Need advice- Samsung Galaxy Tab A- SM-T280 - Samsung Galaxy Tab A series Questions & Answers

I got my son a tablet on Swappa- but its not really working for our needs- as he can't install very many games or large games on it- since it doesn't treat SD card as internal- and even after moving apps to SD- it doesn't move the whole app- just a small part. So we are always out of room, since its an 8gb internal, and the 64gb SD card doesn't matter.
What is going to be the fastest- easiest way for me to fix this..It is running android 5.1.1 stock- and is not rooted- I assume that to fix this I'm going to have to root, and flash a rom with at least android marshmallow- and then use ADB shell to send command to make it internal. But before I try all that- I wanted to get advice from people on here- because maybe someone knows an easy or faster way to do it.
thanks for helping my son game...

Rooting is the first step,
almost all Samsung devices are very easy to root. When I got my t280, I had it rooted, TWRP, and the special tinker edition ROM, installed with in 15 minutes of taking it out of the box. After you have it rooted, you will need a link to SD app from the play store. From there you will be able to move an app the the SD card, and in the case of the app being larger, you can link it to SD card, which will usually take most, if not all of the data, obb etc, and put it on your SD card, it can take a little bit, but I have a lot of apps on this tablet doing it this way. Hope this helps.

Upgrading MicroSD on rooted G1?

I know this might have been posted and probably has but i simply am not getting it to pull up on the search function. I am upgrading my root G1's Micro Sd from a 2gb to a 8gb or possibly 16gb as I tend to want to keep a lot of music on it. If I upgrade the SD do i simply partition it to Fat32 and then copy my files over or does something else need to be done? I simply do not want to screw all my stuff up b/c i am not thinking about some aspect.
Thanks in advance for any and all help as i am just trying to be safe. Do not want to screw up my root/phone or anything with something like this.
Have you done the apps to sdcard? If not then yeah you can just copy the contents of the old card over to the new one and use it.
No i have not done Apps2SD yet as it was unneeded as of so far. I have also wondered about the safety of such. If the phone were on and the SD card were to come out i would imagine some damage could be done. Once i get the bigger SD then i might do it.

[Q] problems with sd partitions

ok first let me start with I have the tab 2 7.0 3113 with stock jellybean. I am new to the tablet world but not android my phone works much better than this tablet. I have been trying to deal with the inabiltiy to move apps to sd card by the way the worst engineering screw up known to man a simple task that can be done on any android phone but not my $250 tablet. Sorry getting off track been surfing every forum for an actual fix for 3 days. first i tried the simple fix via app2sd or link2sd withno prevail neither worked ad no other program i could find did either not titanium back up pro nor rom toolbox. I have tried partitioning the sd card with clockwork mod and minitool both say its partitioned but still cant move anything. And i keep getting a low internal storage space which keeps me from doing update i used funny patcher to fix that issue but still cant figure out how to actually really trully not just link2sd but actually download apps to my ext sd card and move some of my bigger games there for storage i have a 32gb sd card that barelly has anything on it nothing works i hav done 4 factory wipes and even tried night time build rom which wouldnt function on my tablet. My tab 2 is rooted by the way please if anyone can think of anything else to try let me know my hands are up in the air.
Thankyou in advance.

First, Welcome to XDA. Not let's see if I can explain...
The device has two "sdcards". One internal and one external. By default, apps go to the internal sdcard. You'll need root and one of the many scripts around to trick the device into thinking that the external sdcard is the internal one. I have the same tablet BTW. Love mine.
how do i do that i have already partitioned it with mini tool and mounted it with clockworkmod what am i missing

Search... We stress using the search function here at XDA. The main reason is you'll never learn if someone gives you all the answers all the time.
Although you say you've mounted the sdcard in CWM, it's only mounted in CWM. Once you reboot, it's no longer mounted by CWM as CWM is no longer in control. Linux and Android are in control now.
Being the nice guy I am, I'll point you in the right direction this time. But from now on, please search, and search again if no luck the first time. Check out this thread.
Good luck

[Q] rooted MOJO: how to move apps to SD card

Hi all,
I successfully rooted my MOJO, but I still don't know how to move games to the SD card. I tried a few apps to achieve this, but none of them seems to work. What am I doing wrong? I hope you can help me.
Thanks in advance!
Are the apps giving you any message? App2SD will say something like "The device does not have real primary external storage, or the Primary external storage is emulated. Moving app to SD function may not be supported by this device"
You might try this: http://karthikkn.wordpress.com/2013...ard-on-your-android-phone-without-rooting-it/

Are you sure your SD card is being read by the MOJO?
Format SD Card to FAT format.
Insert Card.
Go to settings, storage, mount sd card.

