Nothing is impressive at CES 2013 now that I have the note2 - Galaxy Note II General

Honestly nothing from what I've seen at ces 2013 regarding mobile makes me want it over my note2.
Anybody else feel the same?
Sent from my SGH-I317M using xda app-developers app

I feel like "impressive" works on a 2 year cycle. Android and iPhones.
iPhone 4, big leap -> 4s, marginal upgrade -> 5, big leap (performance wise)
- 2010 saw a slew of ~1ghz, 512mb powerhouses that blew away the old 528mhz phones of 2009.
- 2011 saw a marginally faster dual core, mostly 512mb phones limited by RAM.
- 2012 saw incredible dual and quad core, 2gb phones that completely blew away 2011 phones.
- 2013 will see slightly different Tegra 4's, Exynos, and Snapdragons that boast impressive numbers but will be paired with 1 and 2gb RAM phones and see little to no real world performance differences.
- 2014 will see phones that are an enormous upgrade from 2013.
Just my thoughts. I bought my Note II to carry me into mid-late 2014, because I believe this to be true.

nothing interesting for now, very happy with 720P display because i think that 1080P display will consume a lot of battery and we will not notice any difference
The good things that i saw : The Tegra and Snapdragon cpu and the 13 MP camera on some devices but i will not change my Note 2 for this.
A dual core processor is enough now and we have quad core with a great battery life

Wholeheartedly agree with both of you. But I don't really understand why some manufacturers focus on a high number of camera megapixels, I'd rather have better optics and camera hardware than the ability to make large posters.

Same here. I wish manufacturers could spend more time on system optimization, UI design or software development rather than racing specs.

because ordinary buyer doesnt care about optics, they need higher numbers of everything and then they show their e-penis.... ;D
full hd display for smartphone? nah for me note 2 hd RGB display is more than enough, not so power hungry and display is gorgeous.

Note II is my first smartphone, and so far I think it'll last me for at least until 2014. And I won't submit into peer pressure when S4 arrives, but I hope I won't be too jealous when Note III comes out. After all, it's just 7 more months until the next IFA

After having phones since 1994, I can say the Note 2 is finally my perfect device.
The screen is brilliant, and the audio is sublime with the hack brovided by EdgaBimbam.
Can't think of anything close to the Note 2 right now!
The Xperia Yuga (Z) is getting focus, but Sony phones have major battery issues due to lack of optimization and a very power hungry out of date LCD.
Keith

And yet all of you are lining up to buy new Galaxy S 4 or Note 3 next year
But yeah its true that neither of them was revealed at the CES

It's better that I haven't seen anything attractive in CES. All these money sucking toys will give me some time to gather more, lol. The only thing interested me is the Sony OLED T.V.

okay I stand corrected. I just saw the Lenovo K900 and video and all I can say is wow. And some impressive specs.

The most interesting part for me is the announcement of octa core, thats just wow, s4 and note 3 will come with it.

And its water resistant up to 1 meter, great for those who use their phones while on the toilet haha.

Would be keen to hold the Huawei 6.1" to see how bigger it feels than the note ii.
The most exciting thing at CES for me is the Oculus Rift. Not mobile I know, but it looks pretty awesome.

Note 2....Don't see it getting any better than this!

Ok folks.....so i just got my Note 2 yesterday. Last night i'm messing around with it and i then have this thought. Where the hell does Samsung go from here? I mean i am so pleased with this phone....but then in the back of my mind i think "Wait a sec....they are gonna come out with ANOTHER one of these next year!" And me being the tech nerd that i am i will likely get it. But seriously....WHAT else can they do? lol I bought my first Note at the beginning of the year.....so that's 2 $700+ smartphones in one year. A little ridiculous to some i'm sure.....but next year when this time rolls around Samsung is going to have to do something TRULY revolutionary to get me to switch! So what do you guys think? I LOVE this phone....just can't see it getting much better. Discuss......:good:
Better processor. Better battery. Better camera. Improved design and materials.
Dude seriously get down to earth. Dont mean to be rude of course. What i mean is there is only space for improvement and sell you updated device later on.

6 inches? That's not going to pocket-able. You might as well have the tablet. Even 5.5 is pushing IMO. But, yeah as long as it fits in my pockets.

