Now that we have GPS, can someone help me to...

Hey, Everyone,
W/ the advent of havin' GPS on our Titans, I was wonderin' if anyone knew of any anti-theft software. I already have Sprite Terminator, but if the tele's hard-reset, that's purrty much k'poot, y'know? So, I need somethin' that req's a pwd to be hard-reset, but would also allow me to send SMS to the tele' to send its GPS co-ord's, lock device, and/or wipe storage. Sprite Terminator lets me do all, but pwd-protect hard-resets. Also, I use GPS Test v.1.04 to effectively activate GPS (COM4, 4800 Baud, etc.) upon startup, but it opens maximized, and it can just be exited to disable GPS. Does anyone know how to:
1. Open GPS Test @ startup min'd, and
2. Hide GPS Test from task managers (by this I mean memory.exe and QuickMenu (v.2.7, & my task manager of choice)? (I also use CeleTask, so any help w/ hiding GPS Test in "Running Tasks", and Sprite Terminator (SGStartup.exe) from "Running Processes", would be GREATLY appreciated.

Upon noticing I hadn't gotten any RE:'s yet, I'd realized I could probably just run a MortScript (although, 'not too familiar w/ it) for this operation, right?

i would love some software like this as well...
much easier then calling your phone when you lose it
and if you ever get in an avalanche or something people can find you easier.

I don't think you read the thread, AstroGPSLauncher cannot be used to access the 6800 remotely. It is a great prog, but only for opening the GPS and keeping it open while you are looking out. It does not transmit a signal that can be tracked.

i know AstroGPSLauncher CANNOT be used remotely...but if it enables the GPS...then the Terminator can send the location etc....btw i still didnt get the terminator trial email so im still waiting for it.
i brought AstroGPSLauncher into the picture because...
Its small - minimal memory/CPU usage
Its always minimized - It always launches in the background...does not let the user know its running
Shortcuts - A user can create a path/shortcut that it will launch itself plus anything else; ie: terminator

ok it wont work...the phone would technically freeze every time it went into standby when running astrogpslauncher.
unless the terminator program can launch an app when you send a txt msg like it deletes everything upon recieving a certain txt msg
if possible we could send a txt msg and it would launch astrogps...as we all know astrogpslauncher is a small app that runs in the background and not visible to most task managers and does not put strain on the cpu or memory so less chances of phone freezing
it would be doable IF and only IF the program is capable of launching another program

::sigh:: Perhaps you're all missing my point of this thread. I already know that the GPS doesn't stay on while the device is suspended, and initiating the GPS isn't the prob. The prob is that Sprite Terminator doesn't have a hard reset pwd, so you can just hard reset the phone upon finding/stealing it, and then it can't be traced. I initiate my GPS upon startup by copying the GPSTest.lnk to /Windows/StartUp, so my GPS is actually always on, running in the background as long as the device is awake. The prob w/ this is that since I need the GPS initiated in order to track the phone, what am I to do if a thief simply closes the program, in other words, turning off the GPS? That's why I'd like to hide it from task managers. Also, the Sprite Terminator process can be killed (which actually intercepts txts formatted a certain way). In other words, if an idiot steals my tele', chances are I can trace it so I can &(#^in' KILL 'EM for the audacity of disturbing my peace, but if another 933k comes across the tele', he'd just say, "Oh, let me kill this SGStartup.exe process...nah, I'd better just hard reset the phone to be safe," y'dig?

No, really, though. My thoughts are cooking a gps launching utility into a ROM with it set to auto run (much like astrogps, minimized/invisible). Even if they hard reset it should still have that program on it, set to autorun on startup. So unless they actually KNOW what they're doing, you should be okay.

i agree 100% with that theory...well i've been cooking roms lately and i am currently testing this hard reset thing...so taking what both of you (kain144000 & Psionfenix) are saying and putting it into one solution.
so if we cook the gpslink which kain144000 said into the rom, so whenever someone did a hard reset it would still be there...you can rename the process so it shows as "ppc.exe" or "service.exe" insted of "GPS.EXE"
Now that we have solved the issue of having the GPS running there when we hardreset; the next part is to track it; as for that part im still waiting for the terminator trial so i can cook that into the rom and test it

the terminator trial can be download on their website. if you go to support then terminator theres a download link. for some reason they don't sent the emails. i'm going to try to use the gps test

There was some software I used on the Treo 650 that would intercept a text message containing a specific string and do a variety of different things based on how it was configured. It could lock the device, wipe it, wipe the SD card, and so on.
A perfect program would do something similar, except have the ability to launch AstroGPSLauncher, and some kind of other program like Franson BuddyTracker which will broadcast the current location on a website.

