How do I do a NFC transfer with another Nexus 4? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I searched "nfc", but couldn't find an answer. How do I perform a NFC transfer with another Nexus 4? It looks so simple on the Samsung commercials; simply touch the two, back to back. I assume both must, somehow, have NFC enabled, or is it always enabled? Then, I assume one must have the transfer item open? It seems to be an easy way for my wife and I to transfer data between our Nexus 4's. But, I don't know how to go about doing it. Thanks for all help.

Well you have to turn on the nfc chip on the device through settings>wireless and networks>nfc and the android beam in the same menu. Then you open up your media on the device i.e. a picture then you want to share then touch the back of the devices to each other. Note both devices need to on and not in sleep for this to work. after they are touching a space background appears around the media you are sharing then. Once it appears then click the media on the device that you are sharing in the space screen then bam! That person now has that picture or whatever you are sharing.
Happy Beaming!

Does Weather use Data? And ActiveSync question

Hello all!
I'm happy to report I've just ordered an HTC Vogue, and I've got two quick questions. I will not have a data plan with this phone, so my first question is this: does the weather screen require a data connection to update? If the data connection is disabled, what appears on that screen?
Secondly, I plan to use the GPS function of the phone with Tomtom. Will I be able to transfer files to the MicroSD card via the USB connection using ActiveSync, or will I need to get an adapter for the MicroSD card and write the files to it from my desktop PC first?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Bogus
yes it does.........without data plan, you will be paying more than what you should be paying for just simple weather report.
Why don't you get an Opal or Diamond. I think they both have wifi, and you can update when you are at home or where there is internet connection.
It's a bit too late to change my mind at this point. I plan on completely disabling the data transfer on this phone, so I won't be paying anything for that aspect actually. The short version of the story was my old phone died and I was able to get a Vogue for a reasonable price without extending my contract. Unfortunately adding a data plan is not an option for me currently. I don't really need the weather screen, just wondering if it'd function. Guess not. Can it be disabled or not shown? My primary reasons for getting this phone were really its hackability and being able to use GPS without a data plan (using Tomtom and a memory card). I'm not sure about the Opal, but an unlocked Diamond will surely cost three times what I paid for my Vogue.
In any case, do you know the answer to the ActiveSync part of my previous question? I did order an 8GB Sandisk with a USB adapter/reader, so if I have to I can transfer files directly from my PC, but it'd be easier to do it directly through an interface to the phone.

If your tranferring a lot of data, sync the card directly through the PC, it will literally be about 10x faster. But, sync all your music files through the device with WMP. Syncing this way will add all the album covers and info, as long as it's on your PC, for use with an app like S2P.
Thanks for the advice. Ironically, music is what will be filling most of the card. When you say sync the music through WMP, how exactly is that done? If there's a faq or sticky on that I'd be glad to hit the books and stop asking questions. Would I need to have the music files in my Windows Media Player library on my PC and somehow synchronize my library on the Touch? I'm really not familiar with the concept of ActiveSync at all.
Edit: Oh, and one last question.. what is S2P?

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Search for S2P, you're in for a REAL treat. It's part of A_C's slide suite, S2U2 - Slide to Unlock screen locker, like the iP***e, S2V - Slide to View, nice photo browser, and S2P - Slide to Play, just a real kick ass music player ! Unfortunately, there are some sites out there selling his work, so all development has come to a stop. But, be sure to check them out.
Anyways, ActiveSync (XP) , or Windows Mobile Device Center (Vista), primarily is the tool to sync your PIM data, like calendar and contacts, with Outlook. Once your setup with AS or WMDC, open WMP, and open the sync tab. Make sure you only setup the SD card, otherwise when you open your library, only in WMP on the device, it will default to the device memory, kind of a pain.
I personally setup Auto Playlists, so my lists are always updated, something like, "Recently Added", or "Top Rated." When you setup the device, I suggest setting it to auto sync on connect, then all your ratings and play counts are always updated. Then choose your personal playlists, otherwise all your pics and vids will be converted and synced.
Also, if your like me, organize everything neatly. All my track names, artisit, album names, etc are filled in so searching for music is easy. If you use S2P, you may want to make sure the file names make some sort of sense, because in S2P you browse by file name.
Bottom line, if your PC's library is organized well, it will be transferred that way, making listening to music much more enjoyable.

