Help!! Rooting and Updating DEFY+ to CM10 - Defy Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi every1.. I am a proud defy+ owner. And I had never looked into the option of custom firmware or even rooting in that case. With my warranty expired, I am now very much interested in installing CM10 on my device. Though I had read the complete guide in here in XDA, I couldn't understand few things.
1. How to find the SBF, CG & bootloader version in my mobile?
2. If iam right, i should first root my device and then update to cm10. Right?? OR am i missing some pre-requisite steps before flashing custom ROM? Should i first backup my current ROM?? If so, how should i do it??
3. Please give me the steps in short for installing CM10 in my device??
Device info. :
Model : MB526
System Version : 45.0.891.mb526.asiaretail.en.03
Android version : 2.3.4
baseband version : epu93_u_00.60.00
Kernel version : 2.6.32.9-gbdd614e [email protected] #1

Thank for the help..

This guide helped me alot when I first started tinkering with my friend's Defy.
[GUIDE] All-in-One Defy Beginner's guide
In a very non-expert way, you got to root the phone, install custom recovery, do a backup of original rom, then go into flashing.
Someone with more experience can probably help you more as I am learning still myself. My Bravo is up and running but my friend's Defy is still dead.
Good luck!

Thank you.. I had read that section.. but still not confident enough.. Somemore help would be highly appreciated..

Which carrier is the phone with?
Does it have a green lens or a red lens? Edit: I'm assuming it's a red lens.

I'm trying to find more helpful threads based on this build but I only find people saying they to unroot and keep it stock.
I don't own a Defy+ so I haven't fully venture into it and I know you need to be more careful while dealing with like (Ex. Battery fix and all.)
Edit2:
A tip to figure out which bootloader you might be running:
lazyb421 said:
If you're having trouble accessing the external sd on MIUI you probably have the gb bootloaders. One way to check is to see how you can get into recovery. If you have to hold both volume up and down keys and the power button to get there you're using froyo bl. If you can just hold volume down and power button to get there you have gb bl.

from here.
Edit3: I have yet to find a sbf for that build but you can make a backup of your rom using custom recovery. But for that you have to root your phone.
You'll have to wait for someone else to post, venture into the unknown using the search options wisely or leave it for later.
Sorry, I wished I was more help.

First thing first, >> You can not take backup of your ROM without root (Nandroid backup), because it needs Custom Recovery like CWM !!
Here you can get a complete list for SBFs.
I think you have BL7, there are plenty of Guides for rooting it. Guide
(In case it is BL6 try to search for rooting Guide, surely you will find it)
Once you have done Rooting your Defy, you need to install 2nd init for a custom recovery. Then you can take a complete backup of rom in case u messed up.
Then start flashing Custom Roms !! Also Read this First - [GUIDE] All-in-One Defy Beginner's guide

Hard unlock Sim

I have asked to my telecoms operator the unsimlock code for my Defy, it said is yet unlocked but it is not
I have flash a full sbf 2.3.6. Before it was a 2.3.4.
Motorola can't give any code.
Is there a way to show to the operator that is still locked? Or a non paid way to have the unlock code (it's free with my operator)
I know that is a way to have a soft unock but only with cm7 or miui.
But i prefer a hard unlock for motorola rom.

Indeed you could use a softunlock for CM7 or MIUI, don't know if you could for stock.
Thx for the answer. I have try this morning the softunlock with cm7 Nightly ( the only one cm7 i can install) but don't work . I think that the softunlock is only for 2.2.
Could you please try to install the nightly again and then flash the zip from my latest post on that threat?
Edit:
The zip

Also you can try to write at russian forum - motofan.ru ( i'm not able to post link there...)
Just write IMEI and your model to them, probably you'll receive unlock code.
If you won't, only way is patch.

