I might buy this phone but the company is not famous in my country so was skeptical about it. Just want your reviews guys and its pro's and con's.. Is there any scope of having cm7,9,10 on this phone and is the phone "sources" friendly?
THANKS!
I'm sorry, but you have to be more specific, because there are several models of this phone:
Huawei Ideos X5, or the U8800
Huawei Ideos X5 Pro, or the U8800Pro
U8800-51, which in turn is also called "Impulse 4G"
All in all, you'd be foolish to purchase the original version, which I own, aka. the regular Ideos X5 (U8800). The phone was, for its price, rather excellent, but it is quite outdated at this point. You may want to consider the pro model if it's in your price range as it has official Android ICS, but I'd suggest you to look into Sony Xperia U. This phone was denied official JB, but it still officially has ICS at a low price point with a nice developer base. Don't take my word for this, as I don't actually own this device, though.
Note: The regular version, U8800 has a stable ICS ROM as well, built by dzo. As Huawei abandoned us on 2,2 Froyo with an unfinished 2,3 Gingerbread beta, we are all grateful for dzo for his efforts. (Among other developers)

Sorry for being not precise. I am thinking about buying the pro version and its about 200$ in my country INR 10000. It seems very gud phone on net and for very cheap! I think it got ICS official and has cm10 in development phase.

I will wait and see which phone gets the best development till the new year. I will start my dev work as soon as I get my phone. Is the bootloader unlocked in this phone? Any way to recover a hard brick on this phone? Something like USB jig for samsung phone?
If you are seeking phon with good support then check my signature.

It's good enough for daily usage and we've struck lucky with some very dedicated developers (like dzo), but from what I've gathered so far this phone is a nightmare to develop for. You sometimes get the feeling that Huawei has been rummaging around in the wheely bin outside the factory, looking for parts to put in there. Even for the exact same model, there seem to be several hardware revisions.
If you can get it, the Ascend G300 and G330 are much better options. Better built and the G330 might get official Jelly Bean if Huawei continues with one update per phone (X5 got GB, Honour and G300 got ICS).

Yeah, it's only been available for 3 months. I'd be surprised if it didn't get that kind of attention. It's very good value for money and should sell well.

Arent the custom roms already running 2.3? so.. why such a big deal haha?
Because the official 2.3 it's supposed to have all the bug fixes that are much needed (low volume in calls, low mic recording, crappy BT audio in calls, screen-lag issue fixed, sensor lag fixed, wifi tethering etc etc)

techblog.gr has infos for the update too. says will have the update on upcoming months.
I would suggest you to forget about official 2.3 Cause they have NO interest in making it cause it's stupid to work on things that are already on sale and they have newer models..they just don't give a damn about customers or their older phones. They may do 2.3 if they release or have any new model with similar hardware - so then maybe.. I don't see any reason why they should want to release 2.3
I believe they are going to release it as some models already have the upgrade.
Just be patient.

They HAVE TO DO coz google says so. There has been some problems on giving support to the old models with htc, samsung etc so google make some deals with them.
Eventually there would be an update but sure they dont give a damn to us so we would wait alot for this.

It can't come soon enough, sad to be reading about this new deLay. Totally sucks. How come they don't use some of the code already made available by DZO/Stockwell/geno on their Oxygen/CM/Miui ROMs?
I don't think HW by themselves will make 2.3 for U8800, coz they launched U8800 pro. Maybe we can take ROM from it in a future.
i hope they really gonna release it!
I highly doubt that there is going to be any offical 2.3 update.
It will come belive me. They said in the end of the year. So be a little patient.

I think companies will soon realise that some customers will no longer purchase their tech if there is an insufficient upgrade path.
I wont be buying another Huawei soley due to the slow/lack of support for almost all models within a few months of their release.
Why would I buy a new computer if it wont be upgradable to the next OS within a few months?
A computer running early ubuntu can still easily be upgraded to the lastest no problem, most companies nowadays worry about support first and about the tech later and i'm starting to get that way about phones, dont want to constantly change tech only because the support is ****.
Sure i understand the profit motive to make people buy new phones every 6 months, but its just getting a bit ridiculous when your talking about $500 phones especially in these economic times, if they put a big sticker on the outside of the box saying 'NO SUPPORT AFTER 6 MONTHS' i'm sure they wouldnt sell as well, everytime I see a Huawei box I just imagine that sticker on the front now