Yes, my SD card is mounted, I can access it by using a file explorer. However I am not able to move games.
@ExtremeRyno Yes, this is exactly what App2SD is saying. Thanks for the link, did you try it out? I don't think this is going to work on the mojo, since it is not possible to connect a USB cable and using ADB. Or am I wrong?
Is nobody here who successfully moved games to SD card? We have root now, so it should be easy, or not?
You can ADB in via network. Get the IP of the mojo from settings->status, then it's just "adb connect ipaddr" so you can try out the link instructions.
Root doesn't always equate to a completely open system. Some devices just don't work with moving apps to an SD card. My A700 doesn't allow it, and I'm rooted, but my NookColor does allow it. I've yet to get my cable delivered, so I can't attest to anything as of yet.
Maybe someone with MadCatz can give an explanation? I know it's an extremely important feature for a gaming console to have enough storage to handle more than ten or so big games at a time.

Found a new app today that seems to get around the problems the other apps have: FolderMount. It's free. I plan to try it out as soon as I root...Probably in the next couple days. If you get a chance before me, let us know how it works.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.devasque.fmount
Also, I'm aware of the double post, but they're days apart and this needed a bump (for great justice, right?)

Tanks for the tip! I just tried out this app, but unfortunatly it doesn't work. Maybe it works for smaller games, because I was able to move the data to the SD card with it. But if you move big games with OBB data and then start the game, it doesn't find anymore its OBB data and downloads it again.
Also, you can't move back the data from the SD card. I just tried it out with NOVA 3 and I have to redownload the whole game now
It works now, yeehaaa :good:
For some reason, the MOJO needs to be rebooted after moving the OBB data to SD card
Summary:
1. Root the MOJO
2. Format your SD card as a primary partition using fat32
3. Install this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.devasque.fmount
4. Move OBB data of your games
5. reboot
Remark: If you want to move more than 2 apps/games, you will have to buy the pro version of this app.
Awesome! I tried it out on my tablet last night and moved around a couple games....But never more than two at a time. I had no idea that was actually a limitation, either..Just worked out that way. I'll have to buy the full version as soon as I root.
Excellent news.
Not working

I tried that folder mount and did move the folders, but the internal storage indicates the same as before and the obb data remains in the internal storage as apposed to moving completely to the external.Meaning i don't know why but it doesn't work?I too have rooted my m.o.j.o so it's not because of that either.

Okay try again but on a fresh start (on/off).
Maybe you had a process running in the back?
And remember to reboot it after moving.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2748087 this works though just been clarified for games being moved.
Unless I am mistaken apps2sd and gl to sd, don't move the data file making them useless in the real world. and I've not looked into it for about 6 months or so, so something might have changed but filemount doesn't work correctly on android 4.2.2 and onwards.
And unfortunately its the same for directory bind (undoubtedly the best mount/binder ever on android) simply amazing application but again it don't like 4.2.2
Not tried directory bind on the mojo cause unless some things changed with it the last few months its not going to work. Also I don't fancy doing anything to the mojo until a Recovery's available and that ain't happening unfortuinately

Apps on SD Card

I loved Stock Android around when KitKat was out, but I came to hate it when Lollipop came out. I decided to get the Moto X and try out Marshmallow, but I'm already running into problems with/hating Google's (and Motorola's) oversimplified features.
Usually when I get a phone a put in an SD card so I can store some apps and data on there, as well as music, pictures, files, etc. that has been on the card for years. I pop in the SD card to the 16 gig phone ready to move Spotify and some other apps to the card, but then I run into that whole "format as internal storage. It says that formatting it will wipe the card (obviously), but it also says once I do I will only be able to use the SD card with this device, and when I asked a friend for help, she said I wouldn't be able to transfer data from the card anymore either.
I started searching everywhere on the internet for a workaround, but I can't find anything. Is there any workaround with this? I'm already rooted and on a ROM so I'm open to any suggestions. If not I'm just going to sell the phone or downgrade to lollipop.
Which version of twrp are you using ?
You need to make sure you have this version of twrp.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3200520
Prior to this version, twrp was broke in regards to the new adaptable storage that came in Android M, then finally a few weeks ago, 3.0.0 came out, fixed that, and also a few other things. I can not use the combined/adaptable storage feature in Marshmallow like it was intended. To be honest, it was the major reason I got this phone and bought the 16gb version. Its all good now tho.

And yeah I just seen 3.0.1 is out I'm thinking just flashing the .IMG will work, I used flashify

The problem is Marshmallow wants me to format my SD card as internal storage just to store apps on it, and I am trying to find a way to store apps on there without formating it, as I've been doing with all previous Android versions.
I don't get why you wouldn't want to use the adaptable storage option. What's wrong with backing ur sd up to pc, format as internal(adaptable storage? , and then copy back from pc. If I'm missing something, my bad.
Otherwise,
Pretty sure there isn't way to do what you want on 6.0... But again, I don't know what you are actually losing out on other than having to back the card 1st, format, and copy back. A small hassle

