You do have a custom recovery, don't you?
It seems like you are trying to flash from stock recovery.
You need a custom recovery (Clockworkmod or TWR) to install ROMs.
You can get it by using the 2ndinit app. (Read the all-in-one defy beginners guide.)
Don't forget to click the Thanks button if this helped you.

Hi,
I am trying to install CM7.1 on my Defy+ following this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1065798 > step 2
I have done everything, and when in ClockwordMod Recovery, when clicking wipe data, it says data wipe complete, followed by:
"E:Can't open /tmp/recovery.log"
And then when I try and install the zip from S card, it errors with:
Installation update...
E: Can't make /tmp/update_binary
Installation aboard.
I am trying to install the latest stable CM7.1 mod (update-cm-7.1.0-jordan-signed.zip ) and android version prior is 2.3.4 and kernel 2.6.32.9-g18e961
I installed 2ndinit as per step 10 of the above xda link.
Any help/advice would be most appreciated.
Thanks
Rob
you have to install a defy+ version of cm7 (not one for defy without the +)
here u get it: http://www.defy-cm.net/defy_plus-cm7-nightly/
EDIT: just read, that your version should work with both: defy and defy+... so i don't know, why your installation failed.
If you are using 2.3 kernel, you can install a cm7.2 nightly with defy+ letter, no need flash full SBF.
I now have 2.3.6 working, and rooted... now trying CM7 now, fingers crossed.
thanks
Just an update on this... 2.3.6 and rooted caused exactly the same problems in the /tmp/update_binary issue.
But then I have another issue using 2ndinit 'latest' version, as per this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=21307184#post21307184
Thanks

Clockworkmod works for all custom roms. General step is
Assuming you have Defy and NOT DEFY plus.
1. Flash froyo sbf (can omit if on stock rom)
2. Copy *.zip to sdcard
3. Reboot your device in BootMenu/ClockWork
4. WIPE (wipe data/factory reset + wipe cache partition)
5. Install the *zip
6. Wipe dalvik (in 'advance')
7. reboot
But you will have to read instructions for each rom, some may require certain changes. Like CM9 / CM10 require you to flash a kernel along with the rom zip.
thank you....
exactly I want to use cm9 and cm10 ...
how to flash kernels on my defy ?
and does this way work on defy and defy mini ?
I have searched for answers but I can't find them.
How do you install clockworkmod on Defy? I can't find it in Google Play.
I've installed ROM Manager. Inside ROM Manager it is an option to install ClockworkMod Recovery but when I try it says: "Motorola Defy does not have an officially supported ClockworkMod Recovery yet. Have you installed a ClockworkMod based recovery manually?"
Of course I don't have. I can't find it.
I also tried to find Defy 2nd init in Google Play but it's not there.
How to do?

You cant , you can flash cyanogenmod 7 and will give you clockworkmod with it , what you can do is make sure your phone is rooted !!
- download 2init here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1032212
- PS download 1.4.2
- install as normal apk
- then just install it and reboot twice
- you now have custom recovery
you can install cm7 from there
heres how http://www.techofweb.com/technology/installing-cm7-motorola-defy.html

I'll try it. Thanks!
It didn't work. When I restart into recovery I get an droid with an exclamation mark.
Thats not the 2ndinit recovery.
To go in the 2ndinit recovery you need to boot up and when the led lights up blue during the boot process push the volume rocker down.
To install CM7 you also need gapps(but thats said in the tutorial).
And there are also newer versions of CM7.

I managed to make a backup. BUT! Where is it now? I can't find anything looking like a backup at my SD-card.
*bump*
How can I be sure that my backup really exists?
No one knows?
Go to file manage. Go to SD card->clockworkmod->backup. You'll find your backup there

Hello,
I own a defy mb525 with CM7.2.0. I am not so happy with this version (bad 3g access; battery life very short)
So I decided to install the CM10.1.
On the develloper page I saw that the status has been updated on the 26.03. But if I look for my model (mb525), I can find only a version dated on the 120904.
Is there a newer version for the mb525 or is it only for the mb520 and mb526 ?
Regards

It should work for both. Same as latest builds of CM10.

First of all, none of you guys ever read the stickies. It is packed with good info.
Our phone has a locked bootloader, it is almost impossible to brick.
Download latest CM10 and then install.
Ive come across a newbi problem im on the link of the latest cm10 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1768702) and the file I try to flash wont install it gets aborted, I searched the forms for other cm10 and same issue file gets aborted.
If possible to be directed to the file I need to flash to cm10

out of curiousity, i restored my mb525 back to cm7 nightly 20111201 nandroid, which has cwm v5.0.3.2. i did not check the bootmenu version but it should be the same as yours. then, after formatting system/cache partitions, i flashed cm-10-20130918-nightly-mb526.zip, and it worked.
so i don't really know what's wrong with your phone, but i have a couple of suggestions for you to try. not that there's any logical explanations but try it anyway:
1. according to the error messages, you have the cm10 rom in the root folder of the sdcard. try creating a sub-folder called cm10 and copy the cm10 rom and the minimal gapps into it.
2. download the defy_fullwipe_ext4.zip and defy_fullwipe_ext3.zip ( for later use, when you want to revert back your rom) from here and put them in cm10 folder as well:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1818520
3. reboot into recovery but don't do any format or wipe. instead flash the file defy_fullwipe_ext4.zip and this will format your partitions into the ext4 file system.
4. then flash the cm10 rom. if it installs sucessfully, then without any further wiping, nor flashing the minimal gapps, reboot the phone. (note that the os will reboot once more in the middle of booting up, seemingly having a bootloop problem. don't worry it's meant to do that, unless it rebooted more than once)
5. if it boots up sucessfully, do some basic set up first before rebooting back into recovery to flash the minimal gapps.
alternatively you could try flashing cm9.1 (ext3) to get a newer bootmenu and cwm versions before flashing cm10. no need to flash any gapps, just wipe system/cache partitions and flash the cm9.1 rom by itself. reboot into cm9.1, do basic set up. once it's ready reboot into recovery and do the above steps, starting from step 3, to flash cm10.
good luck.....
edit: did you get your cm10 rom from here:

I did try using that link but the files still would abort when flashing, also tried http://d-h.st/users/Quarx files it did the same thing
I followed your instruction but decided to goto cm 9 first I flashed the (ext3) file it installed and cm9.1 installed also installed twrp with no issues but when I was going through cm9 and its functions I couldent go on line a popup message (Unfortunately, brower has stopped) also I wasn't able to log on google play a pop up message (Unfortunately, com. google android.gb has stopped). so I got fed up and decided to goto cm10.1 so I first flashed with ext4.zip it installed and then tried to flash 10.1 file once again the file wouldn't install it gave me aborted file message again. I had no choice to reboot and I had to reinstall the factory file(brick). I am now back to where I started :silly: cm7 2.3.7 its been a hell of a weekend ........... ill give it another shot soon :fingers-crossed:

What I'm not sure about is whether I can safely install multiboot with this version of CWM bootmenu, as I don't see "latest" or "stable recovery". Some posts say multiboot will add these options, others say update CWM first before flashing multiboot's zip.
Any helpful suggestions?

Well, I used this multiboot.
The answer is YES, it works fine, Just Need Flash on CWM the last multiboot ZIP file.
Stock is Motorola factory recovery. latest or stable means too Custom. This is because before you can get CWM o TWRP as CustomRecovery on your DEFY. Actually you can get Both.

Install as you instal a Rom in CWM recovery.
