So I have a stock nexus 4 I am trying to back up all of my data to my PC from, and for some reason it keeps trying to only transfer some of the files to my PC when I drag everything from the phone storage to my pc. I have the phone hooked up via usb cable from the phone using MTP connection.
Anyone have any ideas why this might be happening, or maybe how to fix it?
Did you do a media scan?
MTP sucks. Try using Airdroid or something similar. once you get used to it it's a lot faster.

Hey,
So I ordered the Nexus 4 about a week ago but I just read that there is no USB support. However do you transfer files from your phone to your computer and how do you get new roms onto your phone? I typically download on my computer because its so much faster in terms of internet connection and then I plug my usb in and just drag the roms or files or whatever onto my phone.

Where on earth did you read that???
There is just no USB-OTG (on the go) support, AKA support for USB keyboards/mice/thumbdrives

There is USB support, just not as the host.
Thanks! Some people obviously have their information wrong. Yeah I had read about no on the go support but I read that there was no USB port either, someone was blogging and about and ranting about how annoying it was going to be to have to access files wirelessly on his computer instead of being able to plug it in. It's good to know he had his info wrong! lol

even without using usb you can always transfer the files over the LAN from your PC using ES file explorer or some such. :good:
honestly transferring files over WiFi isnt anymore inconvenient then always having to carry around your micro usb cable, run airdroid on the phone navigate on your pc browser, drag and drop files...

it is less inconvenient than the other 2 options imo.
Or is that what you meant?
i think what you are concerned about is the usb mode in which the phone acts when plugged in via usb. it defaults to mtp mode rather than the old USB Mass Storage.
I had the same question as the OP. Did a little research, and with Windows you just plug your device in; on MacOS you need to install an app on your computer. It's not quite as convenient as having it appear as a connected device in MacOS Finder -- can't preview the images in place, for example -- but it's OK.
(I can't post outside links yet as a new user; google "stackexchange nexus 4 usb storage connect", it's the first result)
Hi
Can I play movies on PC from nexus 4 while it's connected with USB cable like it was a regular flash drive?
When I try doing it the file is being downloaded first then plays. If the file is big it takes a lot of time.
I'm using windows 8.
Better copy the film to your pc first. I got the same problem but dont think this is os related. Just a bad read speed, worse than actually usb 2.0.
The speed is onpair with usb 2.0, still copying the whole movie to some unknown place instead of direct play is unnecessary and waste of time.
My previous phone had an sdcard which appeared as hard drive when connected to PC, but N4 appears as portable device. This sucks
That's because the Nexus 4 doesn't support USB On The Go. Search xda for "Nexus 4 OTG" and you'll come across some threads about this, and a couple of workarounds that might, or might not work for you :fingers-crossed:.
Hey there
I wasn't looking for USB OTG, which is a way to connect external drives to the device. I'm looking for a way to use N4 itself as a regular external drive while connected to PC. Currently it's seen by PC as a portable device and it's pretty limited.

I would assume increasing the SD read-ahead (if you're on a custom kernel) might help with your issue here. But as someone else previously mentioned, copying to PC is definitely the better option. That, or just enjoy the movie on your Nexus4
hey guys.
i just tried copying an avi file from my pc to the phone. i had already selected Media device (USB 3.0) in the pull down menu.
first it disconnected as it had initially first connected via Media device (MTP) and then reconnected and brought the auto play dialogue up. after a few seconds it disconnected itslef again and then reconnected. it seems to randomly want to disconnect and reconnect when it wants to.
even while it was apparently still reconnected, i tried to copy a file over to it and it first said i might not be able to play the file did i want to copy it anyway, i clicked yes, then it says the device has either stopped responding or has been disconnected even though it still appears to be connected.
if i switch back to MTP it still warns about maybe not playing the file but then after clicking to still copy across, it copies fine.
i am running windows 7. i have used this usb 3.0 port fine with a usb thumb stick i have. also, windows says it has installed the device successfully when i click over to usb 3.0.
so.... any ideas why it randomly wants to dis/re connect? and why will it not copy across even when it appears connected?
thanks guys.

