No Flames, just a friendly WiFi speed comparison - Galaxy S II General

Hey, can somebody post a screen with their top speed (wifi) from their phone? I'm curious what real-world performance is between the "42mbps" radios is.
Ps-my home internet is rated at 18meg, so with devices connected, this is probably most of the pipe.

How can you have a WiFI speed test .
Its dependant upon the speed of the users connection and those are many and varied 3meg can be a good connection for some .
Mine is within about 1% next to the router but drops the further i move away .

Not a flame, but what are you talking about?
Wi-Fi has nothing to do with what the "42mbps" radio is. That is HSPA+, and is not in use when Wi-Fi is connected. And it is totally dependent on your carrier, and their APN.
On AT&T, H+ can be different depending on which APN you are on - either "wap.cingular", "phone", or "pta".
If you are connected to Wi-Fi, your speed will be totally dependent on your Wi-Fi connection's speed, and will have nothing to do with the HSPA+ radio or your carrier.

Processor? What I know is this - my Sensation can't pull these numbers over WiFi. I realize that it's not the best test, because it is not cell data. However, I wanted to see what kind of throughput my phone is capable of, and how an S2 does. And yeah, internet speeds differ, but somebody out there has an S2 and WiFi as fast as mine. I suppose my curiosity is more toward "does it utilize it fully" more than "I live by a tower and my cell speed is X" - which seems far more arbitrary to me.

No offense, but this is worse than arbitrary. You have no way of knowing if someone else's Wi-Fi is the same speed as yours, which already makes this "test" invalid.
If you want to know a true comparison between S2 Wi-Fi performance vs Amaze Wi-Fi performance, you'll need the two phones side-by-side hooked up to the same Wi-Fi.

My s2 pulls from 10Mb to 24Mb

Connection is 50Mb

Thanks to those who informed why it was a silly question, thanks especially to those who managed to overcome the silliness and post numbers. My question is answered.

It goes quite fast
SGS2 BT infinity fttc

My ISP is 100mbps
With wired PC I get ~90mbps down and ~80mbps up
So phone results are not very good

Enable HSUPA

Well have had my Bravo for just a week now and it's been pretty good minus a couple of niggles.
I would like to enable HSUPA to make it proper. Has anyone figured out how to do this? Is it similar to enabling it on the Atrix (and I don't really know how its done on it)?
HSUPA is the 3G technology used by the Bravo. It should use it automatically, as long as it's available in the area you are in...
Sent from my MB525 using XDA App
Its disabled on the ATT bravo.
I appologize I messed up. HSPA is the 3G technology, and HSPA+ is the 4G tech in the Atrix. I am not sure what's up with HSUPA as I think that it may be capapble of it, but the AT&T network may not have it enabled. I'll ask someone how it all works...
Edit: I just confiremed with my friend at AT&T that HSUPA is "only available on our '4G' phones". They released an update dlfor the Atrix because they can use that technology, but no 3G phones can use it
Sent from my MB520 using XDA App
UMTS is 3G, HSPA is 3G, HSUPA is Fast 3G (Faster upload, up to 5mbps), HSPA+ is 4G. You CAN use HSUPA on the Bravo. CM7 enables it. I get pretty patchy signal in my city but im using it now, ill post pic.

Ok now I just want to warn people to be carefull. By doing this you may be doing something AT&T doesn't want you to do aka accessing part of their network they don't want you to. Just because a phone can use a network technology does not mean the network provider wants you to. They provided the service to those using their 4G phones after they said they could. Don't mess with the network...

No it's not that big of a deal but it improves overall network performance of the phone.....all these phones are supposed to have HSUPA enabled.
You missed my point. The point is that it wasn't enabled in stock because at&t didn't want it to be for whatever reason. I have no problem telling people to screw with their phones. As an IT professional, however, I know how important it is to limit access to things not only because I am in charge of the equipment, but also for security reasons or it just ain't ready for it yet. I agree it improves things, but if at&t catches you you may find yourself without service.