Yet another huawei phone that im sure will never get the next Android update
and support will be non-existent after a couple of months of sales
From engadget...
Huawei's four-inch flagship has appeared at a rigorous FCC screening, and this one comes with several radio band changes since its formal reveal. This new CDMA 800/1700(AWS)/1900 variant, making it through the Commission as the M886, indicates the Honor will be making a showing in the US on Cricket as the Huawei Glory. You can expect to see the Gingerbread-running device come with a 4-inch FWVGA (854 x 480) screen, a 1.4GHz single-core CPU, 512MB of RAM, a sizable 1,900mAh battery, an 8 megapixel rear camera and a 2 megapixel front-facing cam.
After having such a long time with a U8800 and no offical updates to 2.3 but continued promises from non-existant huawei tech support, upgrading to the new Samsung Nexus/Galaxy Prime as soon as its out as the specs for it just kick ass on anything else out there,
At least the Samsung will come with the latest OS and im sure the updates will be much quicker than anything huawaitforanupdate... could ever come up with
You bet Samsung or any other manufacturer will provide updates. Just changed to HTC Inc S and received 2 OTA updates in the last few days. Next to come is Sense 3.0

I've heard about that, but at least HTC cares about that and what users think... God knows what happens on the Huawei phones...
that makes me think of the linux-windows analogue..
with linux (huawei?) u r on ur own.. u can make the best of it, and u can also live in hell with it..
with windows (htc? samsung? etc?) u r well taken care of, and can live happily ever and after..
[edit]
btw, did u realise that by buying a htc or samsung phone, u r also contributing to the m$ empire's wealth and health?
anyway, not that many ppl care about that i guess..

I think they promised ICS for Honor (probably like 2.3 was promised for Ideos X5)
Anyone betting on it?
Somewhere was said that Huawei's main focus is on ICS and if they have time they'll do a 2.3 upgrade. Not sure if its true though.
Sent from my u8800 using XDA App
Sure the U8860 Honor will get the update... but the M886 Mercury in America probably wont. Same phone just a cruddier FFC and its CDMA not GSM. Cricket is a "unlimited everything for one low rate" provider and I doubt will care to update it's customers. But you get what you pay for... a $250 phone with service for $55 a month.
I'm buying the phone today and I will go on a killing spree if it breaks with in the first few months. By then I'm sure they will have lowered the price though :-/
I read somewhere that google's force company's to have last android updates on recent models. that means even x5 have to be updated to ICS because its an 2008+ model. and so on.
I don't know much about this, I tried to search for anything about that quickly and came up dry. Recent models will be updated I'm sure, but if your phone is a year old then too bad.
Also, On Google's site it says that old Android versions can be shipped on any device, since it's open srouce, but can not carry the name Android and will not be part of the Market ecosystem.
Baiscally, I think its up to the manufacturer if they want to spend the time to get the new OS updates to work with a phone even though Google tries to make it easy. Low-end models will suffer and get lost in the dust.
Now about carriers pushing updates OTA... I think that will only last about a year to 18 months. Why give you the latest OS when you can come back and spend more on a new phone?
Food for thought: A year ago I bought the Samsung Galaxy-S from T-Mobile, it didn't have the latest Android version. T-Mobile said they weren't planning on pushing the update OTA when it came out. Instead said to use Samsung's Kies which failed miserably. At the time I wasn't the only one who had trouble with the software. So I loaded up a custom ROM with a newer Android OS and a sleek dark look.
Looks like a cool phone. Happy with the x5 for now though.
Guess the moral is you get what you pay for really. Huawei package good hardware into a reasonably nice phone and they sell it cheap, why do we expect updates to next version of Android? You pay an extra couple of hundy for a sammy or htc with the same specs, you can start to expect updates. Buy an Iphone and it is a part of the deal for a generation or 2.
It is the biggest problem with android that there is no central control. Google makes a new version, phone manufacturer has to update everything to support it, carrier has to decide to push it and then customise it and then you have to update it using any of a bunch of methods. It is too messy and nobody has control to make sure phones are good and functional before being shipped out the door.
Also ICS has bumped up the minimum specs so everything down in spec from a nexus s should not expect ICS any time soon if ever.
I love xda for making cheap phones completely usable and awesome with custom firmwares and great devs.
Currently from Huawei official BBS there is no plan to release ICS version to X5. The new model Honor already have the ICS pilot version.

the above about min requirements is far from true.. If you have a phone that will run 2.2 or above it WILL RUN ICS Better. The biggest improvements in ics is in how it handles memory and cpu cycles. It all uses a whole new ui called render script. that threads the ui thru the gpu Hardware rendering. This makes ics run even better on older hardware.
This is all over the net check it out. and YOUTUBE as well..
I to am wondering about ICS ON The mercury. Unless we can gind a very good DEV that can port the u8860 rom to the M886 . from gsm to cdma .
Anyway just my opinion. I went from honeycomb to ics on my icionia a500 and its like a new device

Does anyone here own the Huawei Honor? I plan to buy this phone. What are your impressions with it?

