Jelly bean vs gingerbread gaming and performance - Xperia Play General

Hi everyone I am currently running the NXT LE rom v1.3. I have tried various other roms but I find that this is the best one so far. Can you guys compare various roms and see which is better for gaming and performance, Jelly Bean (with new adreno drivers) or Gingerbread. Thanks
Every one list:
Kernel
Rom
Take Antutu Benchmark of your rom

from my experience, gingerbread is still the best android version for the xperia play
NXT LE with gin2jb theme,
Latest doomlord gb kernel
At 1017 Mhz
Score: 4288

Thinks too that a modified gingerbread is still the best choice for my Play. I saw that some guys got a bit higher Benchmark score on JellyBean but that doesn't mean that it is better for gaming. I really wish that more devs would pay more attention to GB.
Doomkernel v.14
DiXperia2
Antutu B. 6161 @ 1.8 Ghz.

Um........good point. But people are saying that with the new Adreno drivers that ICS and JB for gaming are better than GB. I only use my xperia play for gaming, so I have been looking for a rom designed for gaming, so far the best is NXT Light in my opinion. If anyone finds other please post

Come now, let's not keep talking about 'I think that, I think this'.
Let's start showing from numbers from Nenamark 2, since it's purely gaming you guys want. When you're done, just delete/wtv.
Let us start with a few ground rules:
1.0GHz Performance governer ONLY.
I/O schedule = whatever since it shouldn't matter much.
State whether you're using GB/JB.
Here's mine.

2nd run : 31.4 fps
3rd run : 31.4 fps
4th run : 31.8 fps
5th run : 31.5 fps

3D : 1950
--1.8Ghz (to align with above post clock)
Total : 6330

I have a locked bootloader so no fancy kernels or overclocking, but I'm sure it could serve as a base to compare performance.
Nenamark 2 [GB]

Second run: 13.6 fps
Third run: 14.0 fps

Newest Adreno drivers for ICS/JB makes a huge difference albeit the RAM consumption is higher.

WOW!!!! Your scores are much higher than mine and "aitmanga"'s scores. So I guess JB is much better for gaming, right?

Now I'm quite skeptical about that methodology. x2 more fps? I don't think so.
Anyone have any other idea on test methods? Antutu and quadrant scores aren't really useful unless you state the graphics score breakdown.
Edit: updated previous post with antutu for what it's worth.

I installed the SlimBean rom and tried Gta 3, it is no where as smooth as the nxt light rom ive been using, but the benchmark is like 29!!! Which is more than double my score on nxt light, but in real life performance JB is not as good as GB!! Even though the benchmarks show that it is

Well, some games are bottlenecked by the GPU and others by the CPU. There's no general rule like 'if one game doubles its framerate, every game should be the same' so GTA3 can be CPU limited.
Probably Nenamark is very GPU intensive and a optimized GPU driver can do wonders but each game has its own CPU-GPU balance.

I would have agreed wih u and up unill i came across jb slim I thought that nxt light was the best jb slim bean it the only rom which is really come near to perfection the only downfall is that u cannot record but u can use the camera to take pictures via app from play store for free. and all the other features work to perfection u can overclock to 1.6ghz to play certain games which are too slow to play 4 exmple modern combact 4. also u can download games from google play store for free which arent even supose to be working on xperia play like shadow gun dead zone and all this is not even he best part when u flash it normally u get atleast 550mb internall free well thats becasue how small the actual rom it self is also this is the least laggyiest rom plus if u like to listen to music then it has apollo music player bonus points so despite the loss of the recording feature it overall makes up in compare to every other feature. :good: if u are inerested i personally tested it on xperia play r800i alos thishas been tested on r800x the link to this is if u are intersed that is :fingers-crossed::highfive:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=35493383

for gaming i recomend - Jellyzeus (JB) or CM9.1 (ICS) - both can run GTA VC really smoth on low settings (25%distance / 50%textures, all other low or off) ...
if you buy xperia play for hard gaming, i recomend - NXT Light Ed. - its best...
but if you play games like wheres my water / angry birds, and want JB, its a good choice...