Well I am running cm7 and I'm getting upload speeds around 330 kb/s with the "H" icon on. Does that qualify for hsupa? I thought it had to be over 500kb/s or so to be hsupa.

I'm sorry but 3GGP Release 7 (and 6) HSPA(+) was designed to run with HSUPA enabled, not with it disabled. No other carrier does this and data cards, iPhone 4, Atrix, Inspire, Infuse etc. have it enabled. There is no reason for it to be disabled on any device.

getting above 384kbps on the upload would represent HSUPA being enabled on the device.
Is there a way to enable it with a custom rom.
You can edit build prop to speed up data connection
Sent from my MB520 using XDA App
Doing what exactly? I looked and didn't see anything obvious.
http://hotfile.com/dl/125820243/2d2fa65/build.prop.html
try this. you will have to use root explorer or adb push it. I can not confirm that it speeds up data, but the tweaks do max out the hardware for data connections.
this build prop also has speed tweaks with calling, video streaming, gui changes etc.
try it out and let me know. do a copy of original build.prop first
O and use at your own risk as this is for personal use and if you use it I am not responsible for your phone (I always say that just in case)
Hspua is enabled on cm7 right? What about. Miui?

No matter the time of day, .40 Mbps is "typical" for download, .20Mbps for upload. That's on good days. I'm aware of all the factors that affect speeds, I just felt the need to vent about it for once.
I live on an island in the puget sound in washington state and 3G reception here is horrid. And that's after they've made some upgrades to our towers. I really don't understand why our service isn't better considering I live within miles of a major navy installation (Whidbey NAS).
Been on Sprint's Everything Data plan since August 2010 with my EVO 4G, which also requires the additional $10 charge for 4G capabilities (the nearest place I get 4G reception is over 30 miles away). I feel like I'm really having it stuck to me in the pocketbook.
If I don't have WiFi reception wherever I'm at, I typically wont even bother with 3G unless I have to. I'm more likely to just leave it off to save battery life.
Okay I'm done ranting, thanks for listening.

I am in a plant with a big project going on and it never fails at 6am the speed starts to plummit and stays that way all day. Until everyone leaves of course.
I feel for you putting up with that every waking moment though.
And please do respond on if you use the verizion hack, if it helps or not.

I had almost decided to move on to another carrier for the same reason. I looked at www.network.sprint.com and it showed a data speed upgrade withing 6 months. Didn't know if they would come through but they did 2 days ago. Now is decent.
Btw...check that site. For weeks my data was crippled worse than it use to. Maybe because they were working on it I guess....but now is good. I guess patience is key.

Same here.
I don't think you are the only one. I came to this forum today to see if anyone else was having this issue. I'm also in Washington (Bellevue) and I used to get about 1,000 kbps and decent reception. Lately I'm lucky if I have 1 bar of 1x speed. My speeds are just as bad as yours. How is your signal strength?

Poor Wifi on N4?

Quick question to the pro's
Whilst I haven't put a SIM card in my lovely new N4 yet (awaiting mico SIM from Vodafone) I thought I would set it up over WiFi.
I can connect to my router, home network and home server fine, but it is just sooooo slow and continually timesout. I have changed the settings, frequencies etc, restored router to factory settings and back to saved profile, but nothing seems to help.
Play store spits me out, and I have reset the N4 to factory 3 times now.
I will try on other Wifi networks over the weekend, and on mobile data when SIM card arrives, but was just wondering if I am doing something obvious wrong or it other have have similar experiences?
thanks
edit.......I did manage to do a system update, and now on 4.2.1
In my experience it is really fast. I get 30mbps down, as fast as I get on my desktop.

My N4 connects nicely to the router as follows from the settings
Status - Connected
Signal Strength - Excellent
Link Speed - 72Mbps
Thinking (hoping) it the talktalk router, as since I updated the firmware I have had other problems...........need to test elsewhere I think first!
Thanks
wifi issue is for sure
Look at other posts you will find many people are having wifi issues. I don't think you did anything wrong, it is just the problem of nexus 4.
Let's wish google would fix it soon.