not to thread jack, but i thought that you still would need a data plan for the gps to work? or is the gps antenna still in the phone unlike the wifi antenna?
Awesome, that'll work perfectly. And, I just did a bit of reading on WMDC, looks like it allows data connections to be shared with the mobile device too, which means I could dock my phone in the morning at home and download things like Email and weather, and again when I get to work. Can you save email replies while the phone is "offline" (not connected to data) and have them send when the phone is sync'd again? If so it sounds like the only thing I'd be missing on the phone would be the ability to surf the net or email when I'm not at home or at the office... which is OK with me.
I promise that's my last question for now, at least until I get my phone and start working on it. I wish there was some kind of "rep" system on this board- you've been extremely helpful tonight. Thanks!

From what I understand you can use GPS with a navigation application such as Tomtom Navigator, which stores all of its maps on your memory card. It simply uses the GPS to update your present location. At least I certainly hope that's the case. TheChamp or anyone else watching this thread, please feel free to confirm or deny what I've suggested.
Update: This is the thread that gave me that impression. I may try the "offline Google Map" bit too, although I prefer the 3D navigation view. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=402069&highlight=GPS+data
that sounds like it could be right, but im wondering how big of a file the gps maps would be now.
Approximately 847MB for the United States and Canada. I don't plan on going to Mexico anytime soon, so I think that'll do. And while it's not exactly a tiny amount, it's certainly an acceptable size considering I'll be working with an 8GB memory card.
nice, i dunno if you got started on it yet but heres a link i found and from what everyone is saying it works great...let me know how it goes..
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=24925
Well, I lied. I do have one more question for TheChamp or someone else "in the know." In a related guide to installing Rev.A/GPS, it mentions that "you cannot take calls while connected to GPS."
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=24979
Keep in mind, you will NOT be able to receive calls or text messages while GPS is active. This is a known bug and to date there is not known fix. It is just something we all have to deal with until someone figures out the missing link.

Is this true? That sounds like a severe limitation. If I'm going on a four hour road trip (which I frequently do for work) I don't want to have to pick between GPS and being able to speak with people. Ouch.
Where to begin !

I have the unlimited plan, so personally I pay no attention to this matter. But, the GPS and data connection are two different aspects. The GPS is like Wi-Fi, in the sense that it operates seperately. The GPS antenna will pick up the sat signals, and the only time I've seen a data connection initiated is when the map images were refreshed. So an app like TomTom with predefined maps should work, since it's simply pin-pointing coordinates to the map.

Yeah, this will work for everything! If you use Outlook, then you can sync your emails through WMDC and it will exchange the emails upon sync. The only downside, when you type up an email in the morning, it won't be sent until your next sync, but it works. Also, there are some apps, like Spb Insight (RSS reader), that will refresh content on sync/dock, makes good for refreshing headlines for the day.
Don't worry about the question! There is plenty to learn here, just be sure to ask in the right areas.

