I can see my Nexus 4 in Windows 7 and transfer files via the USB port on my laptop, but not with Linux Mint 13 KDE. Is anyone out there able to see their Nexus 4 via Linux Mint or any Linux OS using the USB port on their computer? If so how are you doing it?

Thanks Donniezazen, I found that the Webupd8 method didn't work just right for me so I made some modifications some others finding this thread may find helpful.
First I did as Webupd8 said but when it came to using the Unity script I could not find it. So I created 2 scripts (in my user directory with permissions for my user) called
mountnexus4.sh
go-mtpfs /media/MyAndroid

made them both executable and then dragged them to my toolbar creating a widget. Then created an image of a Nexus 4 and an image of a nexus 4 with a red not symbol on it. Changed the widgets icons and locked the toolbar. Result is when I click on one it mounts my Nexus 4 and the other un-mounts my Nexus 4. Works for me.

Has anyone tried the top link? I would love to have a dual booting machine. It says it is possible but they haven't had any luck with dual booting with Ubuntu. I like to try with windows and this seems to be the most user friendly and update to program.

I am just seeing this so haven't tried anything out but wanted to say I am running Windows 7 x64 and Ubuntu now. I have done it with other versions in the past.

If you have windows installed you just boot to the ubuntu cd and go through the setup. It will give you the option to resize the drive to make a partition for Ubuntu. Pick a size and go through the install. Once it is done when you boot you will have the option to boot from Windows or Ubuntu. If I remember right it will default to Ubuntu if you don't make a choice within the defined time. You can edit Grub to change that. You can do this to change it to windows if you prefer http://www.hackourlife.com/change-default-boot-order-ubuntu-10-04-lucid/.

You can also go to the Ubuntu website and you can download the windows installer that lets you dualboot if you didnt have a cd burner (or if its broke like mine lol) or if you dont wanna wait for the cd to be shipped.

Yeah you can use it for custom roms because it lets you edit the updater script. You could use it for themes, apps, scripts, kernels, or pretty much anything you wanna flash

Or you could edit the updater-script . But really, if your gonna get your hands dirty and make flashable zips you should look at someone elses first. Or, even write your own from scratch.

Yeah I splice roms together pretty often. Its not that hard but hey, why not just use a tool to make it simpler =)

But, then you don't know what's actually going on...I think it'd be better to know how to make it from scratch and not know how to use a tool, then it'd be to know how to use the tool and not how to make it from scratch.

There is currently not a solution for editing odf files on android. However, the LibreOffice team is hard at work porting the entire suite to Android.

Actually you can install lots of different versions of linux on your Nexus 7, including Ubuntu and Backtrack. Check this app. The Nexus 7 is on the supported list.

Actually cyanogenMod is just a customized version of Android, it's not a different OS. So i take that what you meant is installing a different ROM on your Nexus 7. Anyway you should start from here

He was just trying to help you. May be you should use search in the forums or use google. I typed linux on nexus 7 and found tons of results. Also there is a thread for Firefox OS in the Development forums. You would be much safer doing the linux inside android from the play store.

The complete Linux installer says it only works on certain supported kernels. I'm no expert, so is the stock kernel supported? I'd like to try Ubuntu on my rooted stock Nexus 7 2013. (32G)

gray screen
So guys,
I just try it and can't get it run...
I used Linux Installer and followed the guide.
But when I connect with VNC I only see a gray screen, allthough I started xstartup...
Please help...

Hi, I recently installed Ubuntu desktop on my Nexus 7 using multirom.
It all went well and works well if you use a mouse with an OTG cable, I understand it was meant for developers but has anyone been able to install the tegra 3 drivers and keep unity/taskbar working?
When I install the drivers and reboot, it boots up and looks better but doesn't have unity or the taskbar. I can get into terminal with a keyboard and pretty much everything can open but its not exactly usable this way.

Which Tegra 3 drivers are you talking about? Ubuntu Desktop for Nexus 7 should already come with all the drivers it needs.
Its very slow and doesn't play videos, only sound. Also, in "about this computer" or something like that, none of the hardware or even the devices name is recognized. Here's a link to it https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/raring/armhf/nvidia-tegra3/16.0-0ubuntu3

Yes, those drivers are already included in Ubuntu Desktop for Nexus 7. They do have issues though (lots of screen tearing). Playing video shouldn't be a problem though if you have the right codecs installed.

I see, I installed the codecs. Might be a problem with vlc only. Thanks.
Edit: in "about computer" none of the nexus 7 hardware is displayed, I thought its strange since the version was made specifically for the nexus, is this normal?

Yes that's normal. Canonical ported Ubuntu to the Nexus 7 solely to test it and optimize it for low-spec devices. They didn't do a whole lot to polish it up and make it presentable for end users because that wasn't really their goal

Is there any "easy" way to try out Ubuntu on grouper? I mean easy like flashing zip in recovery and then restore back to android...

Yeah man. Multirom is an app made for nexus devices that let's you multiboot ROM and distros. I've got cm11, ubunut and active plasma installed right now. Just read the how to's on this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2011403 and download the Ubuntu 13.04 from that page. If you want a few other distros for multirom get them here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2093797. It really is the easiest way to actually dual boot. And the dev is amazingly helpful. Don't hesitate to report a bug to him.

Hi Friends, I was wondering how to compile android from source for My MAKO Device ?
before anyone says that What the Heck ?? ____ I have been through many tutorials, unfortunatily those are for compiline CM which i am not able to clone on my Laptop due to some GIT access issue from my Workplace.
Further i followed the official documentation for compilind android on source.android.com and was able to bild the IMAGE but as soon as i flashed the Image My Nexus's scren got blank and nothing happened .
so, can someone please guide me on how to compile Android from Source (NO CM/ ETC.) for MAKO ..

AOSP (source.android.com) is android. Are you sure you compiled the right packages. That you included the prebuilts and everything?
Ya . I did everything step by step. And finally I got the images but after flashing the images on my N4 I got a blank screen after boot animation.

Did you compile for the right device? I believe the guide on source.android.com is for the emulator.
Well they also have a device guide, which i followed , do i have to manually add device driver binaries as i did not do that as ot was not there in the guide.

It is, maybe you should read it again to see if you haven't missed anything.

Another thing, is actually , when i compile the sorce, I get various images, bootloader.img, system.img, etc. So, How to make a flashable zip out of those, so i can test the rom on MultiRom on my device, rather than flashing from ground 0 , as nexus4 is my kinna daily driver mobile phone.
