So what's the best way to clean the screen on this beast? I looked on the online manual and the little booklet that came with the tablet... and on Google's Support section and there wasn't anything about screen care.
I tried a soft felt cloth... but that just smudged the fingerprints around. I wanna get it so it's shiny clean... like when you first bought it.
Ideas?
Thanks!
I just use a generic micro fiber cloth (same one I use for my glasses) and it works great

Same here, I just use the one that came with my old TF700, works pretty good.
Also using an old Infinity cleaning cloth.
Dip it in soap
Get some RoR residule oil remover it was probably used to clean the screen when you got it. Ror.net use it to clean everything camera lenses glasses displays. You might want some optic wipes too like tissue paper they carry those to that would be the factory recommended.
General cleaning, I just use a microfiber cloth. Other times I might just spray a bit of 90% Alcohol on the screen and then wipe it down with the microfiber cloth.
Do yourself a favor and go to Target. There, they sell a brand of microfiber cloths named "Toddy". They're kind two sided (a cleaning side and a polishing side) and kind of expensive (1 for $10 or 3 for $20), but they are seriously one of the best accessory investments I have ever made. The side that is used for cleaning is so ridiculously good that a moist lens wipe is hard pressed to do a better job (no joke).
Now caution: you'll need to look through ALL the designs they have available, as a lot of them are quite feminine (if you're a girl then this is no problem lol). I ended up with a sort of wavy blue one, but that's fine; if anybody ever questions me about it I just demonstrate the kind of job it does and they immediately understand lol.

Monster Screen Cleaner with a micro fiber cloth.
Sweet! Thanks everyone for your suggestions!! Keep them coming, if anyone else has any other suggestions.
I use this....

I have had many microfiber cloths, but this one is amazing and one swipe and it cleans off anything like new.

I spray a little Klear Screen on micro fiber cloth and finish off with a polishing cloth.
FWIW, I wash all of mine in the washing machine on gentle cycle, air dry and never use laundry soap. I use white vinegar. No laundry soap residue /build-up and no vinegar smell after they are dried. Also acts as a water softener. We women know these things.
My first defense is using a stylus most of the time. That minimizes the frequency I need to clean the screen. When I do clean it, I use these ($8 for 200 at Sam's Club):

i know this thread should probably be under the general device section, but i'm not sure if the hermes has a special screen or not (h200/cingular8525)
i was out looking at a house to rent, noticed their mailbox got smashed so i picked it up-- in the process i scratched the hell out of my screen (it causes my fingernail to jump when i run it over the scratch, but its not deep enough to effect using the stylus under it)
i don't have any type of protection plan AFAIK (though its a retail purchased NEW 8525 from a corp store if that makes a difference)
so, basically i'm wondering if there are any types of scratch hiding methods that are proven to work well for the screen? i'm thinking CD refinishing items might help (mentioned on a few threads when i searched).. should i find a dremel and some high speed cloth polishing wheels to eat away the ridges around the scratch?
edit:
this seems to be just a surface scratch in the screen coating, if i use the stylus over the scratch it still draws correctly in pencilbox.
r u using softcase or something ?
I use Krussel leather case and it work.
anyway just minor scartch is fine as long as u now broken ur LCD.
For minor scratches Brass cleaning cloth or liquid works well but be careful not to overdo it. In the UK the brand name Brasso is ok. Essentially these products contain micro particles impregnated into a cloth or liquid. Never pour liquid onto the screen but use a little on a cloth.
Very much a use at your own risk solution!

Whats the best way to clean the hd2 screen? Is spraying a bit of window cleaner safe?
I use my forearm, it's nice and hairy and makes it look brand new
A clean dry cloth does the job, no need to use product and I would avoid water anyways... Just rub it with a clean dry cloth and watch the screen shine like the day you unboxed it
I wouldn't spray anything on the screen; I use a "Spontex" microfibre glass cleaning cloth. It's very soft and buffs up the screen in seconds leaving no fibres behind. They cost about three quid in tescos and also do my specs!
I use the inside of my t-shirt lol... or if its a bit greasy from the side of my face I'll breathe on the screen first to give it a tiny bit of moisture and then use the inside of my t-shirt... works very well
I rub it on my trousers, shirt, jumper, t-shirt, boxers... whatever's easiest at the time. I do have a glasses cleaner at my computer desk and tend to use that when I'm sat there. That gets great results.
Plus 1 for the micro fibre cloths. Absolutely amazing results, albeit they feel a bit strange in your hands (the micro fibre cloths, that is).