At first, it seemed logical, since the GPS is enabled on the radio flash, which does affect the phone connection, but I had to test! I never noticed this problem, and from my test, NO problem woooohooooo !
I had six sats connected, called myself from my land line, recieved the call as usual, hung up, and still had all six sats running, not to mention, while obtaining a fix I was recieving email. So, should be good to go with this!
Confirmed: GPS does work on the Sprint Vogue without a data plan, AND can take/make calls at the same time. Interestingly, the first two times I got a lock it took 10-15 minutes. Every time since it's been anywhere from 1-5 minutes, usually closer to two or three. Can't complain about that! I wrote up my entire process, in case anyone has been following this thread. It wasn't very difficult but did involve a fair amount of research before acting, so if you're going to retrace my steps READ THE DIRECTIONS ON EACH PAGE please, so you don't brick your phone.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2670205&postcount=7
You don't need the data plan to use GPS, HOWEVER if you want to use mapping software you'll have to use the standalone apps like TomTom that store maps on a data card.
With the data plan you can use apps like Windows Live Search and Google Maps that download "live" maps as you cruise.
Both have their advantages. I especially like Google Maps satellite view.
Yup. I've been using Tomtom Navigator, which stores the maps on my MicroSDHC card. It doesn't have satellite view, but it does 2D/3D which is good enough for me.

[Update 13/Oct] Beta Testers Wanted for WiFi Direct app

Hi guys,
Google market version is the most up-to-date.
Soon to remove the BETA tag out of it.
New Link as of 13th of October!!
Ok, file handling should be spot on now.
I've tried several different ways of sending from good sources and bad sources and I reckon I cover all the bases.
To organise some stuff I've removed the internationalisation, sorry, for now is english only, soon I'll put back the other languages.
If I managed to put the tutorial on it on the next few hours I'll update it as V0.4 on the google play, but I'm not sure it's going to happen, maybe tomorrow.
so the plan now is:
- tutorial
- tips n tricks
- logging for missing intents (maybe)
- future feature? NFC? bump? who knows.
have fun!
New Link as of 08th of October!!
Hi again guys,
I found out what was wrong on the file on the 7th, it was not the transmission or connection or even anything WiFi related. It's just that the files can come from several different sources I'm not properly dealing with them.
So here's the deal, this new build, I just blocked the files the app is not handling properly (most likely from 3rd parties galleries, and should work as expected on local files from the stock gallery). Files that are currently not handling properly should just close the app and pop-up a quick message saying "Can't handle this 'Share' at the moment, we're working on it!".
so let's recap:
- local media files from the gallery should work
- connection process is still and will always be hardware/manufacturer dependent and it might or not work.
- transmission (once passes connection) should work rock solid. Including canceling transmission midway through and also once completed tapping on the notification to open the media.
What I'll work on next:
- proper handling of every possible file/intent
- include a tutorial that will appear the 1st time the app is opened.
- a tips & tricks section with what I learned until now on what's best to get it connected.
and after that we should be in a V1.0... does it sound ok?
have fun!
New Link as of 07th of October!!
In this one I completely redid the transmission process and it's ROCK SOLID !!!!
The version on the market if you try really big videos they'll eventually fail, with this new protocol I've transferred HUGE 1.7giga video file without any problem.
Furthermore there's TONs of optimisations on the transfer speed that you won't see on this version, but it's already on the file and it will be unlocked by the future paid version that give around 2 to 3 times after transfer times.
Before put this version into the market I'll include a tutorial and link to the youtube video, but you guys can already test it.
PS.: also there's not much internationalization on this one, there some parts that language will be lacking, I'm aware of it don't need to come tell me.
Have fun!

I've doing an open beta testing of the first and only (until now) WiFi Direct sharing app available in the Google Play.
here is the link for it:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.budius.WiFiShoot
I just finished refactor most of the code and should be smooth stable now.
So I'm creating this thread to invite anyone that have a FORCE CLOSE to get a Logcat and post it here for me
Please also state if it was the Sender or Receiver, the phone manufacturer/model and which ROM you're running.
Please do not post if you try to connect but the other device fail to reply, or if you device reboots when you try to switch the WiFi Direct on.
Those problems are 100% unrelated to the App itself and it's direct related to the hardware and OS on it.
Developers info:
The WiFi Direct API is 100% with callbacks. So the app just requests a connection and wait for a callback. And sometimes the callback is "failed to connect".... why this happens? is up to the OS.. the OS is responsible to all the transactions and there's no API available for any app to interfere with the process.
Hi, Nice app! It didn't force close on me at all and the UI design has a good look and feel. I just tried it with my Nexus 7 and Galaxy Nexus (both stock 4.1.1) and it worked. However, when launching the app to receive you might want to add a help menu or something to tell you what to do on the other device otherwise people might think to share something you need to launch the app on both devices and then share from there (this is what I did at first because I didn't watch your video!)
Is there any way you can launch the app automatically on the receiving device when the other device tries to send something? Also tapping "Shoot" to receive something is slightly odd. "Receive" or "Receive Shoot" might be better.

