I have a Nexus 4 and I'm running the stock ROM, but I am rooted. I encrypted my phone and have tried a factory rest in recovery and in the settings on the phone. It simply restarts and it's still encrypted. In recovery I'm using CM and it errors stating it can't load a file. What is going on and how do I make my phone work?
I'm trying to run Nexus Root Tookit v1.6.2 and it also still encrypted.
Is their any way to hard reset this phone? I tried fixing permissions in CM and it still won't let me wipe and do a factory reset
What do mean by "encrypted", do you mean you re-locked the bootloader ?

No known way to decrypt. If you want to decrypt you'll need to erase the user data partition in recovery. Which will wipe any user information.
If that fails you'll need to flash back to the stock using the methods in the android development.

There is a encryption option in security section, requires a pin you created to decrypt every time you power on the phone.

I can confirm ibegary's statement. When you encrypt your phone it warns you that the ONLY way to decrypt it is to wipe all data from your SD card.

How can you erase all data?
Factory reset doesn't work. It reboots, but all is still there.

Now days a lot of companies have a BYOD (Bring your own device) policy that requires users to install Google Apps Device Policy from the play store. This then enables you to get in to your company emails and what not. You have to complete a set of procedures, encrypting the device is one of them. You also need to have a decrypytion PIN that allows you to use the device. Furthermore, your companies admins can access your device remotely.
I tried it on my backup Nexus S and when I wanted to go back to stock, I had to uninstall Google Apps Device Policy first. Then I did a factory reset. Of course, you need your PIN to begin.

I came across this (just now) and discovered the only way to do a factory reset was to flash the original stock recovery and do a factory reset from there. You can flash the factory recovery using the toolkit.

I have a Nexus 4 My BYOD policy made me encrypt my phone, and I have my phone rooted running stock.
A simple factory reset worked for me.
Everything I have read said it shouldn't but it did. I am running android 4.3
Maybe an update fixed this issue.

Depends on what you are talking about if you mean while in a custom recovery then no you don't but if you are unlocking your boot loader or you are using a stock in rooted ROM and are just pressing factory reset from settings then yes you should back up

I would actually LIKE to delete everything when I install a new rom. I have used all the wipe data setting i could find in recovery and I always end up with a bunch of stuff left from the previous rom. Downloads etc.
Is there something I am missing?

Are you talking about the factory reset within Jelly Bean? If so, then that wipes everything as far as I know.

Most (all?) custom recoveries should have some type of option to format sdcard.
In CWM, the wipe data/factory reset option will *not* wipe your virtual sdcard.
You can do a wipe in recovery, and the /sdcard partition will remain intact. I was worried about this before unlocking my bootloader too
However when you unlock your bootloader *all* of your user data will be wiped from your tablet
This includes your apps, setup, homescreens, sdcard, photos. It will be like having a brand new tablet
The downloads folder is on your sdcard. You may be able to edit the updater script or something to wipe the virtual sdcard directory when you flash a rom

I did wonder why there was always stuff left over. I guess in some ways its handy. It just feels like doing an in place upgrade of windows rather than a clean install when theres old data still there.

I had 2 because one was faulty and I only got 1 gift card
Wiping your tablet will not lose your $25 though, thats stored on your google account. You ca use it with any android device hooked up to the same google account.

Sadly, there is no such thing like that. A factory reset will wipe everything on the phone and brings it back to the box condition. It takes less than 10mins to do that if you do it manually. Use a tool can be faster.
There is always Cerberus. If you flash it, remove root and relock the bootloader, it might take 15 minutes to remove it instead of 10.
I believe if you install it manually in /system, then remove root and relock, it should be permanent. Unfortunately, an app that can do a remote wipe without root needs to be registered as a device administrator, so even if the app is hidden and completely silent... settings->security->device administrators->'uncheck'... and the app is neutered.

ok, so how can i make it the hardest possible to remove it? (not interested in removing root just because of this) Just hide the app so if they try to manually unninstall everything instead of wiping it gives me a little time window to try and locate it?

Here's the deal. I want to factory reset my nexus so I can remove the unlock pin. Question is I can't seem to really get an answer. If I do the factory data reset from the menu will I lose my data from the emulated SD card. According to the picture. I will, but I looked this up and according to some website and other xda members. I won't. Since I've only had this phone for about a month now and this is the first phone that I've had with a SD slot. I honestly don't know what will happen if I hit that reset button.

Back up your storage to a computer and see what happens. They only way I've been able to erase my data was formatting in recovery or locking then unlocking the bootloader.

Yes a factory reset will wipe all user data on the phone if done from settings/backup and restore/reset device. Backup files first.
The nexus 4 doesn't have an SD card slot. You will lose all data unless you've made a backup in recovery or on your computer. And yes, it will wipe the /sdcard folder.

But you know, i have done factory resets, wiped dalvic nd cache and unlocking bootloader but evrytime i so that, the files in my internal sd card were all still there and never was deleted.
So im quite confused as well..

What recovery are you using ?
I have no issues doing.........

Mmmmm actually I am using twrp so maybe I got mistaken as I don't know how it handles on a stock recovery as it does boot into twrp briefly when I do this.
I've done this many times and never lost my sdcard files though.