Never use liquids to clean the screen as it may intrude around the edge (a strong breath is best)
The screen on the HD2 is very duarble so the inside of a Tshirt is excellent and very handy if you are dressed (always make sure there is no grit/sand)
and never to be using scrotum, because to catch hair can be very painfull and maybe also hygene problems

I dont own a hd2 but i carry a micro fibre cloth that came with my plasma tv i hace the nexus one
Another vote for micro-fibre cloths. I usually use the one I got from Specsavers to clean my glasses with. The advantage of this over clothing is not just that it's softer (and thus guaranteed not to scratch) but that it is far better at absorbing grease, which means the screen ends up completely free from finger-prints. Using your shirt tends to spread the grease around rather than removing it.
I use the screen cleaning cloth that came with my laptop (Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Xi 3650).
It is amazing and fast, I clean the screen in 4-5 seconds and it looks new and shiny
P.S. Do not use any cleaning products or water, just a dry cloth.
hey guys after cleaning my screen with a watery sheet for glasses and not the for the first time - I got a strange problem:
my fingers don´t slide smooth anymore on the screen, it feels like they are braking and slowed down because of this dry screen.also doing multitouch zooming one handed is a problem now!
would be gratefull for any tips!

The effect will wear off after you use the phone for a little while, it's probably the substance is creating a dry effect lool. And I recommend micro-fibre cleaning cloths, your shiny HD2 will catch everyone's eye in the market!
Oh wait, don't get mugged though Spraying some window cleaning liquid might go into the device through the gaps at the side or through the hardware buttons, causing unwanted problems. Good luck cleaning xD
1. get a shirt
2. rub your HD2 on it
3. ????
4. profit!
after i got my hd2 i used a screen protector to avoid scratches and i clean it so easy just rubbing it in my shirt and thats it, but guys how to clean the edges and the speaker and buttons parts ?
all this method of cleaning the screen is with consideration that u guys have a screen protector on right?
other then the microfiber method, all other method is scratch inducing and sooner or later a scratch will appear on the screen..

I was just curious how you guys keep your nexus clean, How you keep the screen and trackball looking like new. I just use a damp washcloth on the screen and for the trackball... well i haven't really cleaned the trackball much (probably something i need to start doing before it starts to stick)
Thanks
For the screen I use the typical cloth used for glasses. I haven't cleaned my trackball and it's pretty good looking. I'm a heavy trackball user.
put it inside the washer machine a quarter water full, add a teaspoon of detergent, 2 teaspoons of alcohol, and give it a two minutes cycle. Important, don't forget to seat it up on AIRPLANE MODE or it may get bricked. Do this once or twice a month.
Same way I do for all my electronics:
Mixture of 98% isopropyl alcohol and water in a small sprayer. Mist and then wipe with a microfiber cloth. Of course you don't want to soak it, and try to avoid openings. But the good thing is that the alcohol not only evaporates fast it disinfects!
Quick wipe on the sleeve of what I'm wearing usually suffices, but I give it a going over with an optical wipe once in a while too.
i steam mine with the vegetables every dinner.
Powerwasher.
I have one powered by a 6.5 Honda engine. I have to use the wimpy nozzle though, because the more powerful ones push soggy dust under the digitizer.

That's a myth, actually. Alcohol doesn't disinfect terribly well at all. If you want to disinfect, bleach will do a far better job. However, bleach won't flash off surfaces like alcohol will.