Yeah, the help will definitely be necessary but at the moment I'm focusing on nailing the actual software functionality. Non nexus devices not always works so nicely.
When I started developing I though about the same (auto launching) but it can't be done, unfortunately, I wanted something liked the show on last year Google io for he ask. But no, I couldn't do it without taking over ALL WiFi direct transactions on the device, which I reckon it would be bad a behavior. Maybe in the future I'll thin about it as an option for the paid version.
About the shoot.... hmmmm..... it kinda feels better to have the confirmation on the receiver, but for sure feels like the text could be different, but then the "cool factor" of it is to have that single big button with a very simple and almost graphical SHOOT, that won't even be translated to other languages.
Something to think about it.

Great work, any plans to expand the functionality and maybe expand to share a wireless shared connection from your laptop using direct wifi?

Nice initiative, I am on evo 4g lte. I tried it with my laptop sony viao, installed to latest atheros utility which haves wifi direct interface.
wifi shoot found it, invited it, get connected.
I just tried to send a songs or 3gp file thru root explorer. without enabling wifi direct from setting.
In send option it shows wifi shoot. I clicked on wifi shoot.
wifi shoot connect to my laptop wifi direct. then nothing no transfer.
Great work. Very high potential. once again great initiative. Thanks.
I'm sorry but you misunderstood the function of the app.
Is a direct transfer from android device to Android device, and both devices must have the app installed. It has never been meant to be used with a laptop.

My Nexus 7 and S3 don't play wel together.
What does work is using the S3 as a hotspot and then run Samba on the Galaxy S3 (Root required)
Samba takes a while to activate.. but after it does you can browse your phone using the Nexus 7 and copy stuff... no limitations on specific file extansions either.
It work great... for a picture. But I want to transfert any file I want and Wifi Shoot! doesn't appear in "Send"/"Share" menu in ES file explorer or X-Port... What can I do ?
NFC pairing would be a great addition to this app! Maybe include it in a pro version of the app and charge a small fee? I'd definitely pay for it!

Can you both tell me which versions of the S3 you have? Some US variant or the international?
thanks.
Work great beetwin mu gnex and n7
Nice work bedalus, now we only need The ability to share every file, not only media from gallery
dropped by a jellybeans cup...
Just downloaded to both my N7 and my GNex.
I really need something like this for files. As of right now, I'm using WiFi Explorer. It works but this would be faster.
The version from the Google play store (v0.3.5) worked fine both ways with my Galaxy Nexus with JB and my bro's Galaxy Nexus with JB. We both had to looking at the program during pairing to get the notifications though.
I was able to transfer a 323 mb .mkv video file in 2:30 mins. Pretty good considering transferring the file originally to my phone took about 15 mins over wifi via a PC router.
By the way, is there any reason in particular you made it so you can only transfer pics and video files? The program would be much more useful if you could transfer any file type.
Can i use it between galaxy S and SIII?
Please, add all kind of file type. Not only image and videos, also others type (.pdf, .zip, .dat…).
Wifi shoot installed on i9100 and i9000, both devices on Rom ICS AOKP milestone 6. The process work fine only if I follow exactly the same steps on the demo video :
Receiver:
1- Open wifi shoot and wait
Sender:
2- Open the apps where the file to send is
3- Share via wifi shoot
4- wifi shoot apparears and select client to invite
Receiver:
5- Accept the invite
6- Click on big button shoot
Sending + receiving…
So, if we follow the guide of use, wifi shoot work fine. But please, add support for all kind of file type. Not only image and videos, also others type (.zip, .pdf…).
Please, continue to develop this great app, I hope one day you will be able to win money with it.
Wifi shoot are not still unique for wifi direct. There is also this apps, but not working at all for my devices.