I have my other gmail synced on the stock email app. Uhm I'll try to delete my accounts but as you see in the last page. The picture I posted. "No Pin" is greyed out. Its odd. Never had this happen to me.

Well I'm not sure how the system handles a factory data reset with cwm but I know for sure that using the factory data reset from phone settings does not wipe your internal "SD card" when using twrp. Now be aware I'm not referring to any wipes from recovery,its the wipe from the phone settings in backup and reset.

Okay thanks guys for all the help! I think this thread is done. I flashed TWRP recovery and I Factory Reset in there and it wiped everything that I needed. I got rid of the lock screen and I also found out that TWRP is a pretty amazing recovery. In the end I kept all my data. Just restored apps by Titanium BackUp. Thanks!:thumbup:

I did the twrp method of rooting and would like to know show to get my system back to factory. also how would I go about getting my system to a fresh state of root? would using the twrp recovery factory reset just basically reset my system back to a fresh root state? A factory reset will NOT cause you to lose root.
Using googles factory images you can do a full reset to stock including system. Its like a new device except it doesn't change the bootloader status.

I don't think Google has released factory images yet (for this model) on the developer website. They weren't there last time I checked.

Those will get you to the equivalent of or close to factory (one of them is pre-rooted), which may be all the OP wants to do.
However they aren't technically Google's factory images.
Background
- I'm using PAC 4.2.2 ever since I bought my Nexus 4 and was quite happy with the ROM until yesterday
- I started losing out the GSM signal for the past 2 weeks, it would intermittently go off and then come back by itself after a few seconds, at times few minutes (never thought it could be a ROM issue, is it?)
- Google started pushing its update and I had to manually stop data for Google Services from Settings -> Data Usage
Problem
Yesterday while updating Angry Birds from the Play Store the Play store crashed. I tried to open it but it would continue to crash as soon as it would try to load it.
I rebooted the device however since then its stuck on the google logo and doesn't proceed.
I have TWRP recovery installed and when it boots in to (Fastboot is it called?) it shows Secure Boot - enabled and Lock State - unlocked.
Few foolish things that I tried yesterday (in desperation) that might have already screwed up my phone beyond recovery....
1. Wiped Cache and Dalvik Cache and tried to reboot but it didn't work
2. Flashed the new PAC 4.2.3 version that I had downloaded way back but still no success
3. Tried to take a backup from TWRP recovery however while restoring it fails and shows the message 'Restore Failed'
I really wish to recover the media that is in the phone and contacts if possible.
I have Google Nexus 4 Toolkit (not sure of the version but its like 8-10 months old) installed in my laptop and if I connect the phone and start the toolkit it recognizes the phone against adb (shows a serial number) but when I try to back it up it stops at 'Waiting for adb mode...'
I'm a total noob when it comes to recovery etc. so would really appreciate any help that leads to data recovery in my phone somehow, thanks!
Internal memory is accessible through ADB over recovery so you could easily get your data if it is still there. About the contacts - if they are Google contacts and saved to your gmail - happy days, nothing to worry about. But if they are phone contacts I don't think you'll be able to restore them.
Do you know what is the worst thing about smart phones? That the owner should be smarter than the device in order to operate it.

What would be the steps that I'd have to follow for this? I have TWRP recovery installed.
EDIT: I even tried a complete wipe but it doesn't work. Also tried using CWM as recovery, that didn't work either. Installed the Unified_Android_ToolKit (latest version), updated all USB/adb drivers but whenever I try to backup anything through the toolkit all I get is that it is waiting for the adb mode or its waiting for the USB debugging to be enabled (which I can't since I can't get the phone to boot up).
Any ideas?
Don't try to restore any data after full wipe. It won't work. Flash factory images to get your device into operable state again but before that go to Device Manager and make sure that the phone is recognized by the computer and the drivers for it are properly installed. Good luck. Can you still access twrp recovery?

After having given up all hope to retrieve any data or contacts I wiped the entire phone, format data I mean. However, with that I've ended up with no OS on the phone, I can access TWRP though. Not sure how badly I've ended up screwing the phone. :silly:
Not badly at all... Reboot your phone into Boot loader mode. Download the Google factory images of your choice and run the flash-all.bat file. Enjoy your fully restored phone in a couple of minutes.

How exactly do I run the flash-all.bat file? I tried flashing the factory image using the Unified Toolkit however there comes an error message stating that there is some issue in the program and it has to close. This happens somewhere midway when it starts flashing system.img and recovery.img
EDIT: I can't get in to recovery mode any more and neither can I flash any recovery
EDIT2: Don't ask me what I did, somehow managed to get the phone running in the 4.2.2 version of stock factory image. 4.4 wasn't working for some reason. Setting it up for use now.
Question: Can I simply download 4.4 factory image and install it on my Nexus 4 which came with 4.2.2. when I bought it?

Even when I wasn't able to follow any of the instructions you provided (my bad though) I would like to thank you for just posting on the thread man! :good:
BTW a good news that I'd want to share is that my contacts were backed up I lost on the media but its fine I think, probably a good lesson for future.
I'm updating to 4.3 from system update as of now, will use it as it is for time being and move on to 4.4 sometime later maybe. Not sure whether 4.4 will be available for update OTA once I move to 4.3 but I'm happy with whatever's left of the phone for now...thanks again!
