My Nexus 7 literally takes hours to charge

My Nexus 7 battery takes forever to charge. And this is even when I use my stock cable to the wall charger. I know it takes around 3-4 hours to charge it from dead to full but for some reason mine is only HALFWAY full at the 4 hour mark and I usually have to leave it on the charger the whole night/day for it to be fully charged.
I have no other defects on this product except for this one. And I never dropped it or anything and I'm currently running 4.1.2.
Please help. I know I can't be the only one with this problem.

Definitely use the oem charger (2 Amp compared to 500-850 ma for most) and the supplied USB-3 cable. It will charge faster. After the long initial charge up to 100% mine has been charging pretty well. If I'm down around 10% it can take up to 4 hrs to charge, but the battery is huge compared to most phones. It sounds like something isn't working normally for you. Have you tried turning it off, then charging?

Yes sorry I was unclear in the original post. I'm using everything stock when I charge my Nexus 7. I don't use any other cable. And yes I completely turn it off when I'm charging but yet it still charges horribly slow.

I would test another comparable charger just to make sure it's not the charger or cable itself.

There is a lot of threads that talk about the charger and the possible ones you can & can't use (Nexus 7 is picky). I use a HP Touchpad USB plug and a cable. It does the job well :good:

I use the HP touchpad charger, Playbook charger and KFHD charger. All three of those get the job done fast.
With those three, I don't even need to use the N7 charger lol

Do you keep it on while you're charging it? If so that will definitely make it take longer to charge since it's using power.

I keep mine on, so I can check the % on screen. And long as you don't use it while it's charging, it won't take longer.

Trust me I keep everything that I charge off so that it can charge faster and not be using any power while charging. It seems no one else has gone through this from this thread though. It sucks that I have to get a new charger when the stock charger should be still working fine and perfectly.

As far as i have read the informations on / in box. It said to use the OEM charger only. I didn't really measure time when charging, but it always took maybe 2-3 hours max to charge the device completely.

Try blowing out your micro port with compressed air, had this on my galaxy2

I use a Samsung charger with the usb cord, i for a USA charger.. Mine also uses hours... Good to know IT Will charge netter with others

[Q] Slow Charge?

Had my Nexus 7 about a week now, had some system restarts at random times (when not even using the device) which is a bit of a concern, but read it could be the 4.2 update. But as hasn't happened while using so far it's not annoyed me. However charging is becoming a bit annoying. It's taking forever!
I have a battery widget installed and its stats tell the story. Battery is usually fully charge in: 6 hours 59 minutes.
It's plugged into the wall, with the cable and charger it came with, tried using an Apple charger block to see if it was that, no luck. Not tried another Micro USB cable yet, but may do if anyone thinks it could be that?
Also according to the stats it charges 1% every 7 minutes and I put it on charge at 9:45am this morning at 35% and it currently on 66% and it is now 2:55pm. It also says it will finish charging at 7:00pm tonight.
The app/widget is Battery Widget? Reborn! Does this have anything to do with the slow charging?
But this is a bit of a joke to be honest. Is my device faulty?

Mine charged from 1% to full in 2h10m today. Stock charger.

You are using the original 2A charger right? Have you tried with an other USB cable on it (might be broken?)
Also try to monitor your charging without the app, just write down what time you plugged it in at what percent and check it that way. (the app might show wrong readings).
If you have an other 2A charger you can borrow, you can try to eliminate that to. Not sure how long it takes via a regular USB port on the PC.
If it keeps charging that slow, your battery might be defect..

[Q] 3 Hours of Charging = 30% Battery

I'm unsure what's wrong!!!
My phone has been fine, until it died today. I practice a 1 charge a day rule and I let my battery drain completely before I even think about putting it back on the charger.
Today, my phone died a littler earlier than expected, but that's okay because I was using my iPhone for most of the day. I got home at about 11PM and put my phone on the charger at 11:15PM. Here it is, 2:25AM and my phone only has 30% charge.
I've never noticed it charging this slowly before because I typically put it on the charger before I go to sleep and take it off when I wake up. This doesn't seem normal from ANY phone that I've ever used or troubleshooted in my life.
Why so slow? Is everyone's phone just as slow or should I be concerned?
Edit: I am using the charger that came with my phone in the same wall outlet that I've used since I got the phone. Nothing else is plugged into that outlet, either.