Hi,
thanks for the reply and tests. Could you further explain, how else were you expecting it to work? DId you try some other way?
I'm currently working on a better protocol to make the transfers more reliable, after that is fine tuned I'll enable every file type, multiple files and photos that are synchronised from picasa.
wifi shoot! is a great idea ... but would be better to have some kind of server on the phone that allow to share any file to another phone or tablet. Something like an ftp server or upnp/dlna server. This way we wont have to send the files frome the phone, we will just need to request it from the other device.
I don't know how wifi direct works ... but if it works using TCP/IP the only thing we need is to know de wifi direct IP address of the phone to connect to any available ftp/smb/upnp server phone from the other phone/tablet connected via wifi direct ...
the problem is: the available servers will be bound to the external IP only or will accept requests from the wifi direct interface? maybe this willraise the need of a special server and client prepared to work via wifi direct ..
PS: sorry about my poor english

How to transfer content from iPhone 5S to Nexus 6P

Hello,
I just bought a Nexus 6P and had a hard time to transfer content from old iPhone 5S to 6P. There are a lot of free tutorials and recommendations on that, but up to now, only transferred the contacts. I also need to transfer text messages, music library and ebooks. Is there an all-in-one solution out there that would transfer those content more easily? free or paid one are welcome. It's just a pain to do it manually. thanks
As far as I'm aware there is no easy way to do that. I'm basing this in my experience moving from a iPhone 5S to a Note 4. iTunes really locks everything down.
I will tell you once you make the full transfer to Android its super easy to keep transferring and backing everything up.
I honestly gave up and starting new.
Sorry I can't help further.

Found a lot by doing a Google search and it sounds like you might have already done that (?). I've been snapped at for not doing a Google search and I'm not going to do that to you. If you haven't already done it, use these search terms and a bunch of helpful pages will come up:
"transfer iphone to android"
"transfer text messages iphone to android"
Some of it seems like a pain but if you employ some patience, you should get what you want. I didn't see any all in one solutions which doesn't surprise me given Apple's strangle hold on its content. Like the previous poster said, once you get set up on Android, everything is seamlessly backed up in the cloud in a much more open format.
Make sure you load and use Google Photos along with Gmail (which includes calendar and contacts).
Welcome aboard!

I already created an Google account when setting up the 6P and will do as suggested. I tried samsung smart watch, seems but it doesn't work in my case. And Huawei didn't have its own software to help user for the transfer.
You need to make your iPhone visable as a mass storage device. Also enable show hidden files in you're file explorer on your comp. Then you can manually pull the music off it and put it on you're nexus. It will take a long time to do but it's possible. I'm not sure what to do for other stuff though. But I know this works for music on the iPhone.

Only photos are visible when using iPhone as a mass storage device on my windows pc. There is no option for music. Are they in hidden folder?

How can I disable Windows Feedback on my 950 XL?

I want to disable the stupid Windows feedback app, which is always popping up when I press the <on/off> and <down volume> keys by accident.
Any suggestions?
As far as I know, that's not possible

Thanks Teddy. I think I am going to have to find a way to root the phone. There's lots about it I like (e.g. the update to the camera app that means I now have a panorama option that actually works quite well), and lots about it I don't like (e.g. the fact that it seems not to be able learn the words I use regularly - every time I type "for" it insists on telling me I really meant to type "fir"; and the bluetooth is pretty bad - I can't connect to my Bose SL III reliably, but my ancient Samsung Galaxy II has no problems).

