So with the Update.zip creator, would this be used for custom ROM's or only updating the firmware?

Has anyone tried the top link? I would love to have a dual booting machine. It says it is possible but they haven't had any luck with dual booting with Ubuntu. I like to try with windows and this seems to be the most user friendly and update to program.

If you have windows installed you just boot to the ubuntu cd and go through the setup. It will give you the option to resize the drive to make a partition for Ubuntu. Pick a size and go through the install. Once it is done when you boot you will have the option to boot from Windows or Ubuntu. If I remember right it will default to Ubuntu if you don't make a choice within the defined time. You can edit Grub to change that. You can do this to change it to windows if you prefer http://www.hackourlife.com/change-default-boot-order-ubuntu-10-04-lucid/.

Yeah you can use it for custom roms because it lets you edit the updater script. You could use it for themes, apps, scripts, kernels, or pretty much anything you wanna flash

Or you could edit the updater-script . But really, if your gonna get your hands dirty and make flashable zips you should look at someone elses first. Or, even write your own from scratch.

Yeah I splice roms together pretty often. Its not that hard but hey, why not just use a tool to make it simpler =)

But, then you don't know what's actually going on...I think it'd be better to know how to make it from scratch and not know how to use a tool, then it'd be to know how to use the tool and not how to make it from scratch.

IHs it possible to instal linux

Hey all. Is it possible to instal linux on the swift? WITHOUT using androidVNC?
Sent from my GT540 using XDA Premium App
Always though android was linux based, can you sum androidVNC up in a few word for us?
As far as i know you can make a dual boot installing debian or ubuntu, but the whole replacement of the firmware i dont know!
that would be awsome when someone makes dual boot to our swift with ubuntu/android , i installed ubuntu , but it needed androidVNC, for graphical use, but without androidVNC , you can use terminal(commands)(without kde,gnome or something)
by the way, is it easy todo dual boot menu for our swift?
i've installed ubuntu on my pc , to start with that

You still expect that? I had this in my mind too but it's just too much of work. I mean modifying the boot loader completely needs a good amount of programming knowledge.

[CUSTOM .ZIP]Your own personalized flashable .zip - Inquire within!

I enjoy giving back to this community so I am going to do so in another way - its not a groundbreaking ROM or anything but just something small and helpful
When I flash between ROMs, there are little things I want to change (like the bootanimation, font's, etc) so I made my own update.zip with everything I want in it. It's not very hard to do, but it might be helpful for others.
So, if you would like me to make you your own customized .zip, just post in here telling me what you would like. Now, I'm a nice guy, but I don't want to go fishing for what you want. You need to post links to things and specify exactly what you'd like. It can be pretty much anything that you can currently flash in recovery and maybe even more (nothing comes to mind right now)
I don't know if there will be alot of interest in this or not, but just be patient and I will get you your .zip And this seems like the right place to post this, but if a mod feels it would be better elsewhere, feel free to move it.

A great tool for creating an update.zip. The hard part is the updater-script. One slightly wrong thing and the .zip won't flash. I would recommend looking at the updater-script located in /META-INF/com/google/android/ of any flashable .zip for the EVO. Here is an example from my zip...
mount("MTD", "system", "/system");
ui_print("");
set_progress(1.000000);
ui_print("Derek's Customization Pack");
show_progress(0.500000, 20);
ui_print("");
ui_print("Replacing boot animation...");
sleep(1);
show_progress(0.500000, 40);
package_extract_dir("system", "/system");
show_progress(0.500000, 80);
ui_print("");
ui_print("Replacing font...");
sleep(1);
ui_print("");
ui_print("Extracting customized build.prop...");
sleep(1);
unmount("/system");
show_progress(0.100000, 100);
ui_print("");
ui_print("Done!");

Replace the Launcher2.apk
I would like a .zip that will replace the Launcher2.apk in CM7 with the modified Launcher2.apk from SalvageMod. I'm hoping to get landscape functionality of the homescreen and app drawer.
Note: I use Frank707's zip to remove ADW and go back to the stock launcher.
Much thanks for taking the time to do something like this. The SalvageMod launcher should be attached.
Instead of delete all I would like a .zip that will quickly wipe the cache an delvik cache in one go in the recovery.
That would be really helpful.
All the .zips are done and in the OP. Let me know if you have any issues

Why wouldn't you just install an app while the phone was running?? I don't understand that at all. And it wouldn't be possible to make it universal, I'd have to make you a zip with the apps you want in it. But again, why not just install them with the phone running?

I think it's very difficult because they have different hardware, different providers (one from HTC, one from Amazon), we only can port Rom when we have full source code and similar driver and kernel to make sure it can work.
P/s: the kitchen you used don't support kindle so you can't make Rom used it. Need edit updater-script manually.

Maybe you should try putting one of our many kernels into it and seeing how that goes. It relys heavily on our kernel.

Oversized phone ? without the phone function ?
For starters I think you need to size down the ROM. The KF has 537MB /system and I can only assume that if the compressed ROM is ~500MB, then uncompressed it is going to be much, much higher.
You may be able to change the partition sizes to accommodate the larger size ROM. I was playing with a Sense port yesterday, based on the HTC Flyer, and ran into this problem. I may try to repartition it and see how it goes just for kicks.