Looking for a 3D rematch, results after NEON

I'm sure you're all familiar with this benchmark test:
http://distinctivegame.wordpress.com/2010/02/09/dd-tech-talk-1-nexus-versus-iphone-3gs/
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GYqZK25KU3U
Its not a fair fight because:
1)The stock Android 2.1 OS does not utilize the new NEON instruction set yet.
2) the iphone is running at 480x320 where as the N1 is at 800x480. (i.e. the Nexus one's resolution is 2.5 times that of the 3GS...meaning atleast 2.5x the amount of processing). He did try running the game at 480x320 but got similar results with more fighters
Can someone with a new Custom ROM (compiled with NEON included) like the latest Cyanogen ROM, run this test again and let us know what you find.
update: Since nobody knows which game this is, lets try the free app "NeoCore" from the market so we see what kind of a difference NEON makes.
NeoCore. Dec 30/2009 Nexus One. 26.7 FPS
http://www.slashgear.com/google-nexus-one-3d-neocore-benchmark-video-3067327//
This is a weapon iphone users keep using against us and we need to set the record straight! (like the screen colors fiasco)
ps: I Do not know which game this is.
update 3/12/10, NeoCore gives me 27.1 FPS at 800x480 with my CPU at 1113Mhz
I'll be happy to run some tests if you can supply the correct link. I saw nothing but a long review(?).

Yes! thanks
I'd be happy to run it if someone can give me a link to the benchmark program used.
It is very odd that the app/tool they used is mentioned nowhere.
A little googling for iPhone benchmark apps showed me that "GLBenchmark" has no android version, same with "Mad Monkey Tech"
There is a "NeoCore" free utility on the market though. Maybe we can at-least get some Neon/NonNeon FPS values.
Dec/2009 Nexus One. 26.7 FPS

I would very much be interested in the results as well..
Well I just ran neocore on cm 5.0.4.1 and it gets the exact same score. I'm pretty sure the app has to be compiled with neon support.
I got 26.0 FPS, stock ROM.

I'm not sure if the app needs to be compiled specially in order to explicitely use the hardware FP instructions, or if the OS uses it automatically when enabled
NeoCore: 26.5 fps with sound, CM 5.0.4.1 with matching .33 UV kernel.
Well in the review linked in the original post it sounds like you need a compiler that uses the neon instructions as well as os support in order to take advantage of them. Isn't that how floating point extensions usually work i.e. mmx sse etc?
NeoCore gives me 27.1 FPS at 800x480 with my CPU at 1113Mhz. (UV/OC .32 kernel from 3/10, with NEON)

GLBenchmark Results!

I've tried to overclock, lagfix, change roms and kernels, but I didn't see any big difference.
I would like to stay with real FPS benchmarks like GLBenchmark or others not like quadrant.
I've seen many people using ext2 instead of ext4, other say rfs is better, so I'm getting very confused. And also many people around here.
Each one of us has got a personalized SGS. Let's run each one of us GLBenchmark OpenGl 2.0 test without FSAA (The one of egypt) and see the results of each one of us.
Dlownload glbenchmark here: http://www.glbenchmark.com/download.jsp
Please specify model, rom, kernel, launcher, running apps, free mem before doing the test... Like every bit of info you can give, so we could find the best settings!
Thanks to all ! I'll run the test and post in few minutes!

Bench marks do not say how responsive or laggy the phone is and unless you are obsessive with numbers are a waste of time .

yes, but games performance is equal to FPS, so more FPS=More optimized system.
Just because that reason i proposed to use glbenchmark, as it is an only graphical test.

Gingerbread slower on 3d gaming

is there a way how to speed up the gingerbread on 3d gaming like on froyo?
in froyo my NFS Shift is like 55 - 60 fps but in gingerbread its just around 30 - 40 fps..
same on Quadrant in 3d rendering the red and blue dna like rolling figure is 49 - 50 fps in FROYO but in gingerbread it wont pass 30 fps
any tweaks on how to boost 3d rendering speed?
First of all, wrong section
Froyo indeed had better hardware acceleration than gb, and the kernel was also a lot better, Samsung rushed gb and messed things, but does it really affect you, the human eye can see @ ~30fps max, so does it matter?
honestly im seeing the difference.. 30fps is like lagging/stuttering to my naked eye..
i dont know but maybe its because I'm used to a high FPS on my computer.. the lowest FPS i see on my PC game is 90 fps. that's why I can differenciate 30fps to 60fps

Some people can really tell the difference. Sadly, I'm one of them
But I started using the tab as more of a work device than gaming, so the newer features of Gingerbread far outweighed the gaming performance of Froyo for me.