There are places for lot more improvements. Better battery (maybe using different technology), flexible display, stylus with built-in mic/speaker like the BT s-pen but smaller and included with in it, which charges when it's inside the Note (whoa!), wireless charging.. hmm

Nice wish list i must say!
Sharp started to product 5-inch 1080p screens...
If the Note 3 got this kind of screen, i'll buy it for sure.
I do agree that the note 2 is so snappy that a faster cpu is of questionable bang/buck. Android needs to get better with multi threading.
Bigger screen is possible with less bezel. You'd have to lose that Samsung logo.

This device may look fantastic today and i'm sure it is which is why i'm also planning on getting one as soon as possible.
However, as i upgrade every two years and not every year due to contracts new better devices released inbetween is not really a issue. There will always be better devices released, you just have to accept that fact. I'm sure Samsung has many cards up it's sleeve with new things they plan on implement in future versions of this and their other devices. Things like user experience, interface, artificial intelligence, better camera, software, input, raw power and interaction with external products. The whole experience can evolve so much more than compared to what it looks like today but these things needs time to grow slowly into what they will become.

Well they probably gonna come out eith a better processor ( exynos 5250 I believe its called based on the new A15 architecture), I know the note 2 is the fastest thing out right now but when that new exynos comes out next year, itll make this note feel like turtle speed. Samsung is gonna kill it. But I agree, yhis phone is so perfect that Im not sure what else we really need. Higher res screen and stuff like that probably. Note 2 is AWESOME!

I guess the Note III will offer the following specifications:
1. Quadcore Exynos 5250 @ 2 - 2.5 Ghz
2. 2 GB RAM
3. A 5.8-6 inch display, higher resolution
4. Multiband-LTE as standard in the GT-N7200 (i.e. the base model N7200 is an LTE device - no more 3G only) - support for US LTE together with EU LTE would be perfect
5. VoLTE
6. A 12 MP-camera, improved sensor and 1080p video recording
7. 32 and 64 GB onboard memory + microSDXC slot
8. Android 4.2(?) Key Lime Pie or 5.0 (assuming that 4.2 arrives later this month or in November and 5.0 lands in June 2013)
9. A premium body similar to this Note II concept: Note II mockup
10. Bluetooth S-Pen as standard
11. Further improved S-Pen feature set
12. Improved window mode features
Sure. For me also. It's the best ever. And I'll not shift easly.

For 1 I'd like to see the Snapdragon S4 Pro (quad-core) only because it's actually a fusion of A9 and A15 architecture (and smaller transistor size = less power leak = less heat and power use) which means better performance. Also, I'd like a much better GPU... what don't these manufacturers understand? Phones are beginning to be like PCs the bottleneck is ALWAYS the GPU nowadays... sure we have quad-core CPUs in Android phones, but all the iDevices have GPUs with almost double the performance, c'mon!

Yeah, I was hoping for the Toshiba 1080p 5" displays announced back in March I believe to start showing up (Toshiba did say they were going to show up in devices Q4 2012). I mean Oppo did release a 5" 1080p phone (at least announced it), I'd consider it, but I need my wifi-calling on T-Mobile (good for international calls as long as you got wifi and for places where tmo reception goes kaput).
Although I want to see some 5.3" 1920x1200 screens please

Cores alone do not a processor make.
The Exynos 5 Dual-core might turn out to be faster than the Exynos 4 Quad.
It has all to do with the architecture, design layout and fabrication process.
Two no-brainer upgrades for next year's model:
[1] 1080p screen
[2] Power-efficient CPU & SOC (low-power).
Screen size of 5.5" is good, no need to go bigger. CPU can be dual or quad core, as long as it has a newer architecture with low-power consumption.
I cant do more than 5.5 inch screen honestly. Anything bigger will be in the realm of tablets.

They can do much better
I had a look at the GN2 and I really like it for me it is the best phone on the market right now. But I will not buy it yet because I do not feel that it is so much better than my GN1.
Think that they could go even bigger and maybe get rid of more Bazel I also think that they can do so much more around multi tasking - I mean the real deal like windows. They should also marry a bigger screen to a higher Res. It would make it awesome to look at.
I also think putting in something like Pureview would not hurt.
Its not all sweetness & light..
The horrid back ground hiss that's on the S3 radio is still present here - Come on Samsung it's FM radio & it's horrid.
I get a loud crackle when moving tracks with the latest Poweramp...
They can fit a 6" screen into the current 5'5 Galaxy note size right now. It would have to be glass to glass touchscreen with no bezel (maybe some at the bottom for the buttons)
So the people complaining that the 6" phone would be too big, look at the galaxy note 1 vs galaxy 2..the screen got bigger but the overall size got slimmer

And that will be the extent of it.
Because you can make the device taller, but you can't make it wider. Even if you need two hands to use the device properly, the width has to be small enough to be held in one hand.
That is where the Note II shines.
It is the biggest phone out there right now, but people can still hold it in one hand.
I don't like screens where they use a chunk of it for on-screen buttons and use that portion as part of the screen measurement.

