Well have had my Bravo for just a week now and it's been pretty good minus a couple of niggles.
I would like to enable HSUPA to make it proper. Has anyone figured out how to do this? Is it similar to enabling it on the Atrix (and I don't really know how its done on it)?
HSUPA is the 3G technology used by the Bravo. It should use it automatically, as long as it's available in the area you are in...
Sent from my MB525 using XDA App
Its disabled on the ATT bravo.
I appologize I messed up. HSPA is the 3G technology, and HSPA+ is the 4G tech in the Atrix. I am not sure what's up with HSUPA as I think that it may be capapble of it, but the AT&T network may not have it enabled. I'll ask someone how it all works...
Edit: I just confiremed with my friend at AT&T that HSUPA is "only available on our '4G' phones". They released an update dlfor the Atrix because they can use that technology, but no 3G phones can use it
Sent from my MB520 using XDA App
UMTS is 3G, HSPA is 3G, HSUPA is Fast 3G (Faster upload, up to 5mbps), HSPA+ is 4G. You CAN use HSUPA on the Bravo. CM7 enables it. I get pretty patchy signal in my city but im using it now, ill post pic.

Ok now I just want to warn people to be carefull. By doing this you may be doing something AT&T doesn't want you to do aka accessing part of their network they don't want you to. Just because a phone can use a network technology does not mean the network provider wants you to. They provided the service to those using their 4G phones after they said they could. Don't mess with the network...

No it's not that big of a deal but it improves overall network performance of the phone.....all these phones are supposed to have HSUPA enabled.
You missed my point. The point is that it wasn't enabled in stock because at&t didn't want it to be for whatever reason. I have no problem telling people to screw with their phones. As an IT professional, however, I know how important it is to limit access to things not only because I am in charge of the equipment, but also for security reasons or it just ain't ready for it yet. I agree it improves things, but if at&t catches you you may find yourself without service.

Well I am running cm7 and I'm getting upload speeds around 330 kb/s with the "H" icon on. Does that qualify for hsupa? I thought it had to be over 500kb/s or so to be hsupa.

I'm sorry but 3GGP Release 7 (and 6) HSPA(+) was designed to run with HSUPA enabled, not with it disabled. No other carrier does this and data cards, iPhone 4, Atrix, Inspire, Infuse etc. have it enabled. There is no reason for it to be disabled on any device.

getting above 384kbps on the upload would represent HSUPA being enabled on the device.
Is there a way to enable it with a custom rom.
You can edit build prop to speed up data connection
Sent from my MB520 using XDA App
Doing what exactly? I looked and didn't see anything obvious.
http://hotfile.com/dl/125820243/2d2fa65/build.prop.html
try this. you will have to use root explorer or adb push it. I can not confirm that it speeds up data, but the tweaks do max out the hardware for data connections.
this build prop also has speed tweaks with calling, video streaming, gui changes etc.
try it out and let me know. do a copy of original build.prop first
O and use at your own risk as this is for personal use and if you use it I am not responsible for your phone (I always say that just in case)
Hspua is enabled on cm7 right? What about. Miui?

Cant wait till this is hacked into the N1!!
i mis read the #'s lol
First... those are 3G speeds, albeit higher than most of us currently experience on T-mobile. Second, anyone can add the 4G icon if they're rooted... just replace the 3G one with the 4G one, and there you go. That being said, bbuchacher is a pretty stand up guy and a well-known dev for the G1, so that throws my entire analysis upside down.
hoping the devs can implement this into the roms

exactly what i was thinking when i saw the screen shot lol. Still faster then what most are getting now though.
Those are pretty far from 4G speeds.
That's just HSDPA+ (3.5g?)
I'm in the NY Metro area, here's my T-Mobile runs:

Yep pretty much made this false. Ive hit 1600kbps off 3.5g as well.
i would be happy if i could get any of those speeds i see. my avg is around 700kbs on 3G. Even cyanogen i s saying he has the test code and it works.

Well if yet another Dev, Cyanogen in this case, is vouching for it...then there's not much more to say.
I don't have test code, I'm not even rooted, those are my speeds there in that screenshot.
They're probably getting HSDPA code updates to get us the max 7.2Mb/s that T-Mobile supposedly "on-lined" last year....I live in an HSDPA area and I don't get over 3.5Mb/s max so far, it would be nice to see 7Mb/s...heck, our tech specs don't even list HSDPA+, which would be nice to have...maybe thats what they are referring to, but even that is still only "3.5G".
By industry definition, "4G" is WiMax or LTE...neither of which are in our phone...
FYI, I guarantee this is not 4G and to say so is a major load of crap. I can also guarantee all it is is an ID key that tells the T-Mobile network you are a tester, and thus are not capped.
Simply put, this hack will be cut off if enough people use it since all T-Mobile has to do is change the ID Key this fakes to something else.
Kind of off topic. Isn't T-Mobile hspa+ 21mbs faster then. Wimax 4g. Even though our phones only support 7.2mbs wouldn't this still give us a speed increase?
WiMax 4G has a technical peak of 144Mbs/35Mbs, LTE is 360Mbs/80Mbs...
HSDPA actually covers a wide range of configurations that vary depending on how the hardware is built and deployed. LTE is actually considered the evolution of UMTS/HSPA-Evolved (HSPA-Evolved is the evolution of HSDPA).
The HSDPA+ 21Mbs networks being brought up are category 14, the 7.2's are category 8, and the "general" 3G HSDPA networks are category 6.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HSDPA
LTE is supposed to provide a final convergence of UTMS and EV-DO, though we'll still have a multi-standard market because of WiMax.
There's a lot of easy info out there to read about it all...

