Oh god. This is going to get locked. Just giving you fair warning.
Honestly, I really like Franco r31.
Harsh kernel is good, too.

The stock kernel.
Yeah man this is just a sitting duck for a mod to lock but I would go with franco r31 and motley exp10 for cm as a close second. Every phone reacts different to kernels but those 2 are by far the best on my phone and I think I've tried them all to this point. Lots of people like trinity also:thumbup:

Strange, but this is exactly the same thing I did lol.
The moment I got home with my Nexus, I immediately flashed MIUI.
Currently I'm on stock 2.3.7 with Wallet. (I've been wowing everyone at McDonalds and Best Buy with that lol)
I came from the dev failure that was, the Epic 4G.
Matrix or netarchy. I personally use matrix it gives me awesome battery life. But they're different for everyone so you will just have to try them out and see which one works for you.

Trinity. for speed/performance or for battery life, and everything in between. theres a version for all
Apocalypse Talon. Snappy, great battery life. Using it with Cyanogen 7.1. Your mileage may vary.

+1 certainly the best kernel for miui.

Congrats on your new nexus s. Great device.
As for kernels...well from my experience, i would say netarchy all the way for stability and performance combo. Never had any problems with his kernels. Its got all the usual features such as voltage control, voodoo controls etc. Very stable.
Trinity has been good for some but ive found it too unstable more often than not.
Havent really tried the matrix kernels so cant really say.
Have fun!

Franco kernel is good for cm7 and matr1x kernel is good for almost any rom

I use CM7 Nightly Build#229 (Best build yet) with Matr1x Kernel. But i agree that Trinity is the best Kernel for MIUI.
I highly recommend franco's kernel with custom UV settings and the lazy governor. Netarchy has been on hold recently but looks like it might be back in business soon.
try NSCollab ROM + matr1x or franco's kernel

I have 58% left after 1 day of normal usage with Matr1x kernel with ondemand enabled. I underclocked it to 800Mhz. That's enough to do my everyday stuff. When I game, I put it higher.

Well a few things you are about to get a lot opinions which is not going to help you. You should take a wander over to the dev section and check some out for yourself everyone's millage will vary. I am a CM nut with stock kernel both 7 and 9 have stable releases for the D700 not the 600 that is in your sig. If you are on a 700 and your sig is just messed up might I suggest these and not in any specific order:
The People's Rom
CM7/9/10
Clean GB
EDIT:
The SPH-D600 is the conquer

Just not a big fan of MIUI and AOKP everyone's mileage varies and what one likes others might not just find out what works for you. Just remember if you convert to MTD when you odin back to stock you will have to check repartition.

No such thing as a best kernel. Some phones like certain kernels more than others. Experiences vary.
If you're looking for kernel suggestions I'd go with Franco or Trinity by morfic (Google to find his kernel as it isn't on xda).
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
This is really subjective and is something you would need to test out on your own to get any solid answers since there's so many factors that could affect the outcome.
Thank you but it was just to see what others recommend. I've heard good things about the matrix kernel
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
Also when using those kernels download the app trickster mod it'll let you customize the kernel settings but don't touch anything you don't understand because you might mess something up. Franco and morfic have paid apps that customize their kernel but trickster is a free alternative until you commit to one kernel

Agreed. Franco really knows what he's doing, no offense to the other developers. Morfic is another good developer.
Wasn't a huge fan of matrix on the Nexus S. Just my personal opinion (don't attack me because I prefer one kernel over another!)

Nothing against math kid but (not saying he does this) but there are some shady developers or Rom cookers who say they added their secret special tweaks to boost speed or performance. I don't believe it because it's placebo. If there's no proof in the source then it doesn't exist.
Franco actually says what he did, and you can see it in the results. Plus he's very adamant about replying to feedback as long as it's not a silly question like "can I under volt using this kernel???" There's a reason why he has 20k thanks
But either way enough of my rant. Hope op finds a kernel he likes. I'd start using the most popular kernel out there and use it for a couple of days. If you aren't satisfied then try another. Satisfied but want to see if you can do better? Go ahead and try. They're all free anyways, the beauty of xda

Franco doesn't support undervolting because,
I answered that the last page. UV comes when I think its a good time for it. I do my own thing, not follow what other people do on their kernels.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=35067141&highlight=undervolt#post35067141
I really don't care much about undervolting, I think in the end its more placebo than anything. Sure it might help a little bit, but not as much as users think it does. Aggressive cpu frequency management, core management, now thats where true savings come from in my opinion.

I don't really undervolt my phone and have pretty good battery life as it is. I didn't undervolt on my Galaxy Nexus either because it had something called Smart Reflex undervolted for you when necessary. more info @ http://www.ti.com/dsp/docs/dspcontent.tsp?contentId=52746#a18
---- Franco isn't saying that there won't be UV support but as of right now he's focused on other things and will add it when it becomes more stable. And I agree with him on the second part about there are other parts of the kernel that can be worked on to have better battery life rather than just having people UV as the solution (for now).
Edit: there's a reason why his thread on GN has Views: 4,859,042 http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p163/gbd270/views_zps2644eff7.jpg
Even there's no UV on his r14, this kernel is very stable and I've a (very) good battery life
I really appreciate all your responses, so what settings do you recommend for best battery life on Franco's kernel?

On your phone they do they sucked on mine. I went from 2 to 2 1/2 hours to 4 because of a kernel.

If takes a couple of recharges for the kernel to come into effect. Have to give if a few days for your phone to get used to it.

I'm getting much better battery life than stock with Franco's kernel. I haven't tried any other kernel yet and I don't want to get into changing voltages and clock speeds etc. Franco kernel is flash and forget. I'm using the CodefireX SR1 rom.
Franco !!

The only real flash and forget kernel is IntersectRaven's. Bare bones and full of awesome. Faster than stock kernel, and better battery life. Also stable as a rock. My last up time was 100+ hours.

Go to Original Dev forum and look for kernel thread on the first page, that's your answer.
You have to try them to decide for yourself.

Hello all,
My GF is getting the Nexus 4 soon and I was hoping to improve the phone as much as possible for her once it arrives. I used to have a Galaxy Nexus running Franco Kernel and Android Revolution which ended up being a beastly combo. I'm hoping something similar exists for the Nexus 4... Awesome battery life with an improved, but still stock, ROM.
Any suggestions?
Well the Nexus 4 is pure vanilla. So i would say stay stock with Franco kernel
But I would recommend Cyanogenmod + Franco kernel
