Ubuntu on the play - Xperia Play General

I know the play has limited hardware capabilities but does anyone think we can get this working http://www.phonearena.com/news/Canonical-announces-Ubuntu-Phone-OS-coming-in-early-2014_id38231 I also know that its a year away but hay just saw this post and thought about getting devs thinking about it.

I think the xperia play will be at the end of his life at this time o,o
you should have posted this in the general discussion section, this doesn't belong to the dev section

Yea I thought about that but the play has that one thing no other phone does and with the gamepad people may get new phones but keep the play around for moding and well gaming
And well sorry

1Ghz cortex A9 processor is alot different from our snapdragon.
+ its in different architecture (which has been hyped to be "twice as effective") which alone is enough to ditch any Xplay portting dreams.

Maybe overclock is the answer

thanks for the very interesting find but from my understanding this is requiring cyanogen 10.1 and by my best understanding we dont have that but we do have meany android 4.2.2 roms in progress....like slimbean, pacman and a few others are being updated to android 4.2.2 and maybe then we could get a start on Ubuntu.

I have to correct you, at the moment we have cyanogenmod 10.1, you can find it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2066733 So maybe isn't a very stable rom but at the moment we have access to 4.2.1 and soon great developers such as Wedgess, CosmicDan and cj360 (and more that I can't remenber sorry ) will give us an upgrade to 4.2.x
With this great people our phones will never die
Sent from my R800i using xda premium

IMHO it is useless, for now Ubuntu Phone (or Tablet) is only a UI running into a chrooted cyanogenmod 10.1, with the possibility to do.... nothing.
Seriously, i've tried it on my nexus 7, and you can only try the menu and say "oh", it isn't the preview of an OS, it is useful as a video preview

After looking more into this OS I am pretty excited about its potential.
The Android OS code needed to be translated twice because it run ontop of a Java virtual machine. And being coded in Java it is naturally a bit slow, which is why Android phone need such high specs and yet it still lags at times.
Ubuntu Mobile seems to be C++ based (as well as utillizing QML [Qt javascript] and HTML5) so it should be faster. Base on this it should be able to run better on older single core ARM cpus.
Another great thing about Ubuntu Mobile is it will use the Qt framework for GUI, Qt ofcourse is the backbone of KDE. It's great open development platform that is already popular among Linux developers, and its good that Ubuntu decided to go with it instead of creating some proprietary thing that they tend to do.
Adam Outler said he was able to install deb packages on it using apt-get, which mean it is compatible with deb packages and can get access to the huge linux (arm) package libraries. This is a huge deal meaning its a real linux OS.
All of these seem to reminiscing of the decrepit Maemo OS that had so much potential, but didn't get much notice. Ubuntu state they want to make the OS compatible with Android apps, so I'm definitely looking forward to see all the developments for this OS.
Also don't mistake Ubuntu for Android with Ubuntu Phone, they are two different thing. The former allow Ubuntu desktop to appear when its docked while the phone is running Android, this never really caught on (See: Motorola ridiculous pricing fail). Ubuntu Phone is the whole OS in the phone and potential for desktop mode when docked.

you are correct, but looking into the future, right? as only Tegra3 devices will have NEON support which htc roms use, and our tablet do not have.
so yes, but in a future nvidia tablet not a500. or just the new toshiba qualcomm based tablet, that should work fine too.

The NEON instruction set has been around since the Cortex A8. But yes, the Iconia's chip lacks the NEON instructions. That problem aside, I'm fairly confident based on what I've seen of the Sense 3 ports to devices they were never meant for, that this can ( and hopefully will ) be done.
@timtucker
i fully agree.. i seen sense3 on qualcomm devices too but again, you request it for Tegra devices, totally different specs.
Unless someone can rewrite drivers, which is not normally seen in any port done, and make the needed framework change, it will not happen.
again, the new Toshiba AT200 device is qualcomm based, its very compatible, but tegra2 is a league of its own,for better and for worse..
If you got a non-qualcomm device with sense, provide a link at lets see how good a port they did, if it exists. Could be just a clock they ported but a complete framework with compiled library support does not exist unless you look at qualcomm based similar hardware specifications.
Acer liquid, Nexus 1 & Galaxy s 1 all had sense ported. But only the samsung had a different chipset.
Good luck devs

It's not about running it better than ICS, it's about game compatibility with the touchpads and the overall gaming experience compared to Gingerbread.
Hence why they didn't update to ICS in the first place, It's extremely unlikely that we will get Jelly Bean or anything else as a matter of fact tbh. The only way we can get Jelly Bean is by porting but gaming will always be a problem with roms from ICS onwards.

I agree that there's so many useless threads which have been created over and over again with people moaning even though its for their own good. Then they wonder why the get insulted and called noobs etc.
Plus some people on this forum are so ungrateful to what we devs give to them and just always complain, You can never win with some people hence why I stopped developing my ICS Rom further with constant posts saying touchpads aren't working blahblah..

Yeah, I would agree with your point, ICS performance-wise is no doubt far better than Gingerbread (not to mention Jelly Bean), but I don't see it in the last ICS Beta on my Xperia Play ... the reason being ... may be lack of good driver support, if there's no official driver support, and Sony just expect hack work from the XDA community can resolve this issue they are too cheap-skate ... no offends, I think the open-source initiative is pure good, but official support is crucial too ...