Alcohols, usually ethanol or isopropanol, are sometimes used as a disinfectant, but more often as an antiseptic (the distinction being that alcohol tends to be used on living tissue rather than nonliving surfaces). They are non-corrosive, but can be a fire hazard. They also have limited residual activity due to evaporation, which results in brief contact times unless the surface is submerged, and have a limited activity in the presence of organic material. Alcohols are most effective when combined with purified water to facilitate diffusion through the cell membrane; 100% alcohol typically denatures only external membrane proteins. A mixture of 70% ethanol or isopropanol diluted in water is effective against a wide spectrum of bacteria, though higher concentrations are often needed to disinfect wet surfaces. Additionally, high-concentration mixtures (such as 80% ethanol + 5% isopropanol) are required to effectively inactivate lipid-enveloped viruses (such as HIV, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C).Alcohol is, at best, only partly effective against most non-enveloped viruses (such as hepatitis A), and is not effective against fungal and bacterial spores.

I work in a biological lab and 70% alcohol is good enough to clean the benches.
OT: I use a moist cloth to wipe the phone and occasionally I use 70% isopropanol wipes.

I'll go along with that.
Just sayin' - alcohol in the form it is commonly used for as a disinfectant is not as effective as people think it is. As your link pointed out, viruses tend to be harder to deal with than bateria. I saw a nit so I picked.
Hey, if it's your phone, why not use spit if it works?

I was constantly wiping the screen with a micro-fiber cloth (which works very well). However, I just applied a screen protector to my N1 (by Skinomi). I have to say, that the screen protector is much more resistant to smudges. The touch screen response is still the same. I highly recommend it.
my jeans would do the cleaning....
anyone want to try to polish the nexus one ?.. make a video guide please
welcome to XDA...you try it first!
Polish what? It's plastic, not metal.
Except for the metal frame, you mean..?
he doesn't even know he has a Aluminium frame phone And is probably one of those who defend Al against plastic.. hehe kidding yeah I troll
I will seriously think about doing this. I just paid for one that looks really beat up.
I think it will involve stripping everything out of the metal frame, wetsanding until it's smooth, then polishing.

wetsanding cast aluminum??... no way, don't even try that unless you want to really mess it up... you're gonna need a buffer (Harbor Freight, bench-mount model about $60) a couple of very soft cotton/flannel buffing disks and some red/green/brown jeweler's rouge... it will come out perfect...
wetsanding with up to 3000 grit paper is good for clear plastic and painted surfaces (like clearcoat) to remove imperfections like 'orange peel' or to remove yellowing and scratches from headlight lenses... wetsanding will destroy aluminum unless you know exactly what you're doing, and you'll end up polishing out your sand scratches with compound anyway, and it still won't come out right... you need something with a higher grit than 3000 (which is usually the highest grit paper they sell at a store) and that is jeweler's rouge... trust me on this one...
What's your experience with polishing aluminum?
I just wonder, because lots of people on the car forum I'm on have wet-sanded aluminum to polish what were previously painted wheels.
I don't think you can go straight to polish on the N1 because the finish is textured. Also, the photos of the phone I bought look like the thing has deep scratches and concrete rash which will need to be smoothed significantly and sanding is the only way I can think of to fix that.
The phone is really beat looking, so if I mess it up or it doesn't look good, I'll just replace the housing. I had already factored the cost of a new housing into the price I offered and paid anyway.
I have 2 n-1's... one of them in pieces, and I too, was seriously thinking ofdoing this for the luls. basically, sand off paint, then clearcoat it, since aluminum does oxidize.
I would remove everything first...

Cast aluminum sands then polishes just fine. I'd use 1000 ish to remove the paint , then 2000-3000 until it hazes. After that some rubbing compound , glaze, swirl mark remover and she'll look like a mirror. Zoop seal it and you're done.