Could do the froyo for bl6 patch it from there and re install cm7

Do you mean to follow this way below? But i'm afraid this way don't work with Defy+?
Common Problems/Questions
Black Screens when booting up: (!) Tried to install a version of Android with a lower CG Version than the one currently on the phone.
Weird behavior after installing a Fixed SBF: Install a matching Nandroid backup with your SBF, and remember to clear Cache/Dalvik Cache using Recovery.
Installed full Gingerbread SBF and can’t go back to another rom: (!) aha! We have a issue here!, latest Stock Gingerbread full SBFs comes with a Version 5 of the CG, meaning until not long ago you were pretty much screwed. But wait, there is hope! A one kind Éclair has been found in China Defys that comes with Version 5 CG!.
How to fix it:
Download this SBF and Flash it
Root your Phone
Download 2nd Init 1.4.2 and Install ClockworkMod Recovery
Download and install this Nandroid Backup
Enter Recovery, Wipe Data/Cache
After wiping, turn off your phone
Turn it on and get immediately into Bootloader mode
Flash this Fixed SBF
Delete Data/Cache again and reboot.
You WONT be able to install full SBFs of any Éclair or Froyo since these Androids have lower CG Versions.
**NOTE*: I just rephrased the original post since it can be a bit confusing, it is linked as source below.
**NOTE2**: If you are using a non-Chinese defy, DO NOT USE THE CAMERA FLASH while on the Chinese rom, it WILL kill your LED.
Source: ((Original post here))
How to Install CM7 after Installing a Full Gingerbread SBF: (!) Ok, first of all do all the steps above on "Installed full Gingerbread SBF and can’t go back to another rom"
Root your Defy (Using SuperOneClick 1.7 and not 1.9).
Install SystemRecovery from GoAPK. If you install 2nd init, you'll just get into a boot loop and have to start over.
Reboot to recovery. Do a factory wipe, then do the cache wipe.
Install CM7 .Zip and then gapps zip file. DO NOT wipe again, you'll just go back to 2.2.2 CEE (if you accidentally do this, you can pick up again from step 3).
profit!

Yes it works with Defy+ if you are on a bld6 rom (not for the bld7 roms)
My patch from a couple posts back makes a copy of the patched file on your sdcard in the folder defy_simlock_originals. Could you post them here?
Don't know if the module works with the gingerbread kernel. That's why it is a good idea to try to get CM7 with froyo kernel. It's also handy if you wan't to install other roms (WIUI ...)
But could you fist give those files? Maybe i've made a mistake again ^^.
Edit:
Sorry you don't have the right guide. That one is for bld5 downgrade.

The file is similar to the normal defy one as far as I can tell that must have done it... So prob. faullt of different kernel. You could try to downgrade and use CM7 on froyo kernel.

I have change the kernel with THIS METHOD
after, try with WIUI 2.2.17: no network; then with update-cm-7.1.0-11-Defy-signed: no network, even when changing baseband.
So, if all that i have made is right, maybe it's not fault of kernel.
Other difference between MB526 and MB525?
You get 'no network' all the time, even with the sim from the right provider, also without the patch?
I think you're the fist to try on a defy+. Maybe look to the Russian fora...
edit: And can you tell me what your Baseband version is? (in settings > about)
edit2: If it is EPU93_U_00.59.01 Try it after installing RC1.5 from here: http://www.defy-cm.net/jordan-cm7.1-RC/

no network only with wrong provider: with the patch no code ask, but no network even with other baseband.
Yes it is EPU93_U_00.59.01 (cm7.2 working on defy+ as well)
with RC1.5 no boot after files install, stuck on google logo.
Now i have flash fix sbf to use 2.3.6 rom because of no battery problems and better battery life. So i'll wait and ask again to my operator.
Now baseband is EPU_U_00.60.03
Do you think if i'm able to put a official operator rom it will see that is no desimlocked? i don't have made backup of my official rom (newbie mistake ) so i have ask here if it's possible with this method.
Blocking by TI OMAP 3630
I have read this:
Blocking the Bootloader by TI OMAP 3630
Why and how is it locked Defy?
While Linux is Open Source Motorola keeps the Defy the locked bootloader. Why?
For commercial reasons of course: avoid too many warranty returns from sorcerer's apprentices who brické their phone, for example (although care is denied you still have to manage the folders!) But also the traders (who manage some of the guaranteed returns, but not that ... we shall see below).
So Motorola maintains bootoader of our favorite phone is not locked and ready to unlock the last views of Roma making the switch to SBF rootage and even more difficult. But the fact how this lock is it made?
Unlike other phones (other brands, but also other brand models *) easy to unlock, the Defy is equipped with a TI OMAP 3630 chip that manages its technology via "M-Shield technology 'in this block. So we did not do a software problem but rather a problem if one CPU is addressing this release.
This technology also manages the simlockage phone which also explains why the operators are far from favorable to the release of Defy.
No one arrived today to crack this lock: it should have the tool from Texas Instruments where he provided to authorized repairers to put the Motorola Defy mode "SE" (Systems Engineering) for this.
* These phones using Qualcomm chips or other, do not bénéfiecient techonologie the M-Shield and are much easier to unlock.

