Quick question to the pro's
Whilst I haven't put a SIM card in my lovely new N4 yet (awaiting mico SIM from Vodafone) I thought I would set it up over WiFi.
I can connect to my router, home network and home server fine, but it is just sooooo slow and continually timesout. I have changed the settings, frequencies etc, restored router to factory settings and back to saved profile, but nothing seems to help.
Play store spits me out, and I have reset the N4 to factory 3 times now.
I will try on other Wifi networks over the weekend, and on mobile data when SIM card arrives, but was just wondering if I am doing something obvious wrong or it other have have similar experiences?
thanks
edit.......I did manage to do a system update, and now on 4.2.1
In my experience it is really fast. I get 30mbps down, as fast as I get on my desktop.

My N4 connects nicely to the router as follows from the settings
Status - Connected
Signal Strength - Excellent
Link Speed - 72Mbps
Thinking (hoping) it the talktalk router, as since I updated the firmware I have had other problems...........need to test elsewhere I think first!
Thanks
wifi issue is for sure
Look at other posts you will find many people are having wifi issues. I don't think you did anything wrong, it is just the problem of nexus 4.
Let's wish google would fix it soon.

Thanks, did find a limited number of similar issues listed when I did a basic google search, but hoping it was something else.
SGS2 in one hand works lovely, N4 in the other not!
As I didn't manage to test test it before the update to 4.2.1 I don't know if this release is the issue!

LOL, should have know better, oops!
Found the WiFi thread now, don't know why I couldn't find it earlier!
Something definitely wrong. My coworker and I are on the same WiFi and his signal is 100 times faster. I get 1000+ ms ping and .04 down and he gets 80ms ping and 3 down.

Seems like the WiFi problem is either hit or miss most people including myself have a perfectly stable WiFi while some people have terrible or not working WiFi at all. Not sure what's behind this buy hope you can get it fixed.

Thanks all.......
This issue was starting to annoy my experience with the N4 tbh
I just changed my router back to my old one to test, and its now working perfectly!!!! Others have reported issues with D-Link routers, of which the one I was using was a Talktalk supplied D-Link.
Lightening quick now........

As a fellow Canadian nexus s owner I have been manually updating my nexus s via the downloadable zip files here and there.
But I'm curious has anyone ever received a over the air update instead of manually downloading a zip file from forums like xda?

You mean... wait...?
Just the initial OTA after getting the phone, manually upgraded to 2.3.2.
I mean all the ones release so far

Not to go off topic but....
How are you guys liking the phone so far? I'm assuming you're on Wind or Mobilicity. Are the data speeds good?
Im on Wind and the service is terrible at times.

i've got no complains
and the only signal issue i have, might be a software bug
as other people are having it in other countries as well, so i doubt it's Wind's fault

how's the coverage using MobilityCity + Nexus S?
My Nexus S was 2.3.1 from manifacturer.
I received the 2.3.2 OTA from Italy (UK device).

For rthe past 3 weeks I've been using mobi and wind, wind has been a massive fail, calls go to VM with full signal, texts come repeated sometimes 3 of the same text, and data is an absolute joke for anything but browsing, hockey buzzer sounds before outgoing calls, half duplex call audio. And its been getting worse not better. They appear either in denial of the problems or unable to correct them. Mobilicity has been saving grace for me, flawless service everywhere I need it, even have service in my underground parking. No comparison at all Mobilicity > Wind.
I should add, I'm in Toronto

working great with Mobilicity here in Ottawa as well!

As for the service - I'm with WIND and have the usual probs..I live in the basement and get exremely poor reception even thou I'm in a WIND home zone with a tower right around the corner!! I also get that buzzer sound on outgoing calls - Was thinking of trying Mobi, but now not so sure if WIND gets LTE
If Wind is even allowed to operate after the their licence is now in jeopardy.

Hey, can somebody post a screen with their top speed (wifi) from their phone? I'm curious what real-world performance is between the "42mbps" radios is.
Ps-my home internet is rated at 18meg, so with devices connected, this is probably most of the pipe.

How can you have a WiFI speed test .
Its dependant upon the speed of the users connection and those are many and varied 3meg can be a good connection for some .
Mine is within about 1% next to the router but drops the further i move away .

Not a flame, but what are you talking about?
Wi-Fi has nothing to do with what the "42mbps" radio is. That is HSPA+, and is not in use when Wi-Fi is connected. And it is totally dependent on your carrier, and their APN.
On AT&T, H+ can be different depending on which APN you are on - either "wap.cingular", "phone", or "pta".
If you are connected to Wi-Fi, your speed will be totally dependent on your Wi-Fi connection's speed, and will have nothing to do with the HSPA+ radio or your carrier.
Processor? What I know is this - my Sensation can't pull these numbers over WiFi. I realize that it's not the best test, because it is not cell data. However, I wanted to see what kind of throughput my phone is capable of, and how an S2 does. And yeah, internet speeds differ, but somebody out there has an S2 and WiFi as fast as mine. I suppose my curiosity is more toward "does it utilize it fully" more than "I live by a tower and my cell speed is X" - which seems far more arbitrary to me.

