Thought I'd share an interesting discovery,
I'm on the stock rom, and have both google search and google now disabled. I discovered by accident that whenever I press any of the three buttons and swipe up (similar to how you launch google now, but with any of the buttons), the screen is switched off and locked.
I dont 't know if anyone has noticed this before, but this is very useful since you can lock the phone from anywhere without having to use the hardware button.
I don't how you did this, but it doesn't work for me.
For me, when swiping up, if I move to the "google circle" it opens Google search, and if I don't move enough to that circle, nothing happens ...

As i mentioned, I have google search disabled as well. It also works with any of the 3 buttons. My phone isnt rooted or anything of that sort.
Install "screen off" app and do what khaledm_92 says

The Hero has this function where you hold down the search button and it launches google voice search, or the other option messaging.
I noticed when you press this while in the "all programs" screen, it activates it immediately even if you just press it.
This bug won't let me search all programs. Anybody have a workaround for this?
Maybe disabling the long press?
Even uninstalling Google Search voice, it just exits all programs when you do a search button.
I'm using the Modaco 1.1 core, I'm not sure if this is the same with the stock hero.
Thanks!
I still have the stock Hero ROM.
When I press the magnifying glass hw button while in all programs, it briefly flashes the 'Search programs'. But then closes all progs and takes me back to Home with the Google voice search in the foreground
I definitely still haven't found a workaround for this, and this is definitely a bug.
Hopefully sprint fixes this on the upcoming update.
After a little more research, apparently this has alot to do with handcent's quick text message function problem goes away when you uninstall handcent. which is kinda retarded.

Hmm...I never installed handcent. Don't do a lot of text messaging so I left that alone. Maybe uninstalling handcent fixes something? Who knows..
I just tried this, and don't seem to have a problem... I press the button for all programs, then press the magnifying glass and I can "search programs"... I have a European Hero, maybe that makes the difference ? Don't know...
This is odd, but I noticed this thread, had the same issue with google search (voice search) crashing when the program tray was open. But I also had (still have) the issue of updated programs not updating title/icon correctly after a reboot.
After reading up I saw that clearing out the boot-cache fixed the program title/icon issue. I did this and noticed that the I no longer got a crash when I hit the search icon (the magnifying glass hardware button) while the program tray was open.
See if it works for you, but basically (you must be rooted) run the command:
'rm -rf /data/boot-cache/*'
and my search/voice search from the program tray started working
I find the search button that takes you directly to Bing obtrusive, is there any way of de-activating it or using it for another function?
Than you
do you can give us the registry key
i could like use it at people key
thank u
I hope in future it will be possible to deactivate button, if application doesn't support search.
Most of the times, I click it accidentally.
same problem here...
hate the search key ;-)
I find it super obtrusive to be honest - especially in landscape mode - 8 out of 10 IE viewing in landscape finishes by accidently pressin search and not being able to go back!
Anyone with an idea how to switch it off?
I hate it, I hate it, I hate it!
I so wish these buttons were real hardware buttons, so that going near them wouldn't take me away from a game which takes a minute to then re-load. Grr
Agreed - the search key sucks. You don't search much, and you always seem to hit it by accident.
Personally would love to turn it off, or turn it to a long key-press, then at least you won't hit it accidently.
Probably some registry-settings can do this.
I like it... I like how it's used by different applications to search just those applications (email, IMDB, etc). Yes, I sometimes press it by accident, but I can just press Back and I'm back where I was...

For me it goes back to IE
Edit: unless you mean after you've actually done a search?
that is really strange but no - I did not perform any search.
I feel it has to do smth with my location settings or some other settings that are mysterious to me.
I noticed that since playing with location settings to access the marketplace which is still not available in my country - I changed the location to UK, but IE search setting to my locale - When I press the search button I am not redirected to a nice bing search page with the fullscreen background picture but rather to bing's web address (and the displayed picture only takes 40-50% of the screen and is too small to enter anything without zooming in).
This could be the case with my problem.
Anyway - still hate the search button and would love someone to find a cure for it ;-)
I looked around but didn't find anything, although that doesn't mean anything.
My question is that when holding the home button, you get a whole semi circle, but just giogke now or whatever that silly thing is. Is there a way of adding programs or shortcuts to this popup. I have zero use for the Google thing so seems a shame if I am unable to add more useful items to this semi circle. Could prove pretty useful.

