[Q] N4 has no Voice Dialing / Voice Assitant? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just received my phone today.I know that there is "Voice Search" and "Google Now" built in, but I cannot seem to launch them from the lock screen using a headset.
I have also tested the headset (3 button), and it does work; I can play and stop music both locked and unlocked screen and Google Now activates when I hold middle button unlocked, but nothing happens when the phone is on lock screen.
As far as I am concerned, "Google Now" & "Voice Search" are useless unless I can activate them while they are in my pocket, for driving and walking. Furthermore, when I ask it to send a message to someone, it simply displays the message, not repeating it to me, or asking me if I would like to send. I see lots of reviews, claiming "Google Now" is far superior to S-voice and Siri (iPhone) but in my opinion, they should not be categorized together, "Google Now" simply does not do the things I need it to do. If at any point, I need to look at the screen, or press something on the screen, the whole purpose of Voice activation is rendered useless. I cannot be the only one out there with this problem. I am open to any suggestions to solve this issue, or else I must go back to iPhone for the sake of the voice dialing that is headset activated, as well as the ability to read out my messages and send them.
I have tried 3rd party apps like Headset Button, with no luck and it still does not allow Google Now to run in the background with screen off, and requires another third party app, Screen Off & Lock to do just turn off the screen with a different combination of presses on the headset. The lack of any sort of physical button on the N4 is also another problem.
I am open to any suggestions or comments if I am simply just missing something from the features. Please excuse me if I sound rude or a hater, all I am trying to do is find out the problem to my issue, and potentially inform others if they have the same needs as me.
Cheers. :good:

So because it doesn't do the things YOU need it to do, they shouldn't be categorized together?
If you want to access Now with your headset then turn off the screen lock function.

AFAIK, I don't think Google Now will do the things you want it to do out of the box. If you're willing to use third-party apps, though, I think you may be able to get the behavior you need by using Tasker (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.dinglisch.android.taskerm). A quick search also turned up this app (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sonalight&hl=en), which supposedly can read/send text messages by voice alone.
As far as physical buttons go, well .. that's something you're just going to have to get used to, sorry

[REQ] Disable Touch Panel from shortcut

I have tried to make this myself but im not the best at c# I was hoping someone would like to write a small app that disables and enables the touch panel without using the gsensor or light sensor or nav sensor. i want to use this with a mort script so it would launch the app to disable touch panel then run the rest of the script then launch the app to enable it. i don't care if its two separate apps. if someone can help i would appreciate it so much. thanks
This isn't an actual shortcut, its a bit better than that if you ask me.
http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-sensorlock.html
Basically you just spin the phone in your hands and it will lock, watch the video, it shows what to do
I've also found an application called sleep, I used that for a while but now I'm on WinMo 6.5 and I just use the lock button instead. Just do a quick google for a program called sleep, shouldn't be too hard to find.
And also there is an inbuilt lock thingie where you can set your phone to lock the screen if you hold down the end call button for like 5 seconds but that one is a bit of a pain cause you gotta hold it for ages before it locks and then when you try to unlock it is hard especially if youre outside with the sun shining.

question about SIP default
i know this may not be the most appropriate thread to put this question on, my apologies. From the title I thought it may be. Anyhow, I installed phm registry editor and am trying to learn to use it, but not sure how to find something im wanting to change. My SIP default seems to be that anytime i open my sms inbox, or email, etc, my keyboard pops up without me selecting it to do so. I want to change it so it only pops up when I select the little tab/icon to MAKE it pop up.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Much thanks in advance.

[Q] Faster way to get Google Now voice Search? [UK]

Hello,
To get to a quick voice search on GN I have to:
Press the power button
Slide finger from bottom of screen to activate GN
Click the microphone button.
With iPhone's Siri, I just press and hold the centre button.
Is there a way I can get to GN quicker?
A shortcut key? volume rocker? or something?
Thanks
Flash cm10.1 and use lock screen shortcuts.

Was hoping for a solution on stock ROM unrooted...
Any other thoughts?
Thanks

Add a widget to your homescreen, maybe? You'll have plenty of more options if you root.

Doesn't your gn have the small circle at the bottom of lock screen? That you just swipe up.
It's a feature built in jelly bean.

Yes, it does, as I pointed out in my OP.
But I want something quicker...
You're assuming every time you want to use Google Now your GN is locked. So let's assume the iPhone is also locked.
1. Press power button/wake phone.
2. Tap home button.
3. Continue holding button until it 'beeps'.
4. Speak.
5. Wait approx. 3 times the load time of Google Now for an answer (on a good day).
The iPhone clearly has a longer, more ineffective process.
So now let's be a little more realistic. Let's assume that your phone is already awake and all you need to do if within an app is to simple press your home button.
With the Galaxy Nexus you have that nice big Google Search bar on the top of every home screen. Use that widget. The microphone icon on that widget (to the far right) takes you directly into the voice search function. With one click. Use it .
If that's still not good enough, root your phone. Its a Nexus. Then you can have so many more options.
Swipe up for the voice search, hold home button for voice search, lock screen Short cut, there are SO MANY options with AOSP based ROMs especially. Root your phone.