By the way, what are the differences between Ideos X6 and Honor?
I got the Honor 10 days ago !
For what it is, this phone is great, getting it was a very last minute decision (duty free shop in the Airport), but I'm happy I did.
I was able very easily to put ICS on it and it runs great every thing is better about the phone (except for the camera which is horrible), the ICS room is from HUAWEI and its called Cambodia Demo but it works great including Google play.
I heard they was updating 07/13/12

Huawei = ZERO client support updates that makes the phones even worst, so you will be on your hands.

or can be supported with custom roms ?
The next version of Cyanogen will be based on ice cream sandwich!
Maybe we could not get the ICS, because Huawei will not creat the 3.0.1 kernel for X5.

I highly doubt there will be official ICS. Huawei doesn't seem to be the best company at giving updates to our phones. Still no gingerbread and you guys are talking about official ICS.
EDIT: People should also read the forums rules. Development forum is only for rom, kernel etc development. So if you are not developing anything you should put these in the general section of the forum.
What is needed to be done to get the 3.0 kernel to this phone?
with custom roms supported.... k?

yes, right...
Then, as soon as the code comes we will be able to know which phones can take it.
It is my assumption that the U8800 will have some minor problems with it, if ram is an issue.I find no problems with the hardware though. If ICS has hardware acceleration on the browser and UI, our GPU can take it.I find no reason not tofcourse we will have to see what happens with the drivers, and what we need to change.
I am positive though.
Huawei Forums;
Senior Vice President of Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. Yu Chengdong: I see some friends who use the old product U8800 asking if 2.2 can upgrade to 2.3 version as their expectations and concerns. Huawei's mobile phone R&D focus to a more leading ICS 4.0 version, with the fastest speed for the main products directly to upgrade to 4.0, for which cannot be upgraded to 4.0 will also be upgraded to 2.3, unless some of the hardware capabilities are limited. However, Vision Honor and other new models provide the first public version 2.3, and then will be the fastly upgraded to version 4.0!
ideos x5
Vague bull***t... :/ Whats that suppossed to mean? After all these months of waiting for the "october relase of gingerbread" now we'll have to wait for a (probably fictional) upgrade straight to 4.0?
They just keep reminding us why they sell their phones so cheap dont they?....

i think it will
i think it wont..
On this site, it says all newer devices HAVE to have the latest update for the first 18 months after they go on sale. I think our u8800 is new enough. (In Estonia available at August, announced in December 2010 worldwide?)
And, Open Handset Alliance members are here, as you can see, Huawei is there.
And I read somewhere that ICS should support >1 year old devices, so even if we don't get the official port, we'll get a custom one hopefully.
would be great to have ICS to x5

Please guys don't go for U8800, instead go for U8800 PRO. It has got more ROMs here at XDA, better configuration. Also has Official ICS update. Its not there for U8800. M using Pro and there r many ROMs both of GB and ICS to try out this phone. and JB is soon going to come out for Pro and not for simple U8800, since a developer is developing it and going to release it for u8800 pro only. So go for U8800 PRO, not U8800.
If you can get the g300 (8815/8818) where you are, go for that one. Upgrade to ICS available now, bigger screen, nicer build. Just better all round. Otherwise get the x5 pro. The regular x5 has not even got an official gingerbread running on it let alone ICS or jellybean.
Thanks all,
But who say the ICS or JB can not available on U8800 ?
We have many dev and i believe nothing we cant do !
I will try on U8800 and waiting for the "best ROM" for it !:victory:

Good and versatile phone.
You won't find a device for same price with same specs.
Worst or basically non client support from Huawei.
This you can get only from the store you bought itand here you will have all the assistance needed.
it wont break screen easily rite?
Rik[Rittik]
The screen might be a bit difficult to brake, since if I am not mistaken there is some space between the plastic and the screen. But the device is made of plastic so if you drop it frequently it might have some problems. Noone can quarantee that your phone will be OK after a drop....
Official support sucks.
Its a armv7a.

You should probably look elsewhere. This phone is now getting on a bit and will most likely never have a working jelly bean ROM. Huawei has released some new phones like the Ascend G300 and the recent G330. They are better built, the G330 is much faster and they have official ICS. Might even get jelly bean at some point.

Save your money and don't but Huawei. Go for a Samsung our something
Its armv7... It is dependant on whether model it is. You don't want to have the U8800H since it has limited support.
My honest opinion is if you can't afford the very cheap nexus 4 then there is no doubt that this is the phone you definitely want. It is really durable especially the scratch proof screen (Mine has never been scratched) but dropping any phone on a marble would do some sort of damage. Yes its arm 7 and the service center varies between country as one is located in each I think? The one in my country (New Zealand) is extremely good. Mine got hard bricked and they had it back to me within a week of me taking it into the store I bought it from and they gave me a free micro sd because the first time they sent it back the camera told me it couldn't be found. And if you are wanting to get into developing yourself then I 100% recommend this phone to you. Hope this has helped your decision.