I haven't seen anywhere you can add to that or change it. I love the google now thing, just to be able to tell it to wake me up in an hour if nothing else:laugh:
Try this app if you haven't already though, it will let you launch an app just by sliding in from the side of the screen, or bottom, or whereever you want.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=mobi.conduction.swipepad.android&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsIm1vYmkuY29uZHVjdGlvbi5zd2lwZXBhZC5hbmRyb2lkIl0.
Instead of launching Google Now you could get get an app launch list using 'Launch Now', which replaces default behavior. Just serach for it in PlayStore, as I may not insert links (10 posts rule)....
There's a way for people who want to hook into the swipe up action that may not be documented. Apps like "Sudo Quicklaunch" make the system switch the icon to a generic search icon and show you the standard action completion pop-up. (One can see this in the app's promotional video.) I haven't personally tested that app, but I have seen the swipe up reassignment behavior with "Secure Settings." The Secure Settings app actually changes the icon displayed by the swipe up menu, when you tell it to "Always" use that app, and Google Search does the same thing. Coincidentally, the same reassignment behavior appears to be possible with the shop icon in the stock launcher. (I saw it for myself in the days of Honeycomb with the transition from the original Honeycomb Market app to the new, unified Market app, because both were installed, it asked me to choose when I tapped shop.)
This has happened twice today. I am using the phone and the voice typing display will not go away. I can use the phone.. .i can go to the homescreen, open apps, look at settings, etc, but i cannot close the voice prompt, and i can't use it.
It essesentially makes the phone useless until i reboot.
I am not sure why it is doing this. Not rooted nor unlocked or anything.. just stock.
The other thing it is doing is that sometimes when i wave my hand over the screen i will see the unlock screen. it will have the time and a lock icon below it ... if i touch the lock icon, it moves to a lower (on the screen) position and when i re adjust to hit the lock again it moves back up. Not sure how to screen shot this... maybe a video from a different phone.
when this happens, it will unlock by pressing the power button. I think this has something to do with the smart lock. DAMN google for forcing you to have a lock when you use Android Pay. Never had this problem on my Note 4 with Wallet.
Anyway, any help on either of these bugs would be appreciated
ok, i can reproduce the bug.
can someone else try this to confirm?
- with the phone screen off have someone send you a text message.
- swipe up directly to messages. ( use the google one, but i am not sure if it matters.)
- reply to the message with a google voice typing
- hit the power button to turn off the screen.
- Have the person text you again.
- open message by swiping up to it.
At this point the tap to speak screen will be there and not go away until you reboot.
no one else?
here is a video showing the problem I can't believe I am the only one experiencing this

I can try it when I get my phone, but that's a few weeks away...
So on my note 4 long pressing the home button opened up the Google application. Now with the v20 though it opens up an overlay. However, about half the time or more that I long press the home button, the overlay doesn't open or it immediately closes or when I try searching for something it randomly deletes everything I've typed and closes my keyboard. Does anyone else have this issue or know how to fix it?
The overlay was a change introduced in Android 6 and later called Google now on tap. As far as the issues you speak of I can't say that I have any problems with the way the app works at all. Perhaps it could be attributed to use error. Could it be you don't fully know how now in tap is supposed to work and what makes it different than the older push to open Google now shortcut on Android before Android 6?
I suggest a quick "Google" for Google now on tap so that you understand what has changed and how it exactly is supposed to work.

@EROMITLAB No, I'm fully aware of how it works and how to use it. I was also aware of why the overlay was changed. I'm not attempting to use the now on tap portion, nine times out of ten I'm only ever trying to quickly get to Google and perform a basic search and the white square will appear around the end of the screen as if it's going to open or when I go to search it will just close. Yes, definitely user error. How could I ever be so foolish as to not know how to use Google. Clearly I'm the reason the app won't load or even occasionally pops up with a force close.

No need to mock me I was honestly just trying to help. There are occasional post from folks in here who aren't as tech savvy as the majority of people in these forums. Sorry you felt disrespected or insulted.
Anyway no I don't have these issues at all with the V20. Sorry about your luck.

Hmm, just tried it out and it works like it should for me. On a Tmo V20.

I have the same problem. It's definitely not just you! Although, mine never force closes and always opens the overlay search box, it ALWAYS closes out my search after typing a few characters, and then I have to start again. Frustrating.

Hey, I just tried something and it's an acceptable workaround for me. Hold down the home key until the overlay search box appears and wait a few seconds to let it calm down. Then tap the menu button at the bottom right corner of the screen and choose Settings. Now toggle off the first menu item to disable Now On Tap.
Once that's done, long-pressing the home key will launch the standard Google application, and you can start typing immediately without getting kicked out.

I get the same issue when trying to type into the Google Now on Tap. I'll begin typing then after a few seconds the keyboard will disappear along with what I typed in. I've seen one person say that it was Nova Launcher and once they switched it, the issue was gone. That did not work for me.

Dude, just do what I suggested in the post directly above yours. Turn off Now On Tap and you're all good.