No offense, but this is worse than arbitrary. You have no way of knowing if someone else's Wi-Fi is the same speed as yours, which already makes this "test" invalid.
If you want to know a true comparison between S2 Wi-Fi performance vs Amaze Wi-Fi performance, you'll need the two phones side-by-side hooked up to the same Wi-Fi.
My s2 pulls from 10Mb to 24Mb
Connection is 50Mb
Thanks to those who informed why it was a silly question, thanks especially to those who managed to overcome the silliness and post numbers. My question is answered.

It goes quite fast
SGS2 BT infinity fttc
My ISP is 100mbps
With wired PC I get ~90mbps down and ~80mbps up
So phone results are not very good
Some of you are going to say 'that's old news', but for the benefit of people like myself who maybe missed it at the time, I'm going to reiterate from something which was brought up a long time ago in the xda forums, found by accident in posts from a year or two ago.
There's this thing called fast dormancy. It's like a network power saving feature, which some networks don't support, and I found a lot of people saying that when disabled, can actually help battery life on 3G. I'm not going to go into that now, if you want more info Google it..
So it was as simple as adding a line into your build prop. "ro.ril.fast.dormancy.rule" with a value of "0" and rebooting.
I wasn't expecting much, but did it just for the hell of it. I've not really used my 3G data much since I did this about 4 hours ago, but I left my data switched on, which is usually enough to drain the battery a bit anyway, I'd expect to lose 7 or 8 percent normally just being connected to data. Just checked battery drain. Hasn't moved 1%??!?! UPDATE: It is still using a bit, but definitely seems better.
Also..... I've speed tested my data many times before. Usually in my house, from sitting in the same chair, in the same room, I always get say 2Mb plus or minus 0.5 Mb. Well guess what. I ran a speed test and got 5.5Mb!!! So I ran a few more and it never went below 4Mb.
Can someone please shed some light on wtf is going on here? lol
Edit: just ran another speed test. 5.26 down, 1.25 up. Something has changed here, I'm telling you. Maybe o2 have switched on a new mast right outside my window ( just kidding, there's no new masts, because there's a mast fairly close to me, I know where it is)... I've ran loads of these tests with the same phone, same network, same room, and same ROM before, and never got half of the speeds that I'm consistently hitting now. Maybe the network has been upgraded or something and its just coincidental, that wouldn't explain why my battery life on 3G does seem to be improved though..

Anybody else fancy running a speed test, adding the line into your build prop, then rebooting, trying another speed test, and checking out your 3G battery life as well?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using tapatalk 2. (Gone off HD...)
Tried it but unfortunately no noticeable difference in my case (on KPN network in NL). Thanks for the suggestion tho!
No problem. Maybe there has been some kind of improvement made to my network then. After having a think about it, if I am now getting a much better signal than I was it would actually explain the increase in speed (obviously), but also it may explain the battery life increase too due to my phone not hunting for a signal as much.
That's why I was wanting someone else to try, so thanks. I didn't realise it was possible in the real world to get 5.5 megabits from HSDPA. I wonder what the theoretical maximum is from it, and the real world maximum..

thks fr ur reply, really apreciate it
for my iconia the wifi isn't great but it's good enough to browse and watch videos. It might just be my iconia because most people have reported no problems with their iconias.
Hi,
a lot of people mention problems with the builtin microphone. Mine is working bad, too. Not useable. Even after sending the tab back to Acer and getting a new one its still worse.

however , some units had a defect in wifi signal (software problem not hardware) and there is an updater tool in their website to fix the problem

I supose you are using Rogers SIM. Buy other SIMcard and try it coz all seems ok.
This has been going on for at least a year the signal comes in sometimes but very weak in my house. I have another cheap phone I get excellent signal all through the house. The signal on my note 3 can have 3 bars but as soon as I try to make a call it disappears and says it's not connected to a network. This is so frustrating because I search for the network and it finds it but won't connect to it.
I've recently unlocked my phone about two weeks ago and switched service providers from Rogers to eastlink. I was hoping it was a problem with the rogers sim but nothing seems to help. The Sim I'm using works great in the cheap phone but can't use my note 3

could be an internal antenna wire unplugged or badly plugged too, did you dismounted it or bought second hand one ? It happened to me the same way as yours, just guessing