There's a program or whatever depending on what service you have, family finder or something like that, so you can use that to track them.
Get close to where they are, call them up and watch them answer the phone, then bust their skull in for stealing.

Just a few available...Some of those use SMS to send location secretly other are simple friend finders.
But you know if you should ever have your phone stolen your carrier can track it immediatly and alert authorities even without GPS enabled...
Unless you plan on confronting the theif yourself (not really wise) your better off going that route.
But this might be good if you lost your phone and don't remember where....

from what i see thats only for GSM phones and it only uses SIM card to figure out its lost or stolen

The only question is whether or not we can get the internal GPS turned on when that text message is intercepted. I just sent off an email to their support email:

Trip to Alaska...want to Pre-Cache GPS Sat Maps

just as the topic states, I am going to be taking a trip back to alaska in about a month. I wanted to Pre-Cache maps for pretty much any gps program ( im willing to buy it if it works ) that would work on my advantage. on my nokia N800 there was a program called Maemo Mapper and it was amazing as far as pre-fetching maps for a selected area at a selected zoom level....With it I could pre-fetch the whole island im visiting and have it stored on my mem card...but thats linux heh. I'm not lookin for road maps either,only sattelite images such as googlemaps. Any input as far as what your using, and if its capable of caching maps and then pulling them up later with NO internet or cellular coverage whatsoever...thanks!
Im trying Virtual Earth Mobile right now, and the map cache feature is there, however you would have to navigate the entire path i was to travel in order to prefetch the area...no select specified area. and secondly but most importantly, the zoom level for virtual earth mobile is crap compared to say google earth, VEM wont let me get close enuf with satellite to do any good.

I would be very much interested in this if you ever find an answer. I know that you if you download the images manually which is a very pain staking process then you can use a number of programs. Like I said it very long process and for a small area it works.

I know under linux using maemo mapper, it was a very valuable option, and it was widely used. I tried downloading a program called tracky, which supposebly pulls googlemaps images and then will cache them for later viewing, but I am struggling with getting it to download the maps properly. ....we cant be the first people that have needed to cache an area of googlemaps at a certain zoom level....

on a totally different note...i was trying to install a game called "the mark" a sniper game...installed fine, loaded game and graphics glitched, had to manually reset via the reset hole on the back. rebooted ameo and it was like I had just hard reset....no programs, had to retap stylus and reset time/date. Now the microdrive and the storage card have ALL the files on them, just none of the associations for the programs installed on the microdrive are there...and all my settings/home screen are back to stock! WTF happened when i just simply reset the phone?did something with the game I intalled corrupt the phone? I was hopeing that AP4.0 would be out before something like this happened....If there isnt a way to restore the file associations, I will just backup the files I need off the drive and storage card, and then actually do a hard reset and format the microdrive

heh, I used to have spb backup on my phone, then i realized...that most of the time I did a hard reset was to wipe clean alot of the scummy programs...which was what I was including in my full backup. do i decided to go without it...now I wish i still had it anyways im not really that mad..only takes me a couple hours to get everything back the way it was manually. soooo....anyone else out there care to comment on their gps software?

I don't know man. I wuld love to have the same thing. I have a wireless router at home, and am probably going to cancel my unlimited data plan for awhile. There must be a way, free hopefully.

Before you cancel your unlimited AT&T plan, you should check out the currently available data plans. Last time I checked the unlimited plan was GONE, replaced by a plan that has a monthly data cap. (5 GB?)

Unlimited data ? In the great white north there is no such thing as unlimited data. $80US buys about 100MB a month!

well i've got a little more than a month before I'm heading off for a much needed vacation. Someone out there hopefully knows of a gps program where i can cache the maps to either the microdrive or storage card for viewing with my gps when I have NO data connection. As far as data plans go...I have tmobile's unlimited data plan...and with my minutes and unlimited texting, its less than 75 a month....now I'm not sure if thats truly an "unlimited" amount of data, but I have downloaded several 1-2 gig movies thru windows mobile torrent without any trouble....(and thats thru the GPRS connection cause tmobile dont have 3g in the US...at least not that im aware of yet.

