[Q] Question on running apps on the NC - Nook Color Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I rooted this NC as a dual boot with honeycomb and it loaded the market app which is no longer valid.
I am looking to root this NC for my wife so she is able to use market apps as well as use her NC as a reader. I have android sdk installed, usb drivers installed, adb ready to go and a 8g class 4 sd card. What is my plan of attack on this? I am not a rooting noob, just a noob to the NC. We want it to run smooth but be able to install words with friends, angry birds and things of that nature. Any advice is greatly appreciated.
By the way the method I followed was at butterscotch webpage and while it did work it is definitely outdated. Honeycomb did work, slightly choppy but not horrible but no play store.

You have to tell us more what you want. Do you want to root stock? Or do you want to put another system on SD, leaving stock virgin? You can very easily do either, we just need to know what you want.

[Q] Root+OC+Stock Nook + HC SD Boot NOOB

Hi, I have never done a ROM install o used a Nook so I am educating myself on all the options while my new Nook arrives. While I read through XDA some questions have popped up:
1. If I want to keep my stock Nook GUI and I root it and install the Market and ADW or LP etc, will I loose my Nook's original interface or can I call it up? I might want to keep it to read magazines and for the children's books features.
2. Can I OC a stock noot (rooted)?
3. Can I have 1 and 2 and then create a bootable SD with Honeycomb? Would I be able to use the market there without confusing it with the installed apps in the stock . I mean , can I have apps installed on the internal SD and some of the same apps in the external SD for when I use HC.
Thanks!

1.- Yes, at least on OS version 1.1. This is how I have mine. Devs are still working on the OS 1.2 roots, but I see no reason why it won't work like that also when all is said and done.
2.- Not sure about this. I believe you need to install a new kernel, but I don't know if you can run the Nook's stock OS on top of an overclockable kernel. Also, I'm pretty new to the android scene, so I'm not sure what I've just said even makes sense.
3.- You can run a different OS off an SD card and keep the Nook Color itself stock. Honeycomb is not really ready for prime time, though, from what I've read.
Hi. Thanks for your reply. Then for starters I think I will root it and keep it stock . I see that there is a manual nooter for 1.2 available now but they are still working on making it 100% reliable.
For the kicks I will make an sd dual boot with Phiremod with OC kernel and Honeycomb for which there is a thread around.

A Couple of Questions Please if I May :D

First of all, really big KUDOS MUCHACHOS to the CM7 Dev guys! I had already donated a pretty hefty amount due to using CM7 so much on my Evo but I donated again cuz this is awesome! I do have a couple of questions tho, which I can't fine answers to. I did search for them but really had no luck. The NC community is not yet as organized as the EVO one, I am getting conflicting information and in general having a really ***** of a time finding anything so sorry if some of this has been answered(Im sure that's likely the case at least for some of them).
I used the size-agnostic SD card thing to make the SD Card i had into a CM7 install. Running the latest stable(as of 2 days ago). But thing of moving it all to internal memory. So here are my questions.
1: If I do this, will I be able to still access the real NC OS that shipped with the device? The Nook for Android app sucks, it won't play several of the books I already got(says they are invalid format when I try to DL them) so it is imperative to me that I keep access to the NC OS i have now(but I wouldn't care if it were on the SD card as long as it worked for reading books).
2: What will CM7 be like if I do this? I am gonna assume it won't take so long to boot anymore? Will it basically be a giant phone? Full access to the SD card? Still able to use the internal memory as storage(I use it to store music now)? Work exactly like my Evo does now? Except that it won't make calls of course.
3: Rooting. It seems that so many people are running CM7 that the guides/walkthroughs on rooting are hard to find. So a simple question or two pls Which method should I use? What, if any, are the drawbacks? I would still run CM7 most of the time but while in NC OS to read or something it would be nice to have access to android market etc as long as it wont effect my install of CM7.
4: CM7 nightlies. Can I run them from the SD card as well? If so can I just flash them right over my current SD card install without losing everything?
5: Can i run the OC Kernal while running CM7 from the SD card or do I have to run on Internal Memory for that to be possible?
Thanks for taking the time to read this pls answer any questions that you can I'd appreciate it so much!