I decided to see why the port I was working on is causing TWRP to just loop and to do this I checked what DMESG had to say. It appears to be an Out of memory issue. My guess would be it is being caused when it attempts to load the update file.

ok, i commend the effort here but this just simply isnt going to work without TONS of code modifications and reverse engineering. just copying files isnt going to do it. there is a reason why you dont see htc sense ported non-htc phones often. its simply not worth the amount of work that has to be put in. not to mention you'll need an experienced kernel developer who knows his ****. i would suggest not wasting your time on this.

[Q] Setting up Ubuntu work environment

Im having a hell of a time figuring out how to configure git in Ubuntu 11.10. I am very new to the Linux environment and was wondering if someone could help me get my foot in the door and at least get the my work environment set up properly and the proper source code downloaded. Im really only interested in modifying the kernel so if you can help me set up and understand whats going on Id be greatly appreciative.
Thanks...
oh dude dont even get me started on linux ive literally just spent the past 2hrs trying to get flash to work on kubuntu i got so pissed i uninstalled and am switching back to ubu as we speak lol. ubuntu should have an irc help channel i know xubuntu did when i was playing around with it.
i just looked and there channel is #ubuntu
huzza!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! freakin a i finally got flash to work properly on kde shell i completly uninsulated kubuntu installed ubuntu downloaded flash from adobe not from the software center then put it in mozilla/ plugins folder and reinstalled kde on ubuntus terminal and all my settings stook. sorry for the rambling but yall have no idea of how stoked i am im probably going to make kde my default desktop now lol

U building from source?
Sent from my SCH-I400 using xda premium
I have the source just not too sure how to utilize it in Ubuntu, like I said I'm learning as I go. I tried doing an adb pull from my phone for the config file in windows and I get the error "file or directory does not exist" however it did work when I tried it with my Acer A500...
Is there a config.gz included in the source somewhere? I've been reading about something called defconfig but there are numerous references to that within the source.
If I can find that file I feel like building our own kernel would be infinitely easier... Maybe I'm too optimistic..
i actually recocmend installing linux mint first a lot more stuff works out of the box with it but if you like unity just search for ubuntu in the software manager and u can install it over mint.
Just as an FYI, you are likely not going to be able to use Ubuntu 11.10 to build the Continuum kernel. You'll need to use either 10.04 (LTS) or 10.10 to get the proper build tools. Also, getting git to work should be as simple as installing it. I believe it is under git-core or similar. You should have a look at the page for setting up a build environment for AOSP on what to install and such, as it is a pretty good starting point.
Minty Fresh
I tried installing Mint over Unity with no success. All of the other desktop environments work, but not Mint. I wonders why.
u need to install the mint live cd first then one youve got everything update install ubuntu u can search for it in the package manage or get it in terminal
i believe the command is sudo apt-get ubuntu-desktop

Anyone know what defconfig the Continuum uses? There are about 100 different defconfigs within the kernel source. Does the Continuum have a codename or something?
P.S. everything seems to be working fine in Ubuntu 11.10.

It should be listed in the readme with the source, but it should be something like "garnett_defconfig"

Nexus 7 Ubuntu 13.04 DESKTOP

Hi, I recently installed Ubuntu desktop on my Nexus 7 using multirom.
It all went well and works well if you use a mouse with an OTG cable, I understand it was meant for developers but has anyone been able to install the tegra 3 drivers and keep unity/taskbar working?
When I install the drivers and reboot, it boots up and looks better but doesn't have unity or the taskbar. I can get into terminal with a keyboard and pretty much everything can open but its not exactly usable this way.
Thanks.

Which Tegra 3 drivers are you talking about? Ubuntu Desktop for Nexus 7 should already come with all the drivers it needs.
Its very slow and doesn't play videos, only sound. Also, in "about this computer" or something like that, none of the hardware or even the devices name is recognized. Here's a link to it https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/raring/armhf/nvidia-tegra3/16.0-0ubuntu3

Yes, those drivers are already included in Ubuntu Desktop for Nexus 7. They do have issues though (lots of screen tearing). Playing video shouldn't be a problem though if you have the right codecs installed.

I see, I installed the codecs. Might be a problem with vlc only. Thanks.
Edit: in "about computer" none of the nexus 7 hardware is displayed, I thought its strange since the version was made specifically for the nexus, is this normal?

Yes that's normal. Canonical ported Ubuntu to the Nexus 7 solely to test it and optimize it for low-spec devices. They didn't do a whole lot to polish it up and make it presentable for end users because that wasn't really their goal
Oh, let me offtop a little.
Is there any "easy" way to try out Ubuntu on grouper? I mean easy like flashing zip in recovery and then restore back to android...

Yeah man. Multirom is an app made for nexus devices that let's you multiboot ROM and distros. I've got cm11, ubunut and active plasma installed right now. Just read the how to's on this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2011403 and download the Ubuntu 13.04 from that page. If you want a few other distros for multirom get them here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2093797. It really is the easiest way to actually dual boot. And the dev is amazingly helpful. Don't hesitate to report a bug to him.