Note 2... Padphone 2... FIGHT!

Okay I'll edit this later with all the known stats but for now please help me decide which is should blow my load on, the note 2 or the padphone 2.
In brief
amoled vs IPS
5,5 vs 4,7 + 10.1
Exynos vs S4
Polycarbonate (plastic) vs something better
16gb+SD vs 16gb (both may do bigger sometime circa 2113.)
Buy now vs Buy Dec (knowing Asus buy April or buy a Lemon)
Help please, I little stopped myself buying the note today because of how much better the padphone 2 looks to the PDP1.

Galaxy Note its an unique device.. You can not compare it to anything.. And everything depends on your needs and likes... I can not take anything less than 5.3" Wich its my note 1(waiting for my note 2 to arrive) specs wise the note 2 its the best device to date out there and even if later someone releases something better/faster in processor terms still can not match the 5.55" RGB super Amoled screen

Because this is the only Phablet out there, and it has some cons such as: old CPU and GPU (if comparing to Snapdragon S4 Pro with Adreno 320 GPU), no support from CM (yes, this is a deal breaker for me!), and I personally don't really like SAMOLED screens because of low brightness and bad whites, also they burn in, camera is also not the best out there today (look at the PadFone 2).

If you look at Asus record as far as android devices are concerned, there are many negative things to say. I had a TF101 and it was crap and looking at all the issues people keep having with their Asus android devices a miracle will have to happen for the padphone to work properly. I have had a 7.7 galaxy tab for a while now and i can count on the fingers of one hand how many times a program has FCed on it. Asus will probably paper release the Padfone 3 six months after the 2 just like they did with the Padfone 1. ..

Older / newer (processor term) doesn't mean anything.. Those are 2 different technologies.. It's like comparing the newer AMD against the "older" core i7 xtreme just plain bull****. Note wouldn't be any faster or smoother with snap dragon s4.. The gpu keeps the name but it has lots of improvements over older versions.. And to be honest even with my N7000 I can play any game in the play store...
About cm support.. Tw at this stage has no match feature/smoothness wise.. Why would I flash a very basic flat android when I have a better launcher made by samsung? (Btw if you like aosp looks just install nova /apex)
Camera its not better for mega pixels but the lense and my note does take greate pictures... And I'm not a professional photographer and If I were, I wouldn't use a phone to take pictures so that's just plain dumb.
SAMOLED its great.. I've owned s3, gnexus note 1, no problem so far.. And note 2 has RGB matrix so the little things that bothers me from pentile are now gone.. Bad whites? What do you do with whites? Everyone avoid whites.. Battery raper color...
Low brightness.. Wonder if you spend most of your time under the sun because that's the only condition in which you would need higher brightness and even so my Amoled devices have done well under sunny days..
You are trying to convince yourself of getting anything else but you are not looking at it in the right way... Note its an unique device.. Until now no matter what technology its out there nothing could match note 1 not even s3 or HTC one X why? ... Plain simple massive 5.3" screen/unique features only note 2 could take the crown and so will note 3...
With note devices just 2 things can happen or you hate it because of the size and would never get 1 or you completely love it and would never switch to anything smaller... Thing its that you gotta own the devices for some weeks to figure out that
Cheers

Why No Samsung this year?

I was just wondering why Google chose LG over Samsung. Had the Samsung Galaxy Nexus last year. Sold it for SG3. Big mistake. Even though I like SG3, not a Nexus. Will not do the same thing next year. I am keeping my Nexus.
Good question.
You never know Samsung and HTC might release their own version.
Because LG got from Quallcom to put the S4 Pro quicker than any HUGE manufacturer, they have the best screen out there, and letting Samsung doing the Nexus phone 3rd time a row?! Its rowing what Google is trying to do... And, they made the Nexus 10.
Thank god that Nexus is not a Samsung-plastic-crap! Samsung should really work on the material!

