Average charge time?

How long is it taking you guys to charge your N7? At first I had the sleep of death and once it finally turned on after a slight charge, it stays at charging 0% for quite some time now. But before that, it always seemed to slow charge.

No idea. I plug it in when I go to bed and it's good to go the next day...lasts me the whole day. I also don't know how many licks it takes to get to the Tootsie Roll center of a Tootsie Pop.

At I/O they said the tablet takes about 3 hours to charge from 0-100% but it may be faster. Whenever I get the 15% alert I throw it on the charger for about an hour and it's past 50%

charge times will vary depending on the charger as well, best charge time will occur from the wall charger that came with it, USB trickle charge will take a month of sundays :laugh:
that is of course unless you have a magical USB controller that outputs 2A from each port (highly unlikely)

I wonder if its something wrong with my battery. Been on charger for more than three hours and nowhere near 100%. It was at maybe 48%. Drainage seems reasonable..its just the charge seems rather long to reach full charge. This is all from using the stock charger too...

Typically 3 to 4 hours for me using OEM charger

Between 2-3 hours on charger, around 7-9 hours on usb.

My battery app says 3 hours and 40 minutes on average. That includes charge times when I am using it at the same time so I guess about 3 hours.

I don't know what happened, but with me, when I first got it it was 3 hours on the dot to a full charge. Then one day it said it needed to be plugged in to charge getting below 14%. Then I plugged it in and got the sleep of death, and plugged it in the wall and the battery icon came up, then I turned it on. Now it's been charging for about 6 hours and its only 85% :crying:

Mines generally around 40% at the end of the day, it takes less than 2 hours to get to fully charged.

Mine takes about 3.5 hours but I noticed my 10 foot micro USB cable doesn't charge fast at all. Takes about 12 hours on my 10 foot cable

Yeah I'm with the rest, mine's in the 2.5 - 3.5 range. But as stated, which charger you use makes a huge difference. Charging off the computer (USB to PC) is waaaay slow. Using the OEM wall-charger is what should give you 2.5 - 3.5.

3-4 hours for me depending on what percent I wait till, usually 5-15% battery, haven't tried with anything other than the OEM charger though.

From about 10% ie when the warning to charge came up, to 100%, took mine about 2-3 hours only last night using the supplied charger. Much longer on USB, haven't timed that.

Should I get mine exchanged ? I'm still within the 14 day policy of Mac mall. Its been an hour and its only 14%. Usually it takes 3-4+ to charge fully.

Make sure you're using the supplied charger. I believe the ones for smartphones charge at a different rate? I made the same mistake when I first got my Nexus 7 by charging it with my SGSII charger. It was VERY slow. Then I switched back to the supplied charger and everything was normal.

Usually takes me just 2 hours, and it is full. I usually start charging at around 15%. Using OEM Charger too. :good:

I used my Gnote charger but left it overnight (about 5hrs). I'd say that normally it takes around 3 hours. The battery life is awesome I have to say.

I found this while searching for an answer, my Nexus has been taking 12-15 hours to charge fully, using the factory charger. I also tried my powered USB hub (using a charging port, rated at 1.5 amp), and my Galaxy Nexus charger, same thing. Called Google today and they said it's the device, and I need to return it. Luckily I bought it locally, so I can just exchange it at the store.

Why does this charge so SLOW?

I am completely satisfied with my nexus 7 but it seems to be charging ridiculously slow. So slowly that even browsing with my screen on low, my battery still goes down while its plugged in. And a 1 hour charge with my nexus off only charges it like 20 percent or less while my samsung galaxy player charges 65 percent. I have tried 2 different USB cables and chargers.

considering theres much less voltage going through when using the usb(not wall charger) to charge, its normal for it to charge slow. and normal for it to lose battery % while charging it via usb and using the device.

Get a HP touchpad international charge kit from Amazon one of the members recommended it to me, it charges in about 2hr 45 minutes full charge faster than the official Charger. Make sure u turn off or nexus to charge the battery faster

I vouch for this. I use my Touchpad charger and it charges to full from almost 10 percent to full in less than 3 hours.

Be careful as the faster a battery charges the hotter it gets and the hotter it gets the faster it's performance and life decrease (all batteries life and charge levels will slowly decrease over time and after soo many charge cycles as parts of it very slowly kinda burn out and are unusable). Also why even fast chargers SHOULD slow down when you hit roughly 90 - 95% as it is not good to cram power that fast in to lithium ion when close to full as this causes the loss of parts of the battery more quickly. Usually it can be apps that can slow things down as well. like my boss kept complaining his phone are 3 batteries a day until a week later I convinced him to get rid of unneeded apps and low and behold it came right back. This is due to apps requesting what's called a wake lock basically telling the device to not go to sleep. This is needed to do syncs, scans and the like, but poorly written apps can juggle wake lock poorly causing bad battery usage when they don't need to.
My tablet charges in roughly 2.5 hours from dead to full using stock charger which is GREAT for a 4000 maH battery.
I also highly recommend turning the OS off and charging via charge only screen (where you see only battery graphic filling up) that would not involve any apps messing with the device while charging.
Also not good to leave device on charger longer than roughly 30 min past full as this could then have charger throttle between fast and slow charge over time (usually due to imperceptible power fluctuations tricking the circuits in the charger to reset and it takes it a sec to realize the battery charge level and adjust back) while battery is full which is very bad to have it in fast charge when it's full as stated (the charger not talking of what some folks call a fast charge mode on some devices (usually used in some way to speed up charging when using a computer USB port)) and is why even manufacturers will warn you if this sort of thing (that is if you read caution statements or manuals)