Best bid is flashing a custom ROM.
Some apps require root access to customize and tweak. Look for that.

Don’t forget, make sure that all firewall and antivirus instruments are disabled. Allow USB debugging by choosing settings > applications > development > USB debugging. Your phone also needs to have no less than 70 % battery.
First I did this using RSDLite:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1595013
You can do it also without wiping your phone.
Then this:
www.mediafire.com/?bq3mbq6dv37g9nd
Join your Defy+ to your pc by way of USB cable.
After connecting, double click on the file referred to as defy-plus-rooten.bat and then all it’s essential to do is to observe on display screen instructions to get your phone rooted.
To test whether or not you have got successfully rooted your Defy+ are if there are two additional apps specifically, Superuser and CWM. This means that you’ve got gained root entry to your Motorola Defy Plus.

Hi,
1st of all, thank you very much for ur guidance.
one last question i would like to ask before i start rooting my phone.
After i saw "The second method doesn't work everytime" in ur reply what i understood is:
There are 2 methods to root defy+ with 2.3.6 firmware:
1st: using method specified in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1595013 with wiping
2nd: using method specified under www.mediafire.com/?bq3mbq6dv37g9nd with out wiping
is this right or i need to follow both to root the phone??
and what if i get a call or something in between rooting process!! will it get interrupted?
if yes should i keep mobile in flight mode to avoid such scenarios or do something else?
Please don't be angry as i am asking too many questions, i am just very concerned as its my 1st time and dont want to do anything wrong.
Thank you.

You might end up screwing your phone without proper info before attempting root.
Give some details about your Phone esp the build number, rooting differs with BL(that depends on your build) versions the exploits don't work with BL7

First take your sim out before doing anything, just to be safe.
In the first one your are flashing phone twice with two different files and it becomes rooted. And in the second one you start the .bat file and it does something by it self in tree processes. It's in German and that's why I don't know what it does exactly.
It's very hard to screw up your phone because Motorola locked bootloader and if it doesn't want to start just flash it again with your stock rom on this link:

got a defy, what do i need to flash custom rom?

hi people,
i have a SE x10 mini and its flashed with latest naa kernal and CM7mini.
im swapping it for a motorola defy tomorrow and just want some general answers if possible.
i see on the cm7 instructions it says *Flash froyo* then from clockwork install the .zip. ( similar to x10 mini )
but what steps do i need to take once i get the phone?
do i need to root it first then install a custom recovery first? or can i just chuck the CM7.zip on the sd card and flash?
im a little confused as i have only owned this x10 mini and i know how to flash kernals etc to this phone, just confused with the motorola
any help would be appreciated

come on, at least look at the big Q & A threads before burdening others. I saying this to you instead of answering your questin, so that you at least give the matter some attention yourselves.
May the search be with you!
lol,
i have been reading up.
im not sure on this froyo, eclair etc
how would i know what i have when i get it?
will it say froyo in settings?
with the x10mini its all pretty much easy, no need to find what version or anything, just download cm7mini flash naa and flash.
so im a little confused with the defy,
ive been reading up and understand enough,
but i take it the steps i take is
To root the phone
install the 2ins app to install recovery
then flash cm9?
or do i need to use RSD lite to flash the froyo rom first?
reading the faq is pretty straight forward but i havnt seen the phone yet ( played around with it) so im not sure of the version etc.
im in the uk
in settings it provide ur the Android version. 2.2.2 is froyo... but ... that's not the only problem. from were u buy the phone? reseller or from private

ok than ur don't had a problem with the bootloader! it's not that easy as for ur x10mini cause the locked bl in the defy.
in general section is a thread there u find 'custom' sbf files, that u can flash with rsd light. it's the easiest way to get a good ROM on the defy, in only one step. the files are all rooted and with 2nd init. from that point u easy can flash other ROM through CWM, only beware for higher bootloader. ur defy is maximum bl5 I think.

