physical volume button backward? - Nexus 10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is it just me or is the volume button configured backward on the nexus 10? If you hold the nexus 10 vertically, the top button turns down the volume and the bottom button turns up the volume? If you hold the nexus horizontal like it should be hold, it kinda make sense the right button increases the volume and the left button decreases the volume. I just found it odd because the iPad is the opposite.
Is this normal on the nexus 10?

Yes its normal. Nexus 10 is made to be used mainly in landscape therefore the buttons are set up for landscape.

be sure to thank me if I helped

It is normal. Hopefully a mod will appear that'll reverse it to what it should be.

I guess if you are using an app that auto rotates clockwise then it would feel backwards but I usually rotate mine anti clockwise when I'm browsing in portrait anyway so I never actually noticed this.
To be fair though i often find that if I am picking up and putting down my nexus 10 I might go over an hour without realising its upside down so observation is not a strength.

It does depend on which way up you hold the nexus in portrait mode.
If the power button is at bottem left then the volume buttons are correct.
Maybe what should be happening is that the volume controls change over as you rotate the nexus. Therefore when the power button is top right the volume button nearest the power button would be volume up.

Would be awesome if the rocker switched when you went from landscape to portrait. So it is intuitive either way.

Nvm.

Yeah but I was looking for it to stay the same in landscape mode but change in portrait. From what I was reading that would change both.

this would make my dream come true. Until TweetDeck locked itself in a single position in portrait mode and wouldn't auto rotate 180 degrees, I just assumed I was holding the device upsidedown!

I wonder if there's a way to remap the buttons based on orientation in Tasker. I need to look into this.

Look at Liquidsmooth RC2, it has in its changelog that the volume buttons swap when screen rotates:

Please let me know if you find a way. I'm very interested in this topic.

CyanogenMod has the feature. Problem solved!

Is your power button hard to press?

It seems my power button is hard to press. There's not much of a click so I sometimes I don't know if I pressed it. I wonder I need a replacement.

I have the same...issue? It's not so much an issue as it is something I wish were a little different.

Can't tell you, Google still has my phone
By hard to press you mean hard to find?
Takes sometime to get used to the button position, you know.
Moved to Q&A
PGM Nexus will hopefully be updated to support the n4 soon; awesome application!
No click, hard to press and mushy and way to high on the side.
Volume is the same way.
Bad design, just like placing the speaker on the back of a completely flat surface, who the heck approves these...
Maybe a few of you have sort of a defective button? ( as in not working as intended )

Easy to press but I always seem to be pressing the volume rocker at the same time. I like the top power button location on my Sensation 4G better.

I have the same problem. Its not by any means AWFUL but there are many times I attempt to press it and it doesn't press.
My power button also doesn't feel as solid as the volume rocker.
I'm afraid it will become unresponsive later.
Ok so it seems I'm not the only one with a mushy power button. I don't have a definite click that's for sure.

Power button is good, volume down sticks though. Contemplating exchanging it

[Q] Does the N4 come with a default screen capture?

Hey all multiple times I have wanted to take screen shots and I was wondering does the nexus 4 come with a default screen capture or do I need to download one of the apps to do this. I know some androids are starting to come with this feature default finally such as the S3.
Also can anyone give me a reason as to why screen captures have not been implemented by Google. Legal issues with apple? No reason?
Thanks all
Press power and volume down together.

I have tried this many times and so far it has never worked. Maybe I am just challenged
Yep power and volume down and hold it for a few seconds together then it will take a screen shot

That button combo (pwr + vol-down) doesn't work for me while the desktop is showing, but it works with an app in the foreground. Even works in the INFO screen.
Thanks guy helped me plenty! Just didn't hold down the buttons down long enough
I can take a screenshot anywhere, just have to hold both buttons for a couple seconds. Even works on the lock screen!
Ya u gotta hold it til it takes the shot

CM10.1- how do I take screen shot pictures?

This is for the latest CM10.1 nightly. Power and volume down doesn't work. It worked this way with stock. :'( loving my new nexus 7!!

You can always go to power menu and screenshot from there though it's really "clunky" (my vocabulary sucks)
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Settings-system-power menu. From there you can enable screenshots from long pressing the power button and tapping screenshot.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
the proper way to do it is to hold down the power and the up volume, or down, idk, and it will take a screenshot, it has to be pretty good timing though or youll turn your volume up or turn off the screen.

All you need to do for 10.1 is hold power and volume down at the same time

[Q] Nexus 4 Power Button Sinking into Housing?

Hello guys,
After awhile of using the phone, I feel the power button sinking more and more into the housing. There is a lot less distance to click from now. From time to time (not often) pressing the power button does not wake the phone but that's rare. Anybody having the same issues? Should I RMA?
The N4's hardware buttons are pretty "thin", if that makes sense. If you're worried, you could try something like Screen Off & Lock (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.katecca.screenofflock&hl=en) to reduce the number of times you press the power button. I currently have a gesture set up in Apex Launcher to launch Screen Off & Lock, and it works nicely. I imagine you could do similar things with Tasker or GMD GestureControl.
I installed CM 10.1. It has option to wake the screen with the Volume Rocker.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
Yeah I've noticed it on mine too.
It was very harder and more out when I got it. It'll probably stop sinking when it reaches a certain point.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
Not used it for a while but I'm pretty sure widget locker lets wake the phone with the volume keys.
As someone else said it will stop dining after a certain point. I noticed the same thing on the gnex too

4.2.2 question re: volume rocker on lock screen

Quick question. Just got the 4.2.2 update and I noticed that I cannot adjust volume on the lock screen. Was that option removed?
It was. I liked it, wish they would have kept it.

Hit and miss for me. Like it when listening to music. Annoyed me when not as I would accidently hit it sometimes instead of power if holding upside down

The vol buttons still work when listening to music, just the graphic does not show up now.
I liked the original way of doing things for putting your phone to silent/vibrate really fast.
mine updated last night, and i too miss this function!
Found it really useful