I'm surprised hotword detection wasn't mentioned yet. Have that enabled.
From lockscreen:
Power button
Swipe up from bottom to get to Google Now
Say "Google" followed by your voice search.

I can't get this to work at all and see no option for it. Maybe it's US only

You just press the home button for 2 secs and Siri starts with a beep. This works when the phone is off.
This is useful - as this approach doesn't require you to look at the device, you can do it blind [driving], simply adjust the phone in your hand, and press the only button on the front, then start talking. Eyes stay on the TV/Road/Steak.
I'm not saying that Siri is better than GN. In fact, in some basic tests GN is far far far better and faster! I love it.
I just wish I could get to it quicker than currently, as quick as I can with Siri.

Hotword is US only unfortunately - Thought I'd throw in the [UK] tag in the thread title in case anyone thought about hotword
I was hoping that there would be a reply that says "yeah sure, just press volume down for 3secs and it will start!"... I guess not!
Sounds like a feature for a custom ROM?

I had a similar problem, but if you change your default language to English (US) google hot words should show up when you try and use it next time.
The only issue i noticed with this is, is that you had an american dictionary whilst using your keyboards.

Switch off screen trick

Thought I'd share an interesting discovery,
I'm on the stock rom, and have both google search and google now disabled. I discovered by accident that whenever I press any of the three buttons and swipe up (similar to how you launch google now, but with any of the buttons), the screen is switched off and locked.
I dont 't know if anyone has noticed this before, but this is very useful since you can lock the phone from anywhere without having to use the hardware button.
I don't how you did this, but it doesn't work for me.
For me, when swiping up, if I move to the "google circle" it opens Google search, and if I don't move enough to that circle, nothing happens ...

As i mentioned, I have google search disabled as well. It also works with any of the 3 buttons. My phone isnt rooted or anything of that sort.
Install "screen off" app and do what khaledm_92 says

Easy mode hides mute and headset buttons

My father has this device and has vision limitations and I set the display to use the Easy Mode. He told me that when he is on a call the mute and headset buttons don't show up. He has difficulty reading the top bar even with the large font selected. I think what would work for him instead of enlarging text in the bar would be to have a lock screen that has large icons/widgets that would be a way to fix this? Also is there a way for him to open either Waze or Google Navigation from a contact and also if S Voice would do this.
Also I don't want to anything that could be an issue with AT&T and his warranty. I know this might be a lot do but any help is appreciated.
Thanks

1.) Easy Mode does disable those functions when you're in a call. On a phone call, the only options displayed are "Mute", "Hide/Unhide Keypad" and "End Call".
2.) There isn't a way to "fix" the native lock screen with larger icons/widgets. The only enhancements you can make is the clock/date size from small, medium or large. If you do want customization for the lock screen, maybe search the Play Store for a lock screen launcher they may add the customization you want.
3.) If he is using a Galaxy S 4, Google Navigation is integrated into Google Maps now. Voice commands with S Voice will open native apps pre-installed on the phone such as this. That shouldn't be a problem. Waze, which is not native and is installed via the Play Store, probably will not open via S Voice. Again, there may be easier ways to do it. For example, I don't use S Voice on my GS4, I use Google Now.

Easier and integrates well with Android devices.
Hope this info helps!

weird screen bug

This has happened twice today. I am using the phone and the voice typing display will not go away. I can use the phone.. .i can go to the homescreen, open apps, look at settings, etc, but i cannot close the voice prompt, and i can't use it.
It essesentially makes the phone useless until i reboot.
I am not sure why it is doing this. Not rooted nor unlocked or anything.. just stock.
The other thing it is doing is that sometimes when i wave my hand over the screen i will see the unlock screen. it will have the time and a lock icon below it ... if i touch the lock icon, it moves to a lower (on the screen) position and when i re adjust to hit the lock again it moves back up. Not sure how to screen shot this... maybe a video from a different phone.
when this happens, it will unlock by pressing the power button. I think this has something to do with the smart lock. DAMN google for forcing you to have a lock when you use Android Pay. Never had this problem on my Note 4 with Wallet.
Anyway, any help on either of these bugs would be appreciated
ok, i can reproduce the bug.
can someone else try this to confirm?
- with the phone screen off have someone send you a text message.
- swipe up directly to messages. ( use the google one, but i am not sure if it matters.)
- reply to the message with a google voice typing
- hit the power button to turn off the screen.
- Have the person text you again.
- open message by swiping up to it.
At this point the tap to speak screen will be there and not go away until you reboot.
no one else?
here is a video showing the problem I can't believe I am the only one experiencing this