I have lots of experience polishing different types of metals, plastics, you name it... while the methods you and others are describing, 'could' work out for you (or someone who hasn't actually done this before, as I'm assuming you haven't), the method I told you will get you the best results in the shortest amount of time, with the least amount of effort... I've been through this a lot... restored cars, jewelry, internal lock pieces from old church doors, weapons, etc, etc... $60 for a decent buffer, $10 for some buffing discs, and $10 for some jeweler's rouge, about 20 minutes, and you're set... once you get the hang of it, you can polish that glass up too... jeweler's rouge works wonders... if you take your time and are careful to buff with the texture of the grain and at the right speed and pressure, you'll maintain the textured surface on the N1 as well... good luck to you, however you end up deciding to tackle it...
Seriously, why sand when you can just use a strong paint remover?
Because it's anodized and not painted?
Most paint removers won't strip anodizing, are expensive, won't reduce scratches and scuffs, won't smooth the texture, and most importantly, I already have 3000-grit sandpaper.
I just got my beat up N1 on Saturday. It's really rough and should be a good candidate for experimentation. I'm currently using it, so experimentation will wait until the parts I ordered to repair my other N1 arrive.
This thread is a fail.
Sanding the phone down gently will not cause any damage to it. As long as you don't sand it down past the metal there will be no problem. The hard part isn't sanding, it's putting on a new surface.
I have sanded down an Xperia X1 before (black and silver model) and re-finished it. I did this because there were scratches on the body that were annoying me. It was very simple and held up very nicely.

Hey,
There are a few different applications made by Plasti Dip. The spray that you are talking about would indeed be too thick for the styling of our phones. They have a paint on version and another spray version that can be controller more when applying so that you get the perfect amount.
There are also 3rd-party companies that sell the same style of products with different application types at your local hardware store.

Hey guys,
So I've had the Nexus 4 for around two weeks now and it's too well designed of a device for me to resort to using screen protectors although I will be getting a thin case soon since it is quite slippery. I was just wondering what some of you do in order to maintain the condition of the device. I've simply been using a dry microfiber cloth - usually used on my eyeglasses - and rubbing gently until all the smudges are gone. This keeps it quite clean for 3-4 days but I don't know if that period will shorten with prolonged use. Any and all tips are appreciated, thanks in advance!
I just usually rub it on my shirt. Takes the smudges off in one wipe

After I wash/dry my hands I use the edge of my palm, the coating is great so I don't even have to do that that often.
Sounds like a pack of microfiber cloths should do just fine for the future then! Thanks guys, still welcoming other suggestions

Not fair
He guys im new and i had a question about keeping my nexus 4 clean. So when i recieved my nexus 4 i had it naked without a screen protector or case, then i decided to buy a full body xtremeguard screen protector, which was 6 dollars. They arrived and i tried putting them on the next day. They were wet installation which i didnt really like. I had to use a bowl of handsoap and water. So I installed them and tried to accelerate the drying process a little by using a blow dryer, but guess what, it really made the beautiful screen look all ugly and disoriented so i took them off and decided to keep it the way. and applied a little more water to the glass to get all the soapy residue off and dried it off a little more. The next day I noticed that when i held it in sunlight I noticed this white stuff inside the crevices in between the glass and the edges of the phone. SO whats bothering me is that i think its dried soap in there and blow drying it only made it worse. But wheat really gets me ticked off is that i wanted to keep my phone perfect and clean but that stuff is still in there and i dont know how to get it out. Its just killing me. Ive tried water, q tips, even scraping it out with printer paper but no luck. Can anyone give me ideas or help plz?? thx. IM sorry if this a very long post
Should have left the XtremeGuard on there, it takes a few days for them to dry properly and until they do, they look like a disaster.
As for the left overs, maybe a fingernail will be able to scrape it out?

Compressed air, but be careful not to blow it to closely.
As far as cleaning the screen itself, I use monster LCD/plasma TV cleaner I got at best buy. Its a little pricy but I've had it for 3 years and works wonders on all my phones, even on screen protectors.
I do not have any advice as far as what to do what the residue in the screen your talking about.
I have a screen protector on the screen and have been thinking about removing it lately. I had a convo with my neighbor who never uses a protector on his phones. He never has gotten a huge scratch on gorilla glass, and to be honest I rarely ever change my protector and prob sacrifice more clear screen using one vs not...
