Clockworkmod works for all custom roms. General step is
Assuming you have Defy and NOT DEFY plus.
1. Flash froyo sbf (can omit if on stock rom)
2. Copy *.zip to sdcard
3. Reboot your device in BootMenu/ClockWork
4. WIPE (wipe data/factory reset + wipe cache partition)
5. Install the *zip
6. Wipe dalvik (in 'advance')
7. reboot
But you will have to read instructions for each rom, some may require certain changes. Like CM9 / CM10 require you to flash a kernel along with the rom zip.

thank you....
exactly I want to use cm9 and cm10 ...
how to flash kernels on my defy ?
and does this way work on defy and defy mini ?

I have searched for answers but I can't find them.
How do you install clockworkmod on Defy? I can't find it in Google Play.
I've installed ROM Manager. Inside ROM Manager it is an option to install ClockworkMod Recovery but when I try it says: "Motorola Defy does not have an officially supported ClockworkMod Recovery yet. Have you installed a ClockworkMod based recovery manually?"
Of course I don't have. I can't find it.
I also tried to find Defy 2nd init in Google Play but it's not there.
How to do?

You cant , you can flash cyanogenmod 7 and will give you clockworkmod with it , what you can do is make sure your phone is rooted !!
- download 2init here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1032212
- PS download 1.4.2
- install as normal apk
- then just install it and reboot twice
- you now have custom recovery
you can install cm7 from there
heres how http://www.techofweb.com/technology/installing-cm7-motorola-defy.html

I'll try it. Thanks!

It didn't work. When I restart into recovery I get an droid with an exclamation mark.

Thats not the 2ndinit recovery.
To go in the 2ndinit recovery you need to boot up and when the led lights up blue during the boot process push the volume rocker down.
To install CM7 you also need gapps(but thats said in the tutorial).
And there are also newer versions of CM7.

I managed to make a backup. BUT! Where is it now? I can't find anything looking like a backup at my SD-card.

*bump*
How can I be sure that my backup really exists?

No one knows?

Go to file manage. Go to SD card->clockworkmod->backup. You'll find your backup there

Not gonna lie, this is my first rom install lol. I have v1.9 installed and have used titanium for my backup. I follow the instructions it says on the app and install the stable bootmenu. So, then I disabled USB debugging and rebooted (once blue LED came on) into the bootmenu. However, I'm stuck after that. Any help would be much appreciated.
rdannar's instructions below:
"1. DO NOT LEAVE RECOVERY MENU UNTIL YOU ARE COMPLETELY DONE WITH INSTALL (how do I know when I am completely done?)
2. download and place on sdcard (downloaded MUTT_rdannarV1, but when do I place on sdcard? unzipped/zipped?)
3. reboot into recovery menu
4. format data in recovery (what does this mean?)
5. wipe Dalvik in advanced menu of recovery
6. wipe Cache in recovery
7. choose install zip and click to install ROM
8. reboot and give it some time for first boot
9. IF ANY PROBLEMS with getting bootloader error then use the SBF called rdannarFIX in downloads and install like regular SBF"
Thank you
EDIT: Never mind, I figured it out. Experimentation is sometimes all you need hah. Thanks rdannar and all others for continued work and support.

Monzer, when you install bootmenu are you installing the .apk and then opening the app and then clicking to install 2nd init? This is the right procedure! after you do this reboot your phone and watch for blue led to flash during boot, hit volume down once it flashes blue.
What 2nd init version are you installing? here is the latest http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=792601&d=1322064151
Are you trying to flash CM7?
There is a very old version of CWM that should be suitable if all else fails you. It should work just fine to flash CM7 but not so sure about CM9. However if you want to flash CM9 You could use this old version of CWM to flash CM7 which will in turn install a new version of 2nd init which is definitely suitable for flashing CM9. This old CWM "might" work for flashing CM9 but I dunno if I would try or not! Download in my attachment below!
You MUST enable USB debugging to install.
copy the apk to your sdcard and use a file manager to install it then open the app in your app drawer and choose to install the custom recovery (with USB dubugging ON)
THIS STEP IS VERY IMPORTANT!!!
AFTER INSTALLING THE CUSTOM RECOVERY DISABLE USB DEBUGGING.
You enter CWM by again opening the app and choosing reboot to recovery (with USB debuggind OFF)