Thanks, did find a limited number of similar issues listed when I did a basic google search, but hoping it was something else.
SGS2 in one hand works lovely, N4 in the other not!
As I didn't manage to test test it before the update to 4.2.1 I don't know if this release is the issue!

Thanks all.......
This issue was starting to annoy my experience with the N4 tbh
I just changed my router back to my old one to test, and its now working perfectly!!!! Others have reported issues with D-Link routers, of which the one I was using was a Talktalk supplied D-Link.
Lightening quick now........

Found setting for 3G to help battery life..

Some of you are going to say 'that's old news', but for the benefit of people like myself who maybe missed it at the time, I'm going to reiterate from something which was brought up a long time ago in the xda forums, found by accident in posts from a year or two ago.
There's this thing called fast dormancy. It's like a network power saving feature, which some networks don't support, and I found a lot of people saying that when disabled, can actually help battery life on 3G. I'm not going to go into that now, if you want more info Google it..
So it was as simple as adding a line into your build prop. "ro.ril.fast.dormancy.rule" with a value of "0" and rebooting.
I wasn't expecting much, but did it just for the hell of it. I've not really used my 3G data much since I did this about 4 hours ago, but I left my data switched on, which is usually enough to drain the battery a bit anyway, I'd expect to lose 7 or 8 percent normally just being connected to data. Just checked battery drain. Hasn't moved 1%??!?! UPDATE: It is still using a bit, but definitely seems better.
Also..... I've speed tested my data many times before. Usually in my house, from sitting in the same chair, in the same room, I always get say 2Mb plus or minus 0.5 Mb. Well guess what. I ran a speed test and got 5.5Mb!!! So I ran a few more and it never went below 4Mb.
Can someone please shed some light on wtf is going on here? lol
Edit: just ran another speed test. 5.26 down, 1.25 up. Something has changed here, I'm telling you. Maybe o2 have switched on a new mast right outside my window ( just kidding, there's no new masts, because there's a mast fairly close to me, I know where it is)... I've ran loads of these tests with the same phone, same network, same room, and same ROM before, and never got half of the speeds that I'm consistently hitting now. Maybe the network has been upgraded or something and its just coincidental, that wouldn't explain why my battery life on 3G does seem to be improved though..

Tried it but unfortunately no noticeable difference in my case (on KPN network in NL). Thanks for the suggestion tho!
No problem. Maybe there has been some kind of improvement made to my network then. After having a think about it, if I am now getting a much better signal than I was it would actually explain the increase in speed (obviously), but also it may explain the battery life increase too due to my phone not hunting for a signal as much.
That's why I was wanting someone else to try, so thanks. I didn't realise it was possible in the real world to get 5.5 megabits from HSDPA. I wonder what the theoretical maximum is from it, and the real world maximum..

Speedtests: GS5 on Google Gigabit Fiber and Sprint Spark

GS5 performs really well on Google Gigabit Fiber and Sprint tri-band. I'm getting up to 180Mbps on Google Fiber and around 40Mbps LTE indoors at home, though I'm just a few blocks from a cellsite. The first 3 results are on Google Gigabit Fiber in KC, the second three are Sprint Spark.

Just showing the max the WiFi on this phone can do. In comparison, a Nexus 7 (2013) can do about 100Mbps, the N7 (2012) and Galaxy S3 and can do about 25-40. I suspect most SnapDragon 801 devices would be over 150Mbps as well, not sure.

Which must be BS because WiFi won't do that fast lol.
These phones MAX at 866Mbps IF you have a AC router and happen to be close enough.
That said, WiFi has roughly 40% overhead so the best you could even imagine to ever see on this phone would be around the 500Mbps mark.
FWIW the speedtest app isn't dead accurate in itself.
It often times shows my speed faster vs. what I know my speed can do because I know exactly what my speed wall is and the upload on the phone generally overshoots it lol.
I'd be hard pressed to see you get gig through dual AC 1300Mbps routers even due to overhead.
They would be close but wired still wins.
I think for the OP the first thing would be what kind of router do you have, what band are you connected on and what was the link rate at time of test?
I bet the phone can do more but your wireless is the limit.
