Hello all,
My GF is getting the Nexus 4 soon and I was hoping to improve the phone as much as possible for her once it arrives. I used to have a Galaxy Nexus running Franco Kernel and Android Revolution which ended up being a beastly combo. I'm hoping something similar exists for the Nexus 4... Awesome battery life with an improved, but still stock, ROM.
Any suggestions?
Well the Nexus 4 is pure vanilla. So i would say stay stock with Franco kernel
But I would recommend Cyanogenmod + Franco kernel

RBJ has a well liked vanilla rom...

I run bamf paradigm and the pure asop rom most often in that order but everything I've run including paranoid has been really nice.

Paranoid is killer on the N7! I love it and I would definitely recommend trying it. I had no problems flashing it.

I currently use Jr7 simply because it is very similar to stock but with a few nice tweaks. This is used with Motley kernel with GPU @ 520mhz.

i am using the new paranoid that he posted today with the trinity kernel. i dont know how i feel about this kernel yet so if you guys have any other suggestions as for kernels id love to hear them. it just seems to be a little laggy but i dont know what else it could be. didnt have a problem before flashing that kernel.
id also love to hear what you guys think of the slim bean rom. im tempted, but i love the paranoid roms.
thanks for your responses!

which version trinity kernel? try alpha96 its faster than the latest which is alpha110. a110 is 1.4ghz and undervolted and a96 is 1.8ghz and fast
BIG UPS!!!!
Using stock 4.1.1 with Trinity a110. Much faster than the stock kernel.

Try CodenameAndroid its a very nice ROM and has loads of customization options yet they don't get in the way.

A96 is 1.7. Otherwise agreed. As to ROM see sig.
So I just got my nexus 7, and if course I rooted it the first day.I'm currently running Paranoid Android and love it so far. Just want to see if there are any other ones I would be trying.
Thanks in advance.

I've tried them all and I think that Kaos Droid is excellent. I use it with the Touchwiz theme (included) and it looks great. It's stable, fast, smooth and elegant.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
I'd say Paranoid Android is the rom you should use. Kaos Droid is not that good. I used it for 2 weeks and when I dumped it I understood what I lost.
Codename Android - stable, regular updates, and a decent sized download for a rom that includes a substantial number of extra features.
You will not get a fast rom. The only thing that can make a rom seem fast is sped up animation's or completely disabled wich you can do on any rom. To make anything faster you need to find a good kernel. There are lots of great oms and kernel out here. Have a try yourself and see what you like best.
I prefer paranoid android for the tablet ui. Along with faux kernel or trinity.

XenonHD
If you like Paranoid Android but want the large amount of customization that Codename Android offers, you could also try this ROM, which is a combination of Paranoid and Codename. It looks awesome and I'm planning on flashing this soon.

Thanks for all the great advice. I really like Paranoid Android, so I'll try Cookies and Cream.
I'll also try some of the kernels.
Thanks again.
Yes, there is no best rom, but everybody can have an opinion, right?

Well, and what else
Running stock at the moment, had no problems' very snappy.
I like Paranoid Android but almost all are very similar and the devs have done a great job on all the ROMs.

Used codename android and then it became slightly buggy. Running XenonHD and it's smooth and stable. Loving it right now.
Will have to see when 4.2 ROMs get uploaded but so far Xenon finally removed the blue grids around home screens while moving. Left over from tablet UI and I just hate it and CNA still has it.. Don't want to use alternative launchers either.

I feel they are all about the same. PA really is in a league of it's own if you want to utilize their features.
I jump around every few months/weeks. Basically waiting for 4.2 to drop at this point.
AOKP when I feel like tweaks
For performance, eos or rasbean ever since I've learnt to tweaks and theme things myself, I have been not needing the tweaks of ROMs like AOKP
Resbean for now, zip aligned, odexed, tweaked up and super fast

I wanna try RasBean, any bugs so far?
You should change the question as "best rom/kernel combination" since rom's pretty much depend on the kernels to perform well.. Franco R25 is the best so far for my taste and Glazed rom is the pair..

Oh god. This is going to get locked. Just giving you fair warning.
Honestly, I really like Franco r31.
Harsh kernel is good, too.

The stock kernel.
Yeah man this is just a sitting duck for a mod to lock but I would go with franco r31 and motley exp10 for cm as a close second. Every phone reacts different to kernels but those 2 are by far the best on my phone and I think I've tried them all to this point. Lots of people like trinity also:thumbup:

How can I tell which one I have??? I'm having a lot of problems with the ROM I'm running and wondering if last person flashed the wrong one... I'm running Xylon and getting horrible speeds and battery life

Mako is Nexus 4. I would say do a full wipe and fresh install of your preferred ROM or just revert to stock for a bit.

Just like others have said, Mako is the N4's codename.
Maguro = Galaxy Nexus
Toro = Verizon Galaxy Nexus.

He kind of just told you what model you have, its definitely Mako. Other details can be found settings -> about. Another place I remember confirming when I had a similar question to yours was in the google maps app also in settings -> about. Hope that helps.
Lol, only flash a ROM from the Nexus 4 forums. That should keep you safe.

AOKP is good but if you are even a mild power user you will find your phone sitting around 30% by the 3oclock range (just my personal experience)
ParanoidAndroid 2.99 beta is where i have landed and i have no plans on turning away in the near future. Battery life was much more efficient i found and tons of customization can turn your phone into something defferent everyday.

That is a kernel issue, just flash francos after installing AOKP and battery life is great, actually I don't know if AOKP switched to a different kernel or maybe they are using francos now but I didn't even bother flashing francos when I reinstalled AOKP build 2 and the battery has been great.