so as everyone knows knows T-mobile started to throttle speeds once a user passes 5GB of data. Well here is how to go back to unthrottled speeds.
Simply click menu-> settings -> Wireless & networks -> mobile networks
then you are going to want to click to use only 2G networks. Click back and wait till it connects to edge.
then go back and uncheck Use only 2G networks
(must repeat upon reboot)
You should now be connected to an throttled 3G network. Personally i was getting about 60 kbps before i did it and after i get around 2000 kbps.

Lol... guys, you do know there is already a thread about this in development, right?
You guys really need to learn to use the search button before posting duplicate threads.
I already had someone steal my work today but this looks unintentional and is a far inferior method to disabling the data cap (aka throttle). Check out development if you want a more permanent method...

Ok I just want yop point out to anyone looking at this phone that yes true 4g(LTE) is capable of higher speeds but initially even LTE right now in the USA isn't true 4g, LTE is capable of 100gbps, but the current LTE network isn't and take for instance surpass N a few years ago those chips weren't capable of full N speeds, true 4g is a few years away, yes LTE will be faster but until the networks are fully built in a couple of years they aren't true LTE or 4g, here in boston during testing it was getting rly quick speeds, but verizon has lowered the max speed, I just want to make people aware especially if looking at this phone

Thank You Captain Obvious.
I know I'm being obvious, but until an LTE phone is out, which will be the thunderbolt then we can see which one to get, and three other thing is by the time it is worth gettin hg LTE vs hspa+ people will be qualified for another upgrade

Verizon's LTE which is barely anywhere is only marginally if at all faster than ATT 3G/4G whatever you want to call it
And they have no fallback onto a true 3g network you would just get slow cdma speeds so people should really look at both coverage maps and then decide

LTE isn't "true 4g" either. LTE-Advanced is, and nobody will have that for years.
This is a stupid thread. The ITU has said 4G can essentially be whatever you want it to be, they backtracked, so it is now HSPA+ or higher, and also my pet hamster bob running on his wheel.
Verizon's LTE has several orders of magnitude more bandwidth in AT&T's not even launched HSPA+ network. They beat AT&T to market, it's no secret that Verizon is really good at providing a consistant and reliable network.
It's 4G enough for me, whatever that means.
My friend went to A verizon store and used a netbook they had an LTE dongle attached to. After confirming it was on LTE, he ran speed test.net, and got 1.8mbps down.

No matter the time of day, .40 Mbps is "typical" for download, .20Mbps for upload. That's on good days. I'm aware of all the factors that affect speeds, I just felt the need to vent about it for once.
I live on an island in the puget sound in washington state and 3G reception here is horrid. And that's after they've made some upgrades to our towers. I really don't understand why our service isn't better considering I live within miles of a major navy installation (Whidbey NAS).
Been on Sprint's Everything Data plan since August 2010 with my EVO 4G, which also requires the additional $10 charge for 4G capabilities (the nearest place I get 4G reception is over 30 miles away). I feel like I'm really having it stuck to me in the pocketbook.
If I don't have WiFi reception wherever I'm at, I typically wont even bother with 3G unless I have to. I'm more likely to just leave it off to save battery life.

How can you have a WiFI speed test .
Its dependant upon the speed of the users connection and those are many and varied 3meg can be a good connection for some .
Mine is within about 1% next to the router but drops the further i move away .

Not a flame, but what are you talking about?
Wi-Fi has nothing to do with what the "42mbps" radio is. That is HSPA+, and is not in use when Wi-Fi is connected. And it is totally dependent on your carrier, and their APN.
On AT&T, H+ can be different depending on which APN you are on - either "wap.cingular", "phone", or "pta".
If you are connected to Wi-Fi, your speed will be totally dependent on your Wi-Fi connection's speed, and will have nothing to do with the HSPA+ radio or your carrier.
Processor? What I know is this - my Sensation can't pull these numbers over WiFi. I realize that it's not the best test, because it is not cell data. However, I wanted to see what kind of throughput my phone is capable of, and how an S2 does. And yeah, internet speeds differ, but somebody out there has an S2 and WiFi as fast as mine. I suppose my curiosity is more toward "does it utilize it fully" more than "I live by a tower and my cell speed is X" - which seems far more arbitrary to me.

No offense, but this is worse than arbitrary. You have no way of knowing if someone else's Wi-Fi is the same speed as yours, which already makes this "test" invalid.
If you want to know a true comparison between S2 Wi-Fi performance vs Amaze Wi-Fi performance, you'll need the two phones side-by-side hooked up to the same Wi-Fi.