It would seem sensible to try a different charger and power outlet.

Your should be at 100% in that 3 hours. Try using a tablet wall charger.

With my phone, sometimes it charges in a flash, and sometimes it's charging for hours, idk why they do this.

I don't have another charger. All I own is Apple products, unfortunately.
I've done other other outlets throughout the house before posting, but I wouldn't see why the one I'm using is compromised in the slightest. It's charged the phone fine since I've gotten it.

The only Tablet I have is my iPad. I was thinking about just using the A/C adapter, but I was worried that that might mess something up with my luck. LOL.

You can't use the iPhone\iPad chargers as most of them don't comply with the USB charging standard (It will only charge at 500ma, the limit of USB charging).
You said it died quicker than usual as well? Sure nothing is running that drains the battery? Check the battery usage in settings after leaving it unplugged a while and see if you see anything that's using a ridiculous amount of battery.

I've had the same problem. Sometimes I plug mine into a wall charger and it reads Charging (USB) which may be your problem. Other times it reads Charging (AC).

It's been off of the charger for about an an hour and a half and nothing out of the norm is draining the battery. Screen on time is at 40%, but that's because I was reading all of my sports news and stuff from my device.
Interesting thing to note: I'm at 79% on my Nexus 4 after about an hour and a half unplugged and doing regular browsing. I'm at 98% on my 4s with doing just about the same things as I've done on my Nexus 4, and even watching a YouTube video on my 4s. I've also had a great deal of voice calls and texts this morning to my iPhone. They were neck and neck when I first got my N4 on December 10th. Now, it's dying faster. The only difference is that I've installed Spotify on my Nexus 4 since then... Which isn't running.

It was reading USB last night! I thought that was normal, lmao... Thinking it meant "there is a USB cable charging it and not wireless charging."
Hm... The plot thickens, I guess.

Yeah it sometimes reads USB but if you unplug then plug it back in, it will change to AC. Not sure how to fix it but that's your problem right there.
Question: are you stock, rooted stock, or different ROM?

[SOLUTION] Slow Charging!

★★★This topic is for them who are having problems with stock charger and cable. If you don't have any problems, ignore this ★★★
Well, since I purchased my Note 2, I kept facing this slow charging problem. Now what is slow charging some of you will ask? Well, it's simple. The device is taking more than normal time for charging. Now how do you know the default/should be rate for charging? Simple again. The AC adapter clearly says output rate as 2000 mA or 2.0 A. So with that calculation Note 2's monstrous 3100 mAh should be fully charged with 2 hours. But as we've seen steady 2.0A is not the output case in some/many scenario, so add another 30 mins to it. So whatever it is, from 0-100%, the device shouldn't take more than 2 hours 30 minutes.
And for me, it was taking around 5 hours! Sometimes 4 hours 30 minutes, and if it's very fast then 4 hours. Well I was never gonna wait 4 damn hours before going to my office and irritate myself, and I don't have the habit of charging overnight, unless I absolutely need it.
So I kept calling my retailer, asked for replacement, and they did, well, you won't believe, they replaced three times actually, so I had three different Note 2, with three different charger. Well, each of them acted absolutely fine at first 3-4 charge, then the problem was back again and again. I in fact turned off the device and put it into trash once.
Then I thought let's try some different USB cables, I tried my friend's Galaxy Ace cable. Charging current kept fluctuating between 1000-1200 mA. Which was better than those faulty stock cables, which provided steady 900 mA. Sometimes it even was detecting the AC current as USB, which would provide a mere 460 mA and would take God knows how long! Then I found my piece. I went to my retailer, frustrated and angry, asked them to give me the thickest and shortest possible cable, and they provide me one from a Samsung phone's box, but I can't recall which device was that! And then I sat there for half an hour, kept plugging and unplugging, and the current rate was rock steady at 1800 mA. I took it, paid just 10$ and came back.
Since then I have charged my phone almost 10 times and the current rate never went below 1800 mA / 1.8 A.
This is the cable I am using, do notice that it has 5 pin set up against stock cable's 4 pi, if that matters in any way, and it's about 10% thicker than the stock cable and also about 9" shorter.
And how will you monitor the charging current, three ways are there,
1- Battery Monitor (yet I don't know how to exactly use it)
2- If you are rooted (which is a must anyway), then just go to, /sys/class/power_supply/battery/current_avg
3- Use the app from the link below. It basically reads the current value just exactly as above but it saves the time to go into that file every time. A big thanks to Deadvirus.