LG, you should make all of your phones Nexus-Like! Stock android experience, quick updates, and release all sources!
Compared to my Sensation 4g...the screen (glass) and outer shell of the phone was so soft and fragile. Betting my $350 that there will be better materials used on the N4.

Besides. Samsung did a Nexus 10 anyway.

Cool. Who cares about gorilla glass? It HELPS prevent scratches. Not cracks. Plus Samsung made a good product, LG WILL ruin it, I guarantee it.

Galaxy Nexus was already dated on its launch - old GPU from Nexus S etc. LG Nexus 4 got great hw and is much better today than GN was one year ago. Besides Samsung didnt made first Nexus, but HTC did.

Because of the failure that is the Optimus 2X..
Funny, how all it takes is a company to make one great product to change everyone's opinion. People hated the idea of a Samsung nexus as well, especially after the Galaxy S 1 debacle. Sammy improved the devices despite still having the radio issues and everybody loves Sammy now. LG looks to have made a solid device, well see how it holds up in real world usage, if its halfway decent, people will love LG too...
Hate the resolution, the 1280x768. Youtube won't be fullscreen, 720p, 1080p won't be full screen, it will have some black bars, which isn't bad but it does annoy me. But the drawer now consist of 5 icons a row, doesn't look nice compared to the standard 4, suppose a dpi change will fix that.
Don't get why users are hating on plastic or poly carbonate but yet Nokia 'Lumia' are getting praise for using that material. I prefer having poly carbonate than Gorilla glass, since when you drop it, it'll crack, whereas plastic wouldn't crack as bad and you'll have to get a glass replacement etc (iPhone style).
The display contrast is bad, don't know why it was hyped up that bad. The LG Optimus G has around 1,800 contrast whereas iPhone 5, Asus Padfone 2, S3 are all over 3,xxx. Watch users complain 'it's more natural', no it isn't, it'll be more washed out compared to the other screens. Unless the LG Nexus 4 deploys something with more 'contrast' in there True HD IPS.
Thats all the things I dislike about it well maybe the crappy low storage as well but I might be getting the Nexus 4, £279 for a spec like this, can't really go wrong.

False. While the GPU used in the Nexus S and the Galaxy Nexus shared the same name, they offered vastly different performance levels. The PowerVR SGX540 in the Galaxy Nexus was significantly overclocked compared to the version in the Galaxy S/Nexus S, and was tied to much faster RAM.
Qualcomm did the same thing this past year. They took the Adreno 220, bumped the speed from 266mhz to 400mhz, then paired it with faster RAM. Instead of keeping the same name like PowerVR did, they renamed it the Adreno 225 to avoid confusion.
The GPU in the Galaxy Nexus, at the time if release last year, was among the fastest out there. It didn't have the fill-rate of the Mali-400 inside the sGS2, but it had much better geometric performance, making it a better GPU for real-world games. It's still more than adequate today.
I'm not picky on materials as long as the construction feels tight. Smooth plastic, matte plastic, glass, whatever. The only thing I am kind of partial to is brush aluminum (a delight that I still enjoy about my beater Captivate).
Maybe because Samsung would of insisted on Exynos rather than the superior S4! And it would of been cheap plastic

I think Google picks the SOC. Look no further than the Galaxy Nexus, which used OMAP when Samsung was keen on using Exynos. I'm pretty sure the only reason Exynos 5 was used over Snapdragon S4 for the Nexus 10 was due to the GPU. Adreno 320 is overrated. It's marginally faster than the Mali-400MP in the SGS3/Note II in most benchmarks, much faster in some, but has a beefier CPU behind it. In GPU-specific tests they come out much closer, which tells me that the GPU isn't as powerful as some think. Mali-T604 (Exynos 5), however, is MUCH faster than both. That was needed to power a 2560x1600 display.
As for the CPU component, DMIPS is the easiest and most accurate way to measure general power between ARM CPUs. Snapdragon S4 uses Krait (3.3 DMIPs/clock), while Exynos 5 uses Cortex A15 (3.5 DMIPS/clock). At 1.5ghz and 1.7ghz respectfully, that puts the Snapdragon S4 pro at 4,950 DMIPS per core, or 19,800 DMIPS total. The Exynos 5, however, cranks out 5,950 DMIPS per core, or 11,900 DMIPS total. However, there are two caveats here;
1. Mobile apps are predominantly single-threaded, so even in a heavy (by mobile standards) multi-tasking environment, you're not going to make much use of those third and fourth cores. For apps that use 1-2 cores, Exynos comes out on top.
2. Krait is asynchronous, and A15 is synchronous. For an environment that is heavy on multiple processes, you'll want synchronous, which is likely why so many of the Windows RT tablets announced last week use Tegra 3 (Cortex A9) over Krait.