Well, there are some tools available to root the phone. The way I can see that might work is to completely remove Win Feedback from the phone by accessing the OS FileSystem and deleting app's files.
You can very easily gain access to the filesystem: Create a shortcut to your C: drive on pc and upload it on the phone, from here open it with File Explorer and you're on the root of the device (this actually works ). From there try to find the Win Feedback app and delete its files. Be careful as doing something wrong, you might need to reset the device.

Hmmm ... tried that but I must have stuffed it up. All I get on the phone is a link to the shortcut on my PC. I'll try emailing the shortcut to myself on my phone, then save it from there. Will let you know what happens.
LATER: Nope, that didn't work.
I have the answer !!!

DM98 Smartwatch Help

Hi i just got my DM98 smartwatch and had a few questions for anybody that has the answers.
1.) I got the watch synced to my phone and i wanted to be able to send and receive text messages, make and receive phone calls, and use the internet.
Question: is there an app or trick to make this possible or am i just S.O.L. ?
2.) I have read that it is possible to create your own clock faces.
Question: Is there a guide that details how to do this?
3.) Question; if i want to do anything do i need to root?
These are all the questions i have at the moment. Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

The trick is simple - go to the play market and look for notification software with a set of features you want.

The guide is simple - you should write your program. It's the most flexible way. Second option - you can go to the market and look for face designer or similar application. It' limited, of course, but you can try it. Third option - get watch face that you like and go into it's folder. There you'll find some pictures and may be fonts. Now you can delete the pictures and replace them with your own (with same name, of course), then restart your watch face application and you'll see your pictures instead of removed. It's most limited customization, but it's simplest.
Here is one watch face application.

If you really want to do ANYTHING you in fact need a lot of money first.

let me clarify a little bit.... i want to do this all through bluetooth. i have tried a bunch of apps and none see my DM98 Smartwatch as a bluetooth headset or anything of the like so i am a little confused with the explanation.

It shouldn't be a headset. It should be something like phone or smartphone with the ability to transfer any data. To connect to DM98 first turn bluetooth on on both devices (DM98 and your phone), next make one of the devices available to connection requests, then the device will advertise itself and second device should see it. When it's seen just touch it and select "pair". Only after this you can start your notification software and use it's communication features.
In short - you should pair devices BEFORE any third party application can do something for you. The pairing is performed using Android's bluetooth settings, no third parties should be involved.

You are talking about communication software. Chinese smart watches usually have just a subset of such functionality. It means you won't get everything pushed. But you can try to look for such software at the market. Search for key words like "notification" "smart watch" and so on.

well if that if the case i have tried many different apps and nothing works so i guess i am s.o.l. and need to return the watch so i can find one that does what i want. i really like this watch though because it is running full android 4.4 with full access to any app in the play store.

my watch not opening. when i press power button there is nothing happen. what can i do? is there anyway to reset with a button on this watch?
Hi, I have a question, how we do for have the sms on the watch via bluetooth?
Reset
Have you ever tried resetting the smartwatch there's like a small pin hole in the very back of it take something to stick in it the watch will shut off and you just restart the watch back up and that should have fixed the issue
No 1, you can try these aps to enhance your dm98
1. Watch android phone
2. Android control panel
3. Heads up notifications
4. Rotation control
[SOLVED] Still getting used to the tiny keyboard, I had a typo.
I just got the Dev C14 (Bluetooth reports it's actually the DM98) and when I try to log into the Playstore with my existing account, I get past the email and password, but then it says to "Type in the text you see here" with a prompt but I don't see the text. Can anyone help please?

For downloading software use wifi. Start with Google play, etc. Best for installing software is to do it from your computer: just log in to Google Play windows.

Personally I use the much more stable Droid Phone and Droid Watch, on Google Play.