LOL i'm also one of them, and this was one of the reasons HC needed froyo bootloader!
actually in terms of UI rendering and office apps specially on loading.. Gingerbread beats froyo over a mile ahead.. gingerbread is smoother only the 3d gaming is the problem.. but very well going to stick on gingerbread 2.3.6..
and btw.. Froyo also allows to underclock the CPU with higher value than gingerbread.. on froyo I can run 1.4ghz with -350mv stable but on gingerbread I cant get past -50mv stable on 1.4ghz..
any other tweak on how are the others getting a monstrous 3K score on quadrant?

GB is faster than froyo, it would more, but Samsung rushed out the update, and that ruined it partially.
UV is kernel issue, try with some other kernel first, and -350mv is insane!
3k in quadrant is nothing, its just a score, can be fooled, mostly its fooled in I/O part
-350mv running stable on 1.4ghz is true..
have you tried a FROYO with any kuxodaxi's kernel?
i suggest you try it and see for yourself
yeah Gingerbread is faster in froyo but not on samsung..
on tab froyo beats gingerbread in terms of 3d gaming
by the way what is the best I/O scheduler for you?

Honestly, no
I got my tab from my dad sometime back, and i had already updated to gb via *cough* kies *cough*, so didnt get a chance to try it out more.
i hope someone can port the UI speed of Gingerbread to the Froyo XD

Hello!
Then, I can breathe easy xD
Yes, I tried various combinations, both as DonutHD 2.3 UB and FeraLab v20 UB with Ferakernel 3.6. UB. Performance is excellent but a week of use, I began having reboots with FeraLab v20, did several wipes and factory resets but still the same. However are the best I've had (DonutHD and FLv20).
Now I'm testing the FeraLab v21 and now everything is very smooth and no reboots for now...
Thank you very much for your attention.

AnTuTu v3.2.2
AnTuTu 3.2.2 is now available from Google Play store.
It appears to be adding a 'considerably' higher 3D and slightly higher 2D graphics score now. CPU Integer scores drop slightly.
Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10i benchmarks running DoomKernel v6 and GB 2.3.3
I have the same build for over 6 months with only minor build.prop 'tweaks' and the odd bit of memory freed after culling system apps down to 95, so I'm not thinking this is anything much different about my build, but I am seeing approx 208 points extra in the score since AnTuTu v3.0.3 and most of that is coming from 2D and 3D graphics scores.
Just to be all white coat, beard and thick rim glasses, I did re-install AnTuTu v3.0.3 again and re-test. The results are still consistent with old scores where we see higher CPU integer score and lower 2D and 3D graphics scores with AnTuTu v3.0.3
My old AnTuTu v3.0.3 score was 3109 and my current re-tested AnTuTu v3.0.3 score is 3101 - 3124 so any increase in AnTuTu scores is a reflection of AnTuTu's new version 3.2.2 and not any changes in your build.
So with the AnTuTu v3.2.2 scores we should all be seeing approx 200 points improvement on our AnTuTu v3.0.3 scores before we even consider any improvements attributed to developer changes.
Mind you if I was a ROM developer I'd be happy my ROM increased by 200 points in an AnTuTu benchmark over 3 months, even when I'd done nothing, but smiled and waved.
All a bit of a giggle, but it's nice to see the XPERIA X10i going up in AnTuTu scores with the same ROM/Kernel build rather than going down.

As a separate update with regards to benchmarking, I see Futuremark has listed 02-APR-2013 for Android.
Futuremark 3DMark for Android
[Update] I see that 3DMark is not supported on the XPERIA X10i, I tried side loading and just get an error.