[Q] [q] motorola defy plus 2.3.6

works on my 2.3. 6 defy+
I am currently using the latest CM7.2-Nightly for Defy+ with the camera and battery fix attached in that post. It is very, very stable and with the fix, the battery charges up to 100%.
Installation:
!!!Read all steps before you do them!!!
1. Copy the three files linked above and the CM7-Google-Apps to your SD-Card.
2. Root your defy. I used this method.
3. Install 2nd-init recovery:
3.1 Download the app SndInitDefy from here
3.2 Install and start the app. Press on "Install 2nd-init Recovery".
3.3 Choose "Latest Recovery"
3.4 Allow the superuser-request
4. If the LED is green now, you can reboot your Defy. Press Vol-Down when you see the blue LED
5. Now you should get into the bootmenu. You can navigate with the volume keys there. Choose "Recovery" and press the power button to select.
6. Now choose "Custom Recovery"
7. Choose "install zip from sdcard" and install the downloaded zips:
7.1 Install cm72-120127.0846-NIGHTLY-Defy+.zip
7.2 Install gapps-gb-20110828-signed.zip
7.3 Install the fixes (the two other zips)
8. Now you have to do a factory reset. After that all your apps and settings will be deleted. If you want to keep them, you must backup the apps/settings first. You could do that with the app TitaniumBackup.
9. Choose "wipe data/factory reset" to do this factory reset.
10. Reboot the defy now. If you stil see the boot animation after five minutes, reboot the defy (I think you must remove the battery and put them into the phone again).
Now you should have a defy with CyanogenMod 7!
possible, in posibble?
188 2.3.6 motorola defy+ their full SBF will not work the root of the superoneclickk 2.3.3 not possible
WARNING!!!
The below guide is useless! It instructs you to download 2ndinit 2.0 which DOES NOT BOOT on Defy+ I have thus far killed 2 phones using it!!! Only use 1.4.2 no later. Thanks! =)

That's strange...
For me it works well, i installed CWM sucessfully on both 2.3.4 and 2.3.6 devices. I was using the original firmware (from factory) for the 2.3.4 device and at the second device i flashed a 2.3.6 DFP-139 sbf form droid-developers.org. After installing the latest recovery and removing the "2nd-init Defy" app, I rebooted the phones and everything worked fine.
When you start the phone, do you see the blue led then? If not, you don't have installed 2nd-init correctly. If yes, try to 'wipe data/factory reset' the phone (you should have a backup, this erases all your user data which is not stored on the sd card and all your apps). If the phone is still not booting, you/the 2nd-init installer have/has made a wrong change to the system partition.
Then you should try to flash a new 2.3.4 SBF (look here and also here) and try it one more time.

afaik you absolutely have to dual boot a defy/defy+...because of the locked bootloader you cant remove the stock rom...
follow the above instructions carefully and you will have a cm7.2...then you can dual boot by selecting the preferred entry from the menu....

Bro even I have done this n times! In fact I had stock 2.3.4 which I upgraded to 2.3.6 by a full SBF flash and since then I have rooted using superoneclick and installed recovery many times and it works perfectly! The only issue however is that there are less frequent releases for 2.3.6 as compared to the Froyo kernel!

Hi,
Good to know new Defy+ are coming in India with latest updates! I too have the very same SBF in my phone. As you said rooting and all not a problem. No need to flash any specific SBF as such. A nandroid backup is recommended in case you want to come back to where you left before flashing! And if you want back warranty just flash the SBF with RSD lite(Walter's thread has the SBF and even I can give you the link if you want.).
For your second answer:
This SBF has BL6. So you cannot go back to any ROM or sbf which has a previous version. Thus, walter said about unability to flash MIUI or CM7. However, you can flash CM7.2 for Defy+ or CM9 for Defy+(By quarx). Just flash the CM. No need to flash any kernel. It worked fine for me. You can even try dual boot and that too works great.
Happy flashing!
thnx a tonne....I was wanting cm7 fr its completeness....n cm9 fr awesomeness.....thnx again....
Also....can u give a link to the best cm7.2 build fr us....?