Very true depends on how hard you are running the device. Streaming movies in this mode most likely you will see a loss while simply checking news feeds or light internet browsing it still gains percentage.

Some computer motherboards also offer a high-power mode for USB ports, specifically for charging handheld devices. For instance, here's ASRock's solution.

I think it charges normally. I come from an iPad 3, which take 6.5hours hours to charge from 0 to 100%. I'm satisfied with 3.5 hours with the N7.

My Nexus 7 charges from dead to 100% in about 3 hours. That's not slow at all.

Any one know how much time n7 will take to charge 100%.
- Using power adapter
- Using system USB port.
Review stated it takes 3.30 hrs for ac charging.

dont mind though as ive been out using heavy for whole days and still got back home at midnight with 65% left luv the nexus battery

Id love to hear how some claim to have fully charged their Nexus in 2 to 3 hours, it takes me 4 hours minimum to fully charge it from around 6%, i haven't let it drop beyond that yet.

I'm not 100% sure on the time but about 1-2 hours, but then again the lowest I've ever had it is 13%. I tend to keep it plugged in if I'm going to be doing something battery intensive like play games or a lot of web browsing, and tend to turn it off over night and pick up notifications on my phone as it doesn't give off as much light from the back light as my N7.
I love the battery life on the N7 as it could probably go for at least a day and a half on battery if I left it on all the time and used flight mode over night, but I don't want to kill the battery and have to mess around inside it to change the battery.

Believe or not mr. jonny68, It's up to you.
Once again, my first 0-100 charge was 3hrs30min hrs at this moment this value is between 2.40 - 3.00
Maybe different devices have different charging times dont know, i can say im not only one, here's prove

well, dont know f it makes a difference but im on the 32gb and only got it a week ago.... but yeah 2-3 hrs and im charged, might change over a few cycles.

It depends on what ac adapter you use, and how much current it puts out. I originally used my incredible s charger and out took forever
With the Asus OEM one it takes around 3 hours from around 0-5%

This here. It is horses for courses.
As for the debate on charging times. 3-4 hours is the norm for most of us. Given different tolerances in both the charger and battery some migh be on the lower end of the scale and some higher.
Just remember to use the OEM Asus adapter as it puts out 2amp at 5v. (Or a 2a equivalent) .
Most phone chargers and USB ports on comps/Xbox etc only output 500ma (.5 amp). You can use them but it will take a good ten hours to charge with them.

nexus 7 charging awfully slowly !

My nexus 7 has been plugged in since 7 hours and still is just 70 % . using official asus wall charger rated 2.1 A . stock rom rooted device
Problem has been persisting since many days now . usually charges at this rate only ! While at 4.1 it used to be fine but now at 4.2.2 charges this slowly . please help..!

- you could have a bad battery
- you could have a bad charger
- you could have a bad cable
- you could have a variable amount of power drawn by an active device - which depends on what apps you have installed, your screen settings, kernels used etc cetera. (read : VARIABLE)
- you could be trying to charge the device via a USB port, which provides only 500mA of current - less power than the device uses in certain screen-on scenarios (esp. the 3G model)
Until you run tests which are meant to discriminate between these different scenarios, you will be just wandering around in the dark.
So try this - run the battery down through normal usage (not too far though) - say to 10%.
Then, turn the tablet off (not just the screen, I mean powered completely off).
Then charge it (on the 2A AC charger!) for about 75 minutes. Boot it up and see what the battery charge state is. Then, power it off completely again and charge it more (on the 2A AC charger!) for another 75 minutes. The first 75 minutes should bring it to somewhere around 50% charge, and the 2nd should be enough to bring it to 100% charge.
My (December '12) N7 charges from about 4% to 100% in 150 minutes (2.5 hrs) when it is on the A/C charger. That seems pretty reasonable, as 4.325 A-h / 2.5 hrs = 1.73 Amps.
By the same simple maths, a 500-mA current limit (e.g. USB hub/computer port) should take 8.7 hours to charge the N7 - even when it is completely turned off! And if you are using the device in this scenario, it might not charge at all!
This will at least tell you if there is a problem with the battery, charger, or cable. If it takes too long to charge when there's no software running, then the problem can not be software, right? (There's no software running with the device powered off.)
If it turns out that the battery/charger/cable seems OK in the above test, then the next thing to do is to determine what you have done to the stock configuration (in the way of adding apps, whatever). It's easy to say "4.2.x did this to me" or "4.1.x was so much better", but there does not seem to really be any compelling evidence coming from a majority of users that this is true.
I don't deny that people experience battery troubles; otoh, I'd wager that the root-cause of 95% of the trouble falls into two basic classes: defective hardware (incl. worn-out batteries and/or loose battery terminals), and user-caused software additions/changes.