I'll answer what I can.
1: Nope, stock ROM is replaced when you install CM7 to emmc. No way around it.
2: I'll have to defer on this one, I've always run from SD card. BTW, you are running from a class 2 card, right? The "faster" cards have serious issues.
3: My understanding is that you have to use ManualNooter for B&N 1.2. I haven't gotten around to rooting it since I upgraded to 1.2, but it was painless on the earlier ROM. There were no drawbacks, besides the fact that it's not CM7. ;-)
4: Yup, they just flash right over just as long as your following verygreen's instructions.
5: Yup, OC from SD works fine.
I don't know the specs on my SD card, it's whatever came with my EVO. I upgraded to a 32gb on the EVO so I used the old one for the Nook. My Evo is only a couple months old if that helps ya.

[Q] succeful rooted nook color but has some questions

hello i just bought a nook color yestarday, and rooted it this morning succufuly, my only problem/ concern is will the root stay active in my tablet if there is a new update? i rooted the phone using a youtube vedio, everything worked good but in the vedio the person said root honeycomb? i have read that the root honeycomb isnt good? also is this stable for future use? i used nooter 4.6.16 and CWM 3.0.2.8 thanks!
Short answer: You'll want to block future OTA updates from B&N, lest they break root. You can always upgrade after you're sure everything will work with a new version.
What version of B&N firmware are you running? Are you able to download content from B&N and apps from the Android Market?
also can reformat the sd card and put it back in the nook? the files in the sd card is nooter and the 6 files of the IMG
1.2.0 device, i can download from the android market, so far angry birds, ebay, es file manager, fourshared work, i havent tried the B&N market but livewallpapers do notwork

You can, but it can be handy for troubleshooting and fixing things. I'd suggest a 2nd card.

[Q] Newest guide for rooting Nook Simple

Hello, I just purchased a Nook Simple Touch and I'm looking to find a decent guide for rooting and installing Android onto it. I have found a few guides, but a lot of them seem out-dated and no longer relevant. I would like to be able to play Gameboy emulators on it.
Any links, tips or thoughts would be helpful. Thank you!

Actually, the Nook already runs Android. Rooting just installs a few more apps and Android components to make it more general purpose device.
I'd suggest updating to 1.2.1 (if you haven't already) then using NookManager and NTGApps Attack from http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1201. Register it with B&N before rooting, then use a Class 6 or slower SD card, make a backup, and verify it.

Don't get your hopes up re. emulators; the NST is quite a low-end device. I'd suggest only using it for ebook-reading-like activities.

Thanks, I appreciate it. Although why would I use a SD card lower than a Class6 card?

The kernel has a bug with Class 10 (and faster) cards to become inaccessible until the next reboot. That would be a bad thing to happen if you were in the middle of backing up/restoring/rooting. You might not trigger it, but if you do, recovery could be a pain.

Need advice- Samsung Galaxy Tab A- SM-T280

I got my son a tablet on Swappa- but its not really working for our needs- as he can't install very many games or large games on it- since it doesn't treat SD card as internal- and even after moving apps to SD- it doesn't move the whole app- just a small part. So we are always out of room, since its an 8gb internal, and the 64gb SD card doesn't matter.
What is going to be the fastest- easiest way for me to fix this..It is running android 5.1.1 stock- and is not rooted- I assume that to fix this I'm going to have to root, and flash a rom with at least android marshmallow- and then use ADB shell to send command to make it internal. But before I try all that- I wanted to get advice from people on here- because maybe someone knows an easy or faster way to do it.
thanks for helping my son game...
Rooting is the first step,
almost all Samsung devices are very easy to root. When I got my t280, I had it rooted, TWRP, and the special tinker edition ROM, installed with in 15 minutes of taking it out of the box. After you have it rooted, you will need a link to SD app from the play store. From there you will be able to move an app the the SD card, and in the case of the app being larger, you can link it to SD card, which will usually take most, if not all of the data, obb etc, and put it on your SD card, it can take a little bit, but I have a lot of apps on this tablet doing it this way. Hope this helps.