[Discussion Thread] Android 4.3

As you may know or not there was a found leak yesterday of REAL android 4.3 for the Samsung Galaxy S4 I-9505.
Well how does this relate to us?
Well we all are interested to see the difference in the system.
I thought it would be a good idea to keep a discussion thread just in case someone brings it up and people go off topic.
Some quick info on the firmware:
- A lot of backdoor additions such as the new norm of Low Power Bluetooth support.
- This version is NOT KEY LIME PIE.
- This version has almost no UI changes, but noticeable changes include settings access method in the camera e.t.c
- Some apps have Android 4.3 and even the modem name attached into the description when accessing app info.
- Known to increase benchmark scores by approximately 1800 in Antutu.
- Has a SeLinux button at bottom of About Phone in Settings.

Even if the performance on Android 4.3 would be better, we would sadly never get it to a state on the Xperia Play so that it can be used as a daily driver. We're not even able to get wifi working on android 4.2!
I don't think anything above 4.1 is worth working on.

If you mix this rumor with the other rumor that Motorola has some secret new low-spec'd phones coming out, there may be some truth to it. I certainly hope so.
Personally I believe our phone is good enough to run JB. I don't see why it couldn't run Android 5.0 well.
JB performance is impressive and a lot of people don't understand RAM Consumption to a full extent on Android.
I think even 4.2.2 won't do the play any bad.

KitKat is all fine and dandy but without, I am sure, additional sources released by Sony (Ericsson) we will probably never get a JB kernel working and still retain full Xperia PLAY compatibility... then again I may be completely wrong and if I am someone correct me. I have stayed pretty much on GB for gaming. Either way, thanks for sharing... although I think this should go to the General forum.... anyways... thread on.
google says that they made the OS smaller and after so old devices that didn't get in the past update can now get update because they resolve many issues.

True but they also stated those will need to be updated by either the carrier or the manufacturer of the device(s). As $ony long ago gave up on the PLAY, I think its incredibly unlikely we will see any support form Sony and or even source releases.
Still, it would be awesome if we can get it up and running, but dont forget the highest kernel we can sort of get working, is kernel 3.4.
Kitkat would be an even higher kernel number.
Google isn't even releasing KitKat for the Galaxy Nexus. Sony isn't going to do it either, and it would need hardware drivers from Qualcomm side too.
Why is this thread in the dev section?
is that true?

They abandoned it,yes. As far as i know, there are no new models build and everything that is floating around in shops are the last produced batches, not getting the update to Android 4 kinda sealed this assumption
I don't know if the X Play will ever get KitKat but Google introduced a new runtime called ART to replace Dalvik with KitKat, on my Nexus 4 it really improve the performance to a substantial amount, so maybe that will help as well.

Would be great if Sony would pay more attention to their old phones, specially because they cancelled the ics update so sudden.
But i don´t think this will happen.
And that's one reason I won't buy Sony again.

so? is there anyone working on kitkat roms for xPlay? or its abandoned at all?
By the looks of it, KitKat is out of reach for our device, theres barely any 4.1 or 4.2 jellybean roms functioning, what makes you think we will get 4.4 any time soon? Our Play is best optimised for GB due to performance issues as ICS+ isn't 100% functional on our play. Don't believe me? try any ics rom out and sooner or later you will find out that games will lag and memory will tend to be low. Sorry but this is the bottom line for our xperia play.
Legacyxperia (mostly mike) is working to get gully working 3.4 kernel. Than we wpuld be able to boot kitkat.

So, this is a great new !!
http://fxpblog.co/firefoxos/testing-firefox-os-on-sony-xperia-sp/
I had one question always.
Can we xsp users multi boot?
great ! firefox on sp wow
No, it's a side project so it doesn't get much time. Release won't be for several weeks. The issues are not only on the side of device porting but also on the side of Mozilla. It is still under active development, unlike Android which is only released when it is complete.
Yeah, but of we get Ubuntu, it'd better right? But alas, no dev to port it for xsp. Same is for Firefox. As @Levered said it'll take a lot of time to get updates from the op if it gets ported

Oh man
This is getting awesome!! I just want to try Ubuntu os but I'm a noob[emoji53]. So I'll rather wait and not make any threads for request.
And thanks man. You are awesome too for giving us hopes for a different os[emoji6]

I'm curious, what are you guys 'eager' to see this?
The reason for no release is due to camera. From what I can tell the camera blobs depend on some Android specific parts which will never be part of FxOS (of course).
Unless this is solved then I will probably not release this for Xperia SP as nobody will use it without a functioning camera.
I'm considering getting Xperia E1 to continue this project as this hardware is better supported in FxOS and it also looks like the camera blobs do not have this limitation.

You caused it lol by posting this and showing a video everyone got all excited also you could just release non working build like many devs do with their custom ROMs: on some phones the phone might never have working wi-fi on custom ROMs (desire c fixed after about a year of tinkering) or if you check out the HTC one x custom ROMs they have a lot of stuff broken too!

No way, missing camera (and bluetooth) are missing features too big to warrant a release.
Besides, would anyone really permanently switch from Android to FxOS on Xperia SP if I fixed these two issues and released it? I'd bet money on it that people would use it for a couple of hours maximum, then realize they need the Google services that push all notifications to the phone.
(FxOS doesn't have push notifications for most things, pretty much everything has to be reloaded / refreshed manually, even syncing contact data.)
tested on older device..
I have already tested Firefox OS on my older Xperia E Dual device.. it kinda sucked.. I didn't like the way it felt and it was laggy and super slow.. maybe it is better here in XSP