Make sure you have the latest Samsung USB drivers on your PC. If you think you do, I would go to the device manager and uninstall your phone from the device list and then let it reinstall the drivers. Downloading Kies 3 also installs the drivers on your PC.

thanks mate but i have already tried them.
it does charge fine so i'm not sure whether it is a power issue but the issue of it disconnecting must have something to do with not transferring anything over even though it still appears connected when i am trying.
i read somewhere that due to it's quicker data transfer, the pc and device need to send much quicker signals to each other to let them know that they're still attached. by using an extension lead inbetween the device and usb 3.0 socket i was delaying that signal sufficiently to make the pc keep thinking the phone wasn't attached anymore. i removed the extension lead and sure enough it copied across fine.
the odd thing is that both a usb thumb drive and my 2tb backup external HDD work fine over the extension. maybe the note 3 is slower at sending that signal to start with? dont know but it now works.
Hey y'all!
So far I'm loving this device but I have recently learned something that is quite irksome. I have done some quick Google-fu and haven't found a solution to this problem so hopefully you guys can help me out!
When I connect my 6P to my desktop, it installs the drivers, but it won't show up on my computer. I can't access any of the data. It charges but no actual transfer. I have changed the setting to MTP, tried installing new drivers, Android Debugging toggled (adb push works oddly enough), installing Google drivers, but nothing seems to work!
Also to note: My brother's Nexus 6 won't connect, and neither will my other brother's OnePlus One. It makes me think it has something to do with standard Android devices? I'm not sure.
I'm on Windows 8.1 FYI. Lemme know if you guys need anymore information!
Thanks in advance!
Try another PC, may be your PC has some issues.

Sounds computer related. I would uninstall all your Google, android, and whatever looks obvious drivers them restart your computer. Then reinstall Twrp drivers. Best of luck

It may be PC related but on marshmallow (6p at least) it asks you if you want to use it as file transfer device ,transferring pictures ,charging and all that jazz. Maybe you didn't see that screen on the phone?

Pull down the notification bar, and click on the notification which says something like, "38%, charging" or somesuch.. that will allow you to the change the USB mode to allow file transfers.
The default option is to charge, make sure you change it to MTP. This is a thorn in my side as I want the default option to be file transfer!
Can not connect nexus 6p to computer
I have turned on de bugging and set by usb connectuon to MTP from the default charge selection but I still can not get my computer to see the phone storage. When I plug into my computer it will install the drives even make the tone that its connected but I can not see the device under my explore? HELPPPPPP
I had to change it to PTP then back to MTP and disconnect and reconnect it to get MTP to work at all, just FYI.
I had to use my laptop just to be able to access files on the phone. For some reason my main desktop does not want to recognize the 6p, even after troubleshooting drivers etc.
You might want to check out this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6p/help/usb-storage-windows-t3244905/page2#post63750876, discussion has already been progressing.
Great Advice. Pulling down the notification bar. Mega cool

This post helped me figure out what I needed to do. Many thanks:highfive:
I had this problem and just needed to quickly transfer a couple of movie files to my laptop. Without getting too deep into what is obviously some sort of Marshmallow compatibility thing, here's what worked for me...
Switched to PTP and another set of drivers installed after which "Internal Storage" was recognized and I was able to access all contents of both "DCIM" and "Pictures" folders.
Then, using Explorer I simply moved the files I wanted to transfer to the "Pictures" folder and proceeded with my original intent. Problem Solved

Hi Guys
I have two identical phones S5's one is a spare so does not have a sim card. The one I use I can plug it into a usb on my computer the computer beeps and it shows up in windows explorer. The second I plug into my computer it peeps the same sound but does not show up in explorer. If I have Device manager open and expand the USB folder it refreshes but no new devices not like the first phone where is refreshes and I see a new entry. Both phones have usb debugging on.
Any ideas
P.S. If I pull down the menu from the top and click on the options for USB then pick Transferring Images (transfer images and other files via a PTPconnectionif MTP is not avaliable) then I can see the phone in Explorer but Odin does not see the phone. If I pick Transferring media files (Transfer media files to a computer via an MTP connection) then the phone dissapears from Explorer.
Whats going on The phone that works of in USB options i pick Transfering media files and all is well whats going on with this second phone
Thanks
Rick
The phone Im having trouble with has updated to 6.0.1 Where the phone that is working is still at 5.1.1