I don't want to use the adaptable storage because I will only be able to use the SD card with this phone and I won't be able to transfer data from it either.
This is a problem because I currently use the SD card between two phones, as a makeshift flash drive, and as storage for my DSLR so I can edit photos with my phone.
I went through this whole ordeal myself recently.
You can't have it both ways. I chose to format my card as portable storage so it will remain readable in any card reader. The draw back is apps can't be stored on it, nor most app data.
To work around this i'm making every app a system app. This will alleviate some of the burden of the internal storage. Some apps will just not work as system apps. I think swype is one example.
Some apps will require their .lib to be placed in the appropriate lib folder under system (lib or lib64 for 64bit binaries). Google maps and hangouts are two examples that come to mind. You'll know if you need this if the app crashes when starting.
The ideal solution is to have a phone with at least 32GB storage or more. This becomes a non issue then.
Yeah, Motorola removed the Move to SD card feature in favor of "the richer experience natively provided by Android."
I think you can use TWRP "Partition SD Card" to create 2 partitions on the SD, though... a FAT32 partition to share with your other devices and an EXT4 partition that you can use to store apps. You'll need an android app like Mounts2SD to copy apps to/from the external storage.
The other option is to downgrade to 5.1.1 or use a 6.0 ROM that still has the old Move to SD card feature. I'm not sure if there are any, though.

To the op Sorry man, I didn't really know all this. But this post seems to explain it pretty well. Looks like you may have to sell or downgrade. That sucks.
As far as this specific post is concerned, I'm trying to follow my best. As you said, best would be to buy at least at 32gb well some, including me have already bought a 16gb, unfortunately. Personally, iv chose to use adaptable now that twrp 3.0 is out. When i Install apps, wherever they go is where they go. After seeing this thread, I'm thinking maybe there is way to do things a different way to save some space. I went ahead and went into apps and tried moving Spotify from internal to SD card. but after I did this, I noticed every time I close the app it signs me out lol wth... that's a problem. I didn't know why it was doing that. Is this an example of an app not being able to run correctly on the SD rather than internal? Also, i tried moving maps from internal to sd, seemed to be running fine, but shortly after, i noticed on a reboot, it somehow uninstsalls. Its gone as if i uninstalled it manually but i obv did not. Like what? How is this even possible. I wanted to give you a few examples of what i tried and what was happening. But I asked myself why am I even doing this, is it to save space? If it is, that's fine.
But yeah man, it seems you know more than me about this , that's safe to say. But based on what iv written here, can you give me some advice on things to do if I'm using the adaptable storage option. Should I be moving apps? Why? Which ones? Or just leave things as is? Again i have a 16gb model with a 32gb card running adaptable storage. If there are ways to save space by moving apps certain places I'm fine with that. I'd just like to get your opinion on what exactly I should be doing based on the model I have, size card, and running adaptable storage. Hey sorry too bother you about this. I had noticed you replied to the op of this topic and you know what you are talking about.
And to the op, sorry if iv hijacked your post man.
Peace

Yeah I should have gotten the 32gb version, although it's kind of my fault because I already had a negative opinion of post-kitkat stock Android yet I got the device anyways. Maybe I can resell the device on swappa and get a 32gb version instead of buying a new one, mainly because the only two phones of the 2015 generation I have interest in is the Moto X Pure and the One M9. Worst case scenario is settling for Samsung (as oneplus said, never settle)
To make matters worst, I temporarily moved all the data to my computer and formated the SD card as internal as a test, only to find out the two apps I put on there don't want to act properly because the SD card is too slow (which is why the feature shouldn't even be here in the first place).

If I do do one of those options it would most likely be the second one because last time I messed with partitions on an SD card I, somehow, bricked the phone. I could look for a tutorial somewhere, but this phone's XDA forums is relatively quiet compared to other phones I've had (especially Android development).
@Sheetzie03, I can't help you with adoptable space as it's not something I have much experience with. It could be spotify relies on other components which are not accessible when on the sd.

Space is all I want!

Hi all, so to start with, as the title says im constantly running out of space on the FN model 2015, so ive dived into the forum looking for help. First thing i tried was the sd card hack to combine my 64gb sdcard with the 8gb internal. Harra! it worked, but then i still run outa space as it dosen't seam to to use the sdcard space as i had hoped. It's like it just copys some of the data from the apps to the SD card like normal but without having to go into the each app and selecting external sdcard. Kinda thought no probs I'll download a custom rom with no samsung apps and with a min gapp giving me as much storage space i could get. I can't see one, starting to think there isnt one. So my question is, is it hard for me to take my backup of my stock rom and strip what I can out bearing in mind I'm a bit of a noob and have to follow instructions from the clever ROM makers? not to bothered about increasing the speed and looks just the space. Would be able nice to update them without having to delete a few and re-install the ones I deleted. Any advice on what coarse to take would be great. Maybe theres a ROM I've mist I could use and give thanks for?
Cheers

Hi,
Instead of using Adoptable Storage, make 2 partitions on your SD, 1 FAT32 for photos, music, documents and another EXT4 for apps data. Use this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=in.co.pricealert.apps2sd , i tested it.
You can make 2 partitions using PC or with TWRP Recovery.

Thanks for your reply! I went down the apps2SD route in the end. Kinda mest it up a bit but have free'd up nearly 1gb of space so thanks, that's more than enough! %) I ended up partitioning the SDcard and linking all the apps I'm not interested in, excel,Skype,Samsung etc. Anyway what i didn't realise was that i had mest the other part of the partition up. Ended up re-formatting the SDcard in recovery back to normal and those apps I didn't want 90% of the data of those have now been wiped %)