Did i actually find something new that our advantages cant do? ( not due to hardware lacking, just no software to support it) I may end up digging out my N800 and charging up my solar bluetooth gps receiver...it just sucks to bring multiple devices..was hopeing to show off all the advantages power

I use Ozi Explorer, and generate large google earth maps using MAPV Ozi .. it's not the easiest to use (not native english program), and the calibration of the maps is wrong (must be manually calibrated).. but it's much easier than a series of stitched screen captures.

Since I cant rely on the local cell network where I live (and thus Google Maps), I just went ahead and bought Street Atlas 2008 since it was cvheap and included all North American maps. But while the maps are accurate the driections and voice prompts suck.
Next Im going to try Tom Tom Navigator, but its a lot more expensive.
Just suggestions if you cant find a way to cache Google's maps...

No worries. I FOUND IT!!
Not only can you store the maps, even sat view, google maps is built into it, among several other useful utilities. This is awesome. It also caches map images automatically, and you can change the destination folders. I'll attach pics of automatically cached images.
Features include speed alert, trip computer, geocoder, dashboard view with speed, altitude, percentage of slope, and g force. Much more.
So what's the catch?........That's right, its not free. Trial automatically quits after 15 minutes, but you can start the program over. You cannot save the maps with trial version. However, it says you can download street and sat maps on the desktop then transfer.
Why was this so hard to find? This should be for sale all over the net.

its very useful for your plans, you even can tell the programm the amount of space it should use on the staorage card to store your 'offlinemaps'. has a lot other more or less usefull functions too. in the momemt i try out if this is stable and reliable like gpstuner.
2. GPSTuner
is another one that does the job. i think its a bit longer on the market than tracky. it support some more map sources like topographic maps, not only googlemaps. i have used this for all my (offroad) outdoortrips like inlineskating the last few years. it has lovely statistic functions also. even a (survival ) trip by car across west africa (16 hours for 600km driving, wich means a hole lot of data to capture) was correctly handled by the program without any problems. in the moment it is my prefered app for the job.
3. GPSMeter
this is very close to gpstuner, but i dont know if it's capable to precache maps. i stop monitoring this one because the other 2 programs are already serving all my needs.
the are a dozend or more programs out there but they are more specific to things like gecaching, and (in my view) to complex to be used as 'every day all prupose gps tool'.

Preferably one of which aren't millions out there and a more complex one (using GPS and stuff).
So I'm hoping you could help me. Do you have any tips ?

May be some thing like an android firewall, which pops up when an applications initially try to connect to internet asking if we want to allow or reject the connection and remember the choice.. You know.. Much like an OS firewall. Something like littlesnitch (MacOS)
I dunno if this is possible, but would be great.

How about a GUI for bluetooth..
See what's connected and easily transfer files to another device..

Interactive firewall, that remembers your settings for each Application based on your GPS co-ordinates & the network you are connected to (Wifi, mobile and the IP range on the Wifi network - or options to that effect ) That's some advanced stuff to do!
Maybe build a complete network tool on top of the firewall? one that does subnet/CIDR calculating, pinging, MTR, tracerouting/pathping, SMTP/POP3 checker etc

Yup, i'm using it, but... Always after installing new app i keep forgeting to set up rules for it on Droid Wall So interactive firewall would be awesome.

There are two apps I want that don't exist. One is dead simple - a timed SMS sender. How often have I thought "must text Mum about X" at past her bedtime, then forgot to send it come the morning. It would be well handy to be able to specify a send time for a message.
Other is location-aware to-do/reminder. Most "Remind Me" apps work on times - either set times or countdowns. That's not how I roll. I want reminding when I get somewhere, not at a time.
"Remind me of $message when I get [home|work]"
Where $home = joining wireless network "HomeNet" and $work = joining wireless network "Worknet"
You could also do notifications on leaving those networks - "When I leave work, remind me to pick up milk/eggs"
There are GPS versions of these, but I'm not leaving my GPS on all day just for one thing. Wifi is accurate enough for me (although you could build in GPS as well, for added accuracy if want/needed by the user)
Hand-written notes (a la Staesj) is good too. As is speech-to-text notes.

Those are all good ideas. I'd use all of 'em. Lol

These are pretty much all already covered by Tasker...

Ah. I didn't know about Tasker.
Still, an easy-to-use, single-purpose location-aware reminder/notes app is probably more useful to more people - plenty of non-techie types, who would likely be scared of Tasker - would definitely find such a thing useful.