Same here, it's done within about 2 hours every time, from ~1%. Something definitely must have gone wrong with yours :s

You are amazingly right. Every charger/cable combo I test seems to deliver different currents, according to the app you posted, ranging from 600 to 1300 (mA?).
Didn't know that could happen. Now I am looking for the Holy Grail of chargers, too.
After some tests: original chargers of Note 2 and Tab provide 1800 mA; no-brand Chinese labeled 1500 gives 1400; one Nokia labeled 1200 gives 1300, another, labeled 1200, gives 1200. Puro brand, labeled 2100, gives 1100. Another Chinese, no-brand, labeled 2000, double usb, gives 1100 per socket. Other no-brand samples give 600 or 300 mA.
Enormous variability.
Think I'll use the 1800 mA Samsung for when I'm out, and the good Nokia's for overnight charging when home.

For me...
Stock charger + stock short cable (0,9 m) = ~2+ hours
Stock charger + some other cable (1,8 m) = ~4+ hours
,don't know about thicknes. Mb stock cable is thicker, or at least harder to bend.

Thanks for the APK, I found a huge variance in charging rates based on a combination of chargers and cables. Goes to show that the cable makes a huge difference. Here's my findings:
** Stock Charger (2A):
w/Stock Cable (4-pin) - 1698
w/Cable from another phone (5-pin) - 1698
w/Cable from battery pack (5-pin)- 1698
w/generic eBay cable (4-pin)- 100! - It didn't charge at all, even with screen off.
** iPhone Charger (1A):
w/Stock Cable (4-pin) - 1300
w/Cable from another phone (5-pin) - 1100
w/Cable from battery pack (5-pin) - 1300
w/generic eBay cable (4-pin) - 100!
** Car Charger (1A):
w/another generic eBay cable - 490
(Was running Redpill kernel, not sure if that has fast charging built in which might affect results).

The app is really helpful. Been wondering what the charging current was on different chargers.
I measured it using the app based on current AVG and not current NOW. This is because I used a 800ma blackberry charger and yet current now shows 1698 which is impossible.
The app will tell you which cables and chargers are good. I was shocked that out of my 8 cables only 3 gave an average of more than 1000, the rest give around 800 or less.

So, the AC adaptater mentionne 2A but it doesn't mean that your devuce consume 2A... It means that the AC adaptater can provide 2A under 5V.
If a load need to consume 500mA the adaptater can provide enough power. But if it needs more than 2A, the ouput current will be at the 2A max but your voltage will decrease (it means that you have a device problem!).
The only thing to do is to refer to the user manual of device.
One thing more, the USB protocole fix the maximun current to 1A!
An other thing, if you want to have a better battery life it recommended to charge your battery slowly. Just have the habit to charge it during the night.

I also got an lg very thick cable..which is also 5 pin and let me tell it charges REEEEAAAALLLLYYYY FAST..when seen in application posted in op(thanx) it shows 1800..but the problem is if I detach charging before battery full notification then the battery is consumed at very high rate..I.e battery life decreased or maybe shows fake battery percentage. .and if I go for full charge it takes half hour more after 100% to show battery full in notification. .

Yes, the stock charger doesn't provide full 2A current.
And is it true that if the device is charged slowly the battery backup will be better? I mean that would be good then. I'll try that, thanks for informing.

On my old cable, the damaged stock one, it'd take half an hour to reach 100% from 99. With this one it takes 5-6 mins.
This whole charging process is complicated that much I can say.

Unfortunately I got a grey import so my stock charger was for a different country.
I'm having to use a 1.0A charger instead.
It still only takes a few hours to charge though. I sleep for 4-5 hours and it's always fully charged when I wake up.

Hmm is this a accurate way of measuring amp?
I was using same cord and the apk provided above, using the default 2amp charger says 1697 and using a bellkin in charger rated at 1amp,says the same thing?

As I stated in the screenshot, you shouldn't look at current_now, it'll always be same, 1698, you should look at current_avg.