I've had experience with 3 models that all three had power issues. Reconnecting the battery cable solved it for me, but in my case the N7 went 'dead' on me, didnt notice slow charging times. Disconnecting the battery cable for 30s then reconnecting and powering up solved the problem for me. Left me thinking their battery hardware assembly is very flawed. Or my local store has had a bad batch.

My nexus device has stock ROM (not rooted) so I hope its a charger issue. Then the issue will go away quickly by replacing the charger.

if you have a phone or other deive that has the same usb connection try that, my samsung charger charges my nexus in 3hrs :laugh:

Yeh it occurred to me today that I can use my HTC phone charger or my wife's blackberry charger and see how I get on.
Am I correct in saying that if the tablet still takes long to charge with those chargers then its an issue with the tablet?

tried out charging it up from 10 % to 50 % .. took around 3 hours !
similar observations while charging till 100% ..
It turns out that the charger may be faulty . I'll have try out other chargers. The problem is that I am here in india and made my relative bring it for me from the U.S. . I can't find any trusted chargers here . I'll try charging it with the other Sony charger I have (rated at 850 mah ) and compare the relative results . Thanks for the info anyways !

850 mA is going to charge pretty slowly also. Appearances (simple maths, A-h = Amps * hours) are that to get a 2.5-hour charge (4% to 100%) you are going to need a 2000 mA (2 A) charger.
As I said before, not accounting for losses the 4.325 A-h capacity of the battery works out to 1.73 Amps for 150 minutes. But probably due to losses the current is in fact higher - perhaps very close to the 2A limit of the US OEM A/C charger.

OK I've tried different chargers and different locations but still no luck. My n7 takes about 8 hours for a full charge and if I use it while its charging the battery still decreases. Bizarre!
I'm concluding that this is an issue with my tablet? Do u guys agree? Should my next step be to contact Google?

I have tried to find a worked solution for slow charging but no hope.

After posting that thread, no help worked! So i came to ASUS to replace the mainboard and it charged normaly again (3 hours to 100%) but no for long, now with turning-off Nexus 7, it takes me sometimes 6 hours, 7 hours, 17 hours to charge....
It happened not only on my device, but a lot of devices of tinhte.vn members.
Hardware issues? I hope I don't need to change my mainboard again...

Get a new charger at amazon....the one with the most highest reviews....now my nexus charges blazing fast....the oem one is garbage

I would agree.. charging is very slow for me thru the oem charger. Utter bull crap. Battery % decreases when I use it while charging.

I use an OEM charger - no problems.
I suppose that Asus could be multi-sourcing them from a variety of suppliers though, and that could account for different experience.
(Either that or something worse - funny business in Asus' supply chain or in the retail sales chain. There seems to no limit the amount of counterfeit electronics from the pacific rim and batteries & charger hardware seem like a likely place for that kind of activity).

[Q] Takes to charge the battery (9 hours) on my nexus 7 (2012), what's the problem?

Hello guys, I use the original charger that is the nexus 7 5v 2a and yet the battery takes around 9 hours to charge, I have another charger 5v 2a and also has this delay to load, am I in trouble with battery ? I use the original rom android 4.3.

9hrs!? Oh man. Usually it takes around 2.5 hours max for me. Did you try charging with any other charger? May be your charger's output is low?

It takes about 8 hours to charge. I use the original charger that I come to is 5V and 2A. I have another charger and 5V 2A and takes the same. The problem is not the charger I'm sure.

Is your cable the original one?, after it charges how long does the battery lasts. My charger went bad (got wet) now I use the charger of my sons nexus 7. Charges the nexus in less than 3 hours.

Yes, cable original.

I'm guessing battery then. I charge our N7 with whatever charger I see first and 3 hours tops...any rom any charger.

Honestly I don't think it's the battery. I've had this problem myself before (Not quite 9 hrs but close). For me it was either a short in my cable and a new cable will fix this problem or simply rebooting your nexus 7 might fix it. Sometimes their are processes running in the background while it's charging (such as syncing Facebook or to Google) that will burn more energy than it has coming from the charger. I'd try to restart and then see how long it takes to charge. If this doesn't help then try charging it while it's off and check on it after 3 hrs (since it's the usual full charge time). If neither of these fix the problem then try replacing the cord and if none of it works it might be your battery after all but I'd try these tips before looking into a battery replacement.