There's gonna be a usual calendar, plus location based reminders, plus friend location based reminders, notes (usual/voice, with/without notification) and alarms (with shake/flip/cover/voice-to-snooze), web-sync, and much more

Personally the main thing I've been dying for is SAMBA shares from my phone, but without having to root. If this was possible (or at least easy to do) I'm sure it would have been done by now, though.
Otherwise I think a facebook video uploader would be nice. I can't share more than 1 at a time with the onboard apps and have never found anything better, so I end up using Qik and sharing them to facebook from there.
Another idea (which has already been done, poorly) is to use your phone as a mouse/keyboard. I am not sure how many apps there are for this, but the last one I used (I forget the name) was pretty terrible. It's handy for HTPCs. The app itself wasn't the big problem, it was the Windows server program. It would take focus randomly, freeze, and there was no good way to hide it other than minimizing it.

No gps, but a video player (with flv support) that works on azure would be very useful to many people

Jesus, how many times is this going to be brought up? The function is NOT there, and it was known BEFORE any device came out. Quit the *****ing and get a phone that supports it, or move on.
Anyways, I'd like a good sports app like Sportacular that has notifications when games start, during and after with the scores. Fantasy updates with custom rosters would be great too.

Not sure what the SDK will let you do, but is it possible to develop an app that can be pinned to the start page, that toggles 3g/wifi/bluetooth? I know we can just drop in to the Settings menu, but I would pay for an app that put those three in one easy place.
I would also like an app that rotates, like a slideshow I guess, all sorts of images from the various Xbox games I've been playing across the tile. That would look cool on the start page. Maybe it does a Bing image search to find the images to rotate, etc. I'm not a developer, but it was something I thought of earlier today.

this is comming in dec development almost done..

The direct sync with outlook is not possible with the WP7 SDK. That would have to be incorporated into the Zune sync software. The WP7 is meant to be a cloud device so I don't see this coming anytime soon.
The idea about toggling the radios is also not possible im afraid. The SDK does not give developers any direct access to the hardware like that. Hell, we can't even adjust the volume.

That really blows. Just thinking about what various iPhone and Android apps can do easily, it seems this platform is much more closed than even iPhone's. The key to both Android and iPhones success has been as much the developer community as it has been the solid hardware the apps run on, maybe even more so the developers. The new WP7 hardware seems solid enough so far. If MS doesn't open up the SDK to a greater array of components, this will just continue to lag behind, even fall farther behind.

There's already one in the Marketplace for free. You have to have the YouTube app installed to use it, but it allows for searching, etc. from within the App.

not sure if you can make do this or not, but I would like to be able to connect to hidden networks. Also be able to use the device as a wifi router.

Could it be made downward compatible? It would be nice to be able to run some of my already-purchased software.
As an alternative, the single-largest bummer of making this switch for me will be loss of the two coolest apps I have EVER had – “Pocket Earth”, and “Pocket World” by Bluepoint Studios. These apps, especially Pocket Earth, were stunning! I don’t know their status, but if you could buy the rights and the code and somehow rewrite them for WP7, I suspect you would do very well.
I need programs which are NOT web-dependent. Dictionaries, translation programs, an atlas, etc. which are device-based. Traveling internationally is where one needs the language converters and I work a lot on the plane. I’d prefer to give up space in the device than to continually pay for international data.

There are a few out there, but I need it to either have voice activated start/stop, or stop/start control from my bluetooth. I am a sports photographer, and if I can describe what is on a picture that I take right after I take it, it is much easier to do my captioning when I get home. But I don't have time to take the phone out of my pocket and start/stop after each play.

It seems a lot of the suggestions are things to do with hardware. The only hardware access the SDK gives developers is the GPS, Accelerometer, and the radio. We don't even have direct access to the camera. (When an app takes a picture, it opens the camera app then sends the taken picture back to the app).

Will we ever be able to watch high quality youtube vids over 3g. Now you have to be on wifi. I know on iphone the vids are HQ over 3g.

1) Something that bypasses Exchange-enforced password entry. Android has it; and frankly, PIN enforcement is a meaningless layer of security that does nothing more than inconvenience the end-user.
2) Something that let's you copy synced Calendar entries and Contacts to the Phone instead of forcing them to exist in the stupid cloud. <--I would pay good money for this. Again, something that Android let's you do that I like.

3) An app that keeps the phone on and unlocked. I don't like this forced lock/timeout thing, I'd prefer to have complete control of when it is locked and when it isn't.

1) A Remote Desktop Application compatable with MS's current RDP services
2) Something that periodically rotates the Logon Screen Picture
3) Something that would quickly display Battery Life, Used/Remaining Storage, etc...