No, rsdlite cant say ur the bl version,
ur can use the tool u find in that post

First of all, what kind of defy will you get?
Defy, Defy+ or Defy Mini?
The steps to install a custom rom are very easy.
1. root your defy
2 install cwm
3. make a nandroid backup with cwm
4. download the Rom you want to install
5. reboot into cwm and install the Rom.
This is a short instruction. For details instruction go to the Defy developments threads. There you find detailed instructions, and how to install custom Roms.

It depends on which rom that you want to install and if you have green or red lense (because of the kernel).
But you will find these infos in the instructions of the rom thread.

Rooting Defy+.

Hey.
I want to root my Defy+, mainly to remove some bloatware apps and install root-required apps.
I've been trying SuperOneClick, gets stuck in #7, even after trying the solutions the developer suggested on a topic in this very forum.
Also tried OneClickRoot, the app said my phone is root-able but failed.
How can I successfully root my Defy+? I've been constanty banging my head against the wall trying to do so.
Thanks in advance.

What matters is the number set "DFP-xxx".

Here, if you use this build number to do the search, this topic might show up; http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1542956
Flashing rooted rom is the only way we have for BL7 device.

Hi.
I'm kind of a dummy about "flashing", what does it mean?
Can you explain to me or simply just point me out to a guide about how to flash rooted rom?
Thanks!

Thanks a lot!
One last thing, I dont want to flash a new version of android on my phone, I want to keep my Android version 2.3.6. Where can I downloaded a rooted rom for this version?
Those rooted roms I provide are also DFP-231, android 2.3.6 the same as your current stock rom. So no worries.
But it's baseband may differ from your region, read about and use Basebandswitcher to fix it after root.

Now my phone is all in English. I want to make it appear in Hebrew, or at least have Hebrew in typing languages. How can I add Hebrew? I dont have it in the exisiting languages list.
Nah instead of finding stock roms that contains Hebrew, I suggest using a custom rom that (likely) have one.

Since your Defy+ are rooted, install CWM from this guide and go try MS2Ginger! Hope they had it.
About keyboard, try looking for one with your language in Play Store.

[Q] Motorola Defy MB525 stock rom + simlock

Hello guys
Friend of mine gave me Motorola Defy to flash into stock rom as guy from local repair shop told him that this cannot be unlocked to all networks as long as its run Cyanogenmod and there is must to install original stock rom.
I have downloaded stock droid developers in ".sbf" extension and was researching xda in order to find out how to flash it but more I researched more I afraid become to do it.
I have found so many warnings not to downgrade that phone to Froyo, some posts saying not to flash ".sbf" at all but asked you guys for help.
Is there any safe way to reduce possibility of bricking this Motorola to the minimum?
Could someone advise me what should i do in this case? Should I give up flashing?
Helpful informations:
MB525 - on the label under the battery
MB526 - detected by system CM11-20140731-NIGHTLY-mb526
Recovery - TWRP
Thank You in advance for any help provided.
Regards

Hi, you can try this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=50699347&postcount=511 to unsimlock while staying on cm11, but no idea if it will really work.
I have flashed my defy many times without any problems, i have used a sbf from this list http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=966537 and kept it as reference in order not to use a downgraded sbf.
Just make sure the defy is fully charged, rsd lite + motodrivers are installed .

Flashing with RSD Lite didn't want to work as program didn't want to discover my phone, found another solution which is here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=775913
Simple and works 100% even when my phone didn't turn on because wrong sbf, I could flash as many as I wanted to get the working one, which was mb526 2.3.6 version surprisingly
...
But now I need to get this devices rooted and all xda tutorials are about reflashing rooted sbf and installing twrp after that. Could someone advise me how to recognize rooted sbf which will be compatible with mb525??
I have tried framaroot to avoid flashing again but it didn't work unfortunately.

Pre-rooted rom must have "rooted" in their name, framaroot works for me.