Just switched to a very old 0.7 A output charger my father uses on his primitive samsung device. It gives better results than my stock charger/USB cable, provided by samsung. 800 mA on a 700 mA charger. How is that even possible?

Yeah I am. The stock charger says 2A, 5V. When used with the stock cable it charges at a mere 200-400 mA. I used the wall charger of an old samsung phone (doesn't have a usb cable, just a wall charger) and current rises to 800mA. Where can I buy a good USB cable at in the UK?

I have buy a new stock charger because I was thinking my stock one was dead (slow charging / usb mode)...
But in fact it's not my stock charger who is defected but it's just the cable!!!
Just try with another cable and it's OK (AC mode).

Charging your Nexus 4 with an iPhone wallplug?

I've had the Nexus 4 for about 2 months now and it's really the best phone I've ever owned. But switching from an iPhone 4S, I can't help but realize how long charging takes. It's about 2 hours to a complete charge on an iPhone and almost 4 hours on a Nexus 4. I know the Nexus 4 has a battery that's a third bigger, but it shouldn't mean that it will take twice as long to charge.
I still have my iPhone wall plug lying around. Has anyone been brave enough to combine their Nexus 4 USB cable with an iPhone wall plug to see if it would charge faster? Or is there any charger that'll speed up the process (Samsung or HTC)? I haven't tried it yet I know Google and LG advise against using other chargers but I think it's worth a try especially if I need a quick charge before I go somewhere.
Side note: Previously, I did charge my iPhone using a iPad charger connected to a MacBook Pro extension. It would fully charge in about 90 minutes which was 30 minutes quick than usual and I did it often for almost a year without any problems.

Doesn't the iPhone wall charger have a rating of 1 Amp? The N4 charger has a higher rating of 1.2 Amps. Check and see.

My N4's at full charge right now but I might give it a go tonight when it's empty. If anything, I would just expect the N4 to detect it as a USB source instead of an AC source.

It'll charge. That's not an issue. I'm just thinking it won't be any faster.

I've plugged my nexus into an iphone plug every day since I got it back in December (it takes up less space). The phone is fine, however, I wouldn't have a clue is it's faster or slower to load.

How long would you say it takes you to completely charge from 10% battery?

Yeah ive noticed it takes longer to charge then an iphone but im not to fussed.

I've been charging with iPhone charger and had no dramas either.
Any electrical appliance will try draw what it needs regardless of what's powering it.
eg. It's supply and demand - you've got a tap designed to fill a 2 litre bucket of water in 4 hrs filling a 3 litre bucket.
If you want good charge times grab a 10 watt/ 2amp charger.
But there isn't a problem with what you've got if the time issue isn't a factor for you.

The N4 only pulls about 700-800mA max. So a 1A charger is more than enough. But as has been said, it won't make it charge any faster unless there is something wrong with your stock charger.

Install Elixir and charge your device with iphone charger and then stock charger. In elixir you can see at what rate your battery charges(mA). compare both and you be the judge of it.

I've always wondered, why do people get so concerned about using different wall plugs? Surely it's the phone that controls how fast it charges and how much it takes in? My family has 4 different ones (LG/Nexus, HTC, Samsung and iPad) and I've just used whichever one was free without issues. Please correct me if I'm wrong but I've just never actually worried about this and it worries me that so many people worry about it
Anyway to see which charges fastest use something like CurrentWidget which displays battery drain and charge in mA.

Actually, it might be a little slower than the LG charger.

the service manual states 950mah to 90% then uses tickle charge, i use my sony camera charger at 1.5amps since its smaller, it takes like 2.30 hours to charge,

You are right, no worries with any usb charger. I've been charging my phone (N1, NS, GN, N4, Note 2) all using my old Sony Ericsson 700mA charger without any problem. Plug in before I go to sleep, then next morning it's full. Ready for whole day usage. Have been doing that for ages.

The iDevice chargers actually cut their output when charging a non iDevice. If you plug your phone in, sometimes you'll see Charging - USB instead of Charging - AC

I use my ipad charger, no issues but obviously I can't give input on charge time.
I stayed away from the stock charger since so many people had problems with it.

What about getting a higher amp wall plug say 2.1 amp at 5 watts and using FAST CHARGE?