Google Music - Is it Useful?

Saw the announcement today and I got a couple of questions. What's the advantage of having cloud-based music other than being able to listen to music anywhere on any devices? If I were to stream music from the cloud, wouldn't it use up my data bandwidth and consume more battery power on my device? How's the quality of the stream? Is the audio quality going to be as good as the original music file?

As far as battery goes , that would be a yes ....
Yes it will use your data unless you have a constant wifi on the go

I'm in Toronto. I signed up for an invite using a US proxy. This is the same way I successfully signed up for Google Voice. Hopefully it works for Google Music.
I also installed the new Google Music app on my N1 (showthread.php?t=1072655), and it's pretty cool. It replaces the stock music player.

As a customer who has 500MB of data a month it's totally useless for me.
Even if I had a 5GB plan, why wouldn't I just throw it on my SD card?

The new Google app looks nicer, but I don't really like it. There's no way to queue multiple albums without creating a named playlist and there is no notification bar in the horizontal layout. I don't want my music app to hide my notifications, I don't see the point of that.

It's much prettier, but they REALLY need to implement lockscreen controls. I find those to be a must-have for use in the car.

Well right now I use the Amazon cloud and it works pretty nicely. And at first I wouldn't think I would use it at all. But I do use it on my work comp and my phone via wifi only. But Amazon does have the option of downloading to your device and they actually recommend it because of the bandwidth issue.
I too asked for the invite. As n1 user that has the wave, voice and gmail, this would be a great addition to my google pack .

I have the service now and checked it on nexus one and my new tablet. I should say the app is nice and the music service work like charm. You can pin music on your device so you dont need to download them again, but on a new device, you will have all musics again. All playlist will be syncs on all of your devices.
The only feature I love to see now is to sync back musics from N1 and tablet. The only way you can upload now is PC, this is my understanding, I need to play with it more.

updated to new version 3.0 and took almost 10MB of my internal memory!! Using titanium backup to integrate the app's update into ROM fails and it gives a force close...
HHmmm...I don't think I will spare those 10MB's for that one...

has anyone heard on any limits or anything the cloud based music will be? its a nice feature but putting 90gb of music up on googles servers will takes quite a bit of time for me, along with if there is a cost involved, i think my current set up suits me better than relying on someone elses cloud. granted the [email protected] stuff they were demoing puts a much different spin on things with the tungsten devices
I currently use subsonic which sort of makes my home computer the cloud with my music. I can stream my music collection from any pc mac or linux through the web browser or over my n1 or an iphone if i had one. to answer the op's questions about could streaming yes its gonna use a bit of battery and yeah, data usage will go up.
one of the options in subsonic that is helpful to some with restricted data plans is preloading a set list that can be done on wifi and configuring a max cache size in MB, i dont think ive seen settings like this available in the google music stuff yet

I don't see a big sence in Google Music.
Most people have the few songs they listen to on their computer, why store it in a cloud?

I think one of the nice things is it allows us more space on our sdcards for other things. I am constantly moving tv shows and movies between my desktop and phone, and if I cleared up the 15GB of music I have stored on there, that means less moving around of other files.
But, with that being said, I couldn't use this here (and I am not sure I would use it in the states), as they give me a 1GB cap per month which I always get close to or go over (then they throttle your speeds to roughly dial-up speeds)... plus the drive from work to home goes through two different bermuda triangles as far as reception is concerned (and my village is basically devoid of a T-Mobile signal, although I guess Vodophone or O2 has a signal there...). I don't know how much of your collection it will queue. And I definitely wouldn't do it if the songs can't load fast enough in EDGE (never really tested it) as I almost always have 3G disabled to help with battery life.

There's a number of advantages, like always being able to access all your music (I have 100+ gb, so it would never fit on the phone), secure backup for your music (in case of hard drive failure), etc.
You're not forced into using it, so it's just another option. I've previously been using Audio Galaxy, but that requires my home pc to always be available. This is a bit more flexible...

Still waiting for my invite. I am hoping that I can still use it in Germany (used a proxy for to request the invite... just like Google Voice, which the texting is awesome when overseas), but it may come while I am in the states for a month on leave. Either way, I am always willing to try out new things...
@Rat, how much storage did they give you? I think I remember reading it, but I don't remember... somewhere around 10GB for the free version?

Storage is unlimited and free "while in beta". I've no idea what the final number will be...?
