal SD.They are on the same memory chip, right?Reformatting both and merging them sounds about right.
That's if we don't find something better.
As for the second rom thing,I have an idea. What if we use that space as a secondary /system,and split a 1-2gb of space from the internal SD to use as /data for the second rom? That way, only the boot scripts would need modifying, unless I am missing something that I shouldn't be missing.
I believe ODIN has that function to repartition. would it be right to say that as long as the custom rom to be flashed would actually mount/recognize the partitions properly then the phone should boot as per normal with the new sizes then just soft/hardlink the folder ?
just thinking out loud.
Brilliant ideas, if it works we can have a dual boot with HTC Sense n Meego... until a new mobile OS joins in

Dual boot seems like a nice option to do.....maybe running cm7 and stock simultaneosly.....dalviks-cache is a good idea too, but as it is now, its more than enouh for me....that one would depend on users data usage. Swap memory, yeah 1 gb for android is more than enough. Maybe we could initially use it for storage of cwm backups (which shouldnt be to hard to do), then move on to dual booting or whatever is decided.
Why didnt I see that partition before?...**facepalm**

Hey friends,,
I've lately facing a problem with my galaxy 3. Lately i've been using custom ROM's based on JPU and the internal memory is getting low too quickly. It's like the apps take the double of its real size, so i can't have even more than 15 apps that my internal memory is already gone...
To realize if it's the custom ROM or not, I've tried the original froyo version I5800XXJPU and have got the same problem. Initially the total free memory was 170mb, after the system updates (gmail, market, google search...) it decreased to 130mb, and after just installing the facebook and facebook messenger it's about to 100mb
I don't use Hybrid Data2sd, because i simply don't like it and had some problems with it last time. And yes, i move the apps to the sd card in the own system interface.
Am I doing something wrong? Someone knows how to solve it?

One simple thing - DEODEX
When you deodex the dalvik cache goes to /data for /system/app and ../framework also.. I am on ODEX and it's good enough.. PS - You need to odex manually or download a pure stock ROM or some odexed custom ROM..

I think dalvik cache rewrites itself after it's wipe

Where do you have only 500mb left? Meaning /data/media or /cache (not /dalvik-cache).
Try going into Setting>Apps> Gallery, Playstore, video player, music player and wiping the Cache there. Gallery is a cache hog, so is Browser and Playstore.
Once you get that cleaned out, you should be able to download something from the market. I suggest Cache Cleaner NG. It is a cache cleaner that you can set to run everyday, week, month. I have mine set to run every morning before I wake up so my tablet is fresh and clean and ready to use.

Clearing cache from recovery is not the same. Go into those apps and wipe them there.
Also, take look in /data/log and see if anything is in there. I just read about someone yesterday that had 11gb of useless entries in there. If there is anything in that file, just delete it (it isn't needed) and the set the permission to User-R and the rest blank and you would get those files anymore.
If all else fails, just delete something from your internal that you can replace later on from your PC (like some music or video) and that way you'll clear out some space to download a cleaner from the market.

Just trying to troubleshoot here man. Use a file explorer and look around to see if anything sticks out.
Might be time to do a factory reset and clean house (as a last resort) unless someone else has any ideas.
Good luck.
You need to have at least 512MB on your internal memory to be able to instal more programs. There is no fix for that.

This might be the answer...
I've deleted a lot of stuff and apps and now I have 1.2GB an I installed couple of apps successfully!
He is correct, 512 is the limit, you will also notice the system slows ALOT after this point, I like to use my MicroSD for alot of things for this reason.
Also glad I read the 'log' tip, I had a 600Mb log just sitting there. X.x
I get this insufficient space error when titanium backup runs a scheduled backup. I have 18gb free and when I manually do a backup it works like a charm. Odd behavior. Sorry, I don't have any suggestions; just wanted to let you know you are not alone.

I do use a 16GB microSD BUT the problem is that I have 10GB of apps/games! -_-
Try Apps2SD or a similar app.
I know for sure that the huge amounts of resource files used by games like Shadowgun and GTAIII can be stored on the MicroSD, freeing alot.

Probably /data is on the verge of running out of available inodes, do you have a lot of small files on it?
I have Android in NAND and I was running out of memory. So I made an partition on my SD. So that apps automaticly are going to install on my SD. That partition was 2GB. I use a ton of apps and within a week the partition was full. So how can I make that partition bigger WITHOUT losing any data?
Do a full cwm backup (titanium backup too, just in case)and also backup the fat partition of the SD card, reformat to desired size, then in cwm choose backup/restore, advanced - restore sd-ext, then restore your fat partition stuff too(important that bit, because there's android stuff on the fat partition too)
you can potentially just do a full restore from cwm rather than a selective sd-ext restore, but id try the selective restore first.

A little bit off topic, but what kind of apps are you talking about?
I have over 100 apps, and my 1GB ext partition is not even half full.
Are you sure it's 2GB ?

+1 - I have a fair number of apps including games and stuff, most of which are in my EXT partiton, and yet I have only used up around 350MB. Are you linking the libs files as well?Or did you create a smaller partition than you thought, as Marvlesz suggested (perhaps 256MB)?

When I want to get something like Facebook, Maps or Songpop it says that I have not enough space those apps are around 10mb. When I go to settings it says that I have 28mb. But if I want to get something big like Minecraft it installs it without a problem.

What is the script that you're using for the sd-ext? Are you using link2sd?
(Pressed thanks by mistake )

You have to flash an a2sd script that suits your needs
EDIT:
Sorry, my fault. I know you're going to ask "what is that" and "where do I get it".
Here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1716124
I (just) hope that you will find all the information you need there.
Ohh, and before I go, don't ask us which is the best, there is no best .
And the one I'm using is this : INT2EXT+
Good luck

I installed INT2EXT+ and it f*cked up my rom. When I boot up I get only force closes. So it made my phone unusable. Had to flash my rom back.

Most of the scripts have to be flashed right before instalation of the rom.
So flash a script in a rom with all the apps already installed is not a good idea.

flash the script BEFORE the rom?? that would be a neat trick to see.
@op, i use int2ext+ with the aokp jb rom from that thread, , flash the rom, let it set up, (dont bother with for example google account details and what not, just let it set up till you see the desktop).reboot, flash the script(you HAVE created teh ext partition already right? cos this script doesnt create it), reboot, then install your apps and data and such .

Why don't people use the thanks button?
Start from page one, and press the "Thanks" button for everyone that helped you (or even just tried to), yes, including me.
That is better than saying "Thank you" a million times.