NEW TEST My big Kernel benchmark on i9001, 4.1.2, cynanogmod ivendor alpha 10

NEW TEST, benchmark+battery
Hi, its me again, i post new test, benchmark + battery. There is here no all kernels (i want test battery life time!) , but most popular. Tests are make on cyanogen ivendor 10, no clean system, with a lot of apps on background (like polish GG-messanger, skype, mail, pdoid patch for system etc).
Theoretical, on clean system, ivendor cyanogen 10, brood kernel OC, very clean system antutu benchmark shows 7092, but this is no normal use, i prefer benchmark and battery use on no-clean system, with all apps on background what i use normal (what i mentioned before).
[1]
Castagnal 10.2 kernel, smartAssV2, 1209mhz
Battery: 6/6
Antutu Benchmark: 5831
Problems for normal use: XBMC, HD vids dont play fluency, never reboot
[2]
Castagnal 10.2 kernel, smartAssV2, 1802mhz
Battery: 4/6
Antutu Benchmark: 6425
[3]
Nexus Kernel V8.0, OC, exUV, smartAssV2, 1824mhz
Battery: 2/6
Antutu Benchmark: 6264
[4]
Nexus Kernel V8.0, OC, exUV, smartAssV2, 1209mhz
Battery: 5/6
Antutu Benchmark: 5488
Problems for normal use: XBMC, HD vids dont play fluency; caller id for incoming calls shows in 1/2 s, not immedietly
[5]
Brood Kernel 1.4 - OC
Kernel BRICK MY PHONE, always on new cynogen
[6]
PhenomKernel by Erik v1.2.4 , smartAssV2, 1824mhz
Battery: 4/6
Antutu Benchmark: 6566
IMO, best fluency on XBMC (HD stream movies plays very fluency) and whole system, sometimes reboot
[7]
PhenomKernel by Erik v1.2.4 , smartAssV2, 1204mhz
Battery: 6/6
Antutu Benchmark: 5591
Problems for normal use: XBMC, HD vids dont play fluency;
MAIN RESULT: the best kernel for normal use is PhonomKernel, or Castagnal kernel. 1,2-1,4 Mhz on procesor, smartassV2. The better performance is for PhonemonKernel, but sometimes very rarely it reebot system. Normally i use phonemonKernel, cause i has significantly higher performance on normal use, and i could fast with widget overclock processor when i like see television by the XBMC.

OLD test:
Hi, i would like to present my big-) test of kernels,
I use:
android 4.1.2, cynanogmod ivendor alpha 6 and a lot of diffrend kernels and make test twice, and take average value. Normal, no-clean system, with some apps on background, i i use normally
Kernel vendor frequency Antutu benchmark result increase
cynogen stock 1401 5780 0,0%
broodKernel v1.4 smartassV2 1401 5733 -0,8%
broodKernel v1.4 performance 1804 6710 16,1%
CastagnalT v10 Luizactive 1401 6325 9,4%
CastagnalT v10 performance 1804 6898 19,3% BEST RESULT
DiabloKernel HP+ 3.0 BrazilianWax 1401 5351 -7,4%
DiabloKernel HP+ 3.0 performance 1824 6747 16,7%
Re: My big Kernel benchmark on i9001, 4.1.2, cynanogmod ivendor alpha 6
Nice test!
I would be interested in the battery drains as well. A fast phone is nice but if it couldn't last a day on battery it's not an option.
Verstuurd van mijn GT-I9001
I have battery some for some kernels..
brood kernel, 1800, smartass 2, battery work time is the same as stock cyanogen kernel, works good. brood kernel make sometimes phone reboot.
castagnal.kernel is very battery drain. and camera don't work good on my phone on it. vendor luizactive
Diablo kernel I don't test more than some hours... and can't say something serious about battery work time.

Nice test out there!
However can you update your thread with new kernels like Diablo's kernel or Nexus?

i will make new test, battery time work, * benchmark, all kernels from xda, new ivendor rom, non+clean system with apps i use (pdroid, gg-messangfer etc)
if u want
+1 for the battery tests; for me if a kernel runs like the wind but drains my battery in hours, there is no much point.
New test, plz comment, not all kernels, because i want test battery performance very good
upgraded test
Hi
Currently I'm using Erikmod 3.0 kernel with 1824 MHz OC. I suggest this kernel for the benchmark.
Thank you*Thank you*Thank you....
KEEP THIS AWESOME WORK MAAAN!
THIS. IS. [email protected]#$ ING GREAT!!!!!

Thanks for this awesome Tests you've made.
I'm using EhndroixII with NexusV8 Kernel. Batterylife is great.
Thank you very much for fantastic benchmarks. I haven't actually tried PhenomKerne, but seems to be the best hands down. I wonder if it would work on my Japanese SC-02B...