Bro, dont speak from ignorance, especially when it can lead to others ending up in a bad place. The latest versions of 2.3.6 eg 4.5.1-134-DFP-188 can not be rooted by any currently known exploit, so you have to be careful when choosing an sbf to flash. See here for which versions can and can't be rooted.
There's even a whole thread all of its own where people are trying to root the latest 2.3.6 releases, here.

http://quarx2k.ru/cm7-nightly-defy+/ That is CM7 nightlies for Defy+ by Quarx!!
Followed the steps listed by Mister Ypsilon, on to my new Defy+ which used to run Motorola Stock with Motoblur. So far looks good. I will post further regarding the battery.
The only glitch that I faced after installing the ROM is that it always froze at the Boot Animation. I had to pull the battery almost 5-6 times and then magically it started to work. Boots within 10 second from the Motorola Logo.
Not sure if the battery pulls were because of something that I did wrong.
Thank you Mister Ypsilon.

*Can do a CWM backup here [(Backup and restore -> Backup) NOTE: When restoring backup you must first flash a stock from (2.2/2.1 if the back up was done on either, and 2.3 if it was done on 2.3) as it doesnt backup the kernel]
To upgrade to nightly or from rc1 to rc1.5:
1. Download update and copy to sd
2. Go to bood menu -> recovery -> Custom recovery -> wipe cache and dalvik cache (in advanced) Install zip file from sd card(select the zip file you copied to sd card) thats it.

[Q] Motorola Defy+ MB526 CM installation doubts

Hi! I have some doubts to install custom ROM on Motorola Defy+:
When I install CM on Galaxy Note I directly download from CM website, but when go to look for Defy+ I found only the Defy (not +) and the most newest version is 7, instead 9, 10.1 and 10.2 that I can look searching here in XDA. What is the reason of this difference?
Exist any method that if I not like keep the CM can go back to my Defy+ original ROM and unrooted?
Actually the Defy+ have Android 2.3.5 with the operator ROM.
Thanks for your help!

The Defy/Defy+ has no official support from CM after CM7.2. Quarx2k maintains unofficial and highly stable ROMs for the device, despite its limitation of locked bootloader.
Root with framaroot, then install the 2ndinit app. Open the app, and press install 2ndinit bootmenu. Then reboot, go to recovery (press volume down when blue LED lights up) and take a nandroid backup. It is possible to go back to stock via flashing SBF using RSDLite.

I can do some of the steps but I have a problem:
> Already root with Framaroot: OK
> Already install 2ndinit + Superuser: OK
> Nandroid backup: OK
> In Android Bootmenu I select + Recovery --> Custom Recovery, OK until here.
> I do the wipes, OK also
When I try install the ZIP of CM 10.2 ( cm-10.2-20130801-NIGHTLY-mb526.zip ) the process abort and show me the message:
"(status 0) Installation aborted"
I read that for this error message, and the first time, I need install using DUAL RECOVERY (TWRP). I donwload the ZIP of this DUAL RECOVERY (CWM_TWRP_v3-signed.zip) but now start the problem, after install OK, I can boot again the device and see again the Android Bootmenu, but each time that I select CUSTOM RECOVERY the photo show a blank screen and later the Motorola logo and operator logo loop...
Here I don´t know if this is correct or I miss press something in any step, but I can´t boot again in CW recovery or TWRP...
I turn on the Defy+ normally and see that after wipes, the phone boot normally in a clean stock 2.3.5 if this info is usefull...

Ups, this mean than now I need install again from the 2.3.5 the 2ndinit to get back the CW recovery, right?
After this I need:
- Install the CM 10.1 from CW
- Install the CM 10.2 from CW or also here I need install before the DualRecovery and from TW install the CM 10.2?
Thanks for your help again!

Anyone have the link of correct zip of gaaps? I already download one for 4.3 from goo.im but show me a error when I try install.
Thanks again!
UPDATE: I already download a pack from goo.im labeled as: gapps-jb-20130813-signed.zip
install done, but after turn on the phone I look that this pack not have Google Play, can be possible?
Phone work perfect but not connect to my local operator no signal, no 3G I select from settings-- Advanced -- Baseband selection -- and America Argentina Claro 3.4.2-107.9 that is my local operator. I reboot, but nothing work Any idea?

Fixed this I change by the 6.14.7 that no have the label of my operator and work!!!
Now look that all work fine after I install one pack of gapps called gapps-jb4.3-20130813-minimal_edited_20130814.zip from this post. All look good but the strange is that I need install all apps manually, not autoinstall when I login. Maybe because is a "minimal" pack, right?
Now I try restore some data from old apps that I made a backup with Titanium, but now titanium tell me that I not have ROOT access. This CM 10.2 ROM lack of root? How I can root again this ROM to can use titanium?
Thanks again!

Yes, the root access is a bug. To enable, go to developer options, root access, disable and enable again.
