[Q] Nexus 4 Power Button Sinking into Housing? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello guys,
After awhile of using the phone, I feel the power button sinking more and more into the housing. There is a lot less distance to click from now. From time to time (not often) pressing the power button does not wake the phone but that's rare. Anybody having the same issues? Should I RMA?

The N4's hardware buttons are pretty "thin", if that makes sense. If you're worried, you could try something like Screen Off & Lock (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.katecca.screenofflock&hl=en) to reduce the number of times you press the power button. I currently have a gesture set up in Apex Launcher to launch Screen Off & Lock, and it works nicely. I imagine you could do similar things with Tasker or GMD GestureControl.

I installed CM 10.1. It has option to wake the screen with the Volume Rocker.

Yeah I've noticed it on mine too.
It was very harder and more out when I got it. It'll probably stop sinking when it reaches a certain point.

Not used it for a while but I'm pretty sure widget locker lets wake the phone with the volume keys.
As someone else said it will stop dining after a certain point. I noticed the same thing on the gnex too

Home button

Does anyone else dislike the home button? I really find this a step backwards.

Nope! I like the physical home button.

Same here. I was a little worried about it before my phone was delivered because of what one of the reviews I read had to say about it, but I am pleased with it.

If you had a i9100 or a i9000 you are used to it. Its nice double clicking it brings out s voice. Then double clicking menus opens search.

I like it... Coming from the Epic, its taking a bit to get use to it. The simple touch to get home was nice too. I want my Camera button back. lol and Keyboard.

I also like the Home button. I like holding it down to get the task manager with whatever is running. I can easily remove any apps by swiping them off to the side. (for those few who didn't know)
But, you don't need a physical button to get the camera going. It takes a bit of practice but here's the trick - starting from the locked screen (visible) - with your thumb in the middle of the screen hold the phone in the portrait position then rotate to horizontal. The camera should pop up instantly.
it does work.
Coming from the S2 it takes some getting used to but its growing on me.

Has anyone noticed a definite lag when you press the home button before it returns to home screen? I disabled double click to open S-voice and it seems to have become slightly faster, but you can still notice a lag before the home screen shows up.
Coming from the Galaxy Nexus it was s ***** at first but I have grown used to it though but......soft keys>>>>> hard keys

Well, I guess I need to keep giving it a chance. I'm just used to having to barely press it. With the case on it seems harder to get to.

Disable S-Voice's double-tap-home shortcut in the S-Voice settings. It's instant after that. You won't be able to launch S-Voice by double tapping home though.
Personally I would prefer more screen real estate and have the digital soft keys like on the Galaxy Nexus. by doing this they could have either provided more screen or made the overall size of the phone slightly shorter.
It's my only complaint. After having a Transformer Prime and getting used to a capacitive home button, it really is a hassle.
Coming from the Samsung vibrant, I didn't like the idea of it at first because I was use to the soft keys and the s3's physical home button reminded me of the vibrant's international version (I9000).
But now that I actually have the phone, I love it. Just takes some time to get use to, depending on your preference or your previous phone.

Coming from the Evo 3D, it's definitely annoying but I'm getting used to it. Honestly, I wish they removed capacitive buttons, made the screen bigger and went for software buttons like the Galaxy nexus. That way it's much more customizable and gives you extra screen space when you dont use the bottom buttons.
Annoyed
It is a shame. My finger is tired!
Captivate had 4 capacitive buttons.
Considering how good and responsive capacitive buttons got on SGS3 - it is hard to justify physical home button, and it can break too. Suxxxx.
I dont mind it at all
I like the home button. I just hope it holds up for 2years.

Love the Home button. Coming from an iPhone 4S I am used to the physical button. The biggest plus for me is waking the phone up. I find it very awkward to press the side power button to do that instead of quickly locate the physical button right on the face of the device. Also the double tap and single tap and hold works good.

Creaky volume button

Just got my nexus 4 today. Love it except for the very creaky volume buttons. The slightest touch makes it creak a lot, whether I'm pressing up, down, or even just resting my finger on it. Makes the phone feel cheap over all. Anybody else? Should I try to exchange it?
Edit...just realized its the power button too. Bummer.

physical volume button backward?

Is it just me or is the volume button configured backward on the nexus 10? If you hold the nexus 10 vertically, the top button turns down the volume and the bottom button turns up the volume? If you hold the nexus horizontal like it should be hold, it kinda make sense the right button increases the volume and the left button decreases the volume. I just found it odd because the iPad is the opposite.
Is this normal on the nexus 10?
Yes its normal. Nexus 10 is made to be used mainly in landscape therefore the buttons are set up for landscape.

be sure to thank me if I helped
It is normal. Hopefully a mod will appear that'll reverse it to what it should be.

I guess if you are using an app that auto rotates clockwise then it would feel backwards but I usually rotate mine anti clockwise when I'm browsing in portrait anyway so I never actually noticed this.
To be fair though i often find that if I am picking up and putting down my nexus 10 I might go over an hour without realising its upside down so observation is not a strength.

It does depend on which way up you hold the nexus in portrait mode.
If the power button is at bottem left then the volume buttons are correct.
Maybe what should be happening is that the volume controls change over as you rotate the nexus. Therefore when the power button is top right the volume button nearest the power button would be volume up.

Would be awesome if the rocker switched when you went from landscape to portrait. So it is intuitive either way.

Nvm.
Yeah but I was looking for it to stay the same in landscape mode but change in portrait. From what I was reading that would change both.

this would make my dream come true. Until TweetDeck locked itself in a single position in portrait mode and wouldn't auto rotate 180 degrees, I just assumed I was holding the device upsidedown!
I wonder if there's a way to remap the buttons based on orientation in Tasker. I need to look into this.
Look at Liquidsmooth RC2, it has in its changelog that the volume buttons swap when screen rotates:

Please let me know if you find a way. I'm very interested in this topic.

4.2.2 question re: volume rocker on lock screen

Quick question. Just got the 4.2.2 update and I noticed that I cannot adjust volume on the lock screen. Was that option removed?
It was. I liked it, wish they would have kept it.

Hit and miss for me. Like it when listening to music. Annoyed me when not as I would accidently hit it sometimes instead of power if holding upside down

The vol buttons still work when listening to music, just the graphic does not show up now.
I liked the original way of doing things for putting your phone to silent/vibrate really fast.
mine updated last night, and i too miss this function!
Found it really useful

Lock button possible issue.

Love my phone so far, but I've noticed the lock button is almost flush with the side of the bezel. Almost to the point where it's hard to push or even find in the dark. It feels responsive, just really close to the bezel. Is this normal?
My volume rocker sits out quite far (almost twice as far as my lock button) and seems prefect...

Im not sure what to tell you. My lock and volume keys are exactly the same. They are not too deep, about a fingernails height up. Nice and clicky. Try going to the store and see if they will exchange it for you?