No one's sure. Samsung's gone out of its way to build the "Note" brand and a 7" (N5100) has already passed through regulatory bodies. They even developed a separate “Note” category on their website(s) and moved the N2 out of phones and combined it with the Note 10.1. Licensing Wacom technology and including an inductive display raises Samsung's costs. 1080P displays are going to be hard enough to build in large quantities economically without adding the complexity of an inductive display. It doesn't make sense to offer a 5", 5.5" and 7" devices with Note features. The mainstream SGS3's sold over 30MM and counting. The Note will probably sell 1/3 of that. What's the benefit of blurring the success of the Galaxy line by making it too "Note-like" and what's the value of the Note line if the features apply to every high-end device Samsung makes? It could be signaling a change in strategy but, at this point, it's just pure speculation from less than credible sources.

it is the N O T E 2 G E N E R A L F O R U M, cletus. i can speculate about the pimples on your ass... as long as it's related to note 2, maybe note 2's competition. galaxy s iv has little to do with note 2, there is a galaxy s iii has it's own and honestly since we are way off topic wrong forum have you had those pimples taken care of? heard the s pen works great. :victory:
I know what is going to happen. I am going to repeat same mistakes that I made last year.
I had Note 1, bought SGS3 and regretted going back to smaller screen, grabbed Note 2 as soon as it launched. Then Nexus 4 launched, I got that and again felt out of place and again went back to Note 2 and I am again happy.
Now I have Note 2, SGS 4 will come out, it will be great and I will be tempted to ditch Note 2 and get SGS 4. I will do that. I will miss big screen, I will get Note 3 when it launches and ordered will be restored.
I need only 1 reason to reject it. AMOLED...
I love this thread Can I have a coffee machine in the S4 please?
XDA App through my GNote 2... What else...
This is a stupidest rumors I ever heard. Most funniest is key lime pie, which is not out yet. It will be great if SGS4/Note3 will be at least at Android 4.2.1, but I'm 100% sure that SGS4 still be at 4.1.1 or 4.1.2 Android.
I heard the note 3 has such good a battery that it will have a built in power generator to power a small household.

The Note 2 Is Not Out-of-Date.

Now that CES is over, I still feel that the Note 2 is a strong contender 'till Q3 of this year.
Other than Chinese phones from ZTE, Huawei, and Lenovo with questionable hardware, software, and support, I saw nothing that was 5+" that I'd consider a N2 competitor. I think people bought the N2 for different reasons. I bought it because of the Wacom digitizer with palm rejection, S Pen, S Note, and the other functional enhancements Samsung's added. Nothing has been announced, leaked, or even rumored to compete with those features. For those that bought the N2 as a "giant phone" and nothing more there will be lots of newer phones with smaller and larger displays and higher PPI and faster SoCs out or announced in Q1 this year.
Note 2 was outdated as soon as it was released just like any other technology. And this thread since there is another just like it.

Samsung should come out with a very small smartphone. That way there will be a phone I'll want to buy to switch to when I want to go mountain biking. Use the Note 2 when I want productivity at my fingertips, and then the micro smartphone for when I want to be on the move. Something the size of the RazrM, possibly a little smaller and defiinitley thinner.

I don't see any phones on the market with much faster CPUs! Or with more RAM? Camera specs can be argued (more mpx doesn't mean better pictures). The only thing I can see as an upgrade in other phones is their 1080p displays. But I have a large battery. I have a stylus. I have a notification light. I have a removable battery, too! I have a big Samsung community behind me as well.
If you really feel like your device is outdated already then I think you have an issue with technology, and not the actual phone itself. if you really feel that your phone is outdated the moment it gets released then you must never feel content with anything you buy!
It's fast, and it has top specs if you ignore the 1080p display. I don't see any other phones with a wacom digitizer pen! I'd rather keep this display and the pen than have some over hyped 1080p display and feel like I have a GIANT PHONE.
